Book Description
Language Acquisition offers, in one convenient reader, work by the most outstanding researchers in each field and is intended as a snapshot of the sort of theory and research taking place in language acquisition in the 1990s. All of the articles and chapters were chosen to reflect topics and debates of current interest, and all take an interdisciplinary approach to language development, relating the study of how a child comes to possess a language to issues within linguistics, computational theory, biology, social cognition, and comparative psychology.
While there are several introductory texts on language development, and countless collections of articles, thisscientists are asking about language acquisition, the important experimental findings, and the key theoretical debates, suitable for students at advanced levels and scholars with a range of different perspectives and interests.
The readings are organized into six sections:
- the onset of language development,
- word learning,
- syntax and semantics,
- morphology,
- acquisition in special circumstances, and
- alternative perspectives.
Each section serves as an introduction to a specific area and provides sufficient background for further reading.

Each noteworthy title is presented with a brief yet accurate plot summary, title, author, price and ISBN number. An accompanying CD-ROM allows for quick browsing and reference of the information concerning these vital and quality recommended titles on one's computer. A Core Collection For Young Adults is very strongly recommended for school and community librarians charged with the responsibility of building and maintaining Young Adult materials in both fiction and non-fiction categories.

Excellent resource.......2007-02-07
This book is long overdue and is an outstanding resource for a topic which is not discussed by physicans after cancer treatment. As a breast cancer educator and a breast cancer survivor I can tell you the changes that occur after surgery and treatment can be as devastating as the disease itself. This book is a frank discussion about those changes and there are excellent suggestions from cancer survivors. Every woman who has had surgery and treatment for breast cancer would benefit from this book and physicians would find this an superior resource for their patients.

Over the last two years, Lili Almog has made extensive visits to nuns in three different Carmelite monasteries—one in Mount Carmel in Haifa, Israel, where the order was founded and assumed its name in the year 1200; the first Carmelite monastery in the United States, in Port Tobacco, MD; and one located at the birthplace of Jesus, Bethlehem, Palestine. This book is a total surprise. As "simple" and modest as is the life of nuns, so are Lili Almog's photographs - both embodying attributes of the eminent and the infinite. This is an exquisite photographic exploration of the less common feminine, which shows that deep inside every-woman, nests a secret desire to abandon the self into greatness. Silent yet clearly thought provoking, Almog's photographs invited me to search inside for all the possible or impossible "what ifs", and for the different shapes greatness may take. Looking forward to see more of her work. :-)
Perfect simplicity.......2007-01-13
This is a lovely book of photography. Lili Almog takes us inside the sometimes mysterious world of contemplative nuns with photos of the sisters and their convents. Reflecting the quiet of her subjects, Almog provides little prose or explanation; the pictures alone allow us a glimpse of the simplicity that leaves space for God to enter in. The book is neither stark nor romantic in its view of contemplative life, and the photos are works of art.

I've always had a fondness for photgraphy books about monks and nuns and sisters which continues even after 16 of religious life. However, this book was a big disappointment and the general reaction of the sisters in my community was the same. The photos do not in the least convey the "soul" of cloistered, contemplative life. The poses are stark and stiff and remind me of passport photos! Except for a few, almost none of the photos convey the dynamic relationship of the nuns among themselves or with God.
I know that was not Lili Almog intentions because she writes enthusiastically about her experience with these Carmelite Nuns however the results are a disappointment.

I picked this book up at the book store just to thumb through it. I shortly sat down and slowly went through these stunning photographs. Almog has captured a sense of serenity and simplicity in these photographs. They are also thoughtprovoking, revealing many aspects of convent life. The quotes scattered throughout are also lovely and interesting.
I did not buy it, but have put it on my wishlist. This book is an inspiration to consider life and God, and I sense that the pictures would become familiar but never lose their power.

I bought this book because it was packaged with a book by M. Scott Peck,
"The road less travelled". This book SHOULD NOT be package with any of M.Scott Peck's work, since it leads one to believe that the above book was co-authored by him. "The love you deserve..." is a light weight bit of fluff that is not anywhere near the caliber of the work of M.Scott Peck,and the advice in this book is simply not practical.
Warning! This is Not the M. Scott Peck of the The Road Less.......2005-05-09
I haven't read this book, but I have read the reviews. This is not the M. Scott Peck of the The Road Less Travelled. I just finished reading M. Scott Peck's "Glimpses of the Devil" in which he made reference to his first wife, Lily, as if they were still married so I am assuming that he is still married. If you enjoyed the Road Less Travelled and found it to be a challenging and helpful book, this is NOT the same author and you will very likely be disappointed.

Scott and Shannon Peck believe that genuine love between couples is a spiritual right. The goal of this book is to raise consciousness about how to make decisions that lead to a richer and more satisfying special love experience. 10 key ideas about love are discussed.
Throughout the book Scott and Shannon Peck tell all. They are the joint voice of experience, and most chapters include their personal insights and stories. They both had first marriages that ended in divorce, they both went through an internal process of "being love," trusting in love, and envisioning a more loving mate. Then, as if on cue, the Pecks found each other. They claim to be "the happiest couple in the universe." Their authenticity and personal commitment to the path of love is deeply moving.
That said, The Love You Deserve sometimes misleads by attempting to make the earthly experience of special love divine. Statements such as "the fusing of your Light with another's Light is what creates eternal love" and the notion that "perpetual intimacy" is something valued or willed by God is not accurate or helpful.

This book opened my eyes to the fact that you can have a real ,lasting, serious relationship with someone on the other side.If your lover dies ,it doesn't have to be the end.You can carry on your love.Or you can begin a new relationship with someone.I think that these sort of love affairs,although they are unknown to people in general,are very strong because it takes so much commitment on the part of both the living and dead person to keep it going.It is beautiful. This book will reveal the secret of spirit love.For all the skeptics:just because you haven't experienced it doesn't mean it isn't real.

Clark and Skouras use many terms to describe a loved one, from essence contact, to soulmates, to deep ease, to divine love. Then they add several deeper possibilities: hyper or liquid love, magical self, perfect love and fusion. A relationship can be measured on the "loveometer" to show the percentage of merger. It is this percentage that determines the nature of the relationship.
The authors list several techniques to help you attract your perfect love. These include channeling, therapies, affirmations, support groups and transformational dreaming. To attract souls (usually from past lives), you need a sense of "havingness," high self-esteem and intent.
Their technique (usually practiced in a group but possible to do alone) is to have you list all the qualities you want in a relationship and to communicate this to a support person. In doing so, you clarify exactly what type of soul you wish to attract, or perhaps find you really do not want a relationship at this time. When you feel this relationship on both a conscious and subconscious level, you will begin to attune to the energy of the person you are to meet. By repeatedly tuning into this energy, you will bring this person into your life in from 3 to 12 months.
