    Book Description

Much data has been collected from experiments on the kinetios of radical reactions in different solids, but to date, this has not been presented in book format in a thorough and comprehensive way. This book makes the experimental data accessible for all chemists involved in these reactions. Various models of the tunnel atom transfer are analyzed in order to explain the kinetic isotope effect in solid phase reactions and photoinitiated radical reactions are inspected for the kinetic non-equivalence of particles and factors affecting their reactivity. Topics covered include:
    * kinetic description of reactions with dispersion particles in reactivity
    * the influence of space-orientation factors on reactivity in cage reactions
    * the influence of molecular dynamics on the kinetics of elementary reactions
    * the effect of structural-physical modification on kinetics of cage radical reactions

          Book Description

This volume explains how knot theory and Feynman diagrams can be used to illuminate problems in quantum field theory. The author emphasizes how new discoveries in mathematics have inspired conventional calculational methods for perturbative quantum field theory to become more elegant and potentially more powerful methods. The material illustrates what may possibly be the most productive interface between mathematics and physics. As a result, it will be of interest to graduate students and researchers in theoretical and particle physics as well as mathematics.

          Book Description

The true story of the daily life, the fears and the courage of the young men aboard the Destroyer Escort USS Rall (DE-304). Destroyer escorts were WW II's most expendable ships.

The book is filled with the real events of ship life: the difficulties of convoy duty, the constant search for Japanese submarines, and the yearning for mail from home, a few hours of sleep and a cold beer!

At the battle of Okinawa, destroyer escorts were sitting ducks for kamikaze attacks. In 20 seconds of heart-stopping action, the Rall destroyed four suicide planes and took a 500 pound bomb through the side, resulting in 21 killed and 38 wounded.

Highly autobiographical, this book follows Dick Graves from his early involvement in the war to the day of the Rall's decommissioning. It includes a perspective from the crew's 50-year reunion.

          5 out of 5 stars An inspiring real-life, real-world memoir.......2001-05-12

I'm the webmaster for the WWII destroyer escort USS Wintle ... I've purchased every DE book I can get my hands on to help me make my web page better. Unfortunately, there aren’t really that many good books on DE's. The few that are out there fall into two or three basic categories, those that are technical and meant mostly for WWII enthusiasts that are excited about the equipment (like model builders), and those that are “action” oriented. Since my web site was really geared to celebrate the regular people who were the crew members of a ship that “merely” did its duty escorting convoys and hunting subs, neither of these type of books typically has the depth of experience necessary to tell that type of story. After a lot of digging I did find a few “memoirs” from sailors, but inevitable they had flaws. They were not professionally published, so they were weak on proofing and editing. They tended to be spiral-bound. And if they had pictures or illustrations they were amateurish. Finally, they were often written by sailors that didn’t have access to the bridge. The authors seldom really understood the “big picture” or had researched the specifics of what their ships part was in the grand scheme of things.

When I found this book, Men of Poseidon, I was pretty impressed. The binding is professional, as are the pictures and the layout. There are no weird grammatical errors or spelling problems. The research is impeccable. Throughout, the author refers to specific log entries that he himself had made in the official ships log, which he requested from the US Navy in order to write this book. That brings up an important point. Since the author was an officer on the USS Rall, he was able to get the big picture and understand the real behind the scenes missions. He not only explains what happens on a day to day basis, but addresses why it happened. I learned a great deal from this book that no film or military history book will ever convey. In fact I learned so much that I couldn’t resist emailing the publisher to try to contact Mr. Graves himself, to see if he could help resolve some questions I had run into researching “my” DE, the USS Wintle. Imagine my surprise when he wrote me back and gave me wonderfully detailed information to help me in my work. A DE officer with an amazing memory is a tremendous resource. And he turned out to be a really nice guy.

The most important thing about the book is that the author, Richard Graves, is a very good writer. I was never confused, since the book takes the time to explain everything, yet I was never bored, since he kept things moving. That’s a very hard balance to achieve. The book does not skimp on scope either. It starts in the time leading up to the war, so you can appreciate the anti-war sentiment that was real, and the ambivalence that many people had about it, and continues on to the ships 50-year reunion.

When I categorized DE books, I didn’t put Men of Poseidon in the “action” category, because it doesn’t read that way. It’s not written to culminate in an exciting battle. However, it’s definitely more than a memoir. The USS Rall saw real action. The punishment it took at the hands of a concentrated 8-aircraft Japanese Kamikaze attack was substantial and deadly. I’m sure Mr. Graves could have chosen to write an action book about the episode. But instead he wrote a very personal memoir. It’s not about drama, it’s not about action or inflated speeches. It’s not about firepower, speed and camouflage schemes of a particular ship class. This book really is the story of the sailors of the USS Rall -- regular men in extraordinary circumstances, forced into heroism to serve their country and oppose imperialism. It’s a good book, a fun read, and an inspiring real-life, real-world memoir. It’s one of those book that, after you finish reading it, makes you feel like you just had the most amazing dinner conversation with a great story-teller. In other words, I highly recommend it.

          Book Description

A powerful and substantiated expose of the medical politics that prevents promising alternative cancer therapies from being implemented in the United States.

          • Focuses on Harry Hoxsey, the subject of the author's award-winning documentary, who claimed to cure cancer using herbal remedies.

          • Presents scientific evidence supporting Hoxsey's cancer-fighting claims.

          • Published to coincide with the anticipated 2000 public release of the government-sponsored report finding "noteworthy cases of survival" among Hoxsey
          patients.

Harry Hoxsey claimed to cure cancer using herbal remedies, and thousands of patients swore that he healed them. His Texas clinic became the world's largest privately owned cancer center with branches in seventeen states, and the value of its therapeutic treatments was upheld by two federal courts.  Even his arch-nemesis, the AMA, admitted his treatment was effective against some forms of cancer.  But the medical establishment refused an investigation, branding Hoxsey the worst cancer quack of the century and forcing his clinic to Tijuana, Mexico, where it continues to claim very high success rates.  Modern laboratory tests have confirmed the anticancer properties of Hoxsey's herbs, and a federal govenment-sponsored report is now calling for a major reconsideration of the Hoxsey therapy.

When Healing Becomes a Crime exposes the overall failure of the War on Cancer, while revealing how yesterday's "unorthodox" treatments are emerging as tomorrow's medicine. It probes other promising unconventional cancer treatments that have also been condemned without investigation, delving deeply into the corrosive medical politics and powerful economic forces behind this suppression. As alternative medicine finally regains its rightful place in mainstream practice, this compelling book will not only forever change the way you see medicine, but could also save your life.

An excellent book of what has been going on in America for the past
100 years. A real eye opener.

          5 out of 5 stars A Real Eye-opener.......2007-05-24

Ausubel's book is a real eye-opener, not only of the alternative cancer treatments that are out there, but of the unfortunate way of business that perpetuates keeping them under wraps. So many people could be using viable treatments that don't harm in the way that radiation and chemo do, but organized medicine/pharmaceutical companies have too much to lose if the word gets out.
This book should be a must read for anyone studying "health" care, politics, and ethics. Also, anyone faced with cancer in their life or the life of someone they care about.

4 out of 5 stars A Very Impressive Book with One Fatal Flaw.......2007-02-26

I was in most respects very impressed by this book. Ausubel did a great deal of meticulous research in order to tell the complete story of Harry Hoxsey's (and his successor's) efforts to bring his cancer remedy to mankind. He is a very careful, conscientious investigative jounalist. Ausubel puts the story in the context of a centuries-long war between allopathic and empiric medicine. He covers all of the bases and is extremely informative. Ausubel is also a fine, clever writer. Having said all of this, it is very tempting to give the book 5 stars. I would except Ausubel ultimately makes one mistake which detracts from his great history and analysis.

Despite all of the evidence of how corrupt the medical establishment is and the degree to which the regulators have derailed promising alternatives, Ausubel still pins his hope on bureaucrats conducting or overseeing valid medical research which will ultimately determine the appropriate direction for cancer treatment. However, central planning never works, not in the Soviet Union and not in determining medical practice in the U.S. While Ausubel does give it some exposure, he does not enthusiastically endorse the only practical solution to advancing the state of medicine: a genuine free market, where patients can go to whatever type of doctor they want to and use any type of treatment they choose. And where insurance companies are allowed to decide which types of treatments they will or will not cover, whether "orthodox" or alternative. Only medical freedom will allow encouraging alternatives to thrive and for advances in treatments to replace protocols which are seriously lacking.

What about quackery you say? Well, many of the treatments in use today are quackery by any objective standard, so we are not talking about some dreadful contingency, but the reality of today's regulated system / protection racket. And given complete freedom, we would see independent labs conduct their own investigations to determine which treatments to recommend and certify, much as we have organizations like Consumer's Union and Underwriters Laboratories doing in their domains.

5 out of 5 stars What an Expose!.......2006-07-07

This book had me riveted from the very first pages. The amount of work and research that went into this book proves, at least to me, the dedication Kenny Ausubel had for getting the full facts on both sides of the medicine involved -alternative and traditional. His deep research left me with even less confidence in traditional scientific medicine than I already had, which wasn't much except for acute care. My already very low opinion of the AMA, FDA, and big pharma was only confirmed and strongly convicted after reading this book. I have been recommending this book to everyone and that includes my online radio show audience. I very highly recommend everyone read this book so you can be informed to make the decisions for your own health.

co-author of Whole Health for Happy Dogs

          5 out of 5 stars A must read!.......2004-12-21

I really enjoyed this book. I know people who have benefitted from Hoxsey treatment so that is why I was drawn to this book in the first place. It is very interesting to me that Hoxsey and his 17 clinics were pushed out of the United States. It seems that anything that wont make the pharmaceutical companies any money, is going to be targeted and yes, Hoxsey treatment was, even though it was helping people. In the response to the person who gave one star and claims they are making millions of dollars. The 3500 dollar is a LIFETIME charge. If you get cancer again you can go back for treatment. Here 3500 dollars will get you ONE emergency room trip and an x-ray. The doctors at the Biomedical Center in Tijuana are actual medical doctors and they are not receiving Mexican minimum wage. Also, once you arrive you go through testing. They take your blood, they have labs, x ray machines and most other medical technology for testing cancer. Those things cost money. It is not quite the money making scheme you make it out to be. All I know is 2 weeks on the Hoxsey diet and my tumors were gone, when the doctors here told me I had to have them surgerically removed. 5 years later I have never had surgery. :)

                  Book Description

In the 16th century, when explorers travelled deeper into the jungles of South America in search of gold and spices, they brought back many colourful tales of their adventures to amaze and impress their sponsors. None of these tales was more astonishing, or caused more concern, than that of the mystical properties of the substance with which the natives anointed their darts and arrows. So begins the astonishing true story of the discovery of one of the most important substances in medical science. Curare poison was to become the cornerstone of modern anaesthetics and went on to provide the key to how we understand the nervous system, leading to drugs as diverse as indigestion pills and Prozac. More recently it has led to our understanding of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. In this fascinating book, Professor Stanley Feldman traces the evolution of a substance that has saved countless lives and revolutionized the way we see our minds and bodies.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Medical Stories.......2003-11-12

This book is both informative and highly entertaining. Burden and Grant have distilled truly amazing stories of a medical ilk which pertain to and are of interest to both American and Canadian readers. I was fascinated by the pioneering medical research done by Alexander Graham Bell, especially his efforts to identify the location of the assassin's bullet in President Garfield, and Bell's breakthroughs in cancer and x-ray therapy. The new information on the Titanic and the weird coincidences which tie in the dead of the Titanic and the presence of her identical sister ship the Olympic with the Halifax explosion were downright spooky. The account of Dr. Brinkley's early "Viagra", the implantation of goats testicles in willing patients, really astounded me as to the extent people will go to rejuvenate sexual vitality.

                      Product Description

Three women go into labor at the same time, and there's only one doctor in town. A man with a chainsaw nearly cuts off his nose, and the nearest plastic surgeon is 150 miles away. It sounds spectacular to us, but it's all in a day's work for a country doctor. This collection of true tales is a compelling read, and it illustrates the hard work and dedication of the men and women of medicine. Anyone who likes to read and especially fans of TV's popular medical dramas will love this book!
