This book presents a review of the principle approaches for visualizing DNA and RNA. Using scanning tunneling and atomic force microscopes, the three-dimensional image of the surface of nucleic acids can be seen at atomic-scale resolutions. Spreading methods provide useful details on structural features of isolated molecules, but the major constituent of living matter is water, and the cryomicroscope makes it possible to look at DNA in its aqueous environment. Genes can be detected simultaneously in situ in chromosomes using fluorescent probes, and also at the electron microscopic level. In cells, nucleic acids are localized and quantified by dyes; electron microscopy is used with cytochemical, immunocytological, nuclease, and in situ hybridization methods. The main potential applications for pathological studies are shown with particular aspects such as viral nucleic acids and in situ PCR.

A nice book on machine scheduling.......2001-10-15

Pinedo's book is an excellent reference for almost all problems in machine scheduling. The author is very economic with words and yet the explanations are incredibly clear. I use it for a graduate course in Scheduling that I teach. I often find myself referring to it whenever I need to review some particular class of scheduling problems. There is a chapter on metaheuristics that explains how these methods work - this is a bonus given that the book concentrates on theoretically rigorous methods. What I really like is the fact that step-by-step descriptions of many algorithms are provided, which can be used directly to write computer programs. The interested reader will find results related to structures of many scheduling problems. Overall this is a great book for teaching and research reference purposes. I have read two other texts on scheduling and I must say that this is by far the best.

Excellent literature review, Great Theories But... Expensive.......2000-12-21

Pinedo did an excellent job for compiling the stories of scheduling system. For a new researcher/grad student in scheduling issue, this is the book that you need -before jump to library and search through all journals. The organization is slightly complicate. So readers may need to prepare their study plan before going through the book from cover to cover. I don't own this book, still; just read it from the library. This book deserves 5 or even 6 stars if the price is more affordable. I wish I have it when got a real job after graduation.

Scheduling Theory made easy .......2007-08-29

Scheduling is the concept of sharing a scarce resource amongst users without starving any of the users, and at best gives the impression that every user has access to all of what that resource has to offer. This poses a challenge when the numbers of users increase dramatically or the duration of the jobs varies greatly. What makes this challenge even greater is that scheduling problems are mostly NP-Complete, with a very limited number of scenarios that are considered to fall under the P-type problem domain.

Single criterion scheduling are problems where the reader is interested in maximizing or minimizing only one thing or criteria (minimize the flow time, or minimizing the completion time). Many scenarios, machine shop or other wise, require more than criterions to be optimized. For example on a multi-processing machine, you want to minimize startup time and at the same time minimize completion time of all the tasks. There are times where these two criterions conflict - i.e. you might need to suspend a task thus delaying its completion time in order to start a newly arrived task. The point is that "sacrifices" must be made, and that is the point of heuristic-type algorithms; they aim to minimize the overall sacrifice one has to make in order to optimize everything near-perfectly. This does not always work, however, but considering the problem domain, it is a very good attempt at solving the unsolvable.

Multicriteria Scheduling: Theory, Models and Algorithms, by Vincent T'kindt and Jean-Chalres Billaut is the latest book that covers scheduling and more specifically multicriteria scheduling in research and applications thereof very well. The first edition of the text which was published in 2002, the authors mainly focused on the field of multicriteria scheduling along with all the algorithms, models, etc, that described the field. Being the first complete text dedicated to multicriteria scheduling and optimization, there were lots to talk about and even more has been developed in the past five or so years. For the second edition of the text, the authors builds and refines the first editions with new research results, new findings and many new algorithms. A number of chapters were rewritten such as Just-in-Time Scheduling problems (chapter 5), and the rest revised to include follow-up information and comments.

For those unfamiliar with the topic at hand, the authors spend the first couple of chapters talking about scheduling, its complexities and then delve into multicriteria scheduling and problems. If you have never heard or seen any scheduling problems, the first two chapters are a must; otherwise, it is still a good review as the authors use these chapters as the basis for later discussions. As you might expect, multicriteria scheduling shares a number of ideas from multicriteria optimization and theory. A chapter is dedicated to this topic as it is required notion for the rest of the text.

One addition to the this edition of the text which clearly demonstrates the authors' deep understanding of the topic both in research and commercial arena is chapter 6: Robustness consideration! Being in the field of Grid and HPC, I come across a number of texts that cover the area, but none have ever even attempted to cover robustness of an algorithm. In this chapter, the authors depict a number of algorithms discussed and discuss variation of that algorithm and it would hold up under different scenarios which directly reflect what one would see a real-application.

The area of Scheduling is an exciting area of research which has direct application in many aspects of Computer Science. Multicriteria Scheduling: Theory, Models and Algorithms covers the topic of scheduling and more specifically the applications of optimization problems in scheduling very well. The authors guide the reader thru numerous algorithms much of which is used everyday is various applications.

A man of extraordinary inner strength and patriotic devotion, General Harold K. Johnson was a soldier's officer, loved by his men and admired by his peers for his leadership, courage, and moral convictions. Lewis Sorley's biography provides a fitting testament to this remarkable man, who rose from obscurity to become LBJ's Army Chief of Staff during the Vietnam War.

A native of North Dakota, Johnson survived more than three grueling years as a POW under the Japanese during World War II before serving brilliantly as a field commander in the Korean War, for which he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for "extraordinary heroism." These experiences led to a series of high-level positions culminating in his appointment as Army chief in 1964 and were the subject of a cover story in Time magazine.

What followed should have been the most rewarding period of Johnson's military career. Instead, it proved to be a nightmare, as he quickly became mired in the politics and ordeal of a very misguided war.

Johnson fundamentally disagreed with the three men running our war in Vietnam: LBJ, Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara, and General William Westmoreland. He was sharply critical of LBJ's piecemeal policy of gradual escalation and failure to mobilize the national will or call up the reserves. He was equally despondent over Westmoreland's now infamous search-and-destroy tactics and reliance on body counts to measure success in Vietnam.

By contrast, Johnson advocated greater emphasis on cutting the North's supply lines, helping the South Vietnamese provide for their own internal defenses, and sustaining a legitimate government in the South. Unheeded, he nevertheless continued to work behind the scenes to correct the flawed approach of the United States to the war.

Sorley's study adds immeasurably to our understanding of the Vietnam War. It also provides an inspiring account of principled leadership at a time when the American military is seeking to recover the kind of moral values exemplified by Harold K. Johnson. As such, it presents a profound morality tale for our own era.

Duty and Honor on behalf of Country.......2006-10-24

Harold K. Johnson was a soldier's soldier who had the misfortune to have his career bookended by a pair of tragedies. As a young officer at the beginning of World War II, he was captured by the Japanese on Bataan and his sense of duty forced him to abandon thoughts of escape in order to look after his men. Then, as Chief of Staff of the Army, he was forced to watch the civilian leadership ignore his advice and make a hash of a winnable war. Again, his sense of duty to his men forced him to swallow his anger and abandon plans of resigning and going public with his criticisms.

Lest one think that something other than duty led him to these painful decisions, the core of his career reveals a brilliant, courageous soldier for whom duty was his watchword. Sorley writes with objectivity and sensitivity about Johnson's career and this book becomes a virtual primer on duty. Selflessness marked all of Johnson's actions and while one would have preferred seeing a happier conclusion to the career of this fine man, Honorable Warrior shows you why the best people in America are sometimes forced to live with the consequences of someone else's muddled decisions.

Sorley's book succeeds as top notch military history, a thoughtful biography of a good man and a philosophical meditation on the nature of duty.

Bob Sorley has hit another home run.......1999-03-03

Sorley had become the preeminent biographer of military leaders. His first book, Thunderbolt, was a joy to read. Honorable Warrior is the story of man who fought, the Japanese, survived the Battan Death march and many years of unspeakable horror in Japanese prison camps. He also fought with great bravery in Korea. However, I t was his time as Chief of Staff when General Johnson faced his most difficult professional agonies. Anyone interested in leadership, the military or American history should read this book.

The soldier's highest duty is to the truth........1999-02-12

I'm four-fifths done with "Honorable Warrior", and about the same amount done with "A Bright Shining Lie: John Paul Vann and America in Vietnam" by Neil Sheehan, and I'm terribly afraid, in fact, I'm pretty sure (I looked at the ending) that Mr. Sorley will duck the question that his subject could not duck..quite. That question was whether the military effort was going to work. General Johnson was averse to Phoenix-style assassination programs and to unrestrained bombardment. He thought local policing and interdiction of infiltration would answer things. This assumes (on his part) that the South Vietnamese regime would use this breathing space to flourish in democracy, rectitude, and mercy. Why did he assume this? His cherished analytical principle, Mr. Sorley informs us, was "challenge the assertion". For instance, the General tore to shreds, anaylytically, one of McNamara's "Systems Anaylysis" monster-reports on Vietnam by pointing out that it had been cobbled together out of twenty-eight other analyses, each of which had different assumptions. As my history professor would say, "scissors and paste" or "daisy-chaining" does not good history make. My question is whether the General was rigorous enough in evaluating his own thought, his own assertions. The question is directed to Mr. Sorley, who says in his conclusion that the war was actually against mere "surrogates" of China and the Soviet Union. By that logic, we would have been morally authorized to kill every Vietnamese, since they were only inert instruments of the source of the belligerency. Trying to look through Mr. Sorley's somewhat blood-misted eyes, I take seriously his suggestion that the General was often tempted to quit and that he had paralyzing doubts about the war, which he justified to himself as bringing freedom to the people of Vietnam. Did the General end up believing, in the words of the U.S. officer so often quoted, that in order to save the nation of Vietnam it was necessary to destroy it? No, I hear his fans shouting, he was too moral! But was he moral enough to realize that it was immoral to police and interdict a viable political regime (sponsored by Ho) to death in the hope that another regime would spring up from the morally toxic swamps of Saigon? (This concept of viability of regime is the standard upheld by so-called international law in determining which of competing regimes deserves recognition). Could he make that leap of faith in good conscience? Or did he in fact drape his moral doubt in words like "anti-communism" and "security", and leave it to someone else to decide if the whole thing was going to work? My suggestion for a moral lesson is that if you're called on to do something by someone who is farther from the action than you are to the extent that you're confident that you know more about the moral questions raised than your "superior" does, so much so that your sense of obligation to this superior evaporates, you cannot dress up your feeling of emptiness with some slogans, much less with the claim that you're only following orders, but must do something to rectify the malfeasance of your own superiors. In the words of Matthew Ridgeway, words that the Army put on a leadership poster ten years ago, "If you are confident that your orders are mistaken, you are obliged to attempt to fix things." Not his exact words. I don't think he just said to bring it to the attention of your superiors. I suppose that leaves disobedience, resignation, and forceful advocacy. It is the lack of forceful advocacy by the General, and lack of concern by Mr. Sorley over the General's lack of forceful advocacy, that makes the life of the General, as Mr. Sorley tells it, only worth four stars out of five. I mean, you can't just blame everything on General Westmoreland, especially when he worked for General Johnson, traditions of lattitude for field commanders notwithstanding. Alright, how do I know the General wasn't forceful enough since I haven't finished the book? He could have ordered Westmoreland to fix things: whatever, invade Laos, install U.S. commanders in all ARVN units, take over the administration of the South Vietnamese civil population, which is the same as taking over the Saigon regime, whatever it would have taken in his mind to win ("the freedom of the South Vietnamese people", remember) and then suffered the consequences. The President could have fired him. The fact that the President didn't fire him is proof to me that he didn't advocate forcefully enough. That is crude of me. Romantic. Duel at Diablo. End of story. Soul intact. It is so easy in a bureaucracy to adopt the attitude of "garbage in, garbage out", but they pay you and respect you for doing hard things. In the words of the New Testament parable, we are worthless servants when we only do what we are told. If the General had no doubt that his conduct of the war -- he was plumb in the middle of the road of the chain of command, it was on his watch -- was ethical, we cannot second-guess God's judgment of him. To quote the previous reviewer, however, it seems that he thought that his job was to follow orders. That is not ethical. That is, in the final analysis, stupid. We don't creates lines of authority to multiply our stupidity, but to diminish it. If, when you give somebody an order, there is no implicit "or am I being stupid" which they feel free to confirm or deny, you are not getting the best out of that subordinate and the people are not getting its best out of you. This applies the more so, the higher up you go. Hey?

An outstanding story of an outstanding American!.......1998-08-05

I had the honor to know General Harold K. Johnson while he was a Commanding General, and then to serve two years as his personal aide while he was Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army. Sorley has done a magnificient job of research and reporting on the life of the most dedicated American military leader in recent history. General Johnson was a unique man, humbled by his roots, molded by his experience as a POW, and a man whose personal moral standards never waivered. I think the author has portrayed General Johnson as the man I knew. My only difference with the portrayal is the implication of "resignation in protest" on a number of occasions. General Johnson held the view that his function was to advise the President, and that the President had no obligation to accept that advice. I would accept the "resignation" theory only if it portrayed General Johnson as considering resignation because he felt his advice was inadequate or that his articulation ! of that advice was inadequate. The idea of resignation would have been because he felt someone else could perhaps do it better. He was such a private man that I also doubt he would have shared that thought with others, particularly junior to him. But, a really excellent biography and Sorley has done himself proud.

A beautifully written, well-researched and fascinating book.......1998-07-01

General Harold K. Johnson was a figure of such renown and personal integrity that his life literally cried out for a biographer. Now he has one -- and Lewis Sorley has proven up to the task. This is a major work of biography on one of America's finest soldiers. Obviously the result of years of research, Sorley's vivid recounting of Johnson's agonizing years of imprisonment under the Japanese, his heroism in the bloody combat of Korea, and his climb to the top of the Army's command ladder sets the standard for biographical excellence. I have not read a better biography of any military figure since Bruce Catton's treatment of Grant. This is an exceptionally fine book that leaves only one unanswered question: when does Sorley's next work come out?

Tourette's syndrome is a neurological disorder characterized by tics, physical jerks, and random shouts and noises that can include profanity and racial epithets. It's become relatively well known through the writings of neurologist Oliver Sacks (whose bestselling book The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat includes several case studies of Touretters--as he dubbed them), and through the 1995 documentary Twitch and Shout, a film coauthored by Lowell Handler and Laurel Chiten, both of whom have the disorder.

Now Handler has written a book with the same name, an attempt to chronicle the disease from the inside, to explore the strange life and symptoms of a person who has discovered, as he puts it, that "the mind has a mind of its own." He meets with other Touretters, including a professional basketball player, a medical doctor, and, in one of the book's most surreal episodes, an ex-military man who had served in a nuclear missile silo in charge of the launch keys. But while there is much honesty about the emotional impact of the disorder on an individual's life, Handler (who admits that he suffers from lifelong dyslexia) provides a severely fragmented narrative, jumping from episode to episode with little sense of closure or lessons learned. What's more, he's unable to give much insight into how it feels to have the disorder, or how the mind of someone with Tourette's differs from a nonsufferer. BRILLIANT...........2004-11-23

Taken from the perspective of an author who lives with Tourette's Syndrome, Lowell Handler provides one of the most vivid everyday observances to a most uncontrollable disorder. What most people have little grasp on, Handler often uses humility and humor to set examples of how only one living with this handicap can describe.

Tourette's Syndrome is usually spotted early before the age of eighteen, found to impair males more than females (almost three to one). Tourette's creates involuntary movements and tics that usually cannot be controlled by the person. Vocally, inappropriate language and animal sounds is the most common dysfunction towards the disorder's spontaneous combustion.

Twitch & Shout gives an inspirational account of a man that survives triumphantly, documenting the good and the bad as an author, photographer and moviemaker, on top of personal and love interest. People with Tourette's lead normal and healthy lives, but the journey sometimes is not. Feeling comfortable means comprehending the diagnoses. Handler evokes a great deal of self into the findings of this book.

SIDENOTE
Handler filmed a documentary also called Twitch & Shout before the book was published. This can be found at select local libraries on a VHS format. The video shows some different perspectives that the book cannot illustrate. VERY RECOMMENDED.

Excellently Tourettish account of Tourette's.......2004-03-13

Many Touretters will say that Tourette's gives rhythm to not only movement and speech, but thought and life as well. This book, with its energetic, pulsing, and sometimes explosive rhythm, certainly seems to bear that out.

The author, who has Tourette's syndrome himself, describes the way Tourette's interplays with and shapes his life, in an integrated way even when he sees it as an interference. He meets people with varying kinds and degrees of Tourette's, along with Oliver Sacks, a famous neurologist who studies people with Tourette's.

As a person whose tics are too mild for me to really consider them a part of me, I found it interesting to see what life is like with tics that integrate themselves into every part of a person's life. I noticed parallels between the attitudes of some Touretters toward Tourette's and the attitude of many autistic people toward autism, where there's not as much of a line to be drawn between a condition and a person's personality as a purely medical/disease model would make it sound. This book was both interesting and genuinely enjoyable to read.

Facing life head on and winning.......2004-01-20

Twitch and Shout is a fascinating, moving, and informative account of an artistic young man (the author) who confronts his Tourette Syndrome head on, deliberately living at full tilt in defiance of the much misunderstood disorder.

Moments of transcendent prose alternate with hilarious and sometimes sad memoir.

As an artist and advocate of mastery, I appreciated how the author's challenges shaped his journey, bringing him numerous triumphs, as photographer, author, friend and lover. With objectivity and grace, he discovered that Tourette informed part of who he was, and acted almost as a language or culture, at times a heightened state.

I was moved by this perspective, and aspire to its message, that we should not only accept our rough edges, but see them as the parameters of our genius.

A Great Inside Story.......2003-01-21

I was so impressed with the frankness and openess of this book. Handler allows its reader into a world that there are not many doors for those without TS. He helps the reader explore the humor of TS, the complexity of TS and the comradery between Touretters. This book is profoundly honest. It is a must read for those readers interested in Tourette Syndrome.

Not all with TS use it as an excuse..........2002-06-04

I was very disappointed that the author spent so much time using TS as an excuse for his immoral lifestyle. I'd rather not have read about his sex life & drug use.

The book almost seemed to give the impression that all of us who have TS (yes, that means me too) go around living this way.

The book actually did have a few pages that were worth reading so I gave it two stars rather than one.
