Knows his crafti..........2004-04-06
Excellent. An invaluable tool for anyone rethinking the layout of their apartment or 'small space'. Crafti is one of the great Australian interior design thinkers and commentators.

Drawing upon the sparse tranquility of Japanese design, architect and Tokyo resident Azby Brown explains how to live comfortably in limited or overcrowded domains. By rethinking our approach to space, utilizing seemingly dead areas (under-floor or under-stairs storage, for example), creating multipurpose or convertible areas, and reconsidering layout, we can make the most of what we have. Some of these homes carry Eastern minimalism to an extreme that clutter-prone Westerners may not be comfortable with, but there are plenty of ingenious furniture, storage, and planning solutions nevertheless. --Amy Handy
Book Description
Small Spaces is about living comfortably and using space wisely, and where better to find ideas on that subject than Japan, one of the world's most urban and densely populated countries? Tokyo resident Azby Brown, a distinguished architect and designer, has assembled dozens of creative solutions to space and storage problems, illustrating them with photographs and plans of actual living environments in contemporary homes. The key to his approach is what might be called "The Three Cs"-compact, comfortable, and convenient. Use of space is reconsidered, with easy living always the uppermost goal. A living room is opened up by creating level changes or "joining it with the exterior." A staircase can double as a chest of drawers, a space beneath the floor can serve as a kitchen pantry or hiding place for a disappearing bed: an adjustable table can serve different purposes at different heights. From top to bottom, in bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and hall, Azby Brown presents solutions to the problems of inner space, illustrated with dozens of full-color photographs, drawings, and architectural plans. Small Spaces will be a lifesaver for all those with growing families, shrinking resources, and limited room to grow-or indeed anyone who wants to transform a disorganized, cluttered environment into an orderly, attractive living area.

small spaces with hugh ideas.......2007-01-28
This book is so ingenious that it inspired me to change careers, and make a few changes around the house myself.
title should be changed to "Build built-in furniture".......2006-04-10
The title should be "build built-in furniture to get rid of your space problems."
I think the ideas are worth considering: sure, if you have chairs for desks and vanities that slide right in, you can save a lot of space. Yes, build little drawers out of the stair case, and nifty pull out cabinets everywhere. Certainly having less furniture and more built -ins is the best way to reduce clutter. Yes, build underground "closets" in your floorboards and crawl space.
However, for most young people and for renters, the solutions are not practical because of lack of investment capital or long term plan for a space. Hiring carpenters to construct these designs would be of prohibitive cost for most, except for the wealthy.
I see from this book that Schindler and Neutra and all the modernists got lots of their ideas from the Japanese built-in solution.
Ranked #6 out of 7 "small decor" books.......2005-02-14
I ranked this next to the bottom of 7 "decorating small spaces" books I bought. This author is a contradiction in terms: a minimalist who loves complexity! If you like Asian, bare-bones, neutral-hued decor & have construction skills, you may like the extensively detailed drawings of intricate building projects (i.e, a nine-part modular table-seating-storage unit with more uses than anyone would possibly give it) & the helpful photos. But you'll still be irked that sq. footage is never given. If you're like me (American condo owner), you'll find this book, written for and featuring Japanese homeowners, not adaptable to your needs in any way.
An indoctrination in organization.......2003-01-11
As someone whose prospective first house is likely to be small--and even smaller inside--I've been looking around for useful ideas that will help me choose a home into which my Stuff will fit. (That's not just stuff; that's George Carlin-type STUFF, and it requires serious storage.) We're not just talking a smaller McMansion, but homes where the master bedroom is, on average, 10'x9' with badly placed doorways.
Azby Brown's book was an education in understanding the options even a small or oddly shaped space can afford. Though most of the actual implementations discussed would certainly work better in a Japanese home than in a '50s era raised ranch, the *ideas* are the thing. And these ideas are outstanding. Every inch of space is used to beautiful effect. Every opportunity is considered.
Especially choose this book if you're planning to remodel, as expert contractors and cabinetmakers will benefit from these pages; nevertheless, _Small Spaces_ is for anyone who still thinks that light neutrals and pint-sized furnishings are the only way to manage.
Deserves space on your underfloor shelf.......2002-12-27
Azby Brown lives in Japan, and has written a number of books about Japanese design, or carpentry, from the perspective of a close observer.
This book deals with design and product approaches to living in small spaces without clutter. The premise is that the smaller a space is, the more it needs to appear empty if living in it is to be fully comfortable and satisfying. This isn't a book on how to load more gear into more "storage solutions", though some unusual solutions like underfloor storage are elaborated.
Granted a lot of this stuff is not going to be transferable to American houses, and some of the details, like miraculously small appliances are not even well illustrated (most ilustration are very good). But then there is a huge market for books covering professionally created 25 000 square foot spaces in Carmel by the Sea, or whatever, and I am not likely to fully implement ideas from those books either. Frankly adapting the spirit of this book is much more likely

Book Description
When Stars and Stripes Met Hammer and Sickle tells the story of face-to-face citizen diplomacy that brought together Americans and Soviets during the closing years of the cold war. Looking specifically at five conferences held between 1985 and 1989, Ross Mackenzie recounts the experiences of artists, diplomats, government officials, and interested citizens who joined together for a unique mix of political debates, artistic performances, open discussions, and socializing. Sponsored by the Chautauqua Institution, a center for arts, education, religion, and recreation in western New York, these conferences offer a snapshot of the relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union just before the collapse of the Soviet government in November 1989. The meetings also point to the promising future of people-to-people diplomacy. Mackenzie chronicles the history of the Chautauqua Institution since its founding in 1874 and its influence on American foreign policy! . He explains the traditional Chautauqua formula that provides citizens an opportunity to meet without great restraints on topics of discussion or interaction. Mackenzie suggests that these conferences, coming at the time of Mikhail Gorbachev's glasnost and perestroika, may have been both a measure of the reforms' success and a driving force in continuing their momentum.
Highlighting the imaginative, wide-ranging approach employed by Chautauqua, Mackenzie recounts the scope of topics discussed at the conferences, from nuclear weapons, women's issues, and global health care to American intervention in Latin America and Soviet intervention in Afghanistan. He also identifies the cross section of people drawn to participate, from average citizens to individuals of international renown, including U.S. policymakers Paul Wolfowitz and Paul Nitze, violinist Eugene Fodor, poets Andrei Voznesensky and Yevgeny Yevtushenko, cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova, musicians Grover Washington Jr. and Tommy Cecil, and politicians Mario Cuomo and Geraldine Ferraro.

This is the picture-taker s bible on lighting, posing and taking gorgeous photographs that will increase sales and profits. The guide is organized as a thorough and detailed shooting script for a typical wedding day. 144 pages, 8 1/4 x 11
Customer Reviews:
The perfect level of detail for a beginner.......2007-06-12
This book covers all the main topics of wedding photography for the beginner. Not too much detail on camera settings; the focus is more on things you want to be aware when photographing the different parts of the wedding from before the wedding until after the reception. Pictures are great as examples and text is easy to read and understand.
Only for film photographers.......2007-05-19
I got this book hoping for info geared for digital photography, it has none. The book was written when digital photography was just becoming popular. It is good for formal wedding posing ideas, but it gives no technical info for digital photography. All of the info is based on using film.
Overrated.......2007-04-29
I am a beginning photographer but after having reviewed Digital Wedding Photography by Ken Johnson, this book I would say is a distant 3rd. Overall the book is well very simple, well written but low on explaning tecniques. This book dealt with more emphasis on wedding workflow from the dressing room to church and beyond. As a photographer I think we all know that already....I would have been happy if emphasis was put on techniques and tips on how to capture the moment. If this was my first book I may have been impressed with it but sorry folks Ken's book is far more superior in quality overall.
Not rocket science.......2006-07-31
I was hoping for a book that offered some real value - an easy to read, quick to digest volume that provided some real insight. But this is basic content that may be of value to those who have never taken a picture before, most likely using the "professional techniques" verbiage in the title to attract more buyers. It certainly got me!
Great Reference.......2006-06-30
After several years of photography and being frustrated with the results I was getting I finally decided that maybe I did need to read the manuals that came with the camera. After countless hours of trying to decipher what exactly they were trying to explain to me, it became clear that I needed something a little more "user friendly" that would still provide the necessary information to help me get the results I was looking for. After looking over several books I settled on Professional Techniques for the Wedding Photographer by George Schaub. I am not a wedding photographer by trade, in fact I have to be dragged kicking and screaming to a wedding (including my own). I found this book to be quite interesting as Mr. Schaub went through several lighting techniques that can be used not just for weddings but for all portraits. The book was written in a concise manner giving you the necessary theory behind lighting followed up with a real world example with diagrams of where to set the lights. After reading this book I still hate going to weddings and would rather go to the dentist than sit through a session with the new couple showing their wedding photos. But at least I understand how the photographer got the results they did and how I can recreate them to make me a better photographer.

Judging a Book by its Cover.......2004-11-02
Every serious photographer spends time trying to figure out how to make better photographs. But professional photographers also have to spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to market photos, because without sales there is no profession. One of the tools professional photographers use is a "book". A book is a portfolio of the photographer's pictures used to get clients to hire him or her.
Now it might seem that a photographer's pictures could stand by themselves and not need any special method of presentation. The author, who is a consultant to photographers in the preparation of their books, disagrees. She believes that everything from the drafting of a positioning statement about the photographer's work (which will guide the selection and display of pictures in the book) to the texture of the slip case for a book is critical for the photographer to get the edge over competing photographers. After you finish this book you may agree with her.
The author gives simple straightforward advice. Indeed it is so simple that most of the text in this volume could probably be contained in a short brochure. What fills most of the book is the pictures taken by the author's clients, which illustrate the points she makes along the way. If you pay attention to Oppenheim you probably do stand a better chance of catching an art buyer's or art director's eye. On the other hand, unless you already feel comfortable with the economics of marketing, you may gulp when she tells you to spend $125 for what is essentially a loose-leaf binder.
Most of the message contained in this volume, and the photographs included, seem to be directed at assignment photographers, that is, those who must sell a buyer on purchasing his or her skills, rather than selling existing photographs. Yet other photographers from stock to fine arts also probably need a book. While those photographers seem largely ignored by the author, they can benefit from the advice contained here.
I must confess that I'm a little resistant to an assumption underlying the approach of this book, i.e., that photography buyers and directors are willing to form an opinion, at least initially, from form rather than substance. But then again, photographers deal in form, not substance (I don't mean that negatively), so I suppose a nice looking book is important. I wish there was a little more meat in this book, but I suppose even a few words that can show the error of marketing common sense, and the importance of following a path that works, are worth the time and cost of this volume.
Single vision, not single minded.......2004-01-12
As a professional photographer in the throes of a major repositioning effort, Selina's book provides valuable insight into how to carve out a single vision in 15 to 18 images, wrapped, packaged or otherwise presented in a way that supports that vision. The book doesn't pull any punches. It isn't for the on-the-fence photographer. If you want to win, you have to play to win. There is an investment in time, in money and in patience...none of which are particularly pleasant when faced with the uncertainty of a complex and ever-competitive market. My only disagreement with her - and the reason I rated the book 4 out of 5 stars - is because I feel that the biggest obstacle to getting an assignment is not knowing the right people. Salina thinks it's all about the work. I have found that my biggest assignments came from contacts in the industry. All of us who work on a national level are technically proficient, and most of us are bright, talented and driven. Yes, our styles cover the broadest spectrum imaginable, but what really seperates us is our contacts. With the onset of digital, photography as we once knew it is history. And that's the dirty little secret of this business...If it isn't perfect, we'll fix it in photoshop. My suggestion to anyone entering this field is to network like your life depended on it. Believe me, it's where the line in the sand is drawn.
Required reading.......2003-09-27
Regardless of whether you are a professional, student and/or considering a career in photography, this is one of the few books that you can learn from today and in the future. With more than 25 years as a consultant to professionals, Selina has the experience and vision to show photographers how a sellable portfolio can be created: from selecting a visual point of view image selection, editing images, sequencing & all the way to portfolio case selection. The marriage of: concepts, text and photos are presented logically and in a way that makes the information easy to understand and apply. If you really want to succede in today`s market, then this is the book you need to begin your journey.
This book is like a glass of water in the desert.......2003-08-07
Most commercial photographers know about Selina Oppenheim, but only a lucky few make the investment to hire her for her expertise in portfolio development and refining your vision as a photographer. Even though hiring Selina as a consultant was one of the best decisions I have made as a photographer, I still wanted to read her book to make sure I hadn't missed anything she has to say about marketing myself as a photographer. I can say from personal experience that this book distills the essence of her one-on-one consulting. This book is really, really worth learning from.
A clear, succinct vision based portfolio guidebook........2003-07-21
Selina Oppenheim is one of the premier creative consultants in the photography industry. Although no single book could possibly encompass her 25+ years of portfolio building and marketing experience, Portfolios That Sell gives you the opportunity to dive into her portfolio building process that she's used to develop so many exceptional photographers portfolios. It clearly and succinctly lays out the step-by-step process that you can follow to develop your own vision based portfolio. The photos that Selina chose to use as examples work well and will both guide you and encourage you to create new portfolio visuals.

My Opinion.......2007-04-04
I was very disappointed in this book. It was not current enough and much of the information was older and not as relevant as I had hoped.
Only useful for People Photography.........2003-10-11
If the stock photography you do does NOT have people in it (Such as product or travel photography), this book is of no value at all to you. This book ONLY deals with topics such as how to arrange a shot with models, or what are the uses for the types of photos with people in them.
This book is being tossed in the trash, as it doesn't even have enough value to even take up my bookshelf space!

Customer Reviews:
Very superficial.......2006-05-26
I have a good grounding in photography and was hoping for more detailed instruction on product photography. I learned practically nothing. There is a lot of very elementary filler material on general photography, digital cameras and editing software and Internet. The photos are not that great either. May be somewhat useful for someone who has no knowledge at all of these topics
Professionals only. .......2006-02-19
This is not what i expected. I needed a beginners guide. The book tells little about cameras. It's mostly how to do professional shoots...meaning expensive specialized equipment.
One Source For All The Answers.......2005-10-13
As a regular e-bayer, I'm always looking for a competitive marketing edge. This book clearly points a way to gain that edge by differentiating my offerings from a large majority of my competitors. I've often thought that most photographs used in e-bay marketing are mediocre, at best, my own included. When I see a good e-bay photographic presentation, I recognize the selling power that it represents, but I have rarely accomplished it myself. Sinclair and Livingston have produced a terrific book. If you read it and apply the material, almost anyone (including me) can produce "above average" photographs for their e-bay marketing. The book is a quick-read, but provides an excellent reference souce for later application of the material it contains. I've read a couple other e-bay books by Joe Sinclair and one thing I like about all these books is that they have a nice clean easy-to-read layout. Each chapter in this book has substantial stand-alone value. A chapter that may be a trinket to you might be a treasure to me, and vice versa. In total, however, the book will have great value to any serious e-bay marketer. If "a picture is worth a thousand words", then several very good pictures make a powerful e-bay sales presentaion, indeed. My conclusion ... a great book, complete, perfect for practical application.
Customer Reviews:
Creative Ideas.......2006-10-08
People Shots That Sell is an inspirational overview of stock photography. The book's authors have been editors and agents in the industry and their perspective is clearly from that standpoint which can be a good thing for photographers. However, that also accounts for why the book glosses over many details and how-to information that photographers getting started in the stock business will want to know. There are no technical details on how the images in the book were produced, and none of the images have accompanying sales figures on how profitable they have been. Neither are any of them credited, not even in the back of the book, and that's an oversight that any photographer would cringe at. I suspect that nearly all of them were licensed from royalty-free libraries. I still recommend Photos That Sell by Lee Frost as the best book that I've found on this topic. People Shots That Sell is a beautiful book with wonderful photographs that can be very inspirational and idea generative for staging lifestyle people shoots to generate stock images. Most experienced stock shooters will not learn anything new from this book, but it can be a great resource for those wanting to start licensing their work as stock.

Book Description
In this small, wickedly funny book, luscious lesbians, gorgeous gays, and queers of quality spring to life from every page. Cartoon-style illustrations by Richard Hughes spotlight a spectrum of characters to be found in the gay community, such as the Mardi Gras board member, the Muscle Mary, the fag hag, the A grade queen, the door bitch, and the porn star. All Sorts is a lively tongue-in-cheek look at the stereotypes of queer life and culture.
