If you can't get to Egypt anytime soon, take John McDonald's informative tour of beloved Queen Nefertari's tomb, which has only been open to the public since 1995. The beautifully structured House of Eternity is replete with full-color photographs of the contrasting desert landscape, the elaborate tomb, and the paintings. Included are explanations of the hieroglyphs and artwork, plus interesting snippets from Nefertari's culture. For example, the queen's own status wasn't enough to make her powerful in the afterlife. The magical chapter 17 from the Egyptian Book of the Dead contains a spell that is painted on Nefertari's tomb walls to assure her transformation from playing senet, to becoming a "ba" bird, then finally worshipping a lion-headed god. To ensure success, the spell ends right at the doorway that marks the burial chamber.

Most souls were believed to experience the judgment of Osiris--not so with Nefertari, whose tomb contains no mention of this trial. In fact, most of the gods seem to be greeting Nefertari and urging her through the many passages to Necropolis, the city of the dead. Although the annexes are not open to the public, McDonald has included a photograph and discussion of the only evidence of Nefertari in mummified form.

With descriptions of the Egyptian gods and the people's beliefs about death being an eternity, McDonald reveals the magnificent culture behind the fragility of the restoration of this art, funded by the Getty Foundation. --Susan Swartwout

Book Description

Nefertari, the favorite queen of Ramses II, was buried about 3200 years ago in the most exquisitely decorated tomb in Egypt's Valley of the Queens. Discovered in 1904, the tomb had deteriorated to a disastrous extent when emergency consolidation began in 1986. The six-year conservation project
was completed in 1992 and in November 1995 the tomb was reopened to visitors. In this fascinating exploration of the tomb, McDonald takes the reader through each chamber, describing the hieroglyphic messages depicted in the brilliant wall paintings, and discussing the images within the context of
the Egyptian belief system. The study also offers insights into the life of Nefertari, the development and symbolism of royal tombs, construction and decoration of the tombs, and the Getty Conservation Institute's role in restoring and stabilizing the wall paintings. This premier volume in the
Culture and Conservation series is punctuated with historic black-and-white and more recent color photographs that illustrate the vibrant beauty of the wall paintings and the extent of their restoration. Visitors to the tomb and the armchair traveler will find this an excellent resource for
understanding Nefertari's journey to the afterlife.

4 out of 5 stars Profusely illustrated.......2006-06-20

The book begins with chapters describing the context of the life of Nefertari and of her tomb. The final chapter, about half of the book, is a tour through the tomb, explaining the pictures and text on the walls. These pictures are almost entirely of Nefertari and the divinities she would meet in the afterlife. No pictures of day-to-day life here.

The book is profusely illustrated. Out of the 120 pages, the Getty Museum claims there are 89 color and 12 black-and-white illustrations. I haven't counted them myself, but the numbers seem right -- most pages have color illustrations on them, and many pages consist entirely of such illustrations. I would estimate that about 80% of the wall surface of the tomb is shown.

love the book, but wish it had more complete photos of the entire tomb. seeing the tomb in pieces as it were, makes it difficult to imagine how it really is.

4 out of 5 stars how many color illustrations? Buy at your own risk........2003-09-25

In none of the editorial or customer reviews, nor in any part of the amazon page on this book, is there a very elementary and crucial bit of information -- how many color illustrations does this book contain? It might be 4. It might be 20. Who knows? But none of the reviewers, nor amazon, sees fit to let prospective buyers know. Buy at your own risk, I guess. Since neither the book info, nor Amazon, tells us how many color illustrations, perhaps the number is quite modest. I rate this book as four stars to give it the benefit of the doubt -- but without the critical information, I haven't wanted to buy it, so can't really say what it should be rated.

5 out of 5 stars Nefertari - Queen of Egypt.......2000-12-24

Books about Ancient Egypt usually deal with her Pharaoh's, the State Religion, Ancient Monuments or art treasures . Little is known about most of the Queens of Ancient Egypt. The better known queens, Hatchepsut and Cleopatra ruled in their own right. Nefertari was the principle wife of one of Ancient Egypt's greatest Pharaoh's, Ramesses the Great. Ramesses built many temples and monuments during his long reign, some of which are still standing today including the Ramesseum, and the two Temple's at Abu Simbel. The smaller temple was dedicated to Nefertari. Very few temples or monuments were dedicated to anyone but the Pharaoh or one of the many Gods. The book " House of Eternity, The Tomb of Nefertari" tells as much of the story of Queen Nefertari as is known today. The Tomb of Nefertari is one of the most beautiful surviving monuments of Pharaonic Egypt. Since the Tomb was discovered in 1904, much damage has been caused by tourists. The tomb was closed to the public and preservation of the artwork undertaken by the Getty Institute. The tomb was re-opened to the public in 1995.. This book gives the reader a guided tour of the Tomb. The pictures in the book are spectacular. The author John McDonald takes the reader through the construction and decoration of the tomb, and then guides the reader through the journey into the Egyptian afterlife undertaken by Nefertari. The pictures on the tomb walls are from the Book of the Dead and the meaning of each is explained as Nefertari travels from the doorway of her tomb to her final resting place. I would rate this book as an essential addition to the library of anyone seriously interested in the history of Ancient Egypt and would advise anyone planning to visit the Tomb to read the book before hand.

THERE is another line not always so readily drawn in the tenements, yet the real boundary line of the Other Half: the one that defines the "flat." The law does not draw it at all, accounting all flats tenements without distinction. The health officer draws it from observation, lumping all those which in his judgment have nothing, or not enough, to give them claim upon the name, with the common herd.

This publication from a university in Michigan is just terrible! The cover is very rough and cheap but the worst part is that you cannot even see the illustrations because they look like they were done on a copy machine and are so dark all you see is a black blob of ink. I've never seen such a horrible product actually being sold as new. I immediately returned it for a full refund and bought a paperback version at Barnes & Noble.

4 out of 5 stars New York from the bottom.......2007-04-28

This is a relatively short book, giving a comtemporary account of the grinding poverty and harsh working conditions experienced by many of New York's poor in the late nineteenth century. Riis was a journalist, and the narrative reads like a long piece of investigative journalism, albeit laced with real-life anecdotes.

The main issue in Riis's lifetime was the effect the book had on public policy, which seems from the introduction to this edition to have been significant. The open question now is whether Riis was describing a transitional phase of capitalism, or a permanent feature of it. Or, indeed a permanent feature of the human condition seeing as Communism did little to alleviate poverty. One could postulate that much of what Riis describes is nowadays more characteristic of the Third World, and that although poverty exists in the West, it is relative rather than absolute poverty. It's a difficult subject to disentangle, but one that's nonetheless interesting to think about.

This edition is amply illustrated with Riis's photos. What can let it down is Riis's attitudes, which at times grate - that's to say, he is at once surprisingly advanced in his views of black people and women, yet is quick to dismiss whole races like the Chinese in a sweeping racial stereotype. Also, he advocates a good dose of Christianity for the "heathen" races as a panecea - hmmm......

Despite these drawbacks, this is at once an interesting period piece and a book which can prompt thought on the nature of poverty. It also destroys the quaint nostalgia for "the good old days" of the past.

5 out of 5 stars Lower East Side battlefield.......2004-06-28

What sets THE BATTLE WITH THE SLUM apart from Jacob Riis' classic, HOW THE OTHER HALF LIVES, is this book's more active response to the conditions of the poor and disenfranchised in New York City's slums. HOW THE OTHER HALF LIVES was a breakthrough in reporting. The reader was given a barrage of facts and statistics, as well as photographs and ethnic break-downs of each of the immigrant groups.

While THE BATTLE WITH THE SLUM also includes photographs and statistics, it also reports on HOW these conditions have to be handled, and details the victories Riis and the reformers achieved in ridding the area of its more notorious elements. In almost militaristic fashion, Riis and the reformers battled corrupt local political machines (read Tammany Hall), interested businesses, and greedy landlords. Each neighborhood is practically mapped out like a battlefield. While HOW THE OTHER HALF LIVES gives the reader an appreciation for the suffering that the poor, BATTLE WITH THE SLUM gives the reader an appreciation for Jacob Riis and what others like him have done.

4 out of 5 stars Politics and Poverty.......2004-01-01

Though not as heart-rending as "How the Other Half Lives", this book by Riis is important to shed light on how society cleaned up some of the worst slums in US history.

Tammany Hall, the Democratic party machine, was responsible for political patronage jobs that were do-nothing plums; a photo shows the street-cleaning of Tammany broomsmen versus that of a reformer who took over cleaning the precinct's streets. Various charitable societies worked strenuously to ameliorate the worst of the slums, to pass laws requiring light and air in tenements, though landlords were clever in circumventing or perverting the legal requirements (a window in a room could be on an inside wall; the airshaft--a thin passageway between buildings was all the air many apartments got.) Schools were at first overcrowded rooms with no desks, no ventilation and seventy students attempting to learn. Reformers got desks, ventilated buildings, smaller class sizes. This is a fascinating story of how people worked together to try to better an abusive situation in the poorest sections of American cities.

5 out of 5 stars Wake up Call.......2000-11-07

This book hilights the lows of urban life around the turn of the century, a time when immigration and migration were happening all around. City life in america had a huge underside with noise, crime, poverty, and squalor. Racial and ethnic conflicts were previlant. Riis' photos capture this side of city life in America.

              Book Description

In this compelling work, Keith Gandal reveals how the slum in nineteenth-century America, long a topic for sober moral analysis, became in the 1890s an unprecedented source of spectacle, captured in novels, newspapers, documentary accounts, and photographs. Reflecting a change in the middle-class vision of the poor, the slum no longer drew attention simply as a problem of social conditions and vice but emerged as a subject for aesthetic, ethnographic, and psychological description. From this period dates the fascination with the "colorful" alternative customs and ethics of slum residents, and an emphasis on nurturing their self-esteem. Middle-class portrayals of slum life as "strange and dangerous" formed part of a broad turn-of-the-century quest for masculinity, Gandal argues, a response to a sentimental Victorian respectability perceived as stifling. These changes in middle-class styles for representing the urban poor signalled a transformation in middle- class ethics and a reconception of subjectivity. Developing a broad cultural context for the 1890s interest in the poor, Gandal also offers close, groundbreaking analysis of two of the period's crucial texts. Looking at Jacob Riis's How the Other Half Lives (1890), Gandal documents how Riis's use of ethnographic and psychological details challenged traditional moralist accounts and helped to invent a spectacular style of documentation that still frames our approach as well as our solutions to urban problems. Stephen Crane's Maggie: A Girl of the Streets (1893) pushed ethnographic and psychological analysis even farther, representing a human interiority centered around self-image as opposed to character and exploring not only different customs but a radically different ethics in New York's Bowery--what we would call today a "culture of poverty." Gandal meanwhile demonstrates how both Riis's innovative "touristic" approach and Crane's "bohemianism" bespeak a romanticization of slum life and an emerging middle-class unease with its own values and virility. With framing discussion that relates slum representations of the 1890s to those of today, and featuring a new account of the Progressive Era response to slum life, The Virtues of the Vicious makes fresh, provocative reading for Americanists and those interested in the 1890s, issues of urban representation and reform, and the history of New York City.

The papers which form this autobiography were originally published in The Outlook, the chapter telling of my going "home to mother" in The Churchman, and parts of one or two others in The Century Magazine. To those who have been asking if they are made-up stories, let me say here that they are not. And I am mighty glad they are not. I would not have missed being in it all for anything.

In all of which I have made no account of a factor which is at the bottom of half our troubles with our immigrant population, so far as they are not of our own making: the loss of reckoning that follows uprooting; the cutting loose from all sense of responsibility, with the old standards gone, that makes the politician's job so profitable in our large cities, and that of the patriot and the housekeeper so wearisome. We all know the process. The immigrant has no patent on it. It afflicts the native, too, when he goes to a town where he is not known.

5 out of 5 stars An awesome story of romance and patriotism.......1998-07-20

This book is worth the wait it takes to find it. It not only tells Riis's story of his battle with the slums, but it is also the story of a simple man's journey to America and how he fell in love with her. Intertwined is a love story that if not for history would be quite unbelievable in its romance and ending. The book shows what the faith of one man can accomplish in our world when that faith is put into action. This is a heart-warming and positive book that should be reprinted.

Dwight Moody is a columnist whose reflections on religion and American culture have been widely published in regional and national papers and journals: here they're gathered together under one cover at last, blending personal observation and experience with public insights which combine reflection with humor. Short essays reflect on everyday themes and move easily between such diverse topics as the Biography Channel on TV and medieval religion.

This collection of Dwight Moody's short essays and "columns" is a pleasure to read. If you have read some of Dwight's work then you, mostly, know what to expect. If you have never read any of his work, then I strongly suggest it for anybody with an interest in the life of churches, the life of the Church, ministry, Christianity, peace, and/or love.

Moody's writing style is accessible and precise. The clean precision of his writing does not go so far as to be clinical but does function so that Moody has clearly defined terms and subtle nuances within his writing. I have enjoyed his work and look forward to his future contributions.

Additionally, Isaac Moody's artwork within this book is beautiful and talented work. I've been a fan of Isaac's artwork (I own 3 pieces) for a while and am further impressed by the material within this book.

                    Book Description

Welcome to Oddville. Here you will find flying babies, giant robots, undead rock bands, evil scientists, brick-throwing cats, talking monkeys, and eight-year-old super-hero Melanie McKay, better known as Jetcat! It all begins with a kiss. When young Tod Johnson gives Melanie McKay a peck on the cheek, Daisy appears and takes to the skies. From there, it's a mad dash through town for Jetcat to catch the gravity-defying infant and bring her back to earth. These things are things that can only happen in a place called Oddville, and only from the mind of a cartoonist like Jay Stephens. These classic comic strips began in independent newspapers before jumping into their own collected book, which then disappeared for many years, only now to finally return. Oddville is a curious, bizarre, and hysterical book unlike any other. And it contains the first ever appearance of Jetcat anywhere! Take a left at weird and head up the road for about a mile, and settle down in Oddville.

I enjoyed Oddville. It has interesting characters that seem to speak really loud with hilarious remarks to each other. This book has alot of clever lines in it to make you laugh out loud. I stumbled upon Oddville at a local comic shop that highly recommended it to me for something not many people have tried. Pick it up and enjoy it.
