    Book Description

Since the introduction of the concept of synthons in 1967, it has become common among practitioners of organic synthesis to treat numerous synthetic reactions as simple combinations of the appropriate synthons instead of writing out the actual reagents in full. This book provides chemists who plan their synthetic routes manually with information on some of the new umpoled synthons and the use of synthons in planning organic syntheses. The major part of the text is devoted to acyl anions, hydroxycarbonyl and related anions, carbonyl (ALPHA)-cations, and carbonyl (BETA)-anions. Another group discussed comprises carbanionic synthons in which the carbon atom carries a singly bonded heteratom. Emphasis is on the aspects relating to synthetic use. This work includes a tabular presentation of known applications, along with relevant data on the sources, auxiliary reagents, yields, and restrictions. More than 2,000 references cited.

        Book Description

The differential geometry of curves and surfaces in Euclidean space has fascinated mathematicians since the time of Newton. Here the authors take a novel approach by casting the theory into a new light, that of singularity theory. The second edition of this successful textbook has been thoroughly revised throughout and includes a multitude of new exercises and examples. A new final chapter has been added that covers recently developed techniques in the classification of functions of several variables, a subject central to many applications of singularity theory. Also in this second edition are new sections on the Morse lemma and the classification of plane curve singularities. The only prerequisites for students to follow this textbook are a familiarity with linear algebra and advanced calculus. Thus it will be invaluable for anyone who would like an introduction to the modern theories of catastrophes and singularities.

          Book Description

This work treats an introduction to commutative ring theory and algebraic plane curves, requiring of the student only a basic knowledge of algebra, with all of the algebraic facts collected into several appendices that can be easily referred to, as needed.

Kunz's proven conception of teaching topics in commutative algebra together with their applications to algebraic geometry makes this book significantly different from others on plane algebraic curves. The exposition focuses on the purely algebraic aspects of plane curve theory, leaving the topological and analytical viewpoints in the background, with only casual references to these subjects and suggestions for further reading.

          Most important to this text:

          * Emphasizes and utilizes the theory of filtered algebras, their graduated rings and Rees algebras, to deduce basic facts about the intersection theory of plane curves

          * Presents residue theory in the affine plane and its applications to intersection theory

          * Methods of proof for the Riemann–Roch theorem conform to the presentation of curve theory, formulated in the language of filtrations and associated graded rings

          * Examples, exercises, figures and suggestions for further study round out this fairly self-contained textbook

          -----

From a review of the German edition:

"[T]he reader is invited to learn some topics from commutative ring theory by mainly studying their illustrations and applications in plane curve theory. This methodical approach is certainly very enlightening and efficient for both teachers and students…The whole text is a real masterpiece of clarity, rigor, comprehension, methodical skill, algebraic and geometric motivation…highly enlightening, motivating and entertaining at the same time…One simply cannot do better in writing such a textbook."

            Book Description

Singularity theory is a field of intensive study in modern mathematics with fascinating relations to algebraic geometry, complex analysis, commutative algebra, representation theory, theory of Lie groups, topology, dynamical systems, and many more, and with numerous applications in the natural and technical sciences.

This book presents the basic singularity theory of analytic spaces, including local deformation theory, and the theory of plane curve singularities. Plane curve singularities are a classical object of study, rich of ideas and applications, which still is in the center of current research and as such provides an ideal introduction to the general theory. Deformation theory is an important technique in many branches of contemporary algebraic geometry and complex analysis. This introductory text provides the general framework of the theory while still remaining concrete.

In the first part of the book the authors develop the relevant techniques, including the Weierstraß preparation theorem, the finite coherence theorem etc., and then treat isolated hypersurface singularities, notably the finite determinacy, classification of simple singularities and topological and analytic invariants. In local deformation theory, emphasis is laid on the issues of versality, obstructions, and equisingular deformations. The book moreover contains a new treatment of equisingular deformations of plane curve singularities including a proof for the smoothness of the mu-constant stratum which is based on deformations of the parameterization. Computational aspects of the theory are discussed as well. Three appendices, including basic facts from sheaf theory, commutative algebra, and formal deformation theory, make the reading self-contained.

The material, which can be found partly in other books and partly in research articles, is presented from a unified point of view for the first time. It is given with complete proofs, new in many cases. The book thus can serve as source for special courses in singularity theory and local algebraic and analytic geometry.

                Book Description

Algebraic Geometry provides an impressive theory targeting the understanding of geometric objects defined algebraically. Geometric Modeling uses every day, in order to solve practical and difficult problems, digital shapes based on algebraic models. In this book, we have collected articles bridging these two areas. The confrontation of the different points of view results in a better analysis of what the key challenges are and how they can be met. We focus on the following important classes of problems: implicitization, classification, and intersection. The combination of illustrative pictures, explicit computations and review articles will help the reader to handle these subjects.

                        Book Description

This book covers the beautiful theory of resolutions of surface singularities in characteristic zero. The primary goal is to present in detail, and for the first time in one volume, two proofs for the existence of such resolutions. One construction was introduced by H.W.E. Jung, and another is due to O. Zariski. Jung's approach uses quasi-ordinary singularities and an explicit study of specific surfaces in affine three-space. In particular, a new proof of the Jung-Abhyankar theorem is given via ramification theory. Zariski's method, as presented, involves repeated normalisation and blowing up points. It also uses the uniformization of zero-dimensional valuations of function fields in two variables, for which a complete proof is given.

Despite the intention to serve graduate students and researchers of Commutative Algebra and Algebraic Geometry, a basic knowledge on these topics is necessary only. This is obtained by a thorough introduction of the needed algebraic tools in the two appendices.

                          Book Description

FOR A FIGHTER PILOT IN THE MIGHTY EIGHTH, DEATH WAS ALWAYS A HEARTBEAT AWAY.

When the skies of Europe blazed with the fiercest air battles in history, fighter pilots like Norman “Bud” Fortier were in the thick of it, flying four hundred miles an hour at thirty thousand feet, dodging flak and dueling with Nazi aces. In their role as “escorts” to Flying Fortresses and Liberators, the fighter squadrons’ ability to blast enemy aircraft from the sky was key to the success of pinpoint bombing raids on German oil refineries, communication and supply lines, and other crucial targets.

Flying in formation with the bomber stream, Fortier and the rest of his squadron helped develop dive-bombing and strafing tactics for the Thunderbolts and Mustangs. As the war progressed, fighter squadrons began to carry out their own bombing missions. From blasting V-1 missile sites along France’s “rocket coast” and the hell-torn action of D day to the critical attacks on the Ruhr Valley and massive daylight raids on German industrial targets, Fortier was part of the Allies’ bitter struggle to bring the Nazi war machine to a halt. In describing his own hundred-plus missions and by including the accounts of fellow fighter pilots, Fortier recaptures the excitement and fiery terror of the world’s most dangerous cat-and-mouse game.

3 out of 5 stars The Inside Story of WW II Fighter pilots.......2007-10-05

This gives an excellent inside look at the workings of the Army Air Corp in Europe in WW II.

                          4 out of 5 stars A pleasant surprise. Strong, informative, fast-paced, honest........2007-09-10

A real surprise. Written in 2002, I did not imagine that a biography about WW II air war written so late would be so good.

                          Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book! Very Memorable!.......2007-07-27

This book has some of the most memorable quotes, images, and sayings of any other book that I've ever read! The most humurous part of this book is when someone's radio mic got stuck in the on position and the pilot of the Mustang was talking to himself about the mission, the bomber crew, and one of the other Mustang pilots of his squadron. A memorable quote from this part of the book was, "I was laughing so hard, the flak didn't even bother me!"

This book is very detailed in every way! Mr. Fortier takes you on a journey back in time in the way he describes his experience as a combat fighter pilot. He briefly describes his training experience to where it's not bogged down and yet is very interesting and then moves on to the types of aircraft he flew from P-39's, P-47's, and ultimately P-51's. Get this book! You will want to read it over and over again!

4 out of 5 stars An Ace of the Eight:An American Fighter Pilot's Air War in Europe.......2007-07-25

A well written personal account of a WW2 fighter pilot flying two of America's finest fighters of the time, the P-47 Thunderbolt and the P-51 Mustang. As an instrument rated pilot myself, I was chilled by the high rate of fatalities causes by the primitive flight instruments and the sever weather conditions in England at that time. I was shocked to read the Eighth Airforce lost almost as many pilots to weather as to the enemy fighters. Excellent discription of air battles. This book will have a special place in my collection of WW2 flying stories. I recommend this book highly.

                          5 out of 5 stars The fascinating adventures of a WW2 aviator.......2005-12-12

"An Ace of the Eighth: An American Fighter Pilot's Air War in Europe," by Norman "Bud" Fortier, is a memoir by an aviator who served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. Specifically, he served as part of the 355th Fighter Group of the Eighth Air Force. This is a well-written narrative. Fortier creates a vivid and engaging portrait of the men and aircraft that helped to defeat the Nazi empire in Europe. The author strikes a particularly effective balance between fascinating technical details of military aviation and human details that bring his cast of characters alive.

The story is frequently punctuated by accounts of crash landings, deaths, and injuries; Fortier also often writes of aviators who became prisoners of war. Such details underscore the extreme danger of the combat aviators' lives. However, Fortier also details the happy milestones and events shared by the aviation community. Fortier enriches his own narrative by incorporating quotes from other veterans' accounts of the air war; especially interesting is an extensive passage from a German airman's encounter report. Fortier cites some of the secondary sources in his acknowledgements section.

The book is full of colorful, and sometimes humorous, details about life in the WW2 Army Air Corps: a "VD" inspection; a personality clash between a tobacco-chewing Texan and a proper English pilot; crossing the Atlantic on the "Queen Elizabeth" ocean liner; a near-disastrous attempt to light a pot-bellied coke stove with napalm; etc. The technical details about aircraft, tactics, and weapon systems are very interesting, as are the accounts of aerial combat. Also worthy of note is Fortier's dramatic portrait of wartime London. The book is further enhanced by a helpful glossary of military aviation terms and by a section of black-and-white photographs of Fortier, his colleagues, their aircraft, and the air base that served as their wartime home. This is a robust, informative narrative told in a likeable voice. Fortier has written a fine addition to the great canon of WW2 literature.
