Study of Factors Affecting Attitudes of Young Female Students Toward Chemistry at the High School Level
Santonino K. Banya Manufacturer: Dissertation.com ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1581122594 |
Book Description
Chemistry is a human endeavor that relies on basic human qualities like creativity, insights, reasoning, and skills. It depends on habits of the mind: skepticism, tolerance of ambiguity, openness to new ideas, intellectual honesty, curiosity, and communication. Young female students begin studying chemistry curiosity; however, when unconvinced, they become skeptical. Researches focused on gender studies have indicated that attitudes toward science education differ between males and females. A declining interest in chemistry and the under representation of females in the chemical science was found (Jacobs, 2000).This study investigated whether self-confidence toward chemistry, the influence of role models, and knowledge about the usefulness of chemistry were affecting the attitudes toward chemistry, of 183 high school young females across the United States. The young female students surveyed, had studied chemistry for at least one year prior to participating in the study during the fall semester of 2003. The schools were randomly selected represented diverse economic backgrounds and geographical locations. Data were obtained using Chemistry Attitude Influencing Factors (CAIF) instrument and from interviews with a focus group of three young female students about the effect of self-confidence toward chemistry, the influence of role models, and knowledge about the usefulness of chemistry on their decision to study chemistry. The CAIF instrument consisted of a 12-items self-confidence questionnaire (ConfiS), 12-items each of the influence of role models (RoMoS) and knowledge about usefulness of chemistry (US) questionnaire. ConfiS was adopted (with permission) from CAEQ (Coll & Dalgety, 2001), and both RoMoS and US were modified from TOSRA (Fraser, 1978), public domain document.
The three young female students interviewed, gave detailed responses about their opinions regarding self-confidence toward chemistry, the influence of role models, and knowledge about the usefulness of chemistry on their attitudes toward the study of chemistry.
Both quantitative (a Likert-type Scale questionnaire) and qualitative (open-ended questions) items were used to investigate the views of young female students. Results of the survey were analysed using a correlation test. Significant differences were found in the Likert-type scale scores, providing evidences supporting literature that suggests, self-confidence toward chemistry, the influence of role models, and knowledge about the usefulness of chemistry affect the decision of young female students about the study of chemistry. Interview responses corroborated the results from the survey. Strategies for addressing the problems and recommendations for further studies have been suggested.

Simple Mathematics Using Student Editions of MATLAB

Book Description
Must we learn mathematics as in the 1800s ? If you aspire to be a scientist or an engineer you may be frustrated by the very formal structure of mathematics. In particular, you may find proofs difficult to follow. If you only need to apply mathematics, however, you may take the attitude that proofs are an affair between the professional mathematician and his Creator. You may safely trust the learning of dead mathematicians, since their theorems have been thoroughly verified by those now living. You must first explore the meaning of the main concepts, but from there on you can begin to apply the mathematical knowledge accumulated during the past centuries. This volume illustrates the most important concepts and results of college mathematics in the form of numerical examples. The standard language used is MATLAB®, chosen for its remarkably simple syntax. While working through the examples you learn a primitive but useful subset of the MATLAB commands. This arsenal suffices to solve large systems of linear equations (even with complex coefficients), calculate derivatives and integrals, and solve ordinary differential equations up to second order. The book starts with elementary arithmetic, algebra, and tri-gonometry, and the final chapters extend the treatise to Fourier analysis. After digesting all the examples you will have gained intuitive and practical understanding of mathematics and are in a position to apply it on your own. In addition, you have become familiar with one of the most popular programs for com-putation.

Legacy of Leadership: Lessons from Admiral Lord Nelson
Joseph F. Callo Manufacturer: Hellgate Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 1555715109 |
Book Description
Because his victories were so electrifying, numerous, historically influential, and so closely linked to personal leadership, examining the life of Admiral Lord Nelson provides a unique opportunity to better understand a timely subject, leadership.Much has changed during the two centuries since Nelson's days. But if there are significant differences between Nelson's time and today, there are also provocative parallels, the most important of which is the plain fact that good leadership is still an essential element of any success.
The on-going questionof how to maintain the strength necessary to succeed requires something more than what Goeth called "ignorance in action."
Because he was so successful, Nelson's actions, particularly his tactics, have been analyzed intensively by the experts. Legacy of Leadership: Lessons from Admiral Lord Nelson takes an analytical look at the life of this hero and gets beyond what he did to the the why and how of his successes. It looks at many of the personal qualities that contributed to Nelson's achievements. They include mental courage, aggressiveness, deeply-held convictions, patriotism, knowledge in his field, and a genuine regard for those he commanded. These elements may not have made Nelson a perfect person, but without a doubt, they combine to form the character of a winner.

THIS IS A VERY GOOD BOOK.......2003-09-10
WEAKNESS AND STRENGTH.......2001-06-13
Callo's monograph illustrates that a great leader's weaknesses contribute as much to his success as his strengths. Nelson's weaknesses are actually the strength of his character. A man willing to risk all for what he believes is right rather than what is politically expedient. Unfortunately, in today's climate, Lord Nelson would have been retired or drummed out of the naval service long before his greatest victories.
This book provides profound insight into the life and mind of a tactical genius. I recommend it highly both as an example and as a warning.
Leadership Defined.......2000-09-09
History and a great learning experience........2000-07-27
Leadership Defined.......2000-07-25
In his look back on the Admiral's life, Callo focuses on the the qualities that made him a great leaders, qualities that Callo rightly contents should be easily visible in today's military and business leaders.
In interesting detail, Callo shows how Lord Nelosn's love of the sea, deep religious beliefs and sense of honor won him both battles and human respect. For example, with his own elbow shattered by either grape shot from a cannon or a musket ball, the semiconscious Nelson ordered assistance for others before ordering the amputation of his own arm. And, reminding us of Nelson's own inner strenght and humor Callo points out that Nelson not only ordered the amputation of his own arm, but "later complained of the coldness of surgeon's instruments."
Just as important Callo shows his skill as a writer by weaving those qualities of leadership into the battles that history talks about whenever the name Nelson is mention. Which may cause the reader to find out not only more about Nelson, but much more about the qualities of the leaders surrounding us today.

William Osler: A Life in Medicine
Michael Bliss Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0195123468 |
Book Description
William Osler was born in a parsonage in backwoods Canada on July 12, 1849. In a life lasting seventy years, he practiced, taught, and wrote about medicine at Canada's McGill University, America's Johns Hopkins University, and finally as Regius Professor at Oxford. At the time of his death in England in 1919, many considered him to be the greatest doctor in the world. Osler, who was a brilliant, innovative teacher and a scholar of the natural history of disease, revolutionized the art of practicing medicine at the bedside of his patients. He was idolized by two generations of medical students and practitioners for whom he came to personify the ideal doctor. But much more than a physician, Osler was a supremely intelligent humanist. In both his writings and his personal life, and through the prism of the tragedy of the Great War, he embodied the art of living. It was perhaps his legendary compassion that elevated his healing talents to an art form and attracted to his private practice students, colleagues, poets (Walt Whitman for example) politicians, royalty, and nameless ordinary people with extraordinary conditions. William Osler's life lucidly illuminates the times in which he lived. Indeed, this is a book not only about the evolution of modern medicine, the training of doctors, holism in medical thought, and the doctor-patient relationship, but also about humanism, Victorianism, the Great War, and much else. Meticulously researched, drawing on many new sources and offering new interpretations, William Osler: A Life in Medicine brings to life both a fascinating man and the formative age of twentieth-century medicine. It is a classic biography of a classic life, both authoritative and highly readable.Customer Reviews:
A Biography for all Doctors to Read.......2007-09-05
A Brilliant Biography of a Brilliant Doctor.......2006-04-30
A Real Eminent Victorian.......2004-02-22
Osler was also that quintessential Canadian, the provincial boy who achieves fame on the wider stage of the USA or Britain. At the peak of his fame, he was the best known physician in the English speaking world and something of a minor celebrity.
Like all fine biographies, this book is about more than its central subject. It is valuable on the development of Canadian society, the growth of universities in the USA and Canada, the history of medicine, and the devastating impact of WWI.
This will be the standard biography of Osler and it is worthy of its subject.
the good doctor.......2002-09-18
Unlike the time-honored work by Cushing, Bliss's book is no hagiography; it makes no false overtures about Dr. Osler's iconic grandeur, instead letting the reader discover for himself (or herself) that Dr. Osler was, in fact, as great a man as people say he was. (All that being said, I still value the two-volume Cushing biography, and there is no way I will rid myself of the precious first-edition set I snatched up last year at the Maryland Historical Society bookshop!)
One need not practice Oslerolatry (that is, the veritable worship of Dr. Osler expressed by many of the older faculty at Hopkins and elsewhere) to appreciate this book, though having an interest in medicine and/or medical history may help. Critics often lament that American doctors no longer have any professional integrity, and that taking the Hippocratic Oath is a sham. Read this book, and discover how great the American physician can be...and THEN lament that they don't make them like they used to.
Absolutely delightful!.......2001-02-02
Of course this book will be compared with the innumerable number of other writings about William Osler, most notably of course the Cushing version. And Bliss clearly acknowledges the plethora of carefully collected documentations and personal correspondences that Cushing had accumulated in crafting his tale. However, I think this book stands on its own as a unique rendering of Osler mainly because of one simple fact. Bliss has had the luxury of time on his side to not just document the time and lives and the state of Medicine in the late 19th century, but most importantly, he relates it to the current, modern day state of affairs in those areas as well. He has woven a story that encompasses through the life of the great Osler, the tremendous influences of 19th medicine on modern day medicine. Even if one is not in the health-related professions or the biomedical sciences, one cannot miss the fact that this is a book as much about humanism as it is about medicine.
Biography, like history is riddled with biases, especially if it is about people and events that have revolutionazied mankind. This is particularly so in regards to William Osler, whose life and work have been immortalized, and a man who had acheived a legendary status even during his own life time. Bliss's work is as unbiased as it could possibly be given the already intrinsic biases about his subject. In this sense, this book is also unique from the previous biographies of Osler.
Overall, this is a most enjoyable read. This is definitely a "page-flipper" that takes you into the life, struggles, and triumps not only of Osler, but in a sense, of the entire human race.

Osler's "A Way of Life" and Other Addresses, with Commentary and Annotations
Sir William Osler , Sir William Osler , and Hisae Niki Manufacturer: Duke University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0822326825 |
Book Description
Sir William Osler (1849–1919) had a long and distinguished career as a physician and professor at McGill University, the University of Pennsylvania, the Johns Hopkins University, and finally, as the Regius Chair in Medicine at Oxford University. Over the course of his professional life, Osler gave many addresses—mostly to medical students—on medical ethics, medicine and the humanities, the relationship between the medical practitioner and the patient, and, as the titular essay makes clear, on the “way of life” he advocated for the ethical physician. He remains an inspiration to many contemporary medical practitioners; there are active Osler Societies throughout the world.Customer Reviews:
straight from the doctor's plume.......2002-09-18
Thankfully, we have this new book from Duke University Press. With more annotations than a Harvard Law Review issue, this well-selected sample of Dr. Osler's most well-known papers and addresses presents an effective "translation" to satisfy all medical scholars who, though they seek to emulate Osler's compassion and skill, just can't understand all of his references. When I first read "Aequanimitas," I felt like an ignoramus. After reading it again in this present volume, I felt like an enlightened student eager to carry the Aesculapian staff into the new milennium (or something like that). I highly recommend this book to all medical students and physicians who seek a model of professional excellence in Dr. Osler, but who have heretofore scratched their heads when reading his papers. Revisit "A Way of Life." Read the footnotes. Then don your white coat, tend to your patients, and be proud of the great American medical tradition set forth by Dr. Osler so many years ago.
