get lost in a real world.......2000-05-04
I saw this book in my doctor's office waiting room, I was swallowed up in it during my wait. After my appointment I stayed and looked more, amongst the sneezing feverish folks even! Beautiful inspirational drawings!

Scientific Commentaries by Grard G. Aymonin Originally published in 1613 by botanist-apothecary Basilius Besler, the monumental book known as the Hortus Eystettensis was, and is, the greatest botanical illustrated book ever created. With 367 plates depicting more than 1,000 species of plants, the book was spectacular even in black and white; the very few hand-colored copies are priceless. When Abrams issued its facsimile edition of Besler's great Florilegium in 1989, and followed that in 1994 with Hortus Eystettensis, featuring selected images, it became clear that there is great demand for a poster book of these irresistible botanicals.
Here, then, are 27 superb, oversize, full-color prints suitable for framing, including images of tulips, irises, roses, lemons, and artichokes. Gardeners and horticulturalists, print collectors and botanists, indeed anyone who simply appreciates the beauty of botanicals and wants to frame them or give them as gifts will enjoy this book.

Could have had a much better selection of prints.......2004-01-25
please pardon my strong opinion, but i consider myself a huge fan of the Hortus Eystettensis. the original book consists of 367 beautiful plates of which 27 are reproduced here. the reproductions are very nice and the prints are excellent, but the selection of prints leaves much to be desired in my opinion in that many of the most beautiful and showy prints that you would expect aren't reproduced while many of the much lesser prints are. obviously this is merely my opinion, but i was really surprised not to find many of the obviously gorgeous plates represented and in their place many of the far less interesting and beautiful ones. this selection simply does not do justice to the book it represents, and nowhere in this book is there any explanation of this selection (did the British Library not want the 27 "best" plates represented?). only 5 of these 27 prints would have made my favorite top 50 prints from the original. the plates reproduced here are #s 10,14,68,51,70,87,145,96,104,118,199,140,142,150,186,204,209,234,324,223,335,337,348,355,357,123,364. Taschen has a wonderful, reasonably-priced reproduction of the entire Hortus Eystettensis called "The Garden at Eichstatt" (and a pocket book selection of the same title) and Nicholas Barker has a wonderful book called "Hortus Eystettensis: The Bishop's Garden" which are highly recommended in place of this.

The quality of the prints is very good and they are a good size. The price is good enough to buy 2, one to use to frame and the other for the coffee table. Great photos!!
Unbelieveable Value.......2000-07-11
This book offers 27 beautiful, botanical prints in a variety of colors that are ideal for framing. (Between my sister, best friend and myself we're framing 20 of the 27). However, if you are looking for a nice coffee table book keep in mind that this is paper-backed. Also, if you are interested in reading about botanical prints this book has little narrative.
Beautiful, frameworthy prints!.......2000-05-15
In the 1600s, the Prince-Bishop of Eichsttt, Germany created a stunning garden filled with flowers, fruit, vegetables, trees and pleasure-houses, at the center of which was his palace. His intention was to recreate the Garden of Eden here on earth, and he searched everywhere for the rarest and most lovely of plants to include. His endeavor was documented by some of the best artists of the time, who drew these beautiful botanical images, which then were printed on the largest paper then made, and bound into books. Only a handful of these were hand-colored, to be offered for sale to those whose pockets were deep enough to afford them.
The 27 images selected for this book are exquisitely printed, each measuring about 10" x 13". The colors are fresh and the paper stock has a beautiful, soft sheen and a good weight. These botanical illustrations are fine enough to be framed, and are useful as resource for the artist and designer.
The first time I encountered these images was in poster form about 20 years ago. I loved them, and was so happy to see them offered again. The designs are elegant, some more graphic and modern than others, some more clearly antique. This book is worthwhile for all those who love botanical illustrations.

BIG Disappointment.......2002-03-01
While the size and scope of this book is impressive, the quality of the prints is poor, at least in comparison with the wonderful prints found in the book "Botanical Prints From the Hortus Eystettensis" I purchased the Besler Florilegium expecting to find prints of the same caliber but they lack the detail and antique look of the prints found in the Hortus Eystettensis.
If I had a do-over button, I wouldn't purchase this book.

I purchased this book as a gift for someone who owns a Besler print. In fact, they own the print that is on the cover of this book. The large thick book is a very lovely display of Besler's famous prints, organized by the seasons in which the plants he observed in the garden grew. It would make a good gift to anyone, especially gardeners with large empty coffee tables.

Outdated and overpriced........2007-05-05
I was rather disappointed in this book. Much of the material was so "generalized" that it was not at all helpful, most was just plain common sense, and some was completely outdated. (Hey Kirk.....High Def IS here!) I would say that maybe 25% of the information was useful. Unfortunately, books covering this category seem to be rather scarce, so there are not too many other options.

Amazing examples, teaching, practicals on more than just filming! This book gives information on how to treat customers, how to market your video business, correct ways to write your disclaimers for jobs, and so much more. I bought the book and have already used several principles taught in the book with an upcoming wedding I have.
Your confidence and your professionalism will increase the minute you start reading. If you are a novice or a professional there is always something new to learn and this book will get you to the next level. With a DVD included in the book you can't go wrong. Also the book is full of recommendations for other websites and materials that will give you even more guidance in this field of videography.

Wedding Video Misinformation.......2006-07-27
I found this book 25% somewhat useful info, 25% "Duh", and the rest either fuzzy, or just plain wrong. Like the author's understanding of the Rule of Thirds and many of his "insights" into wedding video.
Its a shame that materials like this are out there misinforming unsuspecting newcomers to the trade.

This book has a lot of useful information but I found myself wanting more. It appears to be the first or only one out there though so that makes it worth buying.

As someone who was recently married and a New York wedding video provider at Iris Cinema (www.iriscinema.com), I can speak from both sides. You're better off searching the Web for information than reading through this material. It is dated and doesn't cover the options that people are offering in the wedding video and wedding photography markets. It may have been current when it was published in 1994, but it certainly won't be of much use now.

Ulster Relived.......2006-05-20
I was delighted to read Walter Ellis's book and have since passed it on to several friends. All agree that it is beautifully written and shows Ellis as a master of his craft, both as storyteller and narrator. I just wish more people had the opportunity to share it as it is a book which will touch the heart regardless of whether or not you have lived or visited Ulster during that period. It is refreshing also to read the Protestant view of the troubles seen, as it were, at first hand. Interesting also, as a female, to view the world through his eyes. I laughed and I cried for these are times which will never be seen again. I, for one, would love to read the sequel.

A terrific book. I agree with Mr Moore. It can be read on many levels: as a description of childhood and the challenges of the teenage years and early adulthood; as a treatise on friendship; as a rites of passage, without the glibness of Hollywood, and as an examination of The Troubles. I recommend it wholeheartedly. My only criticism is of Amazon, who do not appear to have not priced it. I had to order the book direct from the publishers in Scotland. This is a pity as it deserves to be available easily to readers in the States.
a wonderful read.......2006-04-26
This is a terrific book. Deftly written, it is funny, moving, provocative and informative. It describes the author's upbringing in Belfast as the city descended into the violence known as 'The Troubles.' Although outsiders saw this essentially as sectarian, of Catholics against Protestants, Ellis describes a more complex situation, where Protestants could also oppose the division of Ireland and the allegiance of the north to the Crown. His friend Ronnie Bunting, a Protestant like Ellis, symbolised this complexity. Bunting joined a fanatical Republican group and became a ruthless terrorist, responsible for many deaths, including the murder of one Mrs Thatcher's favourite supporters. Ellis's relationship with Bunting dominates the book. Ellis struggled through childhood and his teenage years to break free of Bunting, which he knew he had to do. Only as a young adult embarking on what became a successful career as a journalist did he succeed. By now Bunting was doomed. He was later shot in his home in Belfast by masked men, whom Ellis believes were probably British special forces. This is a book about growing up, family, friendship, ambition and Ireland. I recommend it without reservation.
