This volume, containing 20 chapters, focuses on the biosynthesis of the different classes of carbohydrates and their derivatives. The first part of this volume concentrates on the three classes of glycan-bearing molecules that mediate bio-recognition events, namely, glycoproteins, glycolipids, and glycosaminoglycans. Thus, the first four chapters highlight the key role played by glycosidases and glycosyl transferases in the processing of glycan chains in glycoproteins and on inhibitors of the glycosidases. The next two chapters feature the biosynthesis of glycosphingolipids, sphingolipid transport and degradation, and the regulation of glycolipid biosynthesis in developing tissues and tumor cells. Chapter 7 is devoted to the biosynthesis of proteoglycans with particular emphasis on the glycosaminoglycans. In the second part, the volume treats the molecules of importance in protozoans and bacteria. Thus, chapter 8 describes the biosynthesis o

5 out of 5 stars A book that changed my outlook on life.......2003-05-16

Baxter's story is inspiring. He maintains hope and committment in the face of huge opposition from the State. I first read it 30 years ago and it really made an impact on my thinking and outlook on life.

          5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece.......2002-07-19

I am not good enough at writing to put together a review that does this book justice. All I can say is that Archibald Baxter was a true hero, the bravest man I know of, and this is the saddest book I have ever read.

5 out of 5 stars War - just say no........2000-09-27

This is an amazing book written by an amazing man. As powerful as "All Quiet On The Western Front" ,it points out the extremes of human nature as well as the vulnerability of every person to persecution by even "democratic" governments. Unfortunatly, the hard reality revealed in this book is that the majority of humans are only capable of blind allegience to a state, and too few willing to resist whatever the cost. I don't think I could have done what Archie Baxter did, and I pray I never have to find out!

4 out of 5 stars A profound tale of bravery and belief........1998-07-24

This autobiographical story is of a New Zealand potato farmer whose absolute resolution and commitment to belief is both unique and extraordinary. A pacifist forcibly taken to the first world war by his government, this story is one of a man with immense conviction in his belief and of the military force intent on forcing him into submission.

Throughout the book Archibald Baxters' confidence in the righteousness of his own belief and the lack of ill will he shows to those who punished and brutalised him is really quite remarkable. Despite the immense suffering Baxter endured, the book is remarkably balanced and honest in its description of all the people involved.

This book was first written in the 1930's I believe, on events from 1916-1918. Despite this We Will Not Cease is even today a moving and profound account of a man who not only held strong beliefs but when these beliefs were tested he defended them to such an extraordinary degree.

We Will Not Ce! ase is a very readable account of man's moral courage being tested to the extreme, and against all odds, of succeeding.

5 out of 5 stars awesome tricks with ordinary cards.......2007-09-13

this book along with fulves first one are staples in my magic. The tricks will leave your audience amazed especially because you can use a borrowed ordinary deck of cards. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves magic.

              4 out of 5 stars Excelent choice.......2005-12-23

I actually prefer this book to the first one. If you have any doubt about the effects in this book just learn the very first trick. I've used it for years and it just knocks people off their feet. Now, I do a lot of sleight of hand magic but a trick doesn't have to be difficult to be good. It's the crowd response that counts.

Like most of these Dover magic books, there are some real stinkers in there. But if you pick and choose you can find some real gems.

This is an excelent book for a young magician just starting out. It's a good choice overall.

4 out of 5 stars Good Beginner Book.......2005-11-23

All of Karl Fulves books are good for beginning magicians. When you read the effects they seem very simplistic, but with good presentations everything is very usable material. As a professional magician I am often asked where to start learning effects and this would be a good place.

5 out of 5 stars Another great book!.......2002-04-07

This is another really fine book of material for the average magician. Much is from 'Pallbeares Review', a magazine published by the author, and now considered one of the best sources for excellent material.
Many of the effects in this book are mathematical, and will fool most people, including magicians. The nice part is that you don't have to understand the mathematics, or why it works, to be able to do it. All that is required is attention to detail and good audience management. For that reason, the magician-to-be should be at least 12 years old, although some of the tricks could be done by someone who is younger.

1 out of 5 stars Never get Self Working books.......2001-06-24

I have wasted hours and hours reading these selfworking books and have learned ONE trick which is foolproof and i like greatly. All the other tricks are so easy to figure out or mathematical which is not very impressive. It is in these type books that mathematical tricks that have ruined card magic are learned. I used to think card magic ... until finally I saw some good card tricks. All the goodcard tricks i have ever seen require sleights, such as the glide, double lift, false shuffles, or else need gimmmicks that can be examined like the short card and stripper deck. These self working books have tricks without sleights or gimichs. Good card tricks don't work if there isn't sleights or examinable genius gimmicks. So don't waste your money on these over priced books

2 out of 5 stars A Bit Disappointing, but okay........2007-10-10

The book seemed to dismiss the incredible way God used this woman's gift of healing, majoring mostly on her failures as a human being. We are ALL flawed, but few are willing to give their entire life to God. Yes, she was human, but a true blessing to thousands and thousands of people in need. After reading the book I felt sad rather than inspired or uplifted.

                Book Description

Chile was the first major Latin American nation to carry out a complete neoliberal transformation. Its policies—encouraging foreign investment, privatizing public sector companies and services, lowering trade barriers, reducing the size of the state, and embracing the market as a regulator of both the economy and society—produced an economic boom that some have hailed as a “miracle” to be emulated by other Latin American countries. But how have Chile’s millions of workers, whose hard labor and long hours have made the miracle possible, fared under this program? Through empirically grounded historical case studies, this volume examines the human underside of the Chilean economy over the past three decades, delineating the harsh inequities that persist in spite of growth, low inflation, and some decrease in poverty and unemployment.

Implemented in the 1970s at the point of the bayonet and in the shadow of the torture chamber, the neoliberal policies of Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship reversed many of the gains in wages, benefits, and working conditions that Chile’s workers had won during decades of struggle and triggered a severe economic crisis. Later refined and softened, Pinochet’s neoliberal model began, finally, to promote economic growth in the mid-1980s, and it was maintained by the center-left governments that followed the restoration of democracy in 1990. Yet, despite significant increases in worker productivity, real wages stagnated, the expected restoration of labor rights faltered, and gaps in income distribution continued to widen. To shed light on this history and these ongoing problems, the contributors look at industries long part of the Chilean economy—including textiles and copper—and industries that have expanded more recently—including fishing, forestry, and agriculture. They not only show how neoliberalism has affected Chile’s labor force in general but also how it has damaged the environment and imposed special burdens on women. Painting a sobering picture of the two Chiles—one increasingly rich, the other still mired in poverty—these essays suggest that the Chilean miracle may not be as miraculous as it seems.

The late Elder Henry D. Moyle's family commissioned the prominent LDS historian Richard D. Poll to write this biography of the influential church leader. It remained unpublished for over a decade until after Poll's death. Poll wrote it on the principle of "warts and all." The result is a fair and carefully balanced portrait that depicts the man's strengths and weaknesses. Moyle was a hard-charging, energetic man who was full of faith. He was greatly responsible for the church's explosive growth after World War II. Poll vividly captures this crucial moment in church history. But Moyle perhaps pushed too hard in some ways: the church was brought close to insolvency by Moyle's enthusiasm for new buildings. The pressure to bring in converts to help fund all this expansion led to some excesses in the missionary program--the famous "baseball baptisms", where young people became members after only the most cursory contact with the church's athletic programs. Eventually Moyle was relieved of much of his responsibility and died soon after, some said of a broken heart. His optimism was typical of his culture and times. Poll's book tells with sympathy and honesty this important edpisode in our history.

                  Book Description

In The Miraculous Day of Amalia Gomez, Amalia Gomez thinks she sees a large silver cross in the sky. A miraculous sign, perhaps, but one the down-to-earth Amalia does not trust. Through Amalia, we take a vivid and moving tour of the "other Hollywood," populated by working-class Mexican Americans, as John Rechy blends tough realism with religious and cultural fables to take us into the life of a Chicano family in L.A. Epic in scope and vision, The Miraculous Day of Amalia Gomez is classic Rechy.

Gorgeous prose graces every page of this book! The ending is one of the truly all-time greats -- the work of a master at his peak. The story will appeal to anyone who has ever wondered about the meaning of faith. Don't be put off by the book's small size -- this novel packs a punch, well after you've put it down!
