Congestion control algorithms were implemented for the Internet nearly two decades ago, but mathematical models of congestion control in such a large-scale are relatively new. This text presents models for the development of new protocols that can help make Internet data transfers virtually loss- and delay-free. Introduced are tools from optimization, control theory, and stochastic processes integral to the study of congestion control algorithms.

* A presentation of Kelly's convex program formulation of resource allocation on the Internet;
* A solution to the resource allocation problem which can be implemented in a decentralized manner, both in the form of congestion control algorithms by end users and as congestion indication mechanisms by the routers of the network;

94 pages about the war time experiences of Robert Sheats, as a younger diver in the United States Navy, and eventually known as "the Master of the Master Divers". The diving adventures recorded here are not the typical vessel salvage or daring underwater raid that predominates military diving history of the period. The group of military divers that Robert was a part of were a small, unknown and unrecorded unit, diving under extreme conditions with minimal equipment and no pay. They were, however, all divers of the same unique rank, Prisoner of War, and their unit motto could easily be "Dive or Die."

Bob was an exceptional person. I had heard numerous tales about him before I met him.I was fortunate to meet him in person during the Fifties during some advanced training at the Diving School in Wash DC, that he and I were class mates at the time. He was very reluctant to talk about his experiences as a POW. It seemed only after we had some Cocktails, He would open up. The most Interesting persons I have ever Known.A gerat friend

I may be somewhat prejudiced,since my father. Pete Protz, was one of the two others who were Bob Sheats' survival companions, but I found this account fascinating. As a Vietnam veteran, I found this story beyond anything I had ever experienced. Not knowing if or when you would be liberated, especially when you are hungry and sick and see others dying all around you, is beyond my comprehension. Read this account and begin to understand what our fathers and grandfathers had to endure to give you the freedoms you now enjoy. Everything my father told me about being a prisoner of war is verified by Bob Sheats' account. Buy this book!

The range of emotion you feel as a reader has its highs and lows to such an extent that one can not put it down until it is finished. The real things in war are not always felt by those who never went to war, but in this book you feel what war is all about, including all of its flaws.
well written quick paced no bull account of the US Military.......1999-07-27
The Emperors Angry Guest was an excellent book and I would recommend it. Mr.Knox narrated his story well. The book was carefully documented. A very good example of the US government's propensity in not paying close attention what is really, truly going on with their own sons lives. These kids were 18-20 years old. The Battan Death March was real and so were the men who were forced at gunpoint to participate in it. A very good historical account...
