Book Description
FROM THE PREFACE Almost all polymeric systems are subjected to a flow field at least once along the route between preparation and application. . . . There is also an increased interest in predictive models on phase behavior and suitable techniques for characterizing the structure of these systems when subjected to flow. Multiphase polymeric systems are particularly susceptible to flow, which may cause orientation of species, morphological changes, and phase transitions. All these events may, in turn, affect the end product properties, such as permeability, electrical conductivity, [and] mechanical properties. In processing, escalating needs have evolved for optimization and development of novel and more uniform product properties and increased productivity. In order to arrive at an understanding of processing polymeric systems under elastic flow conditions, it is convenient to analyze the basic physical mechanisms under conditions that enable development of predictive models in conjunction with controlled experimentation. . . . In recent years, the science of rheo-physics has evolved and now involves both advanced theories and experimental techniques. Rheo-physics means the rheological, morphological, and thermodynamic behavior of structured polymer systems during flow. . . . In this monograph, the rheo-optical techniques are . . . emphasized. The book gives an introduction to rheo-physics, including fundamentals of theories, and a representative selection of applications of rheo-optical techniques for analyzing multiphase systems. The chapters contain both practical advice for the new experimenter . . . as well as review material for the experienced scientist.

Matrix-Geometric Solutions in Stochastic Models: An Algorithmic Approach
ASIN: 0898714257 |
Book Description
Matrix analytic methods are popular as modeling tools because they give one the ability to construct and analyze a wide class of queuing models in a unified and algorithmically tractable way. The authors present the basic mathematical ideas and algorithms of the matrix analytic theory in a readable, up-to-date, and comprehensive manner. In the current literature, a mixed bag of techniques is used-some probabilistic, some from linear algebra, and some from transform methods. Here, many new proofs that emphasize the unity of the matrix analytic approach are included.
Customer Reviews:
A Great Book.......2002-08-02
Matrix Analytic Methods (MAM) are great modeling tools that can analyze a variety of stochastic systems in a unified way and in an algorithmically tractable manner. This book is one of the greatest that have been published on queueing theory and stochastic modeling.
This book covers
1. Examples of quasi-birth-and-death (QBD) processes.
2. Phase-type distributions
3. Stationary and non-stationary QBDs
4. Algorithms (from probabilistic reasoning)
5. And many others.
I used this book as a text for my graduate students and it was a real pleasure. Throughout the books, readers will see MAM as an art of modeling and analysis of stochastic systems, not the pile of techniques.
This book is aiming at readers in queueing theory, computer science, OR/MS, statistics, mathematics, and many other related disciplines. This book also serves as the source of bibliography not otherwise easily available.

Book Description
This book provides a unified approach for the study of constrained Markov decision processes with a finite state space and unbounded costs. Unlike the single controller case considered in many other books, the author considers a single controller with several objectives, such as minimizing delays and loss, probabilities, and maximization of throughputs. It is desirable to design a controller that minimizes one cost objective, subject to inequality constraints on other cost objectives. This framework describes dynamic decision problems arising frequently in many engineering fields. A thorough overview of these applications is presented in the introduction. The book is then divided into three sections that build upon each other. The first part explains the theory for the finite state space. The author characterizes the set of achievable expected occupation measures as well as performance vectors, and identifies simple classes of policies among which optimal policies exist. This allows the reduction of the original dynamic into a linear program. A Lagranian approach is then used to derive the dual linear program using dynamic programming techniques. In the second part, these results are extended to the infinite state space and action spaces. The author provides two frameworks: the case where costs are bounded below and the contracting framework. The third part builds upon the results of the first two parts and examines asymptotical results of the convergence of both the value and the policies in the time horizon and in the discount factor. Finally, several state truncation algorithms that enable the approximation of the solution of the original control problem via finite linear programs are given.
Customer Reviews:
Specialized Topic, too many typos.......2003-03-10
This is a monograph, not a textbook, and the author says so in the first sentence of the introduction.
Consequently (?) the mathematical sophistication required varies very widely from one page to the next. Also, it makes no attempt to be self contained, but refers freely to other sources.
The topic is quite specialized, but the need to consider it is argued well.
Unfortunately, it does not contain many examples.
Particularly annoying is the almost unconstrained number of typos, one of the worst books I have seen in this respect.
The book is certainly not an introduction to this topic, suitable for self study, but rather a book written by one specialist for other specialists. This I suppose was the author's intention.

Book Description
This introductory textbook is designed for a one-semester course on queueing theory that does not require a course in stochastic processes as a prerequisite. Oftentimes students in applied disciplines such as computer science, operations research, and engineering do not take a course on queueing theory because it requires a prerequisite course on stochastic processes; or they take a course without the necessary background and learn as one would use a cookbook. By integrating the necessary background on stochastic processes with the analysis of models, this book provides a sound foundational introduction to the modeling and analysis of queueing systems for a broad interdisciplinary audience.
Key features:
* An introductory chapter including a historical account of the growth of queueing theory in the last 100 years.
* A modeling-based approach with emphasis on identification of models using topics such as collection of data and tests for stationarity and independence of observations.
* Rigorous treatment of the foundations of basic models commonly used in applications with appropriate references for advanced topics.
* A chapter on modeling and analysis using computational tools.
* A comprehensive treatment of statistical inference for queueing systems.
* A discussion of operational and decision problems.
* Modeling exercises as a motivational tool, and review exercises covering background material on statistical distributions.
* Minimal prerequisites: calculus with some differential equations and an undergraduate course in probability and statistics.
* Appendices containing essential background material.
Introduction to Queueing Theory may be used as a textbook by first-year graduate students in fields such as computer science, operations research, industrial and systems engineering, as well as related fields such as manufacturing and communications engineering. Upper-level undergraduate students in mathematics, statistics, and engineering may also use the book in an elective introductory course on queueing theory. With its rigorous coverage of basic material and extensive bibliography of the queueing literature, the work may also be useful to applied scientists and practitioners as a self-study reference for applications and further research.

Book Description
This tutorial volume presents a coherent and well-balanced introduction to the validation of stochastic systems; it is based on a GI/Dagstuhl research seminar. Supervised by the seminar organizers and volume editors, established researchers in the area as well as graduate students put together a collection of articles competently covering all relevant issues in the area.
The lectures are organized in topical sections on: modeling stochastic systems, model checking of stochastic systems, representing large state spaces, deductive verification of stochastic systems.

From the author: A stochastic model of the EWMA control chart employing the variance-adjusted control limits is presented. The average run length for various shifts in the process mean is approximated by using a Markov chain approach. Following this, an alternative basis for the design of EWMA schemes is proposed. Computational results are presented and the impact of employing the variance-adjusted control limits on the average run length is investigated. Finally, conditions that permit the use of the asymptotic control limits in place of the variance-adjusted control limits are also identified.

Customer Reviews:
Crazy Ray's Review.......2002-11-05
What an excellent read. "The Leaders" is just another addition to this wonderful trilogy (The Legacies, The Leaders, The Battles) Try to read these three great books. "The Leaders" offers refreshing insights into many great characters of the period.
A perfectly edited Biographical Anthology.......2000-05-07
As a Civil War buff, I was pleasantly surprised at how much depth is covered in these short, biographical chapters. I know quite a bit about many of the leaders included in the volume and I did not find any glaring errors or oversimplifications. Each chapter has a team of writers and the editors did an excellent job of melding their contributions into a coherent, readible finished product. In short chapters, the writers and editors did a remarkable job in capturing the characters of their subjects. Furthermore, the book casts judgment on the success of characters such as Jefferson Davis and Georgwe McClellan. I like the fact that it takes a position and, in my opinion, these positions are fairly arrived at. For example, the editors unequivocally declare McClellan to be a failure. In a short chapter, they support their conclusions well. Indeed, they did a great job in seeking the answers to what made McClellan tick. The writing is lucid, the illustrations and captions are illuminating and the conclusions drawn are interesting. I enjoyed this book wholeheartedly.
Good comprehensive view of the major figures in the War........1999-02-21
This book is an excellent resource for both the amateur and professional Civil War historian. This book provides the key facts with some insight into the lives of some of the main figures of the American Civil War. As a professional Civil War Historian it can be admitted at times that there are certain things that we all forget and this book makes it a lot easier to refer to than trying to page through a 1000 page biography. This book is a very good refresher and is extremely easy to read and understand. I also like the choice of photogrpahs that are used throughout the book. These are some of the more famous photographs taken and in this sense it provides a good introduction for the amateur Civil War Historian. I recommend this book as a must for any Civil War library. This along with the other two books in the series are a must for every Civil War Historian regardless to the degree of study of that individual.
Easy reading and interesting facts.......1999-01-03
This book, although full of intersting facts, is very easy to read. It is a general overview of the more popular and historic figures of the civil war. Although this book is fairly well informed, it falls short on some of the backgrounds of the war leaders. The main focus of the book is the time that they spend in the war, there is maybe 2-4 pages in life prior and after the war. This is a good book for a collection and I would recommend it to those who have a new found interest in the civil war. This book is not the cornerstone of anyones collection, but a good reference tool and outline of the main leaders of the civil war.

Lincoln Revisited (Lincoln Forum Books)
ASIN: 0201408295 |
Book Description
During the Civil War, Americans felt themselves to be on intimate terms with their commander in chief, sending President Abraham Lincoln between two hundred and five hundred pieces of mail every day—letters that expressed the concerns, aspirations, grievances, and obsessions of the nation. Ranging from weighty political tomes to greetings accompanying homespun gifts, the letters reflect the pulse of the country in a time of upheaval. This illuminating collection includes straightforward correspondence from ordinary Americans requesting autographs and favors as well as pleas from the influential, such as the anguished open letter from New York Tribune publisher Horace Greeley imploring Lincoln to end his “remiss” policy of caution on emancipation. This new paperback edition, featuring twenty-two illustrations, portrays a president clearly eager to review and respond to the advice, criticism, and requests of the nation’s citizens.
Customer Reviews:
What life was like during the Civil War..........2000-08-21
This is a fascinating book of letters to Abe Lincoln by people from all walks of life. Some are terribly moving as the one by the widow of a veteran asking for a referral. Some are eye openers filled with hate that are comical until one pauses to think of the consequences. There are even mundane letters such as the one from ex-president Buchanan asking for a set of his history books to be returned. In reading this book one can often be transposed to a different era, a different mindset, and a different century. This is the grist mill of history. I am so saddened that this book is out of print. Thank goodness I ordered my copy from Amazon.com about 1.5 years ago. If you can possibly get this volume somewhere grab it. Well worth your perusal.
A different, but excellent book on Abraham Lincoln.......1998-06-22
I found "Dear Mr. Lincoln" to be facinating because it contains correspondence Lincoln received from the famous to the unknown; from the educated to the illiterate; from wealthy white men, to poor ex-slaves and women. It also includes letters from children, and many other people during Lincoln's era. Much of this material is funny, some sad, but always interesting. "Dear Mr. Lincoln" is a definite buy for serious Lincoln fans.
"I culd a gaht a job!".......1997-07-28
From the distant cousin who, based upon Abe's knowing him so well, "wulda thot I culd a gaht a
job!" to the ministers who sought to pray to the political leaders who sought to have their advice taken to heart, this is a wonderful view of Civil
War America. The letters are of course the focal point of the book. But it is what they say in their totality rather than individually that impresses. Lincoln heard from all facets of his nation. (And this was before e-mail and telephones!) He heard little of approval and much of dis-approval from critique to hatred. A great mass of mothers seeking draft exemptions, fathers wanting postmasters' jobs, and preachers seeking to show him the light bombarded the Presidential desk. Some were poignant. A few were even wise.
All, in total, were America. Equally fascinating is the first portion of the book which is a thumbnail but thorough history of the Presidential "staff" which eventually grew to three people in number! A great book!

FROM THE AUTHOR.......2001-11-08
Born in Washington, D.C., to one of the First Families of Virginia, Littleton Q. Washington attended Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, before securing a clerkship at the U.S. Treasury Department. In 1855, he joined the U.S. Customs House in San Francisco and became embroiled in that city's Vigilante Uprising. Dismissed from office during James Buchanan's administration, Washington made a wild and dangerous journey home across Mexico, which was then entering a bloody reform war.
An ardent secessionist, Washington secured a lieutenant's commission in the Confederate Army and served at First Bull Run. He briefly edited the Richmond Examiner before joining the Confederate State Department where he worked with Judah Benjamin for the balance of the war. He knew most of the C.S. government's top people and was a close friend of Mary Chesnut.
This journal is a fascinating character study of one man caught up in the most turbulent period of American history.
Almost entirely Littleton's story in his own words.......2001-09-09
Littleton Washington's Journal is the assembled character study of Littleton Q. Washington, an ardent secessionist who served as a lieutenant in the Confederate Army at First Bull Run, and later worked with Judah Benjamin for the balance of the war. Though aptly edited by Douglas Gibboney for reader accessibility, and with informative historical notes, Littleton Washington's Journal is almost entirely Littleton's story in his own words. Highly recommended for Civil War buffs interested in seeing the Civil War from the perspective of one of its many soldiers.

a definite read.......2001-04-12
An unbelievable story of hope and strength! I couldn't put it down even though I started it already late at night--thank you for a wonderful book.
Poor writing.......2001-03-27
Odd layout style of this book is confusing, sections end in the middle of the page then start up again at the top of the next page. Many issues are brought up, but never resolved, for instance Ms Crowley envisons being bathed in blood and body parts, but we never find out why. Ms Crowley says her doctor tells her many fine analogies, but she doesn't share any of them with us. Book could use some serious editing.
KEEP THE FAITH AND FIGHT STRONG.......2000-06-12
THIS TITLE JUST FITS KATHLEEN CROWLEYS BOOK. NO MATTER WHAT SHE WENT THROUGH SHE KEPT THE FAITH AND FOUGHT STRONG! I RELATED WITH HER THROUGH THE WHOLE BOOK. SHE MADE ANOTHER CHRONIC PAIN SUFFERER(MYSELF) FEEL YOUR NOT THE ONLY ONE IN THE WORLD DEALING WITH THE MEDICAL PROFESSION AND COURT SYSTEM AND MOST OF ALL PAIN BY YOURSELF! I LOVED HER COURAGE AND STRENGTH THROUGH IT ALL. I ONLY WISH I COULD HAVE A WAY OF SPEAKING WITH HER NOW TO SEE HOW SHE IS DOING. IT WAS NEVER MENTIONED IN HER BOOK BUT IT SOUNDS AS IF SHE SUFFERS FROM REFLEX SYMPATHEIC DYSTROPHY ALL HER SYMPTOMS MATCH THAT DX. I HOPE AND PRAY ALL IS WELL WITH HER AND THANK HER IMMENSELY FOR BRINGING HER STORY TO OTHER CHRONIC PAIN SUFFERERS. AND MAKING ALL CHRONIC PAIN SUFFERS NOT FEEL SO ALONE. THANKYOU KATHLEEN CROWLEY!
Pretty wonderful memoir.......1999-05-18
I found The Day Room to be 80, no 90% terrific. The writer, who suffers with the chronic pain and depression that go along with it, is met with doors shut in her face by one professional after another. She does a nice job of conveying the sense of insanity, and eventually rage, that such treatment invokes. The people who occupy space and time with her along the way -- the spouse, the other patients, and such -- come to life in the book, and in the reader's mind. I was disappointed in the legal process -- in the outcome, in the lack of legal expertise (falsified records, and they weren't challenged with certified copies of the originals?), and a bit in the writing. But, overall, I found it a great read. As with one of the reviewers on the back cover, I wrapped it up in one sitting. Thank you for sharing your heart, your courage.
