With a decided emphasis on cozy country charm, The English Country Cottage explores 25 delightful old cottages that have been updated with all the comforts of modern life and yet manage to retain much of their period flavor. Even the names ring with the unmistakable sound of the quaint English countryside: Smuggler's Haunt, Mustard Pot Hall, Wealden Close, Rose Cottage. Most are relatively traditional, though no less appealing, with lots of plump chintz cushions, botanical prints, nautical themes, pleasantly weathered furnishings, and hutches overflowing with crockery. But a few are refreshingly different, such as the vibrantly hued Cider-House Cottage, where the owner painted fanciful designs all over each room to warm the cold look of the stone walls, or Folly Cottage, with its bright red walls and many Gothic accents. The clear photographs display plenty of good ideas for mimicking the style, but by and large readers must extract these ideas themselves since the text focuses much more on examining these particular cottages (what renovations were needed to make the old structures livable today; descriptions of garden designs or color scheme choices) than on analyzing the key design elements or explaining how to re-create the specific effects. --Amy Handy

This truly delightful book shows cottage interiors that reflect the pasttimes, habits, and way of living that one likes to believe are essentially "English". These homes look as if they are actually lived in and all exhibit that special British propensity for comfort blended with eccentricity. The ubiquitous Aga is featured in a number of the kitchens, but there are also enough 'jolts' in the form of colour use and collections to make this book memorable and somehow fresh. A book I refer to again and again and well worth adding to your collection - almost a reference on English cottage style. Very good value.

Highly recommended........2003-12-23
This is one of my favorite (non-fiction) books of all time. It is not your garden variety decorating book, and doesn't pretend to be. In subject matter it is a bit more about architecture rather than interior decoration, with an emphasis on traditional. I think the text is excellent: witty, charming, down-to-earth, very informative and not long-winded or padded out. The photography is superb, giving excellent and well-lit views. Most of these rooms are decorated with some antiques, and the captions give you some information on these. If you love traditional cottage architecture, and English country decorating on the somewhat modest side -- no fancy houses here, these are cottages -- you might love this book as much as I. Highly recommended.
Misleading title, lackluster book.!.......2003-01-23
I was expecting a book with pictures of english decorating style. This is certainly NOT THAT. It is on the small side, so if you're looking for nice photos, forget it. It just wasn't what the title led one to expect it would be. Dissappointing!

I was looking for a book with a softer approach and lighter colors. This book would be great for someone who loves dark colors, such as greens, browns, reds and plaids, and wants a more primative old fashioned approach. Also some of the pictures were quite small.

I loved this book. I can't tell you how many times I've picked it up and looked through all of the wonderful pictures. If you love the camp and/or cottage style, this book is a must for you.

The book's text and photographs made me wish I could be there (in Oregon). I enjoyed reading the author's growth in the book, what led her to write it. I found the step-by-step projects well detailed and the pictures excellent. Thank you.
A Marriage of Shabby/Cottage & Cowboy/Native American Chic.......2002-10-02
I loved this book. For years I have been collecting Cowboy and Native American items and have gotten tired of the basically "masculine" feel of the rooms. This book incorporated many of these same elements in a shabby chic, cottage chic way. It showed me how to marry all these styles into one visually appealing look. I found my style! I just wish that there had been more written substance to the book. It took me all of 45 minutes to digest both the written dialogue and the pictures. However, I did especially find moving the dedication to Popeye, the resident cat. Gotta love an animal lover!
Review of Camps and Cottages.......2001-09-09
Camps and Cottages has some nice photographs of interior home furnishings. What I didn't like about the book are several things. The pictures are repeated throughout the book. For the price of this book I want to see original pictures on each page. The use of small pictures, about 1" square is really difficult for the eye to see. Printing text over textured, colored pages is extremely difficult to read. Descriptions are given of various rooms with no pictures to match, causing the reader confusion. Some photographs are cut off, even though the description includes items not seen. Some of the photographs are out of focus.

Vintage Cottages for Dog Lovers.......2007-08-31
We love this book. So many excellent ideas. Our family being animal people, absolutely love that this book is dedicated to Buddy who happened to be at the right place at the right time. The cottages are beautiful as well as the landscapes and the celebration of four-legged friends is a beautiful plus!
This is an item we accidentally happened upon due to recommendation from previous purchases. We will certainly integrate some of the ideas in our tiny cottage as well with much enthusiasm. Very nice reading indeed and beautiful photography. It sits with pride on our coffee table for when the need for inspiration hits.

Integrating computer graphics and computer-based exercises with the text, An Introduction to Unconstrained Optimisation illustrates key methods with many examples and exercises using the computer. The book takes an elementary approach to this advanced topic, allowing readers to concentrate on learning and understanding the concepts of numerical optimization without unnecessary involvement in the intricacies of the subject. In addition, the modular approach of the software provides the opportunity to explore the algorithms used and to develop them further or try alternative approaches. Most of the algorithms are based upon a "hill-climbing" concept which, in two dimensions, is illustrated dynamically on the computer screen in the form of contour plots and search directions. The text is not specific to any particular microcomputer. Software is available for the BBC series of machines (40/80 track disc formats) and PC-compatible machines. The software is not available from your local bookstore, but is easily obtainable using the order form in the book. Keeping proofs and lists of methods to a minimum, the book is at a level suitable for a first course in numerical analysis, with a basic knowledge of calculus and vector algebra assumed. This book/software package will be of interest to professionals, teachers, and undergraduate students in mathematics, operational research, science, and engineering as well as economics and management courses that deal with quantitative methods.

Who is the intended reader?.......2007-04-05
I would have given fewer stars if I thought the book had been written for people like myself.
Anyone writing for instruction has a real challenge: different readers bring different backgrounds, and an explanation that would be essential for one reader is an irritating waste of time for another. It did not seem to me that this author met the challenge well. I found unfamiliar technical terms abounded, and when I figured out what a section was saying in plain English, the result was self-evident.
I remember the wonderful scene in Out of the Silent Planet (Space Trilogy, Book One) where the hero translates the villain's speeches to the god-judge. I felt a little like that reading this book.
I suspect that the overall purpose of this book was exactly the opposite of that expressed as an afterword in The Feynman Lectures on Physics: Commemorative Issue, Three Volume Set. This book was intended to help students pass an exam without having to learn anything they would ever use or remember.
For that purpose it may be useful, so I felt I should not give it too few stars.

Game theory, defined in the broadest sense, is a collection of mathematical models designed for the analysis of strategic aspects of situations of conflict and cooperation in a broad spectrum of fields including economics, politics, biology, engineering, and operations research. This book, besides covering the classical results of game theory, places special emphasis on methods of determining `solutions' of various game models. Generalizations reaching beyond the `convexity paradigm' and leading to nonconvex optimization problems are enhanced and discussed in more detail than in standard texts on this subject. The development is theoretical-mathematical interspersed with elucidating interpretations and examples.
Audience: The material in the book is accessible to PhD and graduate students and will also be of interest to researchers. Solid knowledge of standard undergraduate mathematics is required to read the book.
