Membrane fusion and targeting processes are tightly regulated and coordinated. Dozens of proteins, originating from both the cytoplasm and membranes are involved. The discovery of homologous proteins from yeast to neurons validates a unified view.
Although much is known about the interfering proteins, the events occurring when two lipid bilayers actually fuse are less clear. It should be remembered that lipid bilayers behave like soap-bubbles fusing when meeting each other. In this respect interfering proteins should be considered as preventing undesirable and unnecessary fusion and eventually directing the biological membrane fusion process (when, where, how, and overcoming the activation energy).
In this latest volume in the renowned Subcellular Biochemistry series, some aspects of fusion of biological membranes as well as related problems are presented. Although not complete, there is a lot of recent information including on virus-induced membrane fusion. The contributors of the chapters are all among the researchers who performed many of the pioneering studies in the field.

Systems of conservation laws arise naturally in physics and chemistry. To understand them and their consequences (shock waves, finite velocity wave propagation) properly in mathematical terms requires, however, knowledge of a broad range of topics. This book sets up the foundations of the modern theory of conservation laws describing the physical models and mathematical methods, leading to the Glimm scheme. Building on this the author then takes the reader to the current state of knowledge in the subject. The maximum principle is considered from the viewpoint of numerical schemes and also in terms of viscous approximation. Small waves are studied using geometrical optics methods. Finally, the initial-boundary problem is considered in depth. Throughout, the presentation is reasonably self contained, with large numbers of exercises and full discussion of all the ideas. This makes it an ideal text for graduate courses in the area of partial differential equations.

Many times great heroes are forgotten in favour of more popular ones; however, in this book, Wayne Ralph presents not only an excellent account of Barker's war career, but also his life before and after the war. The reader is aquainted also with the facts that for years after the war deeply hurt most air force pilots. This book is the best I have read about William Barker.

A Book to Help our Children Live a Sexually Pure Life.......2007-09-08

Joshua Harris has written an excellent book on how to help our children lead a sexually pure life. Mr. Harris explains in part one of his book how our inborn lust is the source of our problems with sexual sin, and in part two he lists steps and disciplines to take to overcome our inborn desire to sin.

Part one lays out the problem with lust. Lust is an in-born part of every person to some degree, but is especially problematic in males. Undisciplined lust leads to all sorts of sexual impurity, deviancy, and sin. Mr. Harris explains that purely in the human realm, it is almost impossible to overcome sexual lust and sin. Yet, with a life devoted to the Lord and his will for our lives to be pure and free of sexual sin, Mr. Harris uses Bible scripture verses to show how sexual temptation can be overcome and disciplined with the result a life pleasing to God. He uses examples from his own struggles to reign in lust and also recounts other people's storys as abject lessons for us all to learn from. I could relate to the struggles, as lust is common to us all.

Part two then details how a person devoted to the Lord and determined to live a sexually pure life can achieve this goal. The emphasis is on having a relationshp with the Lord, and how this relationship and willingness to please the Lord can lead us to sacrifice our sexual lust on our personal altar in an act of worship. Therefore, the relationship with the Lord is paramount in overcoming sexual sin. For if there is no real relationship or a sense that the Lord is alive and active in the lives of people, then there will be little or no motivation to give up our lustful desires. Giving up our sexual lust is a sacrifice we do to please our King. With this basis, Mr. Harris then cites scripture to show how lust can be overcome through specific disciplines. He urges the reader to determine in what areas of sex is there a specific temptation to sin. He then urges the reader though various diciplines how to enact a plan to avoid tempation though avoidance of the triggers that lead to sexual sin.

The controversial subject of masturbation is discussed, and whether it is a sinful behavior or one that is allowed on a limited basis. I learned that masturbation is the end result of allowing sexual temptation to gain a foothold in our minds and how when overcome with lust, we indulge that lust with masturbation. Masturbation is an act of idol worship, with the idol being the sexual object or fantasy we hold in our minds. Therefore, masturbation is not the real problem; it is symptomatic of a mind that is consumed by sexual lust. Mr. Harris also deals with the issue of whether masturbation can ever be justified in the life of a devoted Christian.

Since print, television, movie, and internet media are profound sources of potential temptation and lust, Mr. Harris devotes a chapter to learing how to develop filters in our minds that automatically kick in and not allow us to welcome or engage the sexual media images. He devotes a chapter to tips on overcoming internet pornography addiction, as this is a tremedous source of temptation for both males and females.

Finally, Mr. Harris explains how with the power of the Holy Spirit indwelling in our hearts and minds, we can fall on the power of the Spirit to help us though times of temptation and bring final victory in this area of life.

I purchased this book for my sons to read, as I want them to be free of sexual sin in their lives. My father never taught me these lessons and disciplines and I want to be proactive in my son's lives to help them deal with the problem of lust.

This is an excellent resource for the Christian believer who wants to help himself and his children lead lives of sexual purtity. Sexual temtpations affect us all, and when indulged in can bring a life into complete destruction and ruin. Sexual sin is perhaps the greatest struggle that men will have in their lives, and this book will give specific strategies to win the battle over sexual lust.

Finally, this is not a book for the unbeliever. First, there is no relationship with God, thus no motivation to overcome the urge to sexual sin. Secondly, the unbeliever may see no need to resist lust, as he does not yet realize that undisciplined sexual lust will lead to problems, both immediate and long-term. When the unbeliever becomes ensnared in the problems of sexual lust, perhaps then he or she will seek the Lord as a solution to his problems. Then this book would be of great value.

Surprising..........2007-08-16

I found myself surprisingly enjoying this book. Timing in which I read books probably should be given into account as well though. I read it as I have been struggling with the expectations of myself in terms of sexuality as someone who is training to be an ordained minister. I don't know if I would recommend it to everyone, because I think that our humanity and sexuality is a gift from God. I don't like how sexuality is demonized within the realm of Chrisitanity sometimes, that is why I give this book four stars instead of five. However I would recommend it to people do want to change after having a history of being sexually active outside of marriage. I think that Harris takes a very strong Christ against culture approach in this book, which is not for everybody. Honestly, frequently these kinds of books make me angry but the way Harris framed this argument was really helpful to me at this point in time as I am considering what it might truly take for me to lead a life of chastity. The only other argument I think I really found convicing on this topic would be Richard Foster's in his chapter on chastity in Celebration of Disciplines.

Great book for men and women of God..........2007-07-26

My brother recommended this book to me when we were on a trip. I read through it in no time because of the helpful information inside it that applies to godly men AND women's lifestyles in the 21st century.

Mr. Harris stresses on the facts of necessity of accountability and the understand of the grace of God to be freed from the lust in our society today.

He tries to refrain from going into detail on the stories about other peoples experiences in their problem(s), which makes this book much easier to read if you have a wondering thought process that gets you into trouble.

I enjoyed this book tremendously and it has opened my eyes in more ways to keep pure for Christ.

I think Joshua Harris did a great job with his "Not Even a Hint" book, which is why I turned to this one for further insight... However I found (upon reading the first page!) that it's pretty much the same exact book as "Not Even a Hint" so although this book is probably great, since "Not Even a Hint" was great, don't bother with this one if you've read the other. Compare the tables of content online if you don't believe me!

Great for putting EQ to work.......2007-08-23

After reading the previous reviews, I felt pressured to come up with another adjective than practical to describe Freedman's book. However, it's the most fitting. I've read several books on the subject already and up until now, I was disappointed that nothing put EQ into a context in which I could apply it everday. This is not a collection of studies with page after page of theory. Instead, this book is chocked full of real-life, simple examples and applications that make EQ very real, especially in the workplace. The content is supported by a format that takes into account the reader experience and breaks the copy into digestable pieces separated by highly-relevant quotations and exhibits. This is a book that I can easily recommend to EQ novices who are looking for ways to affect change in their lives right away.

An excellent introduction to Emotional Intelligence.......2007-08-21

Freedman has done a great job of separating the wheat from the chaff here. Written in an easy-to-grasp manner, this book is an excellent synthesis of the important ideas in the growing field of emotional intelligence. This important work combines relevant theory and research findings with practical applications.

Substantive, Provocative, Practical.......2007-07-27

I've been interested in emotional intelligence for almost a decade and read everything on the topic, and until now I've been unclear how to actually use this brilliant concept. I heard Freedman speak at a leadership summit and rushed to order the book - I found his presentation a unique mix of heart and science... the book is the same. There's a ton of hard data here, but it's presented in service to leading. So it's not abstract, it just walks you through how emotions can be used to make better decisions, to influence, and to engage people.

On that note - the book is focused on leadership, there are many examples of business people and those in the military and government, but I suspect it equally well applies to leading one's own life. It's a very "human" book and I'm on fire to put these ideas into practice -- highly recommended.

I've read many emotional intelligence books but this is the first I've read which integrates theory with real life experience. Congratulations to the author for writing a book that is practical, useful and "real".

A very informative book that covers many aspects of heart disease including causes and prevention. Vocabulary is appropriate for the target audience. The inclusion of a glossary, index, and web links enhance the effectiveness of this book. The only drawback is the lack of a pronounciation guide for the technical term used in the book. Other than that this is an excellent choice for anyone who needs or wants more information on this topic.

I'm not sure anyone could say it better than Andrei Codrescu, famed
NPR commentator: "In the growing constellation of Katrina stories,
Josh Clark's masterful tale shines brightest. The Apocalypse
destroyed a city and ripped to shreds lives, but the legibility of
its profound inner impact had to wait for this book, which is a love
story. Clark's book is our Love in a Time of Cholera, but, even more
than Marquez's novel, it is immediate and wrenching and true, while
its rhythms, like Marquez's, are nothing short of majestic. Josh
Clark has written the great nonfiction New Orleans novel, a book
that's here to stay."

Anyone who thinks this books conveys "frat boy" sensibilities not
only must not be able to read, but must have not made it far into the
book. It's a rough, yet frighteningly beautiful, emotional journey. A
heck of a book even if it was pure fiction, which it unfortunately is
not.

Beg to Differ.......2007-08-31

I read all the glowing reviews and some of my friends are featured copiously throughout this volume--people who are actually unbelievably gracious and compassionate--but I just couldn't get past Joshua Clark's drunken frat boy sensibilities--something about Clark struck me in the back of the head like a silver spoon from a spoiled, New England prep-school, rich kid's soft, workless hands. I lived through it too and it wasn't a party like Mr. Clark paints it...not one bit. I could only read half of it; as lively as his memoir could get there was something incredibly immature and insensitive about Mr. Clark's actions in his account...maybe the latter half of the book redeems itself and if so, I will review in kind. Although it can be engaging in a kind-of voyeuristic sense, I can only give it two stars because the five star praise by the other posters was far too generous.

If you try to imagine what Hurricane Katrina was like, you cannot possibly come anywhere close to the horror and the anguish that we went through. I lived through it and find it hard to bring those images back into mind. I often think that it is a period of my life that I do not want to remember.
On the other hand, it was Katrina that caused me to land in Little Rock, Arkansas and my life to take an entirely new path.
Joshua Clark did not leave New Orleans during the storm. Instead he stayed and got together with several others and pooled resources and used their energy in an attempt to save the city. At the time that Katrina hit, Clark was working as a correspondent for NPR and began a project of recording the voices of victims of the storm in the Gulf South. It is these voices that are the spine of this memoir which does not dwell on the horror and devastation of Katrina but shows the compassion, the anguish and the kindness, the madness and the mercy of the people of America.
Written in journalistic style but displaying raw emotion and innocence, Clark tells us of loss and renewal and the ability to bounce back with hope.
There are and there surely will be more Katrina stories. Clark's book is unique in that it is a love story--a paean to the city he loves. The city was destroyed and lives were torn asunder. Yet Katrina also caused an inner impact that Clark so beautifully gives us in this book. What he writes will wrench your heart but it is all true--it all happened. Not an easy book to read, "Heart Like Water" is poignant and evocative and larger than life. Written in the first person, it is the story of one of the most terrible periods of American history and is entertaining but important as well as a look at how people face change, adjust to it and survive.
There were times as I was reading that I felt like I had a pill in my throat that I could not swallow--the emotional experience was that strong. The book is raw and reveals a look at the people affected by the storm from an angle we have not yet had. Clark relates the happenings of the storm as they happened and we get the truth without sermonizing.
Clark moves from an observer to an active rebel to a mystical madman, a victim of trauma and a political activist. He saw the pain and suffering and he lets us see it. We feel for the people who lost everything (I know how it feels because I lost all except what I was wearing) but we also see a new approach to loss-that which is not lost--the love for a place and its people.
Everyone asks what it was like when the levees broke. Look no further, it is all here in this wonderful memoir of a terrible time.

A Perfect Read.......2007-08-02

Being from New Orleans and choosing to evacuate. I was able to see through Mr. Clakrs eyes how theing were "behind the cameras". I was impressed in the way he told of others and the ruins they're lives were in. All with being in his own hell and remembering to keep a record of it.

This book is truly from the heart. The author takes the reader on a journey of tears and laughter that brings empathy for those who have ever had to traverse the unfamiliar world of hospitals, special needs and changed relationships.

Though the book was published in 1987, it is a timeles story of the evolution of a woman and how emotional pain brought positive transformation to her life.
