A students point of view.......2007-09-15
I am a chem major and had the worst luck of having a terrible instructor and book for my introductory classes. After a few horrible attempts at teaching I asked a different professor if they had a book they recommended. I ttold them that I would be trying to do this independently from class and that as a chem major I would need get a good solid grounding in chem. The professor gave me this book saying that it had been rejected by the committee that selects the books for the intro chem classes.
Cons: there are a few mistakes in this book and when I asked the professor why it was rejected she stated it was because there were some chemistry in the book that was wrong.
Pros: I loved the book. It was very easy to read and to follow especially if going on it independently ( of course when I had questions I asked my graduate level friends and they cleared this up). Overall it was a great book it really explained it on easy terms at least well enough that when other future professors went over a topic I found I could either grasp what they were talking about much quicker than the other students around me or I had gone a little more in depth than the professor wanted to go but because I did I was able to understand it better and quicker. The book is not perfect but it is a great basic chem book. Even now 2 semesters later I got unlucky to get stuck with a really dry hard to understand professor and I am using this book to reference as I once again continue to do independent learning.
One more note: I use this book as reference book so I have never read it back to back..I have always followed the syllabus in my classes and just looked up what I needed to know, worked out the example problems, and the cumulative problems. When my answered differed from the text that was when I asked my TA to help me solve. This has worked fabulously for me. I hope that this review helped. Heck for the price it can't hurt to try it. You probably won't regret it.
Sorry, but I am finding incredibly bad mistakes in this..........2005-03-03
It's too bad that this book isn't that badly written, though I disagree with the way the book is organized. I got asked to teach chemistry at our local community college for mainly nursing and respiratory therapists. It's their only chemistry course, and we didn't make it through two weeks of this book without finding so many errors in the questions in the back of the chapters, the quizzes, and I am finding more and more on the CD-ROM provided with this. I did not pick this book, and the department has gotten me another recommended chemistry book to replace this one, coming in next week. In the meantime, I have to double-check all the answers and do a lot of the tests and quizzes on my own with material from other sources, because the stuff for this book is so bad. This is not the fault totally of the writers, but of the publisher too, who needs to have someone capable of checking and proofreading who knows chemistry, and can sit there with a calculator and check all the answers. I cannot expose a group of students going into medical professions, who need to have a good basic grounding in chemistry, to such a badly proofed text!

Excellent NMR book for the ones 'in between'.......2005-08-12
Lambert and Mazzola's NMR book strikes a nice balance between the weighty tomes aimed at NMR specialists, and the structure-determination only books aimed purely at synthetic organic chemists. For someone like me, who is interested in the experimental and technical aspects of the NMR spectrometer and of NMR spectroscopy, but only because he wants to run good, clean NMR experiments, this book is marvelous. Lambert combines concise and clear discussions of key concepts like relaxation, NOEs, phase cycling, and processing parameters, with succint and illustrative examples. One of the unique aspects of this book is the listing of ballpark parameters for many experiments including ones like mixing times, no. of scans, relaxation times etc. For all parameters, the essential things, and those essential things which you have to watch out for, are both carefully explained.
Lambert's book is a very useful tool for those chemists who are 'in between'- that is, those who want to do structure determination themselves and also learn the practical and fine points of spectral acquisition as well as processing, without too much detail, either instrumental or mathematical. Lambert and Mazzola give us just the right amount. A must have on the shelf of any scientist interested in NMR.

Giap cannot be considered but a genius of war, capable of hurting the great American superpower by using small war tactics and a resolve to stay the course. I found the research compelling even thogh this is indeed a pro-Giap study. I highly recommend this book for being sympathetic to a non-western and anti-American (militarily anyway) figure. It is easy to read, altrhough somewhat lacking in concrete biography. And it is good at explaining tactics.

Currey obviously fawns on Giap. Currey has shown no criticil analysis at all in either confirming or refutting Giap's claims. He simply passes them on. At times one cannot tell whether one is reading Currey or Giap.
A Must Read Account For Students of Military History.......2001-08-05
Vietnam history is one of invasion, going back a thousand years. Chinese, Khmer, French, Japanese, and finally the Americans. The Vietnamese have struggled with all of these. If one puts Vietnamese history into this context, one starts to realize that there is no other story like the Vietnamese saga.
General Giap is a figure that must be studied by any serious student of warfare history. Giap was a arduious student of Napoleon, very serious, totally dedicated to his cause. While the fighting spirit and mettle of the Viet Minh cannot be understated, Giap's victory at Dien Bien Phu was nothing short of spectacular, using his army of barefoot soldiers. His grasp of logistics, and his sense of flexability on the battlefield are unsurpassed in modern warfare. His victory gave hope to colonial peoples all over the world, and signaled the end of colonialism. He proved the indiginous people could defeat a modern, powerful army. He fought the riches, most technologically advanced nation ever known to a standstill.
I have totally enjoyed Cecil Curry's book on Giap. Curry's book does not try to glorify the man, nor does he make him out to be an evil communist. He simply tries to tell his story, and why Giap is the genius he is. Also, Curry goes into the excesses of the Vietnamese communist, as well as that of the French, Vietnamese oposition, and the Americans: He never tries to gloss over anything. Curry has some interviews with Giap, which makes the book even more interesting.
This book should be read by anyone who loves military history, whether professionally or not. Any officer in any army could learn something here. Love him or hate him, Giap was a formidable foe, both to his foreign enemies, and those at home. History will remember Giap, and Curry's book will be the definitive source on his story for a long time to come.
