Book Description
Every adult can recall the serene kind of safety they felt in their childhood "special place"-a platform in a backyard tree, a secret corner of a garden, or a well-hidden fort in the woods. Hideaways demonstrates how adults recreate those hidden retreats in the form of fishing cabins, garden huts, weekend studios, and other intimately-designed spaces where the owners are often more "at home" than they are at home. Sometimes completely spontaneous, sometimes planned to a purpose, these personal architectures offer a fantastic range of building styles - but each is clearly driven by the urge to create a place where one can be utterly relaxed.
Sonya Faure presents over 200 fabulous, fanciful, and freeform models - as well as more practical, but never quite conventional designs, each meant to inspire: from a place where Huck Finn would hide out to highly designed small houses by Le Corbusier. There are vacation retreats in exotic locations on three continents, and backyard kingdoms to be visited-all in one book.
Illustrated with photographs of nearly 200 retreats, this book explains how the stress of daily life and the quest for privacy have rendered hideaways so popular with grownup city-dwellers, architects, and designers who just need a little space.

Uh... what?.......2001-08-24
I acquired the software used - without any manuals. So, I purchased this book in hopes that it would help me to learn the software. I was disappointed. The author obviously believed his readers would already have some experience with the software. (Perhaps if you already have some experience with Lightwave, this book will prove to be a big help to you.) I have ordered another book from Amazon which is supposed to include some tutorials. I'm hoping that after reading the new book and going through the tutorials, this book might provide some further insight. (Got my fingers crossed)
Awesome Book.......2000-06-28
I've looked around for a while to find a good LightWave book because I knew very little about the program when I received it. When I read this book I was shocked. I loved it from cover to cover and have got though it several times. It is good for both beginners and advanced users.
lightwave pover guide.......2000-04-06
Could not recommend this book to anybody.
Being experienced 3d animator and using Softimage and 3Dmax for many years, was able to use this book with the big DIFFICULTIES! A lot of useless information for the book which claims it would introduce you into the new software....what for I need to know the Authors' ideas about "how to write bills to the clients"?...I would prefer to have more info about the Modeler...
For my opinion, there is luck of logic in the structure - both of the book and the CD.
NOT WORTH its money :-(
Power comes in many voltages.......2000-03-13
Dan Ablan's LightWave Power Guide was the first guide to the software powerhouse Lightwave 3D that I have purchased. The book was intended for version 5.0 of the software, thus it is a little outdated for those who are looking for a book that covers the latest version, 6.0. However, what the book covers applies to even the latest versions of Lightwave.
While the cover looks neat and the book is accompanied by a CD-ROM (filled with tutorial examples, some basic textures, plug-in trials, and example avi movies), the book really did somewhat disappoint me - in that it led me to believe that it was intended for both beginners and professionals. I found that this book did not help me to advance my skill very much, but rather was a well-written overview of the basic features (and some not-so-basic) of Lightwave 3D.
I would only recommend this book for beginners - especially those who have had no previous experience with any other 3D animation software. For them, this book will be a valuable resource; for me, it just takes up space on the shelf.

I love this book! Dan has helped my business grow by teaching me what I need to know to make my animations really shine! Thanks Dan "The Man" Ablan! I can't wait for your next book this summer! Amazon, save me a copy of "Inside L[6]"!

Forefront of 3-D Animation Design.......2007-04-16
From 2004's 'The Incredibles' to the great 2006's 'Monster House' & 'Happy Feet' knowledge of LightWave is at the forefront for how-to in spell-binding 3-D Animation. And this book takes you from a basic start to accelerating your own imagination to new heights. Ablan is able to make quite complicated procedures simple and step-by-step understandable. Those who complain may just want results without the time taken to learn. If you have thorough grounding in Photoshop you can do this! Once you follow Ablan's direction you discover your own. A fantastic book, excellent resource as part of your digital design library.
Definetly not for the beginner.......2004-11-09
I purchased this book in the hopes that I'd be able to learn LightWave 7. Sadly this book is definetly not for beginners. Early on I realized something was wrong when the book jumped straight into the Suface Editor. The chapters on modeling could hardly be described as tutorials. One modeling chapter dove straight into modeling a large skyscraper without teaching you many of the fundamentals of modeling. I felt like I was following a cook book. Step after step of 'type the following into the numeric window, check this option, uncheck that option.'. This is not how you learn. I had no understanding of why I was using the specified values and most of the time the author didn't go into any detail regarding it. The chapter on modeling a human face was both exciting and a let down. Hours upon hours of work and I still felt like the fundamentals escaped me, yet I had a decent looking model.
I went out and brought Inside Lightwave 8 soon after. I have to say, it is many many times better. It's written by the same author, but the pacing and examples are greatly improved. Even not having LightWave 8, I learned more in chapter 1-3 of that book then I did reading Inside Lightwave 7. Unfortunetly, for those without Lightwave 8, that book has limited usefulness.
I would not recommend this book to a beginner or newbie looking to learn Lightwave 7 from scratch.
A fairly good book, but shouldn't be the only one you have.......2004-01-23
While still trying to appreciate the huge task that the author undertook, I must say for those who consider buying the book to be aware that there are quite a few errors in the exercises that take some time to figure out (trial and error) for a LW newbie like me. At least I couldn't understand quite clearly how to get around LW's user interface just by following the explanations in the book.
The explanations about Lighting and Rendering are good, I didn't find any satisfactory coverage regarding texturing though. The best that I could do in that regard is just following the examples without knowing the "why" and consequently I don't think I have a thorough understanding to do any original texturing. Maybe there's assumptions that the target audience already know about texturing and the author just provided additional tips.
I would recommend to buy the DVD tutorial "Get Into Seven" to help you get started, some of the explanations there are much better to understand and can be combined with this book to help you learn LW. And with the basic skill from the DVD, the material in the book is making much more sense and you would even be able to spot the errors and correct them.
I hope all the errors are fixed and more explanations would be included in the "Inside Lightwave 8" edition.
Fair book, but not for the beginner.......2004-01-09
I was new to Lightwave when I purchased this book. On the surface it looked like it covers a good deal of material and it does. However, I take issue with the way some of it is presented. To the beginner, it felt like, "getting a drink from a fire hose." I was looking for a few simple examples to learn the basics from and gradually work to larger tutorials. I didn't find too much of that here. The first parts of the book jumped into texturing objects, before it really explained how to make the object in the first place. (i.e. modeling) This made it difficult to build objects that you could experiment on using different textures. The modeling section jumped right into designing a large city block or an entire human head at the start. It never really demonstrated how to do "simple" objects from start to finish. The closest it came to that delt with making subsections of skyscrapers that didn't look like anything until the entire building was completed. It would have been nice to do a few simple models before trying to build complex items like a city or human head. If you worked slowly through every step of the tutorials, you will eventually learn quite a bit. Unfortunately, by that time you've spent many, many hours before you have anything to show for the effort. You don't feel like you accomplish very much in the process. You can skip sections of the tutorials, but if you do, you will miss a trick or key that may not be repeated elsewhere.
The book has a good deal of tricks and information in it, but I still had to keep jumping between it and the Newtek manual before I was able to understand some sections.
Overall, it does cover a very large amount of modeling and texturing. I like that, but I didn't like how it didn't ramp up to "large projects." Finally, I would like to have seen a little more information on actually using Lightwave to animate with. It goes into overwhelming detail on modeling and texturing, but very little on making the model actually animate.

NewTek's LightWave has been a dominant player in the 3-D animation tools genre since its origin on the Amiga platform, and the latest version really shows its developers' commitment to keeping it at the head of the pack. Inside LightWave 6 sheds light on the many new features for the experienced LightWave user, and it's also a solid learning tool for new users.
The author is an experienced LightWave user and author--he's written two widely respected books (LightWave Power Guide and Inside LightWave 3D). His savvy is evident in the construction, layout, and content of this guide.
An introduction to LightWave--along with workflow and style--makes up the first part of the book. This section also covers features that are new to version 6, but because there is so much that is new (NewTek rewrote the program from the ground up) you won't find a simple list of what's been changed. Instead, the book approaches the program from the beginning, describing in detail how the two separate modules--Modeler and Layout--work together to form a powerful animation system.
Experienced users might find themselves skipping this section, but they might miss out on something important if they do. After all, this section gives a solid background of features that are particular to LightWave 6--the Surface Editor, Modeler, Layout, Graph Editor, and LightWave 6 Cameras.
The next two sections speak to those with some experience. Part II discusses modeling and the features of the Modeler, using lights, creating environments, and methods of character construction. Part III covers features of Layout, the part of LightWave in which scenes are constructed, including models, lights, cameras, render options, skeletal structures, kinematics, and compositing.
Appendices A and B wrap up the book with discussions, explanations, and examples of LightWave's Expressions and LScript features. Expressions are mathematical formulas bound to a section of a model that can be used to free the animator from the mundane task of key-framing every last element. LScripts are used for automating and repeating a given set of LightWave actions.
For new LightWave users, and for experienced users who are upgrading to LightWave 6, this book is a handy resource and clear guide to most, if not all, of LightWave's features--a must-have reference. --Mike Caputo

Customer Reviews:
Best 3d book I have bought........2002-03-31
I have spent a lot of money on 3d books in the past but this is the best by a distance, that I have bought. The head modeling tutorial in particular is just fantastic, I defy anyone to find a better modeling tutorial than this, its just brilliant. The really great thing is that the methods taught are easily transferable to other software packages and not just relevant to Lightwave. The only thing I would say is that if you are a beginner, prepare to work very hard, learning to make good 3d is tough, but if you are really prepared to do the hard work this book can take you a long way down the road. I would give it six out of five if I could !
Great Help.......2002-03-21
The book successfully demonstrates practical use of frequently used tools in addition to showing how to approach projects. It is great for beginners trying to learn the nuances of Lightwave. Although Dan could have saved a lot of trees by omitting the first chapter, the rest of the book has proved useful in learning the program. I would recommend it to everyone starting from ground zero as I did.
As with the previous Inside Lightwave Book.......2002-03-12
This was another great resource for me, both as far as learning new things, as well as for quick references in times of need =)
The only thing is.. this book is huge....and I mean BIG and HEAVY. Not the book you would carry around in a backpack.
Very good........2002-02-07
I have a very good job because of this book. Dan... You are the man.
Best overall text.......2001-12-02
This is probably the most comprehensive text I've used on LightWave. Very modeling intensive. It has rigging(bones)tutorials, but the "LW Applied 6.5/7" rigging tuorial is better. A must buy for the LW artist.

This book targets users who are intent on mastering the art of creating 3-D graphics and animations in this versatile, cross-platform program. There's a good combination of explanation of features and specific task instructions; for the latter, you use the project files on the included CD-ROM. The book starts off with advice on interface configuration and takes you all the way to sophisticated effects and animations. The authors explain the concepts of lighting, color, and motion and help you plan your project according to its purpose and intended audience. Next you learn about modeler, layout, and animation techniques such as physical, computer, and scanned models and polygons, layers, MetaNURBS, scenes, keyframing, virtual cameras, lenses, angles, and plug-ins. Part 2 teaches you to build 3-D scenes using the LightWave modeler. Part 3 has you create animation scenes and familiarizes you with Bones and Character animations and facial animation. The last part of the book focuses on rendering and postproduction processes. You learn compositing and output techniques, add video and sound effects, use the Super Cel Shader plug-in for cel animation, and learn the basics of Lscript. An appendix describes various Objects and Tools plug-ins. Besides project files, the CD-ROM also has demonstration versions of freeware and shareware plug-ins and sample models, tiles, and textures. --Kathleen Caster

Doesn't get to the point - not for the beginner.......2001-01-04
I've used Lightwave for a couple of small projects and learnt it a couple of years ago with a good teacher in a Multimedia course.
Since then, I've become a little rusty. This book isn't for you if you want to quickly pick up a few points that you've forgotten. For instance, something as easy as a keyboards shortcuts listing is missing (and with Lightwave being such a "foreign" GUI when compare to Adobe products, you need them!)
This book may be fine for those who have the hang of ii...
Frustrating.......2000-04-11
The book fails to fully explain some minor steps that a beginner might wish to understand in more detail. Information such as "feel free to look at this image closer by pulling it off this Book's CD-ROM" does not help if you don't know the name of the image, nor in which folder it may be. Also some of the captions don't correspond with the images (e.g. page 68). If you have a lot of time on your hands you may well be able to guess the missing links, but you will probably find yourself doing the lessons over in the belief that you missed an important step, only to discover that it is missing from the book.
Inside lightwave.......2000-03-07
Inside lightwave 3d is a must for anyone using lightwave. It is a superb well rounded book covering many aspect of the software that you just will not find any where else. Dan ablan book will help you if your new to lightwave or a seasoned professional.
well worth the money
I may as well have gotten mugged by Alban himself..........2000-02-03
The only reason I gave this book one star is because I couldn't give it less. The book is touted as a entry-level and intermediate manual, but right away it starts off in one of the more advanced aspects of the program (morph gizmo). If I had not been well-versed in 3D Studio Max & had previous 3d experiance, I would have been completly lost. The tutorials are fractured, B&W images in the book are misplaced, and phantom scenes the book refers to on the CD don't exist. I ended up frustrated, angry and uneccesarily $47 poorer. One should check NewTek's site to see what 3rd party instruction they recommend if they want to learn LW. However, if you DON'T want to learn Lightwave you should buy Alban's book.
A Bit Frustrating.......1999-12-13
If you need/want to learn Lightwave quickly, this book may not be the best. The sections that cover planning and profesional issues are excellent. The explanations of software functions are OK, but don't expect to much detail into what each action you perform is doing. The tutorials vary in quality. The first few seem out of place. Most of them are lacking in description, and there are quite a few typographical errors and some missing files on the CD. I spend a lot of time reading manuals and doing tutorials for a number of software packages, and this book has some of the most poorly written and constructed I have ever seen. If you don't mind spending LOTS of extra time trying to work through where the authors (there are actually six of them) and editors totally screwed up, take the plunge. But I don't think this book will be worth the money unless it gets re-edited.
Book Description
A troubled man seeking spiritual renewal in the wilderness experiences a wholly unexpected rebirth - as a walking monolith, half a ton of animate stone able to perform astonishing feats of strength and endurance but forever denied many of life's fundamental pleasures. As Concrete, Ronald Lithgow becomes an overnight celebrity and the focus of dark government operatives desperate to keep the secret of his metamorphosis from the public. Concrete must struggle with the loss of his humanity while discovering, perhaps for the first time, what it truly means to be human.

This re-evaluates the origin of Concrete once the script for the feature film was written. It is great (as I hope the movie will be...). There is also an interesting section on history of certain Concrete comic covers.
