4 out of 5 stars Antebellum Natchez.......2005-09-14

Natchez is such a magical place and this book does a fine job of capturing what makes this town special. The photographs by Gleason are wonderful and the text gives you just the right amount of backstory. It is amazing that this place has survived almost totally intact from the time of the Civil War. Visiting Natchez really does feel like walking through history and this book is the next best thing to being there. If you have any interest in the Old South or beautiful Civil War era mansions, or just fine photography, then you will enjoy this book.

Book Description

Must See Mississippi: 50 Favorite Mississippi Places is a fifty-site tour through the Magnolia State's historic locales, ranging from the graceful swinging bridge at Tishomingo State Park to the Biloxi Lighthouse, a miraculous survivor of Hurricane Katrina. Each locale contributes a unique piece of the state's rich and multilayered story, told in Mary Carol Miller's text and more than one hundred full-color photographs by Mary Rose Carter.

The book traces the region's history across several centuries, from the sunken paths of the Natchez Trace, winding through ominously quiet corners of Claiborne County, to the Greek Revival mansions and courthouses of the antebellum era. Author and photographer explore the remains of the long-lost Natchez tribe's Grand Village, as well as Gothic churches, imposing college chapels, and cabins of the Neshoba County Fair. Natural treasures also abound with trips to Point Leflore, the gardens of Monmouth and Walter Place, and the towering oaks of Greenwood's Grand Boulevard.

Selected by the author and photographer after more than a decade of roaming the highways and back roads of Mississippi, these fifty sites represent the best of a fascinating state.

          Book Description

Recent discussions about the culture of images have focused on issues of identity--sexual, racial, national--and the boundaries that define subjectivity. In this context Victor Burgin adopts an original critical strategy. He understands images less in traditional terms of the specific institutions that produce them, such as cinema, photography, advertising, and television, and more as hybrid mental constructs composed of fragments derived from the heterogeneous sources that together constitute the "media." Through deft analyses of a photograph by Helmut Newton, Parisian cityscapes, the space of the department store, a film by Ousmane Sembéne, and the writings of Henri Lefebvre, Andrè Breton, and Roland Barthes, Burgin develops an incisive theory of our culture of images and spectacle.
In/Different Spaces explores the construction of identities in the psychical space between perception and consciousness, drawing upon psychoanalytic theories to describe the constitution and maintenance of "self" and "us"--in imaginary spatial and temporal relations to "other" and "them"--through the all-important relay of images. For Burgin, the image is never a transparent representation of the world but rather a principal player on the stage of history.

5 out of 5 stars An invaluable contribution to visual culture.......2000-06-20

Burgin's book is a wonderful contribution to the growing field of visual culture. His examinations of Helmut Newton are beyond reproach, and his ability to link aesthetic experiences with the development of social consciousness (using, among others, theorists Lacan and Mulvey) is impressive. All delivered with good humor and supplemented by personal anecdote, this book is absolutely vital for anyone interesting in visual culture.

            Book Description

Most books about cinema, whether popular or academic, concentrate on what we might call the "inside" of the film: from star performances to narrative structures. The relatively few books about the "outside" of films speak mainly of such aspects of production and reception as the organization of the film industry and the sociology of audiences: the Hollywood studio system, for example, or fan clubs. The Remembered Film is unique in addressing a previously overlooked aspect of cinema: the isolated fragments of films, iconic images or scenes, that fleetingly cross our perceptions and thoughts in the course of everyday life.Victor Burgin examines a kaleidoscope of film fragments drawn from a variety of media, the internet, memory and fantasy. Among these are sequences of such brevity they might almost be stills. Such "sequence-images", as Burgin calls them, are neither strictly "image" nor "image sequence" and have not been considered before by either film or photography theory. He also considers some typical individual experiences "sampled" from mainstream cinema. He reflects on such disparate occurrences as the association in memory of fragments from otherwise unrelated films, of the relation of a recollected film image to an architectural setting, or of a feeling "marked" by an image remembered from a film. The Remembered Film provides a radical new way of thinking about film outside conventional cinema, and in relation to our everyday lives. It will appeal to a wide audience interested in film and media.

              Book Description

Over the past 30 years, Victor Burgin (born in 1941) has become both a highly influential artist and a renowned theorist of the still and moving image, with work in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art, New York and the Tate Modern in London. Burgin rose to prominence in the late 1960s as an originator of Conceptual art. In the 1970s he worked in large framed photographic sequences, in which printed texts were either juxtaposed with or superimposed on the images. In the 1990s he turned towards digital video. The historian and critic Stephen Bann has written that Burgin's "exploitation of new technologies is itself fairly uninteresting compared with the remarkable consistency of the underlying themes and propositions of his work," among them narrative, memory and fantasy. These duotones refute all that uninteresting technology to offer Burgin's reflections on Pompeii, gleaned through his research of nineteenth-century photographs.

A captivating meditation on the nature of cities and how we see ourselves in relation to them. Written in travelogue form, this marvelous text is presented beside the authors own black-and-white photographs. Victor Burgin, a professor on the Board of Studies in History of Consciousness at the University of California, documents his travels from his native England to London, Berlin, New York, Singapore, and the islands of Stromboli and Tobago. When we see through Burgin's eyes, our relationships to the cities we know are gently transformed to the point that we may even view them as works of art.

              Book Description

"Our relations with cities are like our relations with people. We love them, hate them, or are indifferent toward them. On our first day in a city that is new to us, we go looking for the city. We go down this street, around that corner. We are aware of the faces of passers-by. But the city eludes us, and we become uncertain whether we are looking for a city, or for a person."Victor Burgin recalls some of the cities he has known in a way familiar to all who have traveled, by showing photographs and telling anecdotes. Some Cities gathers places and moments along a life route that the author has taken from the north of England to his present home in northern California. Stops on the way include such disparate sites as London, Berlin and Warsaw; Singapore, Woomera and Tokyo; New York and San Francisco; and the islands of Stromboli and Tobago. Some Cities is unlike anything Burgin has ever done before, although it explores characteristic themes of his earlier theoretical and visual works, such as the dimensions of politics and sexuality in everyday life."Burgin traces his life's route from the north of England through such metropolises as London, Berlin, Singapore, Tokyo, New York and San Francisco in brilliant black and white photographs and in anecdotes presented in immaculate prose."—The Guardian"a witty, poignant and evocative personal travelogue"—The Independent on Sunday

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful marriage of photographs and text........2000-06-20

Photographer and cultural theorist Victor Burgin puts his two talents to good use in this book. Some Cities combines Burgin's thoughts on the way cities live in our consciousness with photographs he has taken in cities to striking effect. Burgin clearly loves his subject. A fine addition for anyone who has enjoyed Burgin's theory (see, for example, "The End of Art Theory") and would like to see how he applies them toward his own artistic expression. Very highly recommended.

                              Book Description

This innovative book uses a little-known methodological research tool to study ordinary people doing extraordinary things.

Local Exchange Trading Systems (LETS), the subject of the book, is a novel and interesting social phenomenon which seems to constitute a more ecologically rational and socially inclusive form of economic activity. LETS is a system for exchanging goods and services without the use of formal, legal tender. Unlike barter, LETS members buy and sell using their own nominal currency units, but the currency in which trade is conducted is purely a means of exchange, not a commodity in itself or a store of value.

The authors of this book examine LETS in detail, and in particular they discuss whether LETS can be viewed as an aspect of the 'greening' of citizenship, with the potential to contribute to the transition to, and maintenance of, a more sustainable society. They describe the part LETS can play in raising environmental awareness; offering more sustainable practices of production and consumption and helping to create in the community the preconditions for sustainability.

In their study of LETS, the authors use Q methodology (a qualitative methodology for the systematic study of subjectivity and shared discourses) and evaluate its usefulness for social scientific environmental research. They find that it is a powerful methodological approach consistent with many of the core principles, values and aims of ecological economics. They also conclude that Q has the potential to contribute to environmental policy analysis and the creation of a more participative, democratic and effective form of environmental policy making.

This book will be of great interest to all social scientists interested in social movements, environment and citizenship, and in particular those wanting to understand the application of Q methodology for social science research.
