    Book Description

This new electronic textbook introduces chemistry students to the world of orbitals using 3D and VRML representation of molecular orbitals. The electronic components of the book are included - together with the necessary representation tools - in the CD-ROM accompanying the book. A short introduction to the basic chemistry and physics of orbitals enables the reader to use the VRML world of orbitals on the CD successfully. The CD-ROM itself contains an extended interactive textbook and a broad selection of classical organic compounds and inorganic complex ligands including their orbitals. In several demonstrations, the student may interactively alter relevant parameters and watch the change in the orbitals' characteristics or take a walk through the 3D-VRML representations of the orbitals.

      Book Description

This book deals with several aspects of what is now called "explicit number theory." The central theme is the solution of Diophantine equations, i.e., equations or systems of polynomial equations which must be solved in integers, rational numbers or more generally in algebraic numbers. This theme, in particular, is the central motivation for the modern theory of arithmetic algebraic geometry. In this text, this is considered through three of its most basic aspects.

The first is the local aspect: one can do analysis in p-adic fields, and here the author starts by looking at solutions in finite fields, then proceeds to lift these solutions to local solutions using Hensel lifting. The second aspect is the global aspect: the use of number fields, and in particular of class groups and unit groups. The third aspect is the theory of zeta and L-functions. This last aspect can be considered as a unifying theme for the whole subject, and embodies in a beautiful way the local and global aspects of Diophantine problems. In fact, these functions are defined through the local aspects of the problems, but their analytic behavior is intimately linked to the global aspects.

Much more sophisticated techniques have been brought to bear on the subject of Diophantine equations, and for this reason, the author has included 5 appendices on these techniques. These appendices were written by Henri Cohen, Yann Bugeaud, Maurice Mignotte, Sylvain Duquesne, and Samir Siksek, and contain material on the use of Galois representations, the superfermat equation, Mihailescu’s proof of Catalan’s Conjecture, and applications of linear forms in logarithms.

      Book Description

About the Author: Frederick Pearson has extensive experience in teaching map projection at the Air Force Cartography School and Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He developed star charts, satellite trajectory programs, and a celestial navigation device for the Aeronautical Chart and Information Center. He is an expert in orbital analysis of satellites, and control and guidance systems. At McDonnell-Douglas, he worked on the guidance system for the space shuttle. This text develops the plotting equations for the major map projections. The emphasis is on obtaining usable algorithms for computed aided plotting and CRT display. The problem of map projection is stated, and the basic terminology is introduced. The required fundamental mathematics is reviewed, and transformation theory is developed. Theories from differential geometry are particularized for the transformation from a sphere or spheroid as the model of the earth onto a selected plotting surface. The most current parameters to describe the figure of the earth are given. Formulas are included to calculate meridian length, parallel length, geodetic and geocentric latitude, azimuth, and distances on the sphere or spheroid. Equal area, conformal, and conventional projection transformations are derived. All result in direct transformation from geographic to cartesian coordinates. For selected projections, inverse transformations from cartesian to geographic coordinates are given. Since the avoidance of distortion is important, the theory of distortion is explored. Formulas are developed to give a quantitative estimate of linear, area, and angular distortions. Extended examples are given for several mapping problems of interest. Computer applications, and efficient algorithms are presented. This book is an appropriate text for a course in the mathematical aspects of mapping and cartography. Map projections are of interest to workers in many fields. Some of these are mathematicians, engineers, surveyors, geodicests, geographers, astronomers, and military intelligence analysts and strategists.

3 out of 5 stars A perspective of a person from the mathematical community........2004-07-06

I read most of this book. It is a self-contained and a reader-friendly book. It gives a lot of intuition and understanding. However, I must admit-for the sake of objectivity-that some computations lack mathematical rigour and some computations are incorrect. I hope that the author reads my comment...

4 out of 5 stars Excellent source book, numerious errors in the equations........1997-09-03

The only self contaned reference that I've come across which applies classical differential geometry to the map projection problem. However I found the equations in the book to be unreliable. I would be interested in second (corrected) edition.

        Book Description

Together with the authors' Volume I. C*-Theory, the two parts comprising Functional Differential Equations: II. C*-Applications form a masterful work-the first thorough, up-to-date exposition of this field of modern analysis lying between differential equations and C*-algebras. The two parts of Volume II contain the applications of the C*-structures and theory developed in Volume I. They show the technique of using the C*-results in the study of the solvability conditions of non-local functional differential equations and demonstrate the fundamental principles underlying the interrelations between C* and functional differential objects. The authors focus on non-local pseudodifferential, singular integral, and Toeplitz operators-with continuous and piecewise continuous coefficients-convolution type operators with oscillating coefficients and shifts, and operators associated with non-local boundary value problems containing transformation operators of an argument on the boundary. They build the symbolic calculus for all these classes of operators, use it to treat concrete examples of non-local operators, present the explicit computation of their Fredholmity conditions and the index formulae, and obtain a number of related results. Part 1: Equations with Continuous Coefficients and Part 2: Equations with Discontinuous Coefficients and Boundary Value Problems can each stand alone and prove a valuable resource for researchers and students interested in operator algebraic methods in the theory of functional differential equations, and to pure C*-algebraists looking for important and promising new applications. Together these books form a powerful library for this intriguing field of modern analysis.

            Book Description

The proper treatment and choice of the basic data structures is an important and complex part in the process of program construction. Algebraic methods provide techniques for data abstraction and the structured specification, validation and analysis of data structures. This volume originates from a workshop organized within ESPRIT Project 432 METEOR, An Integrated Formal Approach to Industrial Software Development, held in Mierlo, The Netherlands, September 1989. The volume includes five invited contributions based on workshop talks given by A. Finkelstein, P. Klint, C.A. Middelburg, E.-R. Olderog, and H.A. Partsch. Ten further papers by members of the METEOR team are based on talks given at the workshop. The workshop was a successor to an earlier one held in Passau, Germany, June 1987, the proceedings of which were published as Lecture Notes in Computer Science, Vol. 394.

              Book Description

This book, written in two volumes, is an introductory manual for Magma, a programming language designed for the investigation of algebraic, geometric and combinatorial structures, or "magmas". It presumes no knowledge of computer programming, and its examples are chosen to illustrate language and algorithmic features as simply as possible. Magma is a sophisticated tool for experimentation, education, and computer-aided proof, useful for both students and professional mathematicians.
Volume I explains the language and user environment in detail, whereas Volume II deals with the major algebraic, geometrical and combinatorial structures implemented in the system.

Historian Douglas Brinkley's insightful Tour of Duty covers John Kerry's heroic Vietnam service (where he won the Silver and Bronze Stars and three Purple Hearts) and the fervent antiwar campaign it eventually spawned. Born to Boston Brahmin heritage, the son of an American diplomat, John Forbes Kerry was a child of good fortune--an eventual Yalie whose personal hero (John Fitzgerald Kennedy) shared his initials. However, Kerry's privileged upbringing instilled in him not a sense of entitlement, but a burning sense of public service. Though equally obsessed and revulsed by the burgeoning Vietnam conflict, Kerry's sense of duty led him to enlist in the Navy (after graduating Yale), and then volunteer for training as captain of a Swift boat (small aluminum vessels that patrolled the coastal waters and narrow, dangerous tributaries of Vietnam's massive Mekong delta). Brinkley's meticulous research relies on Kerry's detailed wartime diaries, logs, and interviews, (published here for the first time) as well as a wealth of accounts of the Navy's first extensive "brown water" riverine campaign since the Civil War. Those harrowing months only deepened Kerry's antipathy to the war, and he returned to become one of the most articulate leaders of the Vietnam Veterans Against the War. Brinkley's account gives crucial human dimensions to a man whose seeming aloofness has long plagued him. With Americans again dying in a controversial war halfway around the world, one cannot help but wonder if Kerry will yet again be able to pose the haunting question first put to a Congressional panel thirty years ago: "How do you ask a man to be the last man to die for a mistake?" --Jerry McCulley

                      Book Description

Covering more than four decades, Tour of Duty is the definitive account of John Kerry's journey from war to peace. Written by acclaimed historian Douglas Brinkley, this is the first full-scale, intimate account of Kerry's naval career. In writing this riveting narrative, Brinkley has drawn on extensive interviews with virtually everyone who knew Kerry well in Vietnam, including all the men still living who served under him. Kerry also entrusted to Brinkley his letters home from Vietnam and his voluminous "War Notes" -- journals, notebooks, and personal reminiscences written during and shortly after the war. This material was provided without restriction, to be used at Brinkley's discretion, and has never before been published.

John Kerry enlisted in the Navy in February 1966, months before he graduated from Yale. In December 1967 Ensign Kerry was assigned to the frigate U.S.S. Gridley; after five months of service in the Pacific, with a brief stop in Vietnam, he returned to the United States and underwent training to command a Swift boat, a small craft deployed in Vietnam's rivers. In June 1968 Kerry was promoted to lieutenant (junior grade), and by the end of that year he was back in Vietnam, where he commanded, over time, two Swift boats. Throughout Tour of Duty Brinkley deftly deals with such explosive issues as U.S. atrocities in Vietnam and the bombing of Cambodia. In a series of unforgettable combat-action sequences, he recounts how Kerry won the Purple Heart three times for wounds suffered in action and was awarded the Bronze Star and the Navy's Silver Star for gallantry in action.

When Kerry returned from Southeast Asia, he joined the Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW), becoming a prominent antiwar spokesperson. He challenged the Nixon administration on Capitol Hill with the antiwar movementcheering him on. As Kerry's public popularity soared in April-May 1971, the FBI considered him a subversive. Brinkley -- using new information acquired from the recently released Nixon tapes -- reveals how White House aides Charles Colson and H. R. Haldeman tried to discredit Kerry. Refusing to be intimidated, Kerry started running for public office, eventually becoming a U.S. senator from Massachusetts. But he never forgot his fallen comrades. Working with his friend Senator John McCain, he returned to Vietnam numerous times looking for MIAs and POWs. By the time Bill Clinton was elected president in 1992, Kerry was the leading proponent of "normalization" of relations with Vietnam. When President Clinton officially recognized Vietnam in 1995, Kerry's three-decade-long tour of duty had at long last ended.

                      4 out of 5 stars A Well-Researched, Thoroughly Documented View of A True Hero.......2006-03-30

Having already proven himself to be one of our best biographers today, with his books on Dean Acheson, JFK, FDR, Jean Monnet, James Forrestal, Henry Ford, Rosa Parks, and others, Douglas Brinkley has done it again with a terrific look at the truth behind an American veteran, politician and lifelong public servant.

Only the ignorant and openly biased will dismiss this highly-detailed examination of John Kerry's war experience, from growing up in Denver and his education at Yale through to his trials, triumphs, and ultimate disgust with the Vietnam War. Any questions you have about Kerry's character or his military service - especially those invented by political opponents who instead backed a corrupt coward named W - you'll find the answers right here.

If you value truth over hype and courage over self-serving cronyism, you'll enjoy this book.

This book along with the book by George Butler is so full of crap and hype about Kerry that it makes me laugh. Should be listed as fiction and would make for a great novel. Everybody who really knows Kerry laughs whenever mention of this book is brought up.

Those who knew Kerry back in 1966-67 knew how much he wanted to prevent being drafted and stay out of the service. Kerry claiming to be a war hero is like Michael Moore claiming to be an athlete. Give me a break!

1 out of 5 stars Happy Anniversary Americans!.......2005-12-09

It was just a little over 13 months ago that Americans flushed this john and voted for leadership. We didn't buy into the lies or false claims of heroism perpetrated by Kerry and writers like Brinkley who rely on their subject for facts (fat chance)

The economy is moving well. Iraq is moving well regardless what Kerry says. This Kerry promotional piece did not work and thank God for that.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY AMERICANS! WE ALL "FLUSHED THE JOHNS IN 2004!"

                      1 out of 5 stars Kerry's X-Mas '68 in Cambodia LIE has him spending X-Mas '05 in Boston........2005-12-09

Just one of the many lies i n this book overlooked (????) by Douglas Brinkley was Kerry supposedly in Cambodia in 1968 and havinga telephone conversation with Pres. Nixon. HINT: Johnson was the president in 1968, not Nixon.

To read this book 'TOUR OF DUTY', you'd swaer that Kerry was a real life Rambo when in fact, Kerry was more concerned with carrying around 8mm cameras and old fashioned and heavy Smith-Corona typewritters layingt he foundation for his future presidential campaign.

In another regard, what happened to that BIG DRAFT KERRY said was goingt o happen in January 2005? And the reduced social security benefits? And the Herbert Hoover economy? These were just some of the lies that Kerry repeated over and over and over during his failed presidential campaign in 2004.

But what really happened? There was no draft and 2005 is nearly over. Our seniors got a raise, not a cut in social security benefits and all economic factors show that the economy is doing just great thank you.

Are you all glad that Kerry got whipped last year? Say yes.

5 out of 5 stars Great book by a truly accomplished author.......2005-11-21

I found the book refreshing after hearing so many negative things about John Kerry's war service. It's so sad the way some of these far right people writing reviews believe all of the propaganda by their "party". Discrediting his service is a joke. I mean sure, he wasn't the best soldier our country has ever seen, but just compare him to Bush and it makes him look extremely good. Bush can hardly form a sentence (at his age) and Kerry was performing great anti war speeches at a much younger age. As for one of his purple hearts being earned by a self inflicted injury, thats just preposterous, that is not how it works and I think people know that but choose to to believe it. Bottom line is Kerry wouldn't have been the greatest president we have ever seen, but it would have been nice to see someone holding office that actually had served in a war. He might actually have thought twice about sending kids to die. The swift boat vets for "truth" were only one side of the story, and even if some of the things they said were true, obviously the people the Brinkley interviewed with would know better than most of the "truth vets" as they had actually served WITH Kerry, which is different than serving in the same general area.

Ah yes, John Kerry's life written by none other than.... John Kerry. The Kerry simpletons might find this intriguing, but one should be careful to note that throughout this entire book, there is not a single interview with any of Kerry's peers or commanding officers. Nor is there any interview with the medical personnel that "dressed" Kerry's famous battle wounds. I challenge you to read what other Vietnam Veterans have to say about Kerry's life and times in Vietnam, and I will assure you that he behaved anything but honorably.

I salute Senator John Kerry for serving time in Vietnam. He put his life in danger for the sake of his countrymen. He is a real hero and very patriotic in this country... Senator John Kerry is FIT to be the COMMANDER IN CHIEF of America...

There was Unfit for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out Against John Kerry, now there's this book. This book is the 'authorized version.' It is based on letters Kerry wrote home and 'extensive interviews with virtually everyone who knew Kerry in Vietnam.'

I turned first to the story of Kerry's first Purple Heart. The versions in the two books can't possibly cover the same person. In one Kerry is in a fire fight at night and trying to clear his jammed M-16 when he feel a hot, burning thing hit his arm. In the other it is daylight and Kerry shoots a grenade launcher at a rock some distance from his boat and a piece of shrapnel comes back and hits him in his arm. Well, at least they both agree that he was hit in the arm. This is the incident, I understand, where the official Navy records are missing.

The essence of democracy is an informed electorate. I'm intend to vote in about five days. Somehow I don't feel very informed.

If you're a Kerry fan, this is clearly the book you need to read, it'll make you feel much better. If you're a Bush fan, you may want to read it just to see what the Kerry fans are saying. If you're trying to inform yourself about the character of this man, you probably should read both.

One final comment, I was out of the Army before Vietnam got started going good. I've only known two people that were in Swift boats, they both hate Kerry. My guess is that Brinkley didn't talk to them.

2 out of 5 stars Better ways to understand the men who fought in SEA .......2004-10-21

To understand Vietnam, it is important to see the human factors. John Kerry dehumanized all Vietnam veterans by accusing them -- across the board -- of war crimes and atrocities. His actions defamed a generation of brave young men whose only crime was caring enough for their country to serve in an unpopular war. Reading about John Kerry will NOT help you find the humanity of Vietnam. Reading about Mike Jackson WILL. Naked In Da Nang (Zenith Press 2004) gives a truly unique perspective on the conflict and the men who fought and died for it. It offers an optimistic view of our Vietnam veterans and tells a vivid coming of age story that even non-military types can relate to. Jackson's wry humor and hard-won wisdom make him seem both blunt and disarming. He shies away from political statements and focuses instead on the personal dynamics of military training, espirit de corps and life in a combat zone. I agree with the above reviewer who understands that the legacy of Vietnam is not found in political rangling or second-guessing. The legacy of Vietnam is found in the human experience of the men who fought there -- and lived to talk, laugh and reflect on it. Naked In Da Nang does all that and more. THERE'S the real story on Southeast Asia.

1 out of 5 stars To see the real Vietnam try Naked In Da Nang.......2004-10-20

I don't care what you think of John Kerry -- war hero or traitor -- all you are going to get prior to November 2 is a pile of political mumbo jumbo targeted to the undecided voter. NOW, if you are interested in the REAL human perspective on the men who served in Vietnam, then Naked In Da Nang is the book you need to read. I have heard the authors speak and I have read the book -- twice. It is very simple in its presentation -- and very complex in all the images and emotions it stirs (especially for veterans.) You can read it and decide if it represents John Kerry's Vietnam or you can read Tour of Duty and contrast it with "Naked." Between these two men, I'd rather see Mike Jackson running for President -- but methinks he's a tad too smart for that! If you're interested in the TRUTH about the guys who fought and died in Vietnam, John Kerry is not the guy to consult.

                                    Book Description

Like many an exclusive club, the medical profession subjects its prospective members to rigorous indoctrination: medical students are overloaded with work, deprived of sleep and normal human contact, drilled and tested and scheduled down to the last minute. Difficult as the regimen may be, for those who don't fit the traditional mold--white, male, middle-to-upper class, and heterosexual--medical school can be that much more harrowing. This riveting book tells the tales of a new generation of medical students--students whose varied backgrounds are far from traditional. Their stories will forever alter the way we see tomorrow's doctors.
In these pages, a black teenage mother overcomes seemingly insurmountable odds, an observant Muslim dons the hijab during training, an alcoholic hides her addiction. We hear the stories of an Asian refugee, a Mexican immigrant, a closeted Christian, an oversized woman--these once unlikely students are among those who describe their medical school experiences with uncommon candor, giving a close-up look at the inflexible curriculum, the pervasive competitive culture, and the daunting obstacles that come with being "different" in medical school. Their tales of courage are by turns poignant, amusing, eye-opening--and altogether unforgettable.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful and Honest, Must read for anyone considering medical school........2007-09-04

Not just for minorities or those who have faced hardships on the road to becoming a doctor, this book paints a very realistic and (often) terrifying tales of students' worst experiences in medical school.

While it may seem intuitive that medical school is easier if you have financial support as well as a healthy personal and family life, not all of us are so lucky. This is a collection of stories from those who have found themselves in an unlucky position at one time or another. While most of them faced prejudices, the culture at medical schools has become more accepting; however, many challenges still remain. The most important part of the book is towards the end where a list of problems plaguing our medical school is outlined in a concise, clear manner. These issues are important whatever your race, creed or gender.

The face of healthcare is changing and our medical schools must change with it. The obstacles created by academic beaurocracy and an unforgiving system apply to all of us. I would heavily recommend this to anyone apply for or already in medical school.

I have read many books of this genre (medical school memoirs), and this is by far the worst. Kevin Takakuwa, listed as the main editor, uses this book as a forum to make a littany of excuses for his failure to pass medical school, and his inability to develop social connections and relationships while there. The remainder of the stories are more about how individuals coped with being a minority, either through race, religion, or disability. If you are looking for stories about surviving medical school, don't bother reading this one.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2006-12-21

This book was brilliant, amazing, and modern. It told the stories of untraditional medical school students. Medical school isn't just for middle-to-upper class white males anymore. That's a thing of the past. Now it is becoming more common to see females, minorities, and other groups of individuals in medical school.

There were 22 stories in this book, written by doctors who do not fit the middle-to-upper class white male profile. Stories by parents, alcoholics, homosexuals, women, minorities, and more. My favorite one is the closing story, the graduation speech. It's a medical school graduation speech that was never actually chosen to be read. It scared me so much...but at the same time, it challenged me, it made me want to be a doctor even more, to get through all of the obstacles that all the doctors before me have.

5 out of 5 stars Go get it!.......2004-09-20

Brilliant! As an immigrant, a person of color, and an economically unprivileged individual, I could relate to every single sentence in the book. Everyone interested in getting into medical school should read "What I Learned In Medical School", particularly those who might have faced roadblocks. The stories are inspirational and come from varied training physicians. All of them clearly show that hard work and perseverance will always triumph over poverty, stress, abuse, or any other obstacle known to man.

I have been in American hospitals before and have not been pleased with the under representation of some groups in the medical field. Hopefully, books like this one should inspire people to achieve the higher things; be it in medicine or anything else out there. I would put this book in every high school library. And if you are a parent, buy this book for your child now! Hopefully the face of medicine and academia will change. I am all for this book!

Some of the essays were touching, some were funny (like Holman's "Sometimes, All You Can Do Is Laugh"), and some even seemed a little silly to me ("A Prayer from a Closeted Christian"). But ALL the stories were touching. "A Case Presentation" was interestingly written. This book has something for everyone.

When you finish the book, you get a sense that the face of medicine in America is changing, albeit slowly. And you learn that physicians are human beings who also come with flaws and imperfections like all of us.

                                    Read it!
