Book Description
The biomineralization and biomaterials research communities have not been working side by side in the past few years. To our knowledge, no book has addressed before this topic in such an integrated and "looking forward" perspective. There is, therefore, a necessity for a book that would address, in an integrated way, topics that go from understanding biomineralization processes of different mineralized tissues (that means: not only bone, tooth, etc.) to the use of that science to engineer new biomimetic processes and materials. In fact, only an understanding of the relevant fundamentals and a simultaneous application oriented view will lead to the design of new biomimetic materials and processing routes (including production of biomimetic coatings). There is almost no training content on most of the books that are aimed at presenting new breakthroughs on biomineralization science. So, this book will constitute a complimentary tool as it seemed to be the best forum to educate and brainstorming on this area of such strategic importance.

Book Description
The volumes VIII, IX and X examine the physical and technical foundation for recent progress in applied scanning probe techniques. The first volume came out in January 2004, the second to fourth volumes in early 2006 and the fifth to seventh volumes in late 2006. The field is progressing so fast that there is a need for a set of volumes every 12 to 18 months to capture latest developments. These volumes constitute a timely comprehensive overview of SPM applications. After introducing scanning probe microscopy, including sensor technology and tip characterization, chapters on use in various industrial applications are presented. Industrial applications span topographic and dynamical surface studies of thin-film semiconductors, polymers, paper, ceramics, and magnetic and biological materials. The chapters have been written by leading researchers and application scientists from all over the world and from various industries to provide a broader perspective.

Book Description
As an introduction to fundamental geometric concepts and tools needed for solving problems of a geometric nature using a computer, this book attempts to fill the gap between standard geometry books, which are primarily theoretical, and applied books on computer graphics, computer vision, or robotics, which sometimes do not cover the underlying geometric concepts in detail. Gallier offers an introduction to affine geometry, projective geometry, Euclidean geometry, basics of differential geometry and Lie groups, and a glimpse of computational geometry (convex sets, Voronoi diagrams and Delaunay triangulations) and explores many of the practical applications of geometry. Some of these applications include computer vision (camera calibration) efficient communication, error correcting codes, cryptography, motion interpolation, and robot kinematics. This comprehensive text covers most of the geometric background needed for conducting research in computer graphics, geometric modeling, computer vision, and robotics and as such will be of interest to a wide audience including computer scientists, mathematicians, and engineers.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic! One of a kind........2001-01-13
This is a beautiful and unique book. The style is lively and the explanations are remarkably clear. The author makes a significant effort to demistify concepts before defining them rigorously and proving facts about them. It is impressive to see the variety of the topics covered in the book. For example, there is a nice and easy introduction to Lie groups and Lie algebras, and an exquisite treatment of the elementary differential geometry of curves and surfaces. As the author states, this material is a write-up of lectures given by the famous geometer Eugene Calabi (of the Calabi-Yau manifolds!), and this is quite a treat. Gallier's presentation definitely rivals do Carmo, one of the best. It is also refreshing and illuminating to see topics such as QR-decomposition and decomposition in terms of Householder matrices, treated from a geometric point of view. For that matter, the treatment of polar forms and SVD is superior, although perhaps a bit abstract for my taste. There are lots of problems, including programming projects. At first glance, the problems are on the hard side. This could turn off some students. In conclusion, this is a great book. Even though it is very well written, this is not an "easy book". However, perseverant readers will find its reading very rewarding. It is a great preparation for more advanced books on Lie groups, differential geometry, and projective and algebraic geometry. The sections on applications are very nice, but there should be more and they should be more extensive. Oh, I was forgetting, the internet supplement is great. For example, there is a wonderful treatment of rational curves and surfaces. Every geometry lover should have this book!

Rip-off !!!!.......2006-12-11
This was a complete waste of money...
Ok, this guys make a conference and then publish the proceedings...
The papers (I mean "chapters") are quite specialized. The claim in
the back cover that "relevant ideas are introduced in a self-contained
manner and only a knowledge of calculus and linear algebra is assumed"
is just a straight lie. My interested in the book was chapter 12,
systems of partial differential equations but I obtained just a brief
summary of the theory that is not useful at all.

Book Description
The Redcatcher Express is the author's Vietnam War memoirs. Drafted and sent to fight in the war, the author, a musician by trade, is thwarted in his attempt to get into an Army band. He ends up in a Recon Platoon of the 199th Light Infantry Brigade, where he endures the adversity of war. The situation worsens when he is assigned to be point man for Recon. At the forefront of battle, the author feels that he is losing his senses. His prayers are answered when a reporter for the Stars and Stripes writes a story about his musical past. The Commanding General of the 199th reads the story and requests that the author assemble a combo to entertain the troops and raise the morale. The author organizes the Redcatcher Express and the band, made up of American GIs, becomes popular with the troops. He later discovers that raising the morale is instrumental in increasing the enemy body count in the 199th's war campaign. "The body count of Vietcong was the centerpiece of the American approach to waging the war, conducted through search and destroy missions in remote jungle regions." Customer Reviews:
Funny - Entertaining , The Redcather Express.......2007-09-11
Mora's book, the Redcatcher Express takes you thru his tour of duty as a soldier then musician in the Army during the Vietnam War. After weathering the terrifing dangers of the front lines, Mora shares his moments as band leader of the Redcatcher Express, a band formed while seving. Outrageously funny, this book is also entertaining as well, with the seriousness of the Vietnam War as the backdrop, the antics Mora and the band get into and out of are magnified. Mora's "have nothing to lose" attidude as the band leader gets him to places and situations many may only dream of. A well developed cast of characters in his story all lend a hand in enhancing the narrative as told by Mora. As a fellow musician, I was able to relate and understand the different circumstances Mora experiences. I found myself rooting for him and his mates as they try to "bend the rules" of his superiors. I highly recommend The Red Catcher Express as an innovative reading experience and especially for those presently serving in the armed forces.
COMPELLING STORY OF MUSIC AND WAR-PERFECT FOR THOSE IN THE MILITARY.......2007-05-11
An excellent and compelling story set within the backdrop of the 1960's and the Vietnam War with music running as an undercurrent throughout. A spirited, and sometimes hard look at the life experiences of a young and talented musician who is drafted into the Army at the age of 26, and placed at the forefront of harms way because he did not enlist and therefore cannot be placed in the Army Band. His deliverance comes when he is discovered by his Commanding General and commissioned to form The Redcatcher Express, a "soul band" whose mission it is to raise the morale of his fellow soldiers. Colorfully written and simply put this book moves with an absorbing pace which keeps the reader engrossed and hesitant to put it down. This is a true to life and informative depiction of a soldier's day to day Army experience in Vietnam complete with all the sweat, grit, fear, murder, sex, booze, adventure, desperation and compassion. The outrageous adventures of the Redcatcher Express, from its formation to its conclusion is at the same time humorous and heart rending as the band fulfills its mission of healing and uplifting the human spirit through music in an environment that is rife with violence and the silent terror that is war. I highly recommend this book with its well drawn and colorful characters as an exciting, entertaining and deeply moving reading experience. It is a perfect reading or gift selection for those in the military.---Alma Alvarez, Library Director, Town of Chester Public Library

Book Description
An acclaimed neurologist widely viewed as Hungary's first contemporary author, Geza Csath was also a morphine addict who shot and killed his wife before killing himself. The diary begins as a clinically graphic depiction of Csath's conquest of dozens of women - from chambermaids to aristocrats - during his tenure as a doctor at a Slovakian health spa in 1912.
Customer Reviews:
A Flawed Man.......2006-05-12
After reading Csath's short stories on addiction I thought I was ready for anything, but his diary also chronicles some loathsome behavior towards women that disgusted me. While Csath is one of the world's best anyalysts of the addictive state, He's at least a cad, and at most a rapist. It's hard to believe that people used to think this way.
