Programming the Finite Element Method
ASIN: 0471863335 |
Book Description
Providing an easy introduction to the boundary element method, this book is ideal for any reader wishing to work in this field or use this method for the solution of engineering problems. From the beginning, the emphasis is on the implementation of the method into computer programs which can be used to solve real problems. The book covers two-andthree-dimensional linear and non-linear analysis in potential flow (heat flow and seepage) and static elasticity. Several computer programs are listed in the book and may be downloaded free of charge via the Internet. They include programs and subroutines for:
* 2-D analysis of potential problems using the Trefftz method
* 2-D and 3-D linear analysis of potential and static elasticity problems using isoparametric elements (single and multiple regions)
* implementation of non-linear problems
* coupling to finite elements
The programs (written in FORTRAN 90) are well documented, and can be employed by the user to gain experience with the method through the solution of small test examples. Furthermore, readers may use them as a starting point for developing their own boundary element package. In addition, exercises are included in most chapters involving the use of the programs with answers given in an Appendix, and a number of interesting industrial applications in the areas of mechanical, civil and geotechnical engineering are presented.

Good for student and practitioner.......2001-06-27
I am a grduate student. My specific research area is BEM. and I programmed my own c++ code.
If I could get this book earlier, I could have saved a lot of time. By reading this book, reader can find not only detailed information for coding but also clear understanding about BEM.
The impressive points to me are 1) working 2D/3D potential and stress solvable code-there is multi-region version too, excellent explaining about 2)Corner problem, 3)assembly procedure (especially for multi-region problem), 4) programming frieldly math notations, 5) good logical flow of chapters.
The only problem I found is few mistypings. But, it does not prevent me to understand the material.
For engineers in industry, I think they can use the code to solve engineering problem with some modification if they don't have expensive commercial FE package, or use the code to solve linear problems quickly, etc.
As a result, Prof. Beer achieved his goal of writing this book and I hope this book can help to expand the BEM users.

Book Description
The finite element and the boundary element methods are the two most important developments in numerical mathematics to occur in this century. Many engineering and mathematics graduate curricula now include a course in boundary element methods. Such a course must cover numerical methods, basic methodology to real problems, and interactive computer usage. Both theory and applications, necessary for applied courses, are available in this new textbook. An Introduction to Boundary Element Methods is logically organized and easy to read. The topics are carefully selected and meticulously presented. Applications are described for use in identifying potential problems and for heat transfer, diffusion equations, linear elasticity, water waves, ocean acoustics, acoustic scattering, aerodynamics, porous media, and simple laminar flows. More than 20 computer subroutines help develop and explain the computational aspect of the subject. Hundreds of figures, exercises, and solved examples supplement text and help clarify important information. The computer programs have been tested on some benchmark problems. Even in single precision the results are more accurate and better than those obtained from available Fortran programs.

Not quite a text book--maybe a reference.......2001-01-05
The book was, in my opinion, not the most helpful introduction to the subject. The book is full of equations--it really is a masterpiece when one wants to "read" a book that will impress people around who know nothing about math(like the hot girl/guy in the seat next to you, who is looking over your shoulder ;-)). The unfortunate part is that the author does not really explain anything he is doing. The book does not give any real details or in depth explanations--just formula after formula. I can follow the formulas--that is not the problem--but the lack of statements introducing the methods, explaining the concepts, and leading the reader to understand the material on an all new level is lacking in my opinion. I like to understand the "why" and the "how" of the physical/application side--not just the mathematical formulas(although--if one works through the math, one will eventually figure something out). I was a little disappointed in the book. There are also multiple annoying typos, and spelling mistakes. In summary--the author is a smart guy--he knows the subject--unfortunately, he seems to have forgotten the hardships he had when learning the method. The book should be advertised as a "compliment reference" to a course where a prof would explain the method and ideas--not a great book to pick off the shelf and try to learn BEM by oneself!
Book Description
A thorough yet understandable introduction to the boundary element method, an attractive alternative to the finite element method, is presented. The unique feature of the book is that it not only explains the theory but also the implementation of the theory into computer code. The code in FORTRAN 95 can be downloaded free of charge. The issue of efficiently using parallel processing hardware in order to considerably speed up the computations for large Systems is also addressed. The applications range form problems of heat and fluid flow to static and dynamic elasto-plastic problems in continuum mechanics. After each chapter several exercises are shown and this makes it suitable as a teaching material in a class on the BEM. Several applications of the method to industrial problems are included, that show the advantage over other methods.

Book Description
One of the major achievements in fluid mechanics in the last quarter of the twentieth century has been the development of an asymptotic description of perturbations to boundary layers known generally as 'triple deck theory'. These developments have had a major impact on our understanding of laminar fluid flow, particularly laminar separation. It is also true that the theory rests on three quarters of a century of development of boundary layer theory which involves analysis, experimentation and computation. All these parts go together, and to understand the triple deck it is necessary to understand which problems the triple deck resolves and which computational techniques have been applied. This book presents a unified account of the development of laminar boundary layer theory as a historical study together with a description of the application of the ideas of triple deck theory to flow past a plate, to separation from a cylinder and to flow in channels. The book is intended to provide a graduate level teaching resource as well as a mathematically oriented account for a general reader in applied mathematics, engineering, physics or scientific computation.

Two Years in the Life . . ........1999-01-20
Jack Ilfrey was a WWII fighter pilot in Europe and Africa. His colorful career is recounted here in very interesting detail. This is not just a "There I was inverted at 500 feet with both engines out" book but rather an overview of what ALL of a fighter pilot's life was like during the height of the war. We read about hijinks on the ground, fear and bravery in the air, and under it all, a great will to be done with it. Ilfrey conveys what it must have been like to be 20 years old, with terrific freedom, in a foreign country, during wartime. He was quite the nonconformist, which led to his being demoted several times. Still, his attributes as a fighter pilot kept him in the fight, to the benefit of us all. If you like WWII aviation, read this book. If you end up liking Jack Ilfrey, as I sure did, visit the web page dedicated to him, A Tribute to Jack Ilfrey.
Book Description
Rara is a vibrant annual street festival in Haiti, when followers of the Afro-Creole religion called Vodou march loudly into public space to take an active role in politics. Working deftly with highly original ethnographic material, Elizabeth McAlister shows how Rara bands harness the power of Vodou spirits and the recently dead to broadcast coded points of view with historical, gendered, and transnational dimensions.
Customer Reviews:
Facinating book.......2007-04-09
This book was written by someone who obviously lives within the Haitian culture. There are so many gems of information, and so much understanding and love of the people and culture of this mysterious land. By the time I had finished reading it, barriers had been removed. I felt as though I had spent time there, had experienced the Rara bands and danced elbow to elbow with them.
The subject matter is enticing, and the writing is enjoyable. I read this several years ago, and intend to reread it often, to increase my understanding of Haitian culture. Heck, I just want to dance with them again!
Great writing, really terrific research.......2003-03-05
I can't recommend this book highly enough for anyone interested in world music, Afro-Caribbean religion and Haitian culture. Very few academically researched books convey this level of top quality, engaging writing. I couldn't put it down! Rara is a unique, fascinating musical form indigenous to the Caribbean and affiliated with the Haitian peasantry and vodou. It's hard to explain -- a multi-layered, polyphonic music akin to the minimalism of Steve Reich, but much cooler. If you're lucky enough to live in New York or Miami, you can see rara every weekend during the summer in your own city! This book explains the history, culture and significance of the music. And it also includes a CD so you can hear the music for yourself. Highly recommended!
Book Description
This moving story of a couple who left a life of wealth and luxury to found a hospital in rural Haiti is a vibrant and inspiring portrait of a marriage, of two cultures, and of the practice of medicine in the Third World. The youngest of the sons of William L. Mellon, Larimer Mellon seemed destined to follow his father and uncles into a life of high finance and wealth accumulation. But Larry Mellon was made of different stuff. Graduating from medical school in his mid-forties, Mellon and his wife Gwen, a medical lab technician, left their comfortable Arizona ranch and moved to poverty-stricken Haiti. In the Artibonite Valley, where life expectancy was the lowest in the hemisphere, they built the Albert Schweitzer Hospital. Larry Mellon served as a physician there for the rest of his life. And Gwen Mellon, now in her eighties, still lives in Haiti and works for the hospital.
Written by an acclaimed biographer, Song of Haiti bridges the worlds of the super-rich and the very poor and finds in a lonely valley in Haiti a mystery, a love story, and an inspiration. 24pp. photos.
Customer Reviews:
Inspiring Yet True to Life.......2005-04-04
Truly an engaging read that reminds us that we can choose to turn our lives around at any time. Larimer Mellon did just that at age 37, first going to medical school, then founding a hospital in Deschapelles, Haiti, that is running to this very day. The author does well to follow their project and show how their lives were intertwined by others similarly interested in Albert Schweitzer's ethos. This idea of "Reverence for Life" has led to the existence, in the middle of poorest rural Haiti, of a thriving band of expatriates, native Haitians, short-term volunteers, and visitors of various sorts dedicated to humanistic ideals. Hospital Albert Schweitzer lives on, and you can be a part of it if you choose.
A great humanitarian and noble doctor.......2001-11-21
The life of William Larimer Mellon is an example of the life Americans should dream for themselves and those they love dearly. For one who majored in biology and gave it up for 18 years in auditing the paralells to Mellon's change of career and motivations struck me deeply. On witnessing the WTC disaster personally (a few hundred yards away) man should strive for something in life and go for it. Barry Paris well written account of a life inspired by Dr. Schweitzer is highly recommended to all readers committed to God and American morals and values. If readers have a noble vision the price of this book is totally insiginificant to the highest rewards you will gather from reading it.
A Lot of Mellon A Little of Haiti.......2001-09-26
The book has two distinct sections. The first 100 pages is a report on the Mellon family lifestyle, and how a rich maverick Mellon got to Haiti. The rest of the book details Dr. and Mrs. Mellon's founding of a hospital and civil engineering projects in central Haiti.
An important finding is that the Mellon's hospital was founded on the humanitarian premise, "Reverence for life." Taken from Dr. Sweitzer's work in Africa, life refers not only to human life, but also plant and animal. This little detail is critical to understanding the book. Many missions to Haiti are Christian, while Dr. Mellon's hospital is distinctly humanistic primarily as presented in the book.
As all books on Haiti fairly present, doing anything in Haiti is hard, and without American financial support, very little work done lasts. The hospital Dr. Mellon founded did well as long as he provided two of the four million dollars needed to run it. His civil engineering projects, in which he was much more interested than medicine (he actually only practiced medicine 3 years), all crumbled when turned over to the Haitians. Many other cottage industries met the same fate.
The book thus captures the Haitian dilemna, how to serve in Haiti and lift up the Haitians to be self sufficient. If Dr. Mellon's millions couldn't do it, how can any of us with less money at our disposal. Never the less, we go to Haiti because we cannot not go, nor can we not go back after going once.
An excellent book about how a real rich guy did his best to follow his heart, not his accountant's advice, and another book about how a strong wife really does the grunt work while her husband plays with big boy's toys.
An amazing book about inspiring people.......2000-06-19
Song of Haiti is an absolutely awesome book! As a nurse who has done mission work in Haiti, I found this book authentic, a true inspiration, as well as a compelling, indepth view of the lives of many dedicated and compassionate people. Barry Paris' work describes the country and the people in beautiful and fullfilling language. Oftentimes, I felt as if I were in Haiti again experiencing the amazing, hard-working and loving people of the country. I've never before read a biography with such griping prose. I looked forward to my time to read because I became more and more interested in the life of every person described - be it Dr. Mellon and Gwen or Albert Schweitzer, or the nurses and doctors and friends with whom they shared their lives. I believe this is the way that biographical work should be written. Song of Haiti is thorough in that it covers the entirety of Dr. Mellon's life, touching on his downfalls as well as his high acheivements. I found that the realism with which the story is told is excellent and believable. The many everyday encounters and adventures are interesting and mesmerizing - it makes a person want to travel and experience the third world for all of the beauty and intensity it offers. I recommend this book to everyone, regardless of your interest in medicine, mission work, or biography. It is amazing.
