      Book Description

Although we seldom think of it, our lives are played out in a world of numbers. Such common activities as throwing baseballs, skipping rope, growing flowers, playing football, measuring savings accounts, and many others are inherently mathematical. So are more speculative problems that are simply fun to ponder in themselves--such as the best way to score Olympic events.

Here Robert Banks presents a wide range of musings, both practical and entertaining, that have intrigued him and others: How tall can one grow? Why do we get stuck in traffic? Which football player would have a better chance of breaking away--a small, speedy wide receiver or a huge, slow linebacker? Can California water shortages be alleviated by towing icebergs from Antarctica? What is the fastest the 100-meter dash will ever be run?

The book's twenty-four concise chapters, each centered on a real-world phenomenon, are presented in an informal and engaging manner. Banks shows how math and simple reasoning together may produce elegant models that explain everything from the federal debt to the proper technique for ski-jumping.

This book, which requires of its readers only a basic understanding of high school or college math, is for anyone fascinated by the workings of mathematics in our everyday lives, as well as its applications to what may be imagined. All will be rewarded with a myriad of interesting problems and the know-how to solve them.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the best applied mathematics problems around.......2002-07-06

If there is a better source of offbeat, interesting problems in applied mathematics, I have yet to see it. The closest is the similar book by Banks, Slicing Pizzas, Racing Turtles, and Further Adentures in Applied Mathematics. In this book, the first title problem concerns the engineering difficulties of towing icebergs from the polar regions to other locations in order to relieve water shortages. Complete in detail, it is a fascinating problem in engineering. The conclusion is that it can be done, and although it would be expensive, it does not involve any insurmountable problems. To me, the most amazing part was that the iceberg could be released several miles offshore and the inertia would allow it to literally coast to a stop in the desired location. Given the growing problems with the availability of fresh water, it appears that some day, we will see it happen.
As a lifelong baseball fan, I found the chapter on the trajectory of baseballs fascinating. The table of the different pitches, their average speed and rate of rotation is one of the most informative collections of data that I have ever seen. In my youth, I struggled to throw curves, sliders and knuckle balls. I did occasionally get them to work, but seeing the required combination of velocity and spin explains a great deal as to why I failed so often.
The chapter on the economic energy of a nation also held my interest. Using the formula for the kinetic energy of a particle as a model, Banks constructs a similar model based on the population and gross domestic product of a nation. The formula is

      E = ½ PG^2

While there is clearly a bit of poetic license being applied in the chapter, it does have many valid points and when the formula is applied to several economic entities, the results seem quite reasonable.
All teachers of mathematics are constantly in search of new problems to use in their courses. Students and instructors are collectively bored with the routine problems that seem to offer no new insights into what mathematics can be used for. In this book, you will find new uses for old mathematics that will make your creative hairs stand up straight.

3 out of 5 stars Fun and informative; some clumsy writing.......2001-01-05

Popular math books like this one, covering applied mathematics instead of pure, are a rarity. Banks has done a fair job of putting together interesting essays on various topics, though he's frankly not a very good writer.

His topics do a lot of the work for him, though. For example, he spends a couple of chapters on the engineering problems associated with towing and melting a large iceberg to provide fresh water. It's neat to watch him make his way through one question after another: what's the great-circle distance from the Antarctic to Los Angeles? When you stop towing it, how long till it coasts to a stop? How do you melt it? Can you get useful energy out of the heat difference between it and its surroundings? Banks' ease with numbers is contagious, and reading this one can see just how powerful applied mathematics is, and how many questions you can ask--and answer.

However, it's not for everyone. I have a pure maths degree, and am not particularly scared of a differential equation, but I found myself skimming the innumerable equations and calculations. Which is OK: you can just let your eyes glaze over at the symbols and still pick up the narrative. You'll get the idea of what can be done; you just won't really understand how. But this is not really a book to teach people who don't already know these techniques. It's a fun book if you already like maths, and a terrific book if you enjoy engineering calculations, but it's not likely to make many converts.

One extra point I'd like to make: a couple of times, Banks brings up a really interesting idea that highlights very effectively just how powerful and surprising mathematics can be. My favourite is the calculation of the economic energy of a nation, which is an offshoot of Banks' analysis of the success of smaller nations at getting Olympic medals (interestingly, Cuba is by far the most successful Olympic nation according to his numbers). Let P be a nation's population in millions, and G the gross domestic product in billions of US dollars. Then E, the economic energy of a nation, is (PG^2)/2, or one half times P times G squared. This is analogous in form to the standard equation for kinetic energy, with population substituted for mass, and GDP for velocity. Banks goes on to present a whole series of analogies between the two fields, and calculates comparisons of economic power, energy and momentum for the US, Europe and elsewhere. It's a fascinating excursion.

I've only given the book three stars, partly because Banks' style, while endearing, is awfully clunky, and partly because the book has such a very narrow appeal. But if you know what a differential equation is, if you think it's interesting to try out calculations and compare results, and particularly if you enjoy seeing just what the engineering mindset can do, you should give this a try.

5 out of 5 stars Adventures in applied mathematics.......1999-11-24

Mathematics has been called the universal language. After reading Bank's book you might believe it's so. Banks takes the reader on a whirlwind tour of mathematical applications to a broad range of every-day events and phenomena. In doing so he exposes the reader not only to some fun and interesting mathematics but also to a better appreciation of analysis and how broadly it applies to our lives.

As the title says, this is a book on applied mathematics. To read and enjoy it you need to understand basic integral calculus and solutions to differential equations. There's also a smattering of algebra, trigonometry, and geometry.

One of the first things I noticed about the book is the breadth and scope of the topics. Banks does not live in a single corner of the world, but has obviously striven to sample a wide variety of mathematical applications in some remote corners of the world. There is, as the cover suggests, a mathematical treatment of towing icebergs, complete with cost and structural engineering analysis. This happens relatively close to the beginning of the book. Nearer the end of the book Banks has a chapter devoted to the science of waves in falling dominoes. In between is a wide selection of other topics, including quite a bit on exponential growth, both limited and unlimited, and its applications to lots of natural systems including alligator eggs, GNP, and deficit spending.

Banks does more than simply describe physical problems and write down their differential equations. He also does a good job of explaining the phenomena. Nor do integrals and differential equations describe all the problems. A significant portion of the book, for example, is devoted to statistics and related things like curve fitting.

And he does not forget the social sciences, either. Banks touches on such subjects as how to start a football game, a better way to score the Olympics, how to calculate the economic energy of a nation, and how to reduce the population. I found these subjects quite interesting, though I think the linear curve fit he used in the section on scoring the Olympics stretches my imagination. [To me, the data look pretty random. Indeed, the correlation coefficient is only slightly more than 0.5 (see figure 8.1 and correlation coefficient after equation (8.1)). Still, Banks (as if driven by a preconceived objective) presses on and applies a linear regression from which he later derives key results for his scoring method.]

For the sports-minded among you Banks offers lots of examples of applied mathematics in the fields (pun intended) of baseball, golf, track, basketball, jumping rope, ski jumping, and the shot put. For example, did you know that a child jumping rope is swinging a curve called a troposkein? Furthermore, the troposkein is useful in vertical-axis wind turbines because the shape eliminates compression and bending forces. So the next time you see the kids jumping rope, tell them how to chant "one troposkein, two troposkein ..." instead. It will be an opportunity to teach them some mathematics as well as really impress their teachers.

Most of the sports examples involve problems with air. Air causes drag, which is usually a problem to be fought in sports, but it also causes lift, which can be either a problem (as in the hook and slice in your game of golf) or an advantage (as in your curve or knuckle ball in baseball). I particularly enjoyed the discussion of aerodynamics and its application to ski jumping. Seriously, this is one book you want to read before the next Olympics.

There are also brief forays into architecture, meteorites, and wave phenomena. Do you know why the Eiffel Tower looks the way it does? How about the Gateway arch in Saint Louis? If not, you can find the answers in chapter 13. Want to know when to run for cover if a large meteor is heading our way? Then read chapters 4 and 5. Ever wonder why a tsunami causes widespread destruction on land but does not seem to be even noticed by ships at sea? Then you won't want to miss chapter 21.

The constant theme throughout this book (though Banks never states it explicitly) is that mathematics is the universal language. Through its magic we understand and control our world.

In addition to being a great book for subject and clarity, the book also has a nice presentation. The equations are all numbered. Failure to number equations was a complaint I had about "The Story of root minus one," by Paul J. Nahin (Nahin, by the way, is quoted on the back cover). Banks is also a walking treasure chest of other references. If any of the subjects he touches upon interest you, then run (don't walk) to the bibliography. You will find lots of references there for further (usually more detailed) discussions and treatments of the subjects Bank's covers. The book is also pretty accurate. I found only minor typographical errors like the missing equal sign in equation (19.6) and a typo on table 20.2.

Another thing I liked about the book is the way Banks leaves lots of the derivations to the reader. Sometimes these derivations involve a page or two of scribbles (like the one for equation 17.22). The book also has problems and suggested research topics for students. This would be a great idea book for students in mathematics, physics, and engineering. About the only complaint I have is that the book's index is miserly. Use lots of yellow markers, dog-ear the pages, and you may want to have some sticky notes around as well when you read it.

So, if you love mathematics and especially applied mathematics I highly recommend this book. I guarantee you will enjoy it.

      Book Description

Many who saw the 1990 Hollywood movie Memphis Belle think they know the story. But the real story had nothing to do with the movie-and it is told for the first time here, by the pilot who lived it. An emotionally moving tale, and a heartbreaking love story, this is an unforgettable memoir of a man who was born into a life of ease-and tested in the hardship of war.

"Bring[s] a new perspective to World War II literature. Written in a chatty style that is easy and exciting to read, this book is recommended." (Library Journal)

"A book that needed to be written while the best man to write it still could." (Booklist)

5 out of 5 stars A Complex Friend, Terrific Read.......2007-02-22

Bob Morgan was a friend of mine. His lovely wife urged him for years to write a book, yet he always seemed to sluff it off. At speaking engagements, he always pointed out that he was no hero, giving full credit to the other members of his crew, and the many other crews that flew the skies of Europe. Very typical of his generation, and traits that later ones seem to have lost. The crew of the Memphis Belle was thrust into fame by accident, circumstance, chance, or whatever fate chose, much like the flag raisers of Iwo Jima. It forever changed their lives to some extent. Bob almost waited too long to write this, and he couldn't have found a better co-author than award winning Ron Powers. Bob wasn't your average pilot in the air, there was this unruly side of him that was able to express itself somewhat before the bond tours, but certainly was turned loose afterwards. I remember once when he came by to see me and handed me a picture of him flying a B-17 at Oshkosh when he was well into his 70's. He'd run the plane down the runway in front of the crowd, then turned it on it's side, leaving the wing tip only slightly off the ground. Some things never changed. The book would be a great read just for his WWII and war bond experiences, but Bob was a unique individual, no actually a complex individual, and much to my surprise, he held nothing back in his book. Perhaps this is why he waited so late in life to do it, but I'm glad he did. This is probably the most honest and personal WWII memoir that you will ever read, and nothing was held back. The complexity and struggles of Bob as a man would have made this a fascinating book had he never sat at the controls of the Memphis Belle. But he did, and as a result, you get the unique insight into a very unique, and complex man, and this is the treat that you will come away with in this book, long after the story of the Memphis Belle.

2 out of 5 stars The Man who.......2006-04-23

All 8th Air Force veterans are heroes and special, few are self absorbed in their own life. This is a story that deserves to be told but the me, me, me gets in the way. Morgan loses his mother and spends the rest of his life trying to find her in a marriage. As far as the story, he still dodges the fact that Irl Baldwin and the 303rd Bomb Group B-17 `Hell's Angels' was the first to fly 25 missions in the European Theatre of Operations. Good book but would have been better without such a self centered perspective. Not everyone came back from the ETO, we will remember them.

5 out of 5 stars The life and times of the first American pilot in WWII to survive 25 missions over Europe.......2005-10-18

For those who may not know: In the early days of World War II the United States had no long range fighters capable of protecting our bombers all the way to their European targets. Even so, and unlike the British who flew only night bombing raids which were much safer but largely ineffective, the American fliers were tasked to continue flying higher precision yet much more dangerous daylight missions. As a consequence, the attrition rate for American bombers and their crews was grimly and almost unacceptably high. To bolster morale, a policy was initiated such that any bomber crewman completing twenty-five missions without being shot down and captured or killed would be relieved of duty and returned to the United States. The "Memphis Belle" was the first bomber to successfully achieve that milestone.

Having heard about the Memphis Belle for most of my life, I was curious to read the real story of that famed B-17 and its equally famous 25th mission, particularly from the standpoint of the bomber's pilot. I wasn't disappointed. In fact, the story went far beyond that bomber and its mission and was much more interesting. For through the eyes of the book's author you could almost sense what it was like to experience his life and times and know what it was REALLY like to actually pilot a B-17 into combat. . . Ignore the German fighters. Don't drift. Ignore the flack. Don't let your mind wander. Keep your eyes fixed straight ahead. Keep your plane in formation. Try to relax. Don't let your wings touch. Bomber pilots apparently had a very narrow view of the war.

The remarkable thing to me about the book, however, was that Robert Morgan wrote it quite late in his life. To me, that broadened his perspective, lending much more insight to the story. In fact, I don't think a young Captain Morgan could have written a book with such clarity, honesty, perspective and sensitivity. Bottom line: This is a very good book and not just from a historical point of view.

      5 out of 5 stars What a Life!.......2005-06-20

This is a grand story of a B-17 Flying Fortress in the 8th Air Corps early days bombing France and Germany in WW II. More than that, it is the autobiography of one of the most interesting men I have ever encountered. The MEMPHIS BELLE was one of the first planes and crews to complete 25 missions and come home to thank Americans for their home front efforts.

4 out of 5 stars Amazingly frank and personal autobiography.......2003-12-25

Leaving aside the question of historical accuracy (this has been touched on ably by another reviewer) except for one comment - I was a little unconvinced by Morgan's soliloquy's on WW II grand strategy, such as his explanations of how the war in Russia was fought, and other things that he as a 23-25 year old bomber pilot would have known little about and perhaps cared even less. These parts of the book come across as forced.

Having said that, however, I have no doubt Morgan felt them necessary to put the overall story into context, and they do that well. This makes the book perfect for youngsters or those with no understanding of the larger picture of WW II history, and thus provide this with a broader appeal.

But the meat of the story is Morgan himself. This is not "just" a story of a WW II bomber pilot, this is a wonderfully told story of Bob Morgan, the man, and a blushingly honest discussion of his many demons - his relationship with his departed mother, his father and siblings, his girlfriends, fiancees and wives, his crew (many of whom were fast friends), his superiors, and a terrific look at how he grew up, trained for war, matured as a commander, lived as a returning veteran, and overcame the evils of a pampered upbringing, and learned the value of hard work.

The details about his tour with the 8th Bomber Command were especially interesting, and his revelations about the WW II documentary about his aircraft will answer many questions for ardent Memphis Belle fans who always wondered how much of the 1943 documentary was real (apparently, not much), and also records what Morgan thought of the 1990 film with Matthew Modine (apparently, not much).

His tour in B-29s is also well discussed. This is very much a terrific human interest story which just happens to take place in flak-filled skies. It's certainly more Twelve O'Clock High, with its introspection, than it is Monte Merrick's Memphis Belle, with its cartoon heroics.

Colonel Morgan is to be commended for his bravery in baring his soul to the rest of us, for trying to make sense of his life in a way that we can all learn, for admitting to the hurt he has caused others, and allowing us to relate to his own hurts. He was a courageous man at 23 - he had to be - but now, of his own accord, I think he is even braver in his 80s for writing this thoroughly inspirational book.

Thus far I've been a fan of Ms. Hampton but she lost me on this one. Once you can't get past the obvious lack of editing the story does hold your attention if you can get past the use of the word Moreso over and over. The character returns to the same ol' thing he was jailed for. In summary, same story, same character same ending.

I am a huge fan of Brenda M. Hampton, I have enjoyed reading all of her books Jaylins still my MAN! I have had mixed feelings about this one. I enjoyed it, but it didn't have that RUSH that Brenda is know to give me. The first part of this book How Can I Be Down..I loved that one. In this book I felt Brenda really didn't know what to do with Kiley so she kept him in a bunch of un-necessary drama. And Candi that's what you get. I just can't wait to see what Brenda has in store for us next.

5 out of 5 stars NOTHING LESS THAN THE BEST.......2005-08-19

Brenda gives us nothing less than the best as she always does in No Justice No Peace. What can I say? If you have read her other novels then you know every book she writes is the bomb. I thought that I would be crying to hard over the ending of Jalin's novels to really get emotionally involved with Kiley, but I was so wrong. Brenda weaves a web of sex, love, hustling, murder, family bonds, and then some in this novel. I truly loved it. Brenda Hampton is the best author out there. I am speechless right now. (Now I must say, that normally, I am really outspoken, so for a "book" to have me speechless is saying a lot..) I am a HUGE Brenda Hampton fan, and with this book she did not disappoint. Mrs. Hampton, you are my #1 author. Keep up the good work. I will read them as quick as you write them girl!

Anyway, This book definitely had me speechless..The first book, "How can I be down?" was good, but the sequel was definitely better. I loved this book from start to finish, but Kiley, wow, what can I say? He wasn't the best man a woman could want, but he "had me at hello"..lol..

I loved his character. I loved how strong he was, but most of all how much he cared for his son. I really appreciate Mrs. Hampton for showing that brothas are by no means "perfect", and they are capapable of loving and caring for their children.

I won't give the book away, but the end had me in tears. I was so glad it ended the way it did. Get this book, or any book by Mrs. Hampton, you won't be disappointed!!

If you read this Mrs. Hampton, know that I appreciate your work and believe I ALWAYS get my money's worth!

        Much Love!.

                        Book Description

No Justice, No Peace is the shocking true story of three young Black men who were the victims of one of the most heinous instances of police brutality in Western Pennsylvania history.

Usually police cases like this one are swept under the rug. Or, if they are contested, the police usually walked away from it. But not this time. Leon Grey, the father of one of the youths, was so outraged by the beating his son Devon and Devon's two cousins took from the Clairton policed that we waged a four year battle in pursuit of justice. It was a crusade that would take Grey to the FBI, a federal Grand Jury, the courthouse, the streets, the edge of despair...and finally, the pinnacle of joy.
