Book Description

Surface analysis deals with the characterisation and understanding of the outer layers of substrates. How they react, look and function are all of interest to the surface scientists. From the basic principles of surface analysis this book considers the various techniques used to analyse surfaces and the theory required to understand the results. The book begins with a general introduction to the sometimes complex area of surface analysis, and continues with chapters by leading experts on the many different techniques currently used, including, for example, SIMS, ESCA, Auger and vibrational spectroscopy. Anyone with a basic understanding of the subject will discover, in one single volume, the rudiments of any particular technique and the answers to commonly asked questions.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent review from the most used techniques.......2004-08-23

When I began my phD I've had to learn a lot about different techniques that I worked with. This book was an excellent help, since, despite it is written by specialists, it has an approach that even a beginner can understand.
I was further surprised in the end of my thesis when I used it once more to write deeply about the techniques. It is really a wonderful book!
The first chapter is also a good course concerning the basis of vaccum, that is required to deal with surface science techniques.

          Book Description

The Equilibrium Theory of Inhomogeneous Polymers provides an introduction to the field-theoretic methods and computer simulation techniques that are used in the design of structured polymeric fluids. By such methods, the principles that dictate equilibrium self-assembly in systems ranging from block and graft copolymers, to polyelectrolytes, liquid crystalline polymers, and polymer nanocomposites can be established. Building on an introductory discussion of single-polymer statistical mechanics, the book provides a detailed treatment of analytical and numerical techniques for addressing the conformational properties of polymers subjected to spatially-varying potential fields. This problem is shown to be central to the field-theoretic description of interacting polymeric fluids, and models for a number of important polymer systems are elaborated. Chapter 5 serves to unify and expound the topic of self-consistent field theory, which is a collection of analytical and numerical techniques for obtaining solutions of polymer field theory models in the mean-field approximation. The concluding Chapter 6 provides a discussion of analytical methods for going beyond the mean-field approximation and an introduction to the exciting new field of field-theoretic polymer simulations - the direct numerical simulation of polymer field theory models. No other book brings together in such a detailed and instructive fashion the theoretical and numerical tools for investigating the equilibrium structure and thermodynamics of meso-structured polymer formulations, including those relevant to soft material nanotechnologies, personal care products, and multiphase plastic materials.

I strongly recommend this highly readable book (quite unlike many other classics in the polymer physics area, including Doi and Edwards which I like). The author spends time discussing relative merits of numerical schemes to solve the set of resulting equations, which is invaluable. I appreciated the ample use of footnotes to keep the reader on track.

                Book Description

Many types of engineering structures exhibit nonlinear behavior under real operating conditions. Sometimes the unpredicted nonlinear behavior of a system results in catastrophic failure. In civil engineering, grandstands at sporting events and concerts may be prone to nonlinear oscillations due to looseness of joints, friction, and crowd movements. In the aerospace industry, nonlinear motions may have serious implications for fatigue life. In the automotive industry, examples include brake sequel and undesirable engine mounting oscillations. Engineers of all types encounter nonlinear behavior in a system at some time in their working lives and should be able to recognize it. Nonlinearity in Structural Dynamics: Detection, Identification and Modeling provides a background in techniques that can be applied to situations in which nonlinearity plays, or is suspected to play, a role in the dynamic structural behavior. Striking a good balance between theory and application, the book covers both analytical and experimental methods and describes their application to real structures. The authors include numerous examples of nonlinearity in real engineering systems. The book is essential reading for engineers and scientists in the fields of structural dynamics and nonlinearity as well as a useful supplement for graduate and senior undergraduate students in engineering courses.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Truly Great WWII Aviation Memoirs.......2006-06-06

Professional writer Jay Stout and WWII air ace extraordinaire, CDR Hamilton McWhorter III (USN Ret) have captured a great piece of personal history in their non-fictional book, "The First Hellcat Ace." This is truly one of the all time greatest stories of U.S. Naval aviation history. The authors take us along as we follow a young Hamilton go through his training (During the time of Pearl Harbor) and off on his battles over North Africa against the Vichy French and in the Pacific against the Japanese.

This is not just a story of how one man becomes the first air ace in a Hellcat Fighter but it deals with accounts of other men from "Fighting Squadron 9." These were America's best young men who fought in the skies above the likes of Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and Tarawa Atoll among other places. They risked their lives daily in air to air combat and from hostile ground and ship fire.

There is much depth to the story telling as we get to look at McWhorter's experiences as he reflects back on those days during the war. It is told as if it had just recently happened. The writing style is easy to read and follow and creates great excitement. It also gives us a more personal view of the men and what their lives were like. This book is suitable for most all readers.

If you enjoy aviation, or naval war stories, history, or just like to read about heroes, then this is the book for you. This is an important book that needs to be discovered by young Americans looking for old fashioned heroes. Commander McWhorter is the real McCoy and it would be good to honor him and others like himself before the Greatest Generation becomes just a memory. But when they do, I hope that this book will still be there casting long shadows over future generations.

                5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2002-05-18

Well written, honest and easy to read - this is the kind of book that gets dusted off every year or so and re-read.

                5 out of 5 stars A Bulls-Eye for "One Slug".......2001-06-06

I found The First Hellcat Ace to be a thoroughly enjoyable chronicle of Hamilton McWhorter's experiences in World War II. The book reads well and the story is engaging, providing a balanced view of his personal and professional life as a Naval aviator. The deprivations of shipboard life, the risks of combat, and the pain of separation from loved ones provide a solid foundation for "One-Slug" McWhorter's story.

                Book Description

What is it like to receive a life-saving organ transplant? On April 13, 1997, I received new lungs. Blow the House Down details my story. It illustrates how Cystic Fibrosis affected my life and how I fought it. This book reflects the immense generosity of so many people, including my donor and her family; my family and friends; people who donate to Cystic Fibrosis research and drive major scientific breakthroughs; and doctors, nurses, and physical therapists who toil hard day in and day out to restore our health. Together, we each have the power to cure disease.

5 out of 5 stars This is what honesty, courage and humor can do ..........2001-02-16

This is an engaging, lucid story by an intelligent man with heart and honesty ... not to mention a mischievous twinkle in his eye! While most of us have not suffered the wrenching health challenges the author recounts, this book is a good companion to anyone who is looking for friendship and encouragement on a hard journey. Certainly, care givers and family should give this book to those who want to know they are not alone in the face of cystic fibrosis, cancer, depression, or other hardships. Charlie knows the icy stare of mortality. And like a hockey ruffian, gives it a full-body check and goes out for beers afterward. Way to go, Charlie!

                5 out of 5 stars INSPIRATIONAL!.......2000-10-26

I was delightfully surprised at the effect this book had on me. I couldn't seem to put it down! I've had a rough time in the past 3-4 years but the ambition displayed in the book showed how differently one can perceive their troubles and turn them into triumph. I admired this portrayal of strength and tenacity.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful account of a man with great courage........2000-10-09

Overcoming greats odds, the author elequently tells the story of his fight against Cystic Fibrosis that ultimately leads to a double lung transplant.

Mr. Tolchin recounts the trials of growing up with CF and all the procedures, medical problems and hospital stays that he encountered. His tale includes all the medical staff and friends that support him during his journey and the importance humanity and human contact has to medical science.

His story is one of triumph, and displays how important family and friends are to overcoming difficult situations. Charlie's not the only hero in this book. He is quick to point out all the people who inspired him along the way. It is here where the books succeeds and inspires. The team effort is unbelievable.

Blow The House Down, is a book that has many lessons a reader can learn. The science and medical break-throughs involved with a double lung transplant are amazing, but the courage of Charles Tolchin, the love of his family and friends and the professional dedication of the medical staff is the real story here.
