    Book Description

With such a wide diversity of properties and applications, is it any wonder that industry and academia have such a fascination with polymers? A solid introduction to such an enormous and important field is critical to the modern polymer scientist-to-be, but most of the available books do not stress practical problem solving or include recent advances. Serving as the polymer book for the new millennium, Introduction to Polymer Science and Chemistry: A Problem Solving Approach unites the fundamentals of polymer science and polymer chemistry in a seamless presentation. Emphasizing polymerization kinetics, the author uses a unique question-and-answer approach when developing theory or introducing new concepts. The first four chapters introduce polymer science, focusing on physical and molecular properties, solution behavior, and molecular weights. The remainder of the book explores polymer chemistry, devoting individual, self-contained chapters to the main types of polymerization reactions: condensation; free radical; ionic; coordination; and ring-opening. It introduces recent advances such as supramolecular polymerization, hyperbranching, photoemulsion polymerization, the grafting-from polymerization process, polymer brushes, living/controlled radical polymerization, and immobilized metallocene catalysts. With numerical problems accompanying the discussion at every step along with numerous end-of-chapter exercises, Introduction to Chemical Polymer Science: A Problem Solving Approach is an ideal introductory text and self-study vehicle for mastering the principles and methodologies of modern polymer science and chemistry.

    5 out of 5 stars Author Discussion.......2002-11-17

I read the Reviewer's comments and appreciate his overall positive review. However, I feel it is necessary to clarify misconceptions regarding the basic physics material which is presented in the review.
The conservation equations that are presented do not mean a quantity such as heat is always conserved. As discussed in the text, there are sources and sinks of heat in the conservation of equation of heat that is presented. A conservation equation for motion is also just as appropriate as writing a conservation equation for momentum. We can write a conservation equation for any quantity, such as a trace gas (e.g. CO2). Source/sink terms can be accounted for in this mathematical framework.
The equations in the book are specifically written for the atmosphere, which is treated as an ideal gas. This is why the qualification is added in the text that the equations are for the atmosphere (and specifically the earth's atmosphere). The equations developed in the book from the first principle of thermodynamics are only appropriate for the earth's atmosphere, since the ideal gas equation for air is used.
The basic phyics text in Chapters 2 and 3 have been extensively reviewed by numerous students and others and has been found to be solidly based in fundamental concepts. The Reviewer did correctly find a typo in that the virtual temperature is greater than the actual temperature whenever water vapor is present. The inequality on page 8 was reversed but the text and the explanation in that paragraph are correct and should be clear to a reader.
Finally, I thank the reviewer for taking the time to complete the review. If there is a third Edition, I certainly will acknowledge that review.

    3 out of 5 stars Yes, but . . ........2002-01-10

(Revised after reviewer took course in etiquette). "Mesoscale Meteorological Modeling" is the new second edition of the flagship text in the field. It is reasonably priced and seems to be well organized, addressing a lot of important problems. Aside from the discussion of thermodynamics, Professor Pielke's book is lucid and coherent.

To make a more specific criticism, consider section 2.2,entitled "Conservation of Heat." For a start I might complain that heat is not something conserved in atmospheric processes. In the usual thermodynamic usage, heat means energy transferred through thermal processes, is not an exact differential, and is not conserved. I think he means conservation of energy, but why not say so? It gets worse before it gets better. To quote from the first paragraph: "The first law of thermodynamics for the atmosphere states that differential changes in heat content, dQ, are equal to the sum of the work performed by an object, dW, and differential changes in internal energy, dI."

The first law of thermodynamics is universal - applying equally to steam engines (in which context it was first identified) and black holes. The phrase "differential changes in heat content" is nonsensical, since heat is energy transferred, not "contained" energy. The word differential is not only vague but also unnecessary. It would have been more accurate to say that the heat transferred into a system is equal to the sum of the work performed by the system and the increase in the internal energy of the system.

On page 8, he says that the virtual temperature is less than or equal to the sensible temperature, but the opposite is in fact true. On the same page, I found his attempt to discuss perfect differentials confused and confusing. There is both a mathematical and a physical point involved here. The (thermodynamically interesting) perfect differentials are the total differentials of state variables. dQ is not such an exact differential, and that is why it is meaningless to talk about conservation of heat.

Another unfortunate line is "Internal forces are required to account for the dissipation of momentum by molecular motions." (page 16). This is misleading. Momentum is conserved - absolutely - and unlike energy is not usually converted ("dissipated") to a more inconspicuous form, like internal energy. The atmosphere can transfer momentum to other parts of itself, by pressure or friction, to the ocean or the solid Earth (again by friction) or even (in microscopic amounts, by tidal forces) to the sun and moon, but these should be considered external forces. I infer from the succeeding sentences that conversion of energy from one form to another was the point.

I could quibble about the fact that he confuses centripetal and centrifugal acceleration (page 14) or the fact that he for some obscure reason refers to conservation of momentum as "Conservation of Motion," but that might be excessively picky.

Despite this type of flaw, I think the book is potentially useful. Perhaps one should just skip the thermodynamics (and read about it some good elementary physics book, like Sears) and just read the part he apparently cares about - the modeling. Apparently this is as good as it gets on the subject of mesoscale modeling. In any case, I don't begrudge the money I spent on it - I learned some useful things about modeling coordinates in Chapter 6.

        Description:
The climate sensitivity to specification of agricultural and urban land cover was investigated using the climate version of the Pennsylvania State University/National Center for Atmospheric Research Mesoscale Model (MM5) for 1990 over northeastern United States. The simulations were for 5 yr at a spatial resolution of 36 km. Urbanization resulted in near-surface temperature increases of more than 1 K over the urban sites during both winter and summer. The increase in summer temperature due to urbanization was more widespread than that due to the effect of agricultural land use. The conversion of forest to agricultural land resulted in a decrease in temperature of more than 0.5 K during winter and an increase of more than 1 K during summer over the sites of perturbation. The reduced temperature during winter is related to snow cover. Agricultural lands are covered by snow while the trees in non-agricultural areas protrude through the snow, reducing the albedo of the surface. The warming during summer reflects reduced evaporation. Urbanization also reduces the diurnal temperature range (DTR) by about 0.4 K.

          Description:
On continental to regional scales feedbacks between landuse and landcover change and climate have been widely documented over the past 10-15 years. In the present study we explore the possibility that also vegetation changes over much smaller areas may affect local precipitation regimes. Large scale (~10^5 ha) irrigated plantations in semi-arid environments under particular conditions may affect local circulations and induce additional rainfall. Capturing this rainfall 'surplus' could then reduce the need for external irrigation sources and eventually lead to self-sustained water cycling. This concept is studied in the coastal plains in South West Saudi Arabia where the mountains of the Asir region exhibit the highest rainfall of the peninsula due to orographic lifting and condensation of moisture imported with the Indian Ocean monsoon and with disturbances from the Mediterranean Sea. We use a regional atmospheric modeling system (RAMS) forced by ECMWF analysis data to resolve the effect of complex surface conditions in high resolution (@Dx=4 km). After validation, these simulations are analysed with a focus on the role of local processes (sea breezes, orographic lifting and the formation of fog in the coastal mountains) in generating rainfall, and on how these will be affected by large scale irrigated plantations in the coastal desert. The validation showed that the model simulates the regional and local weather reasonably well. The simulations exhibit a slightly larger diurnal temperature range than those captured by the observations, but seem to capture daily sea-breeze phenomena well. Monthly rainfall is well reproduced at coarse resolutions, but appears more localized at high resolutions. The hypothetical irrigated plantation (3.25 10^5 ha) has significant effects on atmospheric moisture, but due to weakened sea breezes this leads to limited increases of rainfall. In terms of recycling of irrigation gifts the rainfall enhancement in this particular setting is rather insignificant.

                    Book Description

Fighter pilot Butch O'Hare became one of America's heroes in 1942 when he saved the carrier Lexington in what has been called the most daring single action in the history of combat aviation. In fascinating detail the authors describe how O'Hare shot down five attacking Japanese bombers and severely damaged a sixth and other awe-inspiring feats of aerial combat that won him awards, including the Medal of Honor. They also explain his key role in developing tactics and night-fighting techniques that helped defeat the Japanese.

In addition, the authors investigate events leading up to O'Hare's disappearance in 1943 while intercepting torpedo bombers headed for the Enterprise. First published in 1997, this biography utilizes O'Hare family papers and U.S. and Japanese war records as well as eyewitness interviews. It is essential reading for a true understanding of the development of combat naval aviation and the talents of the universally admired and well-liked Butch O'Hare.

                    5 out of 5 stars Bob's Review.......2007-01-30

Well written into the life of "Butch" O'Hare and the tragedy of this hero's loss. This book will keep you intrigued from start to finish from Butch's early life, family life, and his military life. Well documented and is a must read for the military historian.

5 out of 5 stars A Riveting Story of One of America's First Aces.......2002-09-11

Authors Ewing and Lundstrom have done an excellent job of telling the story of Butch O'Hare. Born in March, 1914 and raised in St. Louis, Butch loved the simpler things in life. He enjoyed spending time with his father hunting or fishing, or playing with his younger sisters. Family was always important to Butch, and the authors do a good job of stressing this throughout the book. Butch eventually left St. Louis and attend Annapolis, graduating in 1937. Butch's first assignment was aboard the battleship New Mexico, and he quickly developed an affection for the ship's float planes. After serving aboard the New Mexico, Butch signed up for flight training and was stationed at Pensacola, Florida. There, Butch earned his wings.

Butch's most famous flight occurred on February 20, 1942. Butch was on board the carrier Lexington when a group of Japanese torpedo planes attacked the task force. Butch scrambled his F4F Wildcat fighter off the deck and rose to meet the enemy. In the span of about 5 minutes, Butch single-handedly shot down 6 of the attackers while saving the task force from certain damage. Butch was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Roosevelt at a ceremony at the White House. Afterward, Butch embarked on a war bond tour where he visited factories and gave rally speeches. While on a visit to Grumman, Butch was able to talk to designers about the limitations of the F4F. This input led to the development of the F6F fighter, which Butch would fly later in the war.

The authors do a good job of describing in great detail Butch's war days. I felt like I was flying right along with him. Particularly interesting was the detailed description of Butch's final flight. After attacking a group of Japanese planes, Butch's night fighter group was to regroup and head back to their carrier. However, a series of unconfirmed and sketchy events occurred which led to the death of Butch. Some people believe that Butch died as a result of friendly fire, while others believe that a snooping Japanese plane managed to get close enough to shoot Butch down without being detected. The authors claim the latter, and I agree with their assessment.

Butch O'Hare was a true war hero. His bravery and courage were shining examples to others, and his heroism was a true morale booster during the dark early days of the war. A replica of Butch's F4F stands in O'Hare airport, named for him, in Chicago. Read this excellent book and experience the life of a true American hero.

2 out of 5 stars Hagiographical biography of a hero.......1999-04-12

Having read Lundstrom's excellent First Team books, I was anxious to get my hands on this book which he co-authored. After the first fifty pages, though, I was beginning to wonder about the tune of the book; I had anticipated a bit more down-to-earth approach, but the authors opted for the "hero in the making" style. Actually, the only interesting bits are in the latter half of the book, when Butch finally gets into combat flying, and as is the case with all Lundstrom's combat books, the dogfight descriptions are absolutely great. Likewise, the account of the death of Butch O'Hare is excellent.

The problem is that they only fill about a fourth of the book. The rest is filled with hagiography, which I was surprised to find. After all, we have the book "Bader - the man and his men", giving a detailed account of England's O'Hare, Douglas Bader, minus the holy approach. It is possible to present the life of a true hero without superficial glamour, but Lundstrom and Ewing missed it here.

Another case in point is Blackburn and Hammel's "Jolly Rogers". There, too, a hero is given a thorough treatment, but there's no added sugar. Maybe it is because the authors are not accustomed to writing from this angle; I think I'll stick to their pure combat books.

5 out of 5 stars This is a must-read for naval aviation history buffs........1997-08-19

The authors obviously researched their subject quite thoroughly in preparation for this excellent piece of history. In my previous readings, Butch O'Hare has remained somewhat of an enigma. This book provides great insights into the man and his times. This is a great tribute to an American hero. 5 out of 5 stars One of the remaining mysteries of WWII solved........1997-03-06

John Lundstrom is one of the few, maybe the only current writer of US naval aviation history who can describe air to air combat and have it make sense. Fateful Rendezvous continues John's standing in that catagory of writer. His description of the fateful night in November is a masterwork of clarity. The movement of all the participants are put into context with each other and the US Task Force under attck.
Getting the context right is something both John and Steve do very well and it shows in this book. Steve's coverage of O'Hare's early years and the family's social standing, including the association with Al Capone are revealed with detail and a solid sense of the times. Those interested in Chicago and American social history between the wars will find Fateful Rendezvous brings a new perspective to that topic.
John places the events of O'Hare's Navy service in the greater context of the United State's preparation for and fighting in WWII. John also brings in the Japanese point of view as their tactics change in response to the increasing power of the USN in the Pacific.
Both authors are known for their attention to detail and strong sense of historical honesty. This book continues that tradition. Having read a pre-publication copy I can't wait to have a finished edition of Fateful Rendezvous on my shelf.

Love this book about the physician, Luke, who wrote the Gospel according to Luke. Fiction, yes, but such an accurate depiction of the human struggle for spiritual relevance and the rebellion of the human soul. The detail and depth of characters, the complex and rewarding plot and the historical accuracy make this one of the finest works ever done by any author, in my opinion. Rarely does reading the last page cause such a sigh of satifaction. I am buying another because I've loaned mine out so often.

5 out of 5 stars Martin Scorcese should make the movie.......2007-07-20

I'm surprised by how many reviewers read this book in high school. I think I read it in 8th grade. I also reread it within the last couple of years (over 40 years later). For me this book still had a great impact; I know I never forgot it. Caldwell was a great story teller and the forces at odds in Luke as he travels the road from angry nonbeliever practicing medicine in the Roman World to a man of faith who eventually writes his own gospel is a wonderful journey for the reader. I was pulled into his struggle like I have been in few other books. So the book stayed with me, but the second time I read it, I thought it would make a great movie directed by Martin Scorcese. I remembered his Last Temptation of Christ from the late 70's. I've tried to find a way to contact Scorcese to encourage him to do the movie, but was unsuccessful. If anyone reading this can get through to him, you might suggest it would be a great opportunity for him... (I think Leonardo Decaprio would make a great Luke). Anyway, the book is currently out of print; if somebody would republish it, I'd give it to everyone I know. The used editions have actually gotten a little pricey. But, I encourage everyone to read the book. On many levels, it's a great read. Finally, one of the best and most moving parts of the book is when Luke interviews the Virgin Mary and the Apostle John for his gospel; coming near the end of the book, these episodes raise the book above conventional historical fiction and make it somehow a spiritual reading experiance.

2 out of 5 stars Aryanization of Biblical characters.......2005-05-28

Like the previous reviewer, I too read this book in high school and have just re-read it, 30 years later. It has not aged well, to me at least. It is the fictional story of St. Luke, the Greek apostle and author of one of the 4 gospels, whom St. Paul called "my dear physician Luke". Luke's gospel and the Acts of the Apostles, which he is credited with writing, are two of my favorite books of the Bible so I was looking forward to re-reading Caldwell's fictional portrayal of Luke and his times. There are some things about it that are interesting; in particular, Caldwell did a lot of research about ancient medicine and that added quite a bit to the story. However ... I found a rather distressing tendency towards what I call the "Aryanization" of the characters--that is, Christ, Mary, and Luke himself are all blue-eyed blondes, and many of the "good" characters in the book are also blue-eyed and/or blonde. It detracted enormously from any sense of historical authenticity, which I feel good historical novels should have. Also, on a couple of occasions Luke (called Lucanus in the novel) airs his political views and contrasts Rome, with its messy democracy and smelly mobs, to Greece, where things were run by an educated and aristocratic elite who clearly ought to be running the show. I greatly dislike it when writers use characters as a mouthpiece for political or social views that clearly reflect the author's personal opinions. There is also quite a bit of ham-handed foreshadowing, and as I don't want to give anything away I won't go into details. Suffice to say that Caldwell constantly is dropping characters into Lucanus' path who then turn up 200 pages later at key points in the plot. It is quite difficult to write realistic novels about Biblical characters, I know, but I was really surprised, and saddened, at how badly 'Dear and glorious physician' has aged.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful journey into the past........2004-02-26

I first read this book over 20 years ago while attending a private catholic college and studying nursing. It had a profound effect upon me then and continues to move me to this very day. Ms. Caldwell's soaring prose and well researched knowlege of medicine in biblical times draw one into the world of Luke the gospel writer and keep you there. This book brings the like of Luke and the life of the Christ home to the reader and encourages one the reach farther and look further. It deepened my faith . With all the fuss concerning Mel Gibson's new film "The Passion of the Christ" it is good to read something that brings you a greater understanding of the sacrifice made for us without the visually distressing pictures.

This book is REALLY awesome. I like how Taylor makes St. Luke ( Lucanus) like a real person instead of some holy guy that you can't relate yourself to. It's full of Israelites, Romans, and Lucanus' quest to find who he is and what God calls him to do. It's truely hard to put down and is a beautiful story. I'm 13 and I reccomend this book to kids my age and up. If you want a really good book to read... this book is for you!

I just read this book and found it hard to put down. Ms Caldwell's description of the Roman world along with the portrait of the main character make this novel a must whether you are a religious person or simply a lover of history.

4 out of 5 stars Dear and Glorious Physician is a Great Novel.......2003-12-02

This is not only a great period read, but a truly outstanding novel. I thoroughly enjoyed every page of this book. Caldwell's research of the time period helps make the novel more believable, and makes the reader feel as if they were in the first century Roman Empire. Caldwell pays fine attention to detail when describing her settings, emotional natures, and physical traits of her characters. An example can be found on page 493; "The earth danced in heat waves; the sea flashed like blue fire." Here Caldwell personifies the earth, and uses simile to provide imagery of Lucanus's searching, and his attempts to record the life of Jesus. Again in the journey narrative, Caldwell uses metaphor to bring an ominous atmosphere to the mind's eye saying, "The moon was a yellow skull in the dark sky." Caldwell is careful not to clutter the work with description; she develops the plot well. I found her writing style easy to follow, which engages the reader and keeps them wanting more. There is no overwhelming theme of the novel; the book follows one man's journey, Lucanus (St. Luke), to come to know God and document the life of Christ. Although the book is religous in nature, Caldwell gives an objective perspective and does not preach to the reader. This is a great novel for people of all walks of life.

Even though I am agnostic I enjoyed this book a lot. I read it in under a week. It is a wonderful story, not overly religious. A fascinating look at life 2000 years ago.
