      Book Description

This book is a collection of 34 papers presented by leading researchers at the International Workshop on Robust Control held in San Antonio, Texas in March 1991. The common theme tying these papers together is the analysis, synthesis, and design of control systems subject to various uncertainties. The papers describe the latest results in parametric understanding, H8 uncertainty, l1 optical control, and Quantitative Feedback Theory (QFT). The book is the first to bring together all the diverse points of view addressing the robust control problem and should strongly influence development in the robust control field for years to come. For this reason, control theorists, engineers, and applied mathematicians should consider it a crucial acquisition for their libraries.

          Book Description

The optimal estimation problems for linear dynamic systems, and in particular for systems with aftereffect, reduce to different variational problems. The type and complexity of these variational problems depend on the process model, the model of uncertainties, and the estimation performance criterion. A solution of a variational problem determines an optimal estimator. In addition, frequently the optimal algorithm for one noise model must operate under another, more complex assumption about noise. Hence, simplified algorithms must be used. It is important to evaluate the level of nonoptimality for the simplified algorithms. Since the original variational problems can be very difficult, the estimate of nonoptimality must be obtained without solving the original variational problem. In this book, guaranteed levels of nonoptimality for simplified estimation and control algorithms are constructed. To obtain these levels the duality theory for convex extremal problems is used. Audience: This book will be of interest to applied mathematicians, researchers and engineers who deal with estimation and control systems. The material, which requires a good knowledge of calculus, is also suitable for a two-semester graduate or postgraduate course.

                Book Description

Shedding new light on post-Vietnam War American society, this revised edition of a personal journal first published in 1971 chronicles a soldier's seven weeks of basic training during the 1960s. Wry humor, deadpan delivery, and ironic insight reflect both the shattered innocence and conflicted patriotism of a generation and the definitive tone that has come to represent the 1960s in contemporary culture. Journalistic detail and narrative development of each week's events challenge traditional patriotic images and speak to the current debates of political and military authoritarianism.

5 out of 5 stars Nam era Basic in the nut-shell.......2007-03-01

I recall buying this book at the Chicago train station as I waited to head for O'Hare Arport with my group from the AFES. That was the first week of June in 1972. This must have just recntly come out in PB format at the time. It was kind of scary to read this thing as I traveled to Ft. Polk La. for Basic and AIT. I thought "What the hell did I do to myself." The book rings true for that eras Basic Combat Training and I would recommend it to anyone. After loaning it out to several barracks buddies the Drill Sgt. at last got a hold of it. Never saw it again. But I did replace it now with a new edition from AMAZON after all these years. FTA!

5 out of 5 stars My story, too........2004-03-31

I can hardly say how upset I was when I heard that Peter Tauber died the other day. As many other reviewers have said, he was me, in a lot of ways. We are about the same age, though he graduated from college two years before I did. He went to Basic right after college, as I did. My Basic was at Ft. Jackson, SC, and my culture shock probably starteed when I learned that the Jackson in question was not Ol' Andy, but Stonewall.
I, too, found myself on the other side of the looking glass. Here, I was, a recent graduate of Univ. of Wisconsin, taking orders form people of questionable literacy. I, too, considered keeping a journal, but was too terrorized by "them," not to mention too tired, to follow through.
If I can mention a subject no other reviewer has, to my knowledge, I found that the Jewish Chapel was an important haven for me as well. Not only was the food important, but the chance to be away from the company area from Friday night to Saturday night or even Sunday morning was my salvation.
Mr. Tauber's ventures through the literal and figurative mine fields of Basic were a lot like my own. We too, had sadistic DI's, buddies who escaped all work (one man dislocated his shoulder in week 1 and wound up guarding rifles and t-shirts for the rest of the time), and our own Norman Peyser-type, though our Baby Huey was neither from New York nor a Jew.

5 out of 5 stars THE book about Basic Training in the 60's.......2003-08-23

                Dear Mr. Tauber,

I would like to take moment of your time to tell about what you did for many US soldiers in the early 70's.

I was an art student in an eastern university in the late 60's and was convinced that despite the then-raging Vietnam war, things would be back to normal by the time I graduated in 1971, and that there was nothing to worry about. Even when the Draft Lottery was conducted (the only Lottery I ever won, with the number 11) I wasn't concerned.

Things changed in 1971 when I received my "Pre-Induction Physical" notice in April. By July, I had made my own personal deal with it all by "volunteering" for three years, that extra year allowing me to select an MOS only used in Europe. It seemed the best I could do under the circumstances.

I endured Basic Training in Ft. Campbell, Kentucky, and AIT at Ft Sill Oklahoma, and then after an all-too-brief leave, reported to the Overseas Replacement Station at Ft. Dix New Jersey. I ended up spending a week there, and it was there that I ran across "The Sunshine Soldiers" in the PX. A quick look inside the book quickly convinced me to buy it, and I took it back to the barracks and spent the evening doubled up with laughter. Other soldiers, wanting to know what was so funny, quickly bought out all the remaining copies after they heard a reading of a couple of passages from the book.

Having just completed BCT a couple of months before, it was easy to see your journal played out in the environment that was seared into my memory. Even the characters resonated: the drill sergeants were the same, the Company Commander was the same, and we even had our own version of Norman Peyser!

I took my copy of the book to Germany, but lost it after a couple of months of lending it to people, all of whom enjoyed it tremendously. A few months before I finished my 2 ½ year tour, I was handed a ragged copy of a paperback book along with the comment "Here, you should read this, it's really funny", and lo and behold I had been handed my own well-worn copy of "The Sunshine Soldiers"! Apparently it had been passed from hand-to-hand, from soldier to soldier, for over two years, never landing anyplace long enough to disappear into a bookshelf. They all thought it funny and perceptive enough to recommend it to friends, and it continued on its' journey back to me.

I still have my ragged copy, now with covers laminated and the story of its' journey written inside the front cover.

You created a real treasure, and brightened many soldiers' lives, including mine, during a very tough time in our lives!

Thank very much from all of us for putting pen to paper while you were at Ft Bliss!

4 out of 5 stars the army's "got some 'splainin' to do".......2003-08-15

I thought this was an entertaining book, but I think I'd have enjoyed it more if I could have better placed it in context. By this, I mean that I didn't understand whether the type of Keystone Cops training that this group of reservists and what not received was the same as that given to more "regular" soldiers. If so, as Ricky might say to Lucy, the army's "got some 'splainin' to do." Troop levels in Vietnam were still high when this took place and it's hard to imagine putting people at risk with this kind of incompetent training.

Having said that, the book is pretty funny if you overlook the pathetic training regimen. The author and several of his cohorts seemed to have a great time thumbing their noses at the discipline. I find it hard to imagine the army letting them get away with what the author says they did. But, if they did as he wrote they did, the army needs to answer Ricky's question. The rest of us are free to just enjoy the humor.

5 out of 5 stars Basic Training: A Horrific Waste of a Superior Man's Time.......2002-11-07

It was a terrible crime for this author ever to be forced to endure the Army's basic training. He was obviously so much more intelligent than everyone else in the group -- and stunningly moreso than any of the Army instructors he encountered -- that it was detrimental to the world for him to be removed from civilian life for any period of time and subjected to this nonsensical military slavery. His book thoroughly illuminates the inferiority so rampant in the armed forces, his musical prose sparing no one the castigation warranted in the circumstances. This was an excellent "revenge" book, even better than "Mommy Dearest," exposing the scrofulous stupidity of our soldier class in the context of torturous inconvenience endured bravely by the author -- a thoroughly superior being who definitely should never have been required to wear any variety of United States Armed Forces uniform.

                    Book Description

In the first book-length treatment of the German prisoner of war experience in Florida during World War II, Robert D. Billinger, Jr., tells the story of the 10,000 men who were "guests" of Uncle Sam in a tropical paradise that for some became a tropical hell. Having been captured while serving on U-boats off the Carolinas, with the Afrika Korps in Tunisia, with the paratroops in Italy, or with labor battalions in France, the POWs were among the 378,000 Germans held as prisoners in 45 states. Except for the servicemen who guarded them, the civilian pulp-cutters, citrus growers, and sugarcane foremen who worked them, and the FBI and local police who tracked the escapees among them, most people were--and still are--unaware of the German POWs who inhabited the 27 camps that dotted the Sunshine State. Billinger describes the experiences of the Germans and their captors as both sides came to the realization that, while the Germans' worst enemies were often their own comrades-in-arms, wartime enemies might also become life-long friends. Concentrating especially on the story of Camp Blanding in North Florida, Billinger based his research on both American and German archives. His account mixes rare photos with interviews with former prisoners; reports by the International Red Cross, the YMCA, and the U.S. military; and local newspaper articles.

5 out of 5 stars The Hidden World War II Your Parents Did Not Tell You About!.......2004-08-24

I admit I'm a fan of this type of book...state university press, obscure topic...but when it comes to WWII POWs in the U.S., it is even more fascinating, because not only are the truths stranger than fiction...your parents and grandparents probably remember some of this.

German POWs were held in virtually every state, mixed with civilians, were treated generally better than any kind of prisoner or "minority", and were among us. Some took their memories back to Germany, and some became U.S. citizens. Perhaps nowhere is the story more interesting of compelling than in Florida, where there remain many "denazified" and "nondenazified" Germans.

The conditions they lived in were horrendous. Yet, Florida remains a popular destination of Germans on vacation or "Urlaub". How many are visiting places their parents and grandparents told them about?

The documentation and book do focus on one particular camp, Camp Blanding, where prototypical problems amongst Nazis from different countries, regions, and classes of origin found themselves frequently mixed (reminiscent of Katzenbach's "Hart's War") where black fliers from Tuskegee were imprisoned in a Luftwaffe POW camp.

If you want a primer on the problems presented by housing foreign POWs in a host country, with concomitant social, political, economic, and ecological ramifications, this is a great book to start with!

4 out of 5 stars For History Buffs Only.......2000-09-28

With a love of history in general and World War II history in particular I got a great deal out of this book. This book essentially tells the story of German POWs in Florida from 1942 to their repatriation in 1946. Mr. Billinger goes into a great deal of detail explaining the POW camp hierarchy (Main camps and their branches) and the dates that various camps were in operation. Sometimes this detail got quite tedious and made sections of the book a chore to read. The book has a number of interesting narratives throughout it, but has just as much volume dedicated to less interesting subject matter.

There is also a substantial amount of dialogue devoted to the various political factions that the German POWs belonged or subscribed to (Nazi, anti-Nazi, German patriot, communist, democrat, etc.) I found it interesting that there were such diverse political views held by the German POWs.

Another interesting point was that Afrika Corp soldiers considered themselves the "Real Soldiers" and thought of latter arriving POWs from the French/Italian campaigns as "sissies".

The book had several interesting annecdotes about the POWs escape attempts, their interactions with the Americans (their guards, civilian foremen, and even female lovers!). The Germans were fascinated by the wildlife in Florida and some of the POWs had small alligators for pets (very briefly) and highly prized snake skins to make belts out of. The narrative about the POW who escaped and committed suicide after hazing by his fellow POWs was quite compelling. A more humorous narrative was about a POW who everyone had thought escaped but was actually still living on the base and would sneak food from the mess hall. By the time the Americans found him the war was over and the other Germans had long since left to return back to Europe!

My favorite part of the book was the narrative at the very end that dealt with a POW who traveled for a week around Florida with a Red Cross Representative visiting POW camps. His description of the University of Tampa and the Promenade with the fine old homes on Tampa Bay sound just like I remember them myself (I was there some 50 years after him!).

An very good read for lovers of WWII history.

                                Book Description

"You're too old! You're too old for physical therapy! Go home ... go to bed. There's nothing else we can do," the doctor said. A life sentence handed to Guziejka--age forty. Tired of living half his life either in pain or drugged, desperate to keep his family from being torn apart, he enters a Pain Unit. He willingly embraces psychotherapy, psychomotor, psychodrama, Gestalt Therapy, physical therapy and massage to take control of his pain. With humor and humility, Guziejka takes us from the edge of despair to enjoying "waking in the morning and smelling the day!" Pain-My Friend, one man's personal journey to recover his life from chronic pain, from hopelessness, is a must for anyone who suffers with chronic pain.

5 out of 5 stars A doctor told him he was a hopeless case........2002-04-08

Pain--My Friend, by Ed Guziejka, is a groundbreaking book, which tells the experience of a 40 year old man with disabling pain in his back and elsewhere. A doctor, in effect, tells him that he is a hopeless case. Another doctor refers him to a Pain Unit, where he embarks on an arduous road to recovery. The staff there consists of experts in the techniques of physical and psychological therapies. The reader gets an insider's view of the way these treatments are carried out, along with Ed's emotional reactions to them. He works hard under the staff's direction, and the results are dramatic.
As a physician, specializing in psychiatry, I found this book clear and fascinating. It gives an inside-out view of psychosomatic medicine. It should be read by all health professionals as well as by all who suffer from chronic pain.

I met the author of this book at a writers' club where he read a few pages from his book. I decided to buy it right then because I come across many people with chronic pain. I have never seen a book about someone's personal experience with this problem before. I just finished the book. Reading it you live through his stay at the Pain Unit with him. It is very easy to read and picture the events. There are no long-winded discussions of theories. Just the facts. I think this is a worthwhile book for anyone who works with or suffers from chronic pain, especially low back pain. It shows you that there is hope.
