      Book Description

The Handbook of Thin Film Process Technology is a practical handbook for the thin film scientist, engineer and technician. The main work is regularly updated with new material, and this volume is a special issue on substrate cleaning which will be of interest to industrial and academic researchers in the semiconductor and optics industry in addition to owners of the main Handbook. This supplement includes recipes which give precise instructions for the cleaning of specific substrates, for specific film depositions, or using specific techniques. In addition, general articles evaluate the cleaning procedure, covering the usual contaminants, handling and storage of substrates, chemicals (for instance the importance of the pH of solution, particle deposition), DI quality (level of contamination, water drops), what is removed, drying (e.g. the Marangoni effect), and the surface of the substrate before deposition (composition, morphology, hydrophilic, hydrophobic).

                      Book Description

The mathematics employed by genetic algorithms (GAs)are among the most exciting discoveries of the last few decades. But what exactly is a genetic algorithm? A genetic algorithm is a problem-solving method that uses genetics as its model of problem solving. It applies the rules of reproduction, gene crossover, and mutation to pseudo-organisms so those "organisms" can pass beneficial and survival-enhancing traits to new generations. GAs are useful in the selection of parameters to optimize a system's performance. A second potential use lies in testing and fitting quantitative models. Unlike any other book available, this interesting new text/reference takes you from the construction of a simple GA to advanced implementations. As you come to understand GAs and their processes, you will begin to understand the power of the genetic-based problem-solving paradigms that lie behind them. The Practical Handbook of Genetic Algorithms presents for the first time new areas of research and implementation. Problems that for many have been considered intractable are shown to be solvable using the techniques described in this work. Specific solution descriptions to real-world problems are provided, or use these as examples to develop solutions to unique problems. Volume II picks up where the first book leaves off and presents the topic from more of an applications point of view. The focus of the book is to show the reader how to develop their own genetic algorithm coding schemes and how and when to employ the GA to solve problems.

A good book if you are looking for some applications of GAs and different points of view on how implementing a GA. Some examples include: a Parallel GA, a timetable solution, a finite state machine implementation and much more. But it doesn't goes deep in implementation details. Not recommended for real beginners

                          Book Description

While most scholars agree that Robert E. Lee's loyalty to Virginia was the key factor in his decision to join the Confederate cause, Richard B. McCaslin demonstrate that, beyond that loyalty, Lee's true call to action was the legacy of the American Revolution viewed through his reverence for George Washington. In this thematic biography of the commander of the Army of Northern Virginia, McCaslin locates the sources of Lee's devotion to Washington and shows how this bond affected his performance as a general in battle.

                                Book Description

We think we’re relating to other people–but actually we’re all playing games.

Forty years ago, Games People Play revolutionized our understanding of what really goes on during our most basic social interactions. More than five million copies later, Dr. Eric Berne’s classic is as astonishing–and revealing–as it was on the day it was first published. This anniversary edition features a new introduction by Dr. James R. Allen, president of the International Transactional Analysis Association, and Kurt Vonnegut’s brilliant Life magazine review from 1965.
We play games all the time–sexual games, marital games, power games with our bosses, and competitive games with our friends. Detailing status contests like “Martini” (I know a better way), to lethal couples combat like “If It Weren’t For You” and “Uproar,” to flirtation favorites like “The Stocking Game” and “Let’s You and Him Fight,” Dr. Berne exposes the secret ploys and unconscious maneuvers that rule our intimate lives.
Explosive when it first appeared, Games People Play is now widely recognized as the most original and influential popular psychology book of our time. It’s as powerful and eye-opening as ever.

It was the biggest waste of $15.00 ever.

As sensational as it was when it first appeared, Games People Play is as relevant today as it was when published. With its magical blurb declaring 'We think we're relating to other people-but actually we're all playing games', this is one book that you will find difficult to forget.

5 out of 5 stars What Games Are You Playing?.......2007-06-27

Wonderful book! Ever wonder why people do the things they do? Why they say certain things and act a certain way? This book will explain exactly what that is all about. A bit technical in the beginning, but than starts you off on your journey of enlightenment. After reading this book you'll start realizing what a jerk you're being to certain people, and what a brown-noser you are to others. In the end, this'll help with your everyday situations with peers and subordinates as you get a clear and thorough understanding on "the games people play".

5 out of 5 stars An effort at comprehensible, useful psychology.......2007-05-14

In "Games People Play", Eric Berne:

                                1) Had moved away from his original psychoanalytic background (having studied with Erik Erikson) and by this time originated transational analysis, which he presents for lay people with this book.

                                2) Focuses on three "ego states", Parent, Adult, and Child. Each of these ego states is appropriate in certain situations (e.g Parent when teaching a child, Child often for creativity).

                                3) Presents people as having being driven by stimulus hunger (e.g. the need for strokes, which is shaped into recognition hunger as one gets older.

                                4) Defines games as one way of satisfying our hungers through social interactions. Other ways include procedures, rituals, and pastimes, all of which are honest ways to relate. Games, however, "a series of complementary ulterior transactions progressing to a well-defined, predictable outcome" are basically dishonest, with motivations being concealed.

                                5) Games may involve 2 players of more. Each step in a game (and hence the e entire set of transactions comprising the game) can be diagrammed by showing which ego states are involved for each player at each step. More than ego state can be involved in a step. Transactions can be complementary (e.g. Adult-Adult), crossed (e.g. Adult-Child directed from one person and Parent-Child directed from the other), or ulterior (e.g. two interactions at one such as Adult-Adult at the social level and Child-Child at the psychological level). Each player may shift ego states at any time. So, given the combinations of ego states, the possible multiple interactions at any one step, and the possibility of multiple steps, a game can become quite complex. Berne presents quite a few games, which he gives simple names to (avoiding psychiatric jargon) and categorizes, e.g. Life Games, Marital Games, and Underworld Games.

                                6) Berne presents a desired goal beyond games for the individual of autonomy: awareness, spontaneity, and intimacy. It sounds surpisingly like the Tibetan Buddhist teaching Dzogchen.

Major contributions by Berne seem to be the move to simple terms and one simple model and using it to show many examples of how dishonest interaction occurs and can be destructive (but not necessarily, there is room for constructive playfulness). That he was able himself to free himself from all the psychoanalytic teachings he had learned and find and share a simple way of understanding our interactions is no small achievement: "Games People Play" is valuable if only because it models simplicity. As a lay person, I find that helpful.

                                4 out of 5 stars Ground-breaking. .......2007-03-26

One must remember when reading Dr. Berne's book on the games we play that it was written over 40 years ago which makes it a far more ground-breaking work than one may suppose. It's brief but exudes many timeless truths about the nature of human beings. It's important for me to note for potential readers that his transactional psychological viewpoint does not derive from the separate mathematical field of game theory. That's a completely different discipline. The titles he uses for the games we play were inventive as was his choice of using acronyms to describe them. One example is IWFY for "If it Weren't for You." Dr. Berne's work is an intriguing starting or middle point for those people interested in the way we relate to one another.

This masterpiece, from the writer of "Games People Play" as well as several other books dealing with the subject of interpersonal relationships, is excellent in its presentation and scope. The late author, Dr. Eric Berne, guides the reader through a clear understanding of how we inter-relate with others, as well as ourselves. His depth of understanding of the "human condition", presented with eloquent wit and charm, make this a volume that is difficult to put down. Dr. Berne's approach and skills at explanation make this a must read for anyone interested in this area of psychology. While the book could very well be used as a college text, the language is straight-forward and clear for professional or layman, alike.

Simply one of the best psychology books I have ever read. It's fascinating. I loved his interpretation of the story Cinderella. I will never be able to think of the fairy godmother as as a good-natured woman again!

This is the best book that I have ever read on the subject of pschotherapy. It shows how `parental influence' becomes your conscience and determines your destiny and ultimately what is written on the epitaph of your tomb. The illusion that a human being is a free, autonomous creature is shattered. One need not find this distressing as there is hope.To find out more read it, go through it again, unwind the tape on which the holes have been punched to make your program (Life script) and possibly try to reprogram yourself! Not a easy task, mind you.

5 out of 5 stars A great book by Eric Berne.......1999-02-04

"What do you say after you say hello"- is a great book that introduces theries about scripts, and how we can live our lives to the very fullest. There are many intersting refrences to well-known Fairy Tales, that illustrate the authors point. This is a great book to read for anyone who is intrested in knowing more about themselves.

I've referred hundreds of people to Eric Berne's classic over the decades since I first read it in 1968. In the age of narcissism and entitlement we're currently immersed in, this is the book that can give you perspective on all the dysfunctional relationships in your life, whether they are important (parents, children, spouse) or minor externalities (a lousy day waiting on customers).

If you sometimes think about your life and say to yourself "I just don't get why people treat me that way" or "I wish I knkew how to handle people like that," read this seminal book.

5 out of 5 stars a great book but about more than sex .......2005-08-29

The title is misleading. This book is about much more than just sex. A good explanation of Berne's teaching, easier to follow than the complex `Games People Play.' I wish I had taken the lessons of this book on board when I first read it at 18. The moral of the book: most of us have unhappy scripts handed to us by our parents which make our lives unfulfilled, sometimes tragically unhappy, but those scripts can be rewritten with determination and insight. The humour is a bit too cutesy but the book deserves a 5 for sure.

5 out of 5 stars Explains what intimacy is about and why we do't get it........1999-05-18

This is not about the sexual positions of sex but about intimacy in the context of sex.It tells you why you are after it and how most of the time you have been or got programmed in Life to not get it. One is also better off reading his other books before getting this one i.e. `Games People Play' and `What do you say after you say hello'.

5 out of 5 stars Great book about relationships and getting better ones!.......1998-11-08

Anyone who is unhappy with the relationships they have, sexual or not, can benefit a LOT from this book. It's funny, witty, and thought provoking. Not just about sex, but about *you*, and why you don't have the relationships you want.

The book jacket description is as follows - "the HAPPY VALLEY is a story for young people, written by Dr. Eric Berne, author of GAMES PEOPLE PLAY. The characters in the story include a mixed-up python, an obedient rabbit, a wise little man, a friendly sheep, a dutiful princess, an explorer, a billy goat, a kind prince, and three robbers. Even though there are thieves there and someone wants to eat somebody else and someone needs someone else's skin, the valley is a place where everyone is polite and happy and does what he likes best and, most important of all, still manages to satisfy his own conscience." While this is the first "unpsychiatric" book that Dr. Berne has written after several works complementary to GAMES PEOPLE PLAY, "he says he too would like to be polite and happy and satisfy his conscience and still do what he likes best".

I was alerted to the existence of this wonderful exposition regarding the possibilities for finding ingenious solutions to the dilemmas which we frequently confront by an essay entitled THE LONELIEST BOOK I EVER READ in a collection entitled REMARKABLE READS (edited by J. Peder Zane - review 4/7/04). HAPPY VALLEY was published in 1968, after Dr. Berne became a well recognized writer on the subject of the complexity and ambiguity of interpersonal relationships; in fact his title became a common household phrase. This book tells the story of Shardlu, a python who "was not very handsome to look at, and not very clever. In fact, he was a little mixed up. The only way he could earn a living was by being kind to people on Tuesday night and Friday morning. He was listed on the payroll as Friend & Companion." One day while taking a nap on a hilltop, he became frightened by a dream and as was his wont, he rolled up into a ball and thus rolled down the hill and ended in a strange place identified by a sign as the valley of Lamador. The sign announced that "everyone will see something different here. You will see one thing and your father and mother and dog will see something else... But the main thing you will see is what happens next." The story is about wordplay (one of the robbers is named Tobedwego), and surprises, and relationships and the insights gained from seeing things "backwards and inside out".

So this is for young people who can be amused by fantasy, but also for adults who recognize the complex truth so often wonderfully illustrated by seeming simple children's stories. The description in the essay which I read captured the essence of it impact with the phrase "thrilling weird". In addition, the illustrations by Sylvie Selig add immeasurably to the feeling of weirdness and wonder engendered by the book; they are intensely colorful, slightly whimsical and range from being exact representations of the storyline to almost background illustrations conveying a generic impression of the ambiance of HAPPY VALLEY and its inhabitants. (Several of the animals portrayed are never mentioned in the text.)

While I would not claim that this book rises to the status of a somehow overlooked children's classic, I was certainly glad that my reading alerted me to the enjoyment to be discovered between its covers. Furthermore, it reminded me of how much pleasure we forgo (and how many potential insights our children lose) if our lives are too busy to occasionally take time to simply peruse a random selection of the available children's literature. After all, I would guess that few writers provide so much insight and pleasure relative to the time necessary to read their work as the best authors of children's and young people's books; Maurice Sendak and Shel Silverstein will always remain two of my favorite author/illustrators. So, I was extremely glad that I found this book, and that Jonathan Lethem (the essay writer) chose to share his love of it with other readers, despite the fact that he may well have destroyed its status as the "secret garden" to which seemingly he alone had the key.
