    Book Description

Presents an update on the basics, trends and achievements of chemometric methodology required to study the relation between the chemical structure of solutes and their retention in various chromatographic systems. The author critically analyses hundreds of relevant papers published during the past two decades. In this period, chemometrics has evolved into an established research and practice area of interest to scientists ranging from chromatographers to environmental and medicinal chemists. Although emphasis is placed on the more recent findings, readers will also find the basic theories required to solve specific problems. It will prove advantageous for contemporary chemists and related scientists if they switch from thermodynamics-- in practice often inappropriate-- to a statistically based (and limited) chemometric approach.

      Book Description

This volume, which presents the cumulation of the authors' research in the field, deals with Lidstone, Hermite, Abel--Gontscharoff, Birkhoff, piecewise Hermite and Lidstone, spline and Lidstone--spline interpolating problems. Explicit representations of the interpolating polynomials and associated error functions are given, as well as explicit error inequalities in various norms. Numerical illustrations are provided of the importance and sharpness of the various results obtained. Also demonstrated are the significance of these results in the theory of ordinary differential equations such as maximum principles, boundary value problems, oscillation theory, disconjugacy and disfocality. For mathematicians, numerical analysts, computer scientists and engineers.

        Book Description

This book covers the main topics concerned with interpolation and approximation by polynomials. This subject can be traced back to the precalculus era but has enjoyed most of its growth and development since the end of the nineteenth century and is still a lively and flourishing part of mathematics. In addition to coverage of univariate interpolation and approximation, the text includes material on multivariate interpolation and multivariate numerical integration, a generalization of the Bernstein polynomials that has not previously appeared in book form, and a greater coverage of Peano kernel theory than is found in most textbooks. There are many worked examples and each section ends with a number of carefully selected problems that extend the student's understanding of the text. George Phillips has lectured and researched in mathematics at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland. His most recent book, Two Millenia of Mathematics: From Archimedes to Gauss (Springer 2000), received enthusiastic reviews in the USA, Britain and Canada. He is well known for his clarity of writing and his many contributions as a researcher in approximation theory.

                    Book Description

For the first time in trade paperback, the book in which one of the most celebrated biographer/historians of our time looks back at his own early life and gives us a remarkable account of World War II in the Pacific, of what it looked like, sounded like, smelled like, and, most of all, what it felt like to one who underwent all but the ultimate of its experiences. Back Bay takes pride in making William Manchesters intense, stirring, and impassioned memoir available to a new generation of readers. A book that will enthrall readers interested in the experiences and exploits of Americas greatest generation. As noted in a recent front-page New York Times article, William Manchester is today widely regarded as Americas preeminent biographer/historian. In the two decades since its initial publication, Goodbye, Darkness has achieved the status of a modern classic.

                    3 out of 5 stars A great, personal narrative........2007-10-12

This book was recommended to me by one of my college professors. It is a fine recollection of a young Marine who answered the call of his country, endured the horrors of war, particularly on the isle of Guadalcanal. Every page makes this book a must-read! It's as if you are actually there, in the midst of battle! Whether you are a military supporter, or just someone who appreciates a good read, this book is for you.

                    5 out of 5 stars Truth seeker.......2007-10-06

Of all the books I read on warfare during my younger years, this was the first one to open my eyes about WWII and the military. When I read Manchester's account, for example, about the crews that would come on shore after a beachhead had been secured to clear the body parts from view, leaving only "whole bodies" in the sand, and only then allowing journalists and photographers ashore, I was outraged. I got out every book I had on the Pacific theater of battle and spent that entire night verifying that his claim was true - that the hideous violence of those battles had been sanitized by the military itself, and not just by Hollywood.

This evening I watched the third episode of Ken Burns' new documentary, "The War." I sat up and took notice when the film covered the beachhead invasion of Tarawa where the landing craft collided with offshore coral reefs and became sitting ducks to the Japanese artillery. Burns obviously hadn't read "Goodbye Darkness," or he certainly would have reported that the naval commanders had been warned about the reefs the night before by a native who had paddled his outrigger out to warn them of the peril that awaited those poor Marines.

It's always hard to find truth about wars, but it's important. So I am forever grateful to Manchester for initiating my journey to seek it out.

5 out of 5 stars The Hobo Philosopher.......2007-09-08

I liked this a lot. I bought a few copies and passed them around. I felt that it was very thoughtful. It is not pro-war or even pro-soldering. But even though Manchester was a marine in the Pacific during World War II and is heavily pro-buddy an the Corps, he approaches war without all the who-harr. I especially liked his meeting himself analogy - the young soldier talking with the old soldier. I think Manchester was honest and reflective in this work. It was a good book and I'm sure that a good many old hardened marines have no problem associating and sympathizing with Mr. Manchester's reflections. It is a thoughtful book on the reality of war. I don't think that it is right or left - I think it is just the plain old honest truth as William Manchester saw it.

                    2 out of 5 stars A Very Readable Lie.......2007-03-27

William Manchester was NOT a rifleman. He gives the reader the impression that he was at all the invasions mentioned when in fact he was on Okinawa and served as an "intelligence" type. He claims "trumatic lesions of the brain", but gives little info on how that happened. He was a REMF ("rear echelon ..."). The book borrows liberally from other WWII accounts. It is not HIS story but a compendium of what other Marines went through.

If you want to read a much better, closer to the fray report on WWII Marines, read E B Sledge's, With The Old Breed At Pelilu and Okinawa.

I have a letter from Dr. Sledge where he lambasts Manchester's revisions history of his own military service as "bunk." Sledge's book is used at the Naval War College while Manchester's is not - says something.

Yes, it does read well. But it's not what it is supposed to be. It's not a memoir - it's mostly a fraud.

5 out of 5 stars "Outstanding" War Memoir.......2007-01-05

If anyone really wants to know what it meant to be a Marine "grunt" in WWII, or any other war, there are two "outstanding" memoirs they need to read.

Manchester's "Goodbye, Darkness: A Memoir of the Pacific" is one. E.B. Sledge's "With The Old Breed at Peleliu and Okinawa" is the other.

No "John Wayne" stuff in either book. Just a couple of very articulate enlisted Marine "grunts" serving their time in Hell and living to tell about it.

Fast forward to Korea, Vietnam and Iraq and nothing much has changed --- except the geography, the climate and the face of the enemy. The horror of combat is still the same. Both memoirs should be read by anyone considering joining The Corps in time of war.

Both are now in the "Read Again" section of my personal library. Semper Fi, Marines.

                    Book Description

The nightmares began for William Manchester 23 years after WW II. In his dreams he lived with the recurring image of a battle-weary youth (himself), "angrily demanding to know what had happened to the three decades since he had laid down his arms."

To find out, Manchester visited those places in the Pacific where as a young Marine he fought the Japanese, and in this book examines his experiences in the line with his fellow soldiers (his "brothers"). He gives us an honest and unabashedly emotional account of his part in the war in the Pacific.

"The most moving memoir of combat on WW II that I have ever read. A testimony to the fortitude of man...a gripping, haunting, book." --William L. Shirer

anyone who's parent was a pacific war vet should read this book. Manchester tells how it was, how it worked and how he delt with it in his life. He fills in some of the history, laid out as he revisits some of the islands taken by the marines, fleshes that out with good and bad memories of his experiences in marine life and combat on Guadalcanal and okinawa. it is a very personal story, much like any vets story who survived that theater of operation, more upbeat than say Robert Graves Goodby to all that, and not so combat specific as Wheelers book about 3 days on Iwo Jima. If you like personal stories, this is for you.

My uncle is a retired US Marine who was in the Pacific Campaign. I am retired Navy (VietNam era) and we compared notes on this book. We shared stories of "Blood That Never Dries" I would recommend this book to anyone who served in the military.

                                    Book Description

Step into the world of a Massachusetts litigator whose court experiences are both entertaining and educational. George Caner invites you to join him at the counsel table in five cases that helped shape his career, at Ropes & Gray, as Assistant U.S. Attorney (District of Massachusetts) alongside U.S. attorney, Elliot L. Richardson, and as a special Assistant Attorney General.

Written in a candid and engaging style, Going the Distance is a unique book that tackles tough and intellectually invigorating issues, such as:

                                    • Does the right of fair speech, to many a super-right, overcome rights of privacy, contract and trademarks?;

                                    • What can a litigant do when the judge sitting on his case does not—or will not—obey the rules and there is no right of appeal?;

                                    • Can a charitable corporation change its mission and pass on profits to another's business?

Chapter 1 presents the author's encounters with the late Honorable Charles S. Wyzanski, Jr., a legal mind of genius proportion whose demeanor on the bench was both harsh and mercurial. Mr. Caner recounts "combat" experiences battling Judge Wyzanski's inexplicable acquittal of the Standard Coil defendants even before witnesses had testified. Chapter 3 recalls a comical episode in a 19th century pastoral setting. Mr. Caner recounts developments in the case and evidentiary issues that make the reader chuckle.

Other cases featured in Going the Distance arose out of headline events of the recent past, such as the sale of the Boston Marathon, a Boston icon; and the Commonwealth's action to ban showings of Frederick Wiseman's film depicting "various forms of madness" displayed by inmates of MCI Bridgewater. Going the Distance treats the reader to a savvy, "bird's eye view" into what may unfold upon entering the halls of justice as a litigant, attorney, witness or juror.

                                    5 out of 5 stars A Real Nugget of a Book.......2002-10-30

George Caner, one of the most forceful and articulate trial lawyers practicing in Boston over the past forty years, has written a wonderful account of some of the most challenging (and notorious) cases he has handled over that time period. I rank this book right up there with Louis Nizer's classic, My Life In Court, and believe that it is essential reading not only for any trial attorney seeking to improve her/his skills, but also for any person who delights in the workings and insights of an extraodinary mind.
