Book Description
The transition state is the critical configuration of a reaction system situated at the highest point of the most favorable reaction path on the potential-energy surface, its characteristics governing the dynamic behavior of reacting systems decisively. This text presents an accurate survey of current theoretical investigations of chemical reactions, with a focus on the nature of the transition state. Its scope ranges from general basic theories associated with the transition states, to their computer-assisted applications, through to a number of reactions in a state-of-the-art fashion. It covers various types of gas-phase elementary reactions, as well as some specific types of chemical processes taking place in the liquid phase. Also investigated is the recently developing transition state spectroscopy. This text will not only serve as a contemporary reference book on the concept of the transition state, but will also assist the readers in gaining valuable key principles regarding the essence of chemical kinetics and dynamics.

If you want to have a quick reference book rich in logistic quantitative methods, then this book a very good choice. It is concise an easy to read.

Description:
This paper addresses a hub-and-spoke network problem for railroad freight, where a central planner is to find transport routes, frequency of service, length of trains to be used, and transportation volume. Hub-and-spoke networks, often found in air freight, have not been favoured by railways in the past. Such a structure could be profitable, however, if there exist concentrated freight flows on some service links. We formulate a linear integer programming model whose objective function includes not only the typical operational cost, but also cost due to the transit time spent by freight in the network. We then develop heuristic algorithms to solve large scale instances occurring in rail freight systems in France plus Italy; Germany; and a 10-country European network. By assuming that every node is equipped with consolidation capability, we let the final solution naturally reveal potential hub locations, the impact of several of which is studied by sensitivity analysis.

Don't miss it!!.......2003-01-03
I learned from Rudin's math books when I grew up, starting with
"Baby-Rudin", and I got hooked. Since then I have taught from almost everyone of them.--- Not this one though! This book is different. It does have math though, but at the same time, in the math part[the second half of the book], Rudin surprises you by letting you look behind the curtain. You are let in on how the author, the mathematician Rudin, arrived at some of his theorems. Enlightening!
The early parts of this fascinating book recounts Walter Rudin's childhood in central Europe[Vienna], how he escaped to the US, with his life, as Hitler's armies, and the fire of anti-semitism, engulfed Europe in the years up to the second World War. The last ship sailing, at the eve of WWII, from Europe was like an ark. Mount Ararat was America.
A well meaning reviewer writes on the back-cover to the book as follows: "...Rudin's colorful
history, ... his experiences...".--- Well it is more than that!
Another book,[a somewhat different one, from a slightly earlier period, but still the theme of Europe then, and escape...] starts: ..."This book is to be neither..., and least of all an adventure, for death is not an adventure to those who stand face to face with it..."
One of the best mathematical biographies ever written.......2001-12-20
This book is split into two parts, and while the mathematics is interesting, the personal history is fascinating. His account of being Jewish in Europe in the 1930's and later is an incredible tale of response to the rearing of a "social" movement where his heritage made him and his relatives expendable. Underlying his story is the historical roots of anti-Semitism, as the murder of Jews was hardly without historical precedent in Europe. Furthermore, he describes how popular Nazism was in Austria, as even some Jews would have joined the movement if they had been allowed. To so many, Bolshevism was the greater threat and they had no qualms about the Germans moving against the Soviet Union, viewing such a war as a modern crusade.
Rudin was there through it all, fleeing the Nazis after the Anschluss in Austria and going to France through Switzerland. He spent some time in the military forces of France and England although he did no real fighting. His description of what it was like to go back to Germany after the war as a member of a victorious army is very telling. He found no signs of hostility and none of the Germans he met seemed to care that he was not of Aryan stock.
Through it all, he managed to continue his studies, so that after he left the military, he was able to complete his degrees in the United States, eventually settling in Madison, Wisconsin. He stayed there through his "retirement", which only meant that he no longer had to teach.
I found this to be one of the most interesting biographies of a mathematician that I have ever read. Sadly, that is largely due to his participation in one of the worst events of this or any other time.

Bill Sefton jumped into Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944, with the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne. At 1:30 a.m., he says, "the night sky was lacerated with streams of tracers from ground fire, groping for our C-47 lumbering 300 feet overhead."
Everyone was jumping as the aircraft flew over the Drop Zone, toward the invasion beaches. As the last five men stormed down the aisle of the plane's passenger compartment, Sefton shouted the realization, "Stop! We're over the ocean!"
No one, says the author, had the slightest intention of staying on that plane, and thus he jumped, regardless of what lay below.
It Was My War is written with a simplicity and humor that transcends the horrors of war. A former copywriter for the McCann-Erickson advertising agency in Chicago, Sefton's skill with the language conveys the gravity of the war around him coupled with mission responsibilities described from a very human perspective.

A great book with great humor that soldiers can really identify with. Sefton tells a great story of HIS war and always reminds us that, though it may not always jive with the way historians have portrayed the airborne form WWII, it was the way that HE experienced the war. Personally I would rather listen to what he, someone who was actually there, has to say than what I would get from a historian who retells second hand accounts! As a former Geronimo myself (from the 1990s) I loved what he wrote!

My Life: The Way I Remember It is a collection of short stories written from my point of view. I based the stories on true events, and they are in a basic chronological order. The stories may not be 100% accurate, but the events really happened. I did not use any fictional characters or stories in this book. Every name is the real name of the person in the story. Some of the main characters have passed on, but I am not the only one that is still living. I feel sure that all of them would testify that these events happened and are factually correct, although not 100% accurate. I tell of lightning shocking the milk cow and me. I tell of riding a fish when still a teenager. I also tell of flying through the windshield of my brother's car, when it wrecked, in my early 20s.

I can't put this book down. Very well written with both serious and humorous anecdotes about italian immigrants struggles in the new country. This book starts in 1877 and goes all the way to 2004. Very easy read with short snippets from the author's memory...which is excellent by the way. Being part italian myself I can really appreciate this book. Fascinating stories make you feel part of the author's family. Highly recommended for anyone intersted in italian americans and their family stories. This is a great one.

I picked up the book because the author is my Father. I read the whole book in just days because it is a great book. I never lost interest once while reading. I almost cried a few times while reading because I could feel so much of the emotion coming through. I was able to see through his eyes just how it may have felt at times to be in Vietnam and trying to survive the day to day. Any one wanting to know more about Vietnam and what is was like besides the glamorized T.V. version should try this one. From MRCD to Home coming you get to take the whole ride. NO HOLDS BAR. If you wanted a sugar coated version then go watch a movie. If you want a real idea of what it was like, go ahead and pick up, The Way I Remember It, and share the experience.
A MUST READ!!.......2004-12-11
I'll begin by saying this is the first "war" book I've ever read. I read it twice, as once wasn't enough to absorb the rich content. The book was great and once I picked it up I couldn't put it down! Don Julin is an exceptional writer. He reaches, teaches and touches the reader. The book allowed me to vicariously experience the war-torn world of the 60's through Mr Julin's elequent voice. I grew up sheltered, never having to face what he and so many others experienced during that time. I'm very impressed at how Mr Julin so fearlessly opened himself up and shared his story. I have gained much insight into what actually occurred,and how it felt, while I was so protected at home. I feel the book will be cathartic and eye-opening for the reader and I'm grateful I had the opportunity to be so affected. I think it is a "must read" for all Baby Boomers, women sending loved ones off to Iraq and other far off places and those young people going to war. It's a must read!
