These materials, which have been developed and thoroughly class tested over a period of several years by the authors, are intended for use in courses in differential equations taught at the sophomore/junior level in American colleges and universities. Prerequisites for using these materials is the calculus of one variable, although calculus of several variables, and linear algrbra, are recommended. The text covers the standard topics in first and second order equations, power series solutions, first order systems, Laplace transforms, numerical methods and stability of non-linear systems. For historical completeness, the authors have also included the solution methods of Bernoulli, Clariaut, and Lagrange, if instructors wish to cover them. Liberal use is made of programs in Mathemtica, both for symbolic computations and graphical displays. The programs are described in separate sections, as well as in the accompanying Mathematica notebooks. The book has been designed so that it can be read with or without Mathematica and no pre-requisite knowledge of Mathematica is required to use the book, not to deal with the Mathematica programs contained in ODE.m, the special Mathematica software package residing on the CD-ROM accompanying the text. ODE.m enables students to solve differential equations, much as a calculator would. The CD-ROM, in addition to containing ODE.m, also contains the Mathematica solution of worked examples, the Mathematica solution of exercises, a protrait gallery of some 48 mathematicians who have contributed to the field of differential equations, a selction of various Mathematica noteboosk, Mathematica movies and sample labs for students. This ONE is for REAL.......1998-07-20

No matter what you think about differential equations, you just got to have that book. The software that comes with it, is dynamite, and fully adds to Mathematica's Dsolve. Fact is, after you read the book you may understand what Ordinary Differential Equations are all about. "By the way there is nothing ordinary about Differential equations". These guys really know their stuff. Even better they can really explain it well. The book reads like someone is constantly talking to you or guiding you. The presentation is great. My only problem is that I finally understood the stuff. [ A pleasant one at that] The other fascinating thing about the book is the historical backgound of the mathematicians who contibuted to the discovery of DEs. This makes the book so enjoyable. Read this book and your girlfriend/boygriend will think you are a true inspired genius. However make it fast. They are bound to find out for themselves. This book will be true classic. BTW, you c! ould also look up another great book on DE. Authors are Blanchard, Devaney and Hall. Published by Brooks/Cole. These two books are all you should ever need.

Great Text and Fantastic Mathematica Aproach with ODE.m.......1998-02-22

Really good, if not best. It is the resource text as an example for textbooks for the years to come. You learn to work out analytically first and then computing and numerically. The Mathematica notebook format of the acompaning CD-Rom is not only containing all the 900 pages of the book and it's graphycs but also animations and the solutions to exercises and Mathematica exercises. I would have liked that my first ODE textbook would have been like that one. Fantastic!

Lots of good information if you are studying postgraduate maths, but not very good if you need to solve real world problems.

An autobiography of a naval aviator who flew over 100 combat missions in the Korean War. Tex Atkinson flew F4U Corsairs and AD Skyraiders. He served on the USS Princeton and USS Boxer.

An important contribution to the history of naval aviation with detailed and often chilling accounts of combat flying during the Korean War and of straight-deck carrier operations during that time. Includes excellent descriptions of the flying characteristics (and hazards) of the Corsair and Skyraider.

Also a very human story with accounts of the author's growing up years in Hillsboro, Texas and his attendance at Southwestern University. There is an interesting account of a Willie Nelson concert to benefit the restoration of the Hill County courthouse which burned to the ground and was completely rebuilt to look like the original.

Book includes two photo sections (32 pages total) of excellent personal and naval aviation photography.

This is a much expanded and much higher quality edition than the paperback edition published by Publish America. DO NOT CONFUSE THE TWO. There is little comparison.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who really wants to know what it was like for someone in the Korean War. It is easy to read and you feel like you are right there with him. Excellent!

a nostalgic looking back.......2006-07-05

The book is a collection of essays that give us a frankly nostalgic look at American society during the Cold War. Now that the war is over, and the US won a largely bloodless victory, the passage of time has removed much (all?) of the tension and fears. All that is left is a safe nostalgia, burnished by the analysis offered in these essays.

So we see the changing sexual mores, epitomised by Hugh Hefner and his Playboy magazine, and extrapolated by its imitators like Penthouse. While the changing tastes in architecture and furniture are created and driven by Fuller, Eames and others. Much else is covered in the book. Mostly of the experiences of the middle and upper classes of American society. With relatively little coverage of the poverty and racial discrimination of the times.

Why, Klaus, why?.......2005-08-27

The value of this book is the same as any memoir. Mr. Haberlen tells his story and in so doing gives us a valuable glimpse into the mindset of a German military man during World War II. Unfortunately, Klaus is the Teutonic version of an Unreconstructed Southerner, at one point opining that Hitler was really no worse than FDR. Yes, it is an interesting book, but you must beware that several disturbing conclusions such as the one just mentioned are scattered about the book. What is truly good about the book is too often obscured by the sick feeling the worst of it gives you.

I learned about this book by word of mouth - My friend is friends with Chad. I picked up the book and just could not put it down. In the short 200-some pages, a lot happens. This book changed the outlook I have on life and how grateful I am that I was born healthy and how grateful I am that he lived through everything.
