They are of increasing importance with respect to environmental protection, safety and energy technology. Some of the general requirements of cell design are: simple modular design applicable to high current densities, large specific electrode area, low ohmic losses, applicable to multiphase systems, reliable operation with low maintenance, and easy to scale-up. Based on the results of over 10 years of research and development by the authors, this book presents a broad cross section of dynamic programming (DP) techniques applied to the optimization of dynamical systems. The main goal of the research effort was to develop a robust path planning/trajectory optimization tool that did not require an initial guess. The goal was partially met with a combination of DP and homotopy algorithms. DP algorithms are presented here with a theoretical development, and their successful application to variety of practical engineering problems is emphasized. Applied Dynamic Programming for Optimization of Dynamical Systems presents applications of DP algorithms that are easily adapted to the readers own interests and problems. The book is organized in such a way that it is possible for readers to use DP algorithms before thoroughly comprehending the full theoretical development. A general architecture is introduced for DP algorithms emphasizing the solution to nonlinear problems. DP algorithm development is introduced gradually with illustrative examples that surround linear systems applications. Many examples and explicit design steps applied to case studies illustrate the ideas and principles behind DP algorithms. DP algorithms potentially address a wide class of applications composed of many different physical systems described by dynamical equations of motion that require optimized trajectories for effective maneuverability. The DP algorithms determine control inputs and corresponding state histories of dynamic systems for a specified time while minimizing a performance index. Constraints may be applied to the final states of the dynamic system or to the states and control inputs during the transient portion of the maneuver. There are two major parts of a successful optimal control solution technique. The first part is the optimization method. The second part is the differential equation method. Betts's goal is to suggest that methods used to solve differential equations and optimize the functions are intimately related.

Many books on optimal control are not practical, because to solve real problems we often need to apply numerical methods.
So that the subject of the book is extremely important.
However, the organization of this book is a complete mess. It mixes some pieces of optimization topics, written in a generic manner that are not sufficient to implement any algorithm. You need to know the topics from another book. Then the book isnt so practical as the author says.

Linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) have recently emerged as useful tools for solving a number of control problems. This book provides an up-to-date account of the LMI method and covers topics such as recent LMI algorithms, analysis and synthesis issues, nonconvex problems, and applications. It also emphasizes applications of the method to areas other than control. The basic idea of the LMI method in control is to approximate a given control problem via an optimization problem with linear objective and so-called LMI constraints. The LMI method leads to an efficient numerical solution and is particularly suited to problems with uncertain data and multiple (possibly conflicting) specifications.

I rated 3 stars mainly because the book, contrarily to the advertising, isn't for engineers, it is for mathematicians. Is written with a very sophisticated mathematics, where simple things become complicated. If you're an engineer you might not be able to read it, or even if you're are able to, you probably won't be interested in theorems and proofs. Sorry, but I was really disappointed with the book, simply isn't what I expected - a book with fundamentals but in an accessible language.

LOOKING AT ALZHEIMER'S AS A CAREGIVER.......2002-06-25

"Old Timers" should be on the suggested reading list for anyone seeking information about Alzheimer's disease and all of its ramifications for the family of the victim. NO ONE knows like someone who had been there and that is certainly Jack Turley. It is an easy read that pulls at the heart strings.

A Shared Journey.......2002-06-14

I received a copy of Mr. Turley's book from my cousin. It was sent to me since my mother is on her journey into dementia. Even though she has not been diagnosed with Alzheimer's, many of her symptoms are similar. At the time I read Mr. Turley's book, I was feeling very isolated, confused and frustrated. I did not need a factual rendition of what I was facing. I needed a personal connection. After reading Mr. Turley's book, I no longer felt as if I was the only person dealing with the overwhelming emotions associated with watching a loved one sink into dementia. My feelings of guilt were greatly alleviated, just by sharing what Mr. Turley had gone through. I found many of the decisions he had to make were similar to ones I was in the process of having to make. I also appreciated having a book that was honest, straightforward and did not hedge on the turmoil involved with the caregiver. What I appreciated most, was his underlying theme that his life continued but with the added burdens. That is the most important message one can send. Those of us that have to stand and watch still have to continue with what we do. We cannot become consumed with our loved ones decline. That is also the hardest aspect of dementia with which to deal.

YES! He REALLY understands!.......2002-06-14

OLD TIMERS is a compelling story, brutally honest, written with occasional humor and dedicated love. I found I consistently nodded my head in agreement and thought, "YES! He REALLY understands!" I sent OLD TIMERS to my cousin. She is going through absolute misery with her mother who lives in a different state and has Alzheimer's Disease. My cousin was depressed and didn't want to read the book. Having just returned from a visit, she was VERY tired and "had ENOUGH of the subject." But, she DID read it and called to say that OLD TIMERS helped her so very much. She found out that others had problems and feelings similar to hers. Now my cousin does not feel so alone when she is dealing with difficult decisions and tender feelings. I highly recommend OLD TIMERS for church and community support discussion groups.

Mr. Turley's superlative accounting of his mother's "One way journey into darkness" has struck a nerve. For I too watched as my own father left us as the result of this dreaded disease called Alzheimer's. Excellent informative reading.

Straight Forward-How It Is Approach To Alzheimer's.......2002-04-05

Jack Turley shared journey through heart felt intimate moments answered many questions and lessons in approaching the position of being a careprovider to a family member with alzheimer's. The sharing of his beloved mother suffering through many challenging issues and choices was extremely impactful to me being a careprovider for my parents and a psychoanalytic-dynamic psycotherapist in Los Angeles. I have recommended this book to my friends and clients and have received nothing but outstanding comments and a Warm-Thank You. This book contributions tremendously to the humanistic understanding of Alzheimer.
