Book Description
Methods of X-ray and Neutron Scattering in Polymer Science presents the basic theories underlying x-ray and neutron scattering--two of the most powerful tools for characterizing materials--and also covers the various techniques that have been developed for their application to the study of polymers. While there is a great deal of similarity between the x-ray and neutron scattering methods, the two were developed in different time periods by different groups of scientists, and as a result very distinct terminologies evolved to explain the same phenomena. In this unique text the two are presented together from the very beginning, with a consistent set of symbols and terminologies, so that students can become equally familiar with both from the outset. Also, to help students gain a unified view of diffraction, the distinction between wide-angle diffraction and small-angle scattering is postponed until late in the text. Methods of X-ray and Neutron Scattering in Polymer Science emphasizes basic concepts rather than details of specific techniques and derives relationships from first premises wherever possible. Beginning with coverage of the basic properties of x-rays and neutrons and their scattering from matter, it goes on to discuss methods of studying specific types of samples or properties. Topics covered include single-component crystalline and amorphous polymers; the small-angle scattering technique; binary, single-phase systems such as polymer blend and polymer solution; the technique of reflectivity measurement; and polymer dynamics by means of inelastic neutron scattering. A perfect introductory textbook for graduate and advanced undergraduate students in polymer science,Methods of X-ray and Neutron Scattering in Polymer Science also serves as a helpful self-study tool for polymer scientists seeking an introduction to scattering techniques. Further reading lists at the end of each chapter encourage readers to explore more advanced topics on their own.

Useful guide on scattering for Polymer Scientists .......2006-06-07
Ryoung-Joon Roe presents a handy reference and introduction to x-ray and neutron scattering, where emphasis is placed on using a terminology that helps the reader learn about both the techniques simultaenously. Scattering has served as one of the most important characterization tools for polymer community. This book outlines the basic mathematics and experimental details required to understand the structure and properties as revealed by these scattering methods in: crystalline and amorphous polymers, polymer solutions and blends, polymer dynamics and block copolymers. While emphasis is placed on demonstrating how all scattering shares similar theories and philosophy, the choice of several examples and applications of either techniques is used to remark on aspects peculiar to either X-ray studies or Neutron Scattering.
Since most serious students of polymer science are familiar with light scattering, the book would appeal them as perfect guide to familiarize themselves with limits and use of neutron and X-ray scattering. A more detailed discussion on Polymers and Neutron Scattering is found in the classic text by Julia S. Higgins and Henry C. Beno^it, while for Light Scatttering texts by Pecora & Berne and by Wyn Brown are essential references. Compared to those classic references, Roe's text will appear as more accessible to people seeking introduction to scattering methods. By the same token, it contains only the essence, the flavor of aspects of polymer behavior, say crystallization, surface studies or dynamics, and one will need to delve into the other texts if he seeks exhaustive discussion.

Product Description
This book is designed to critically review experimental findings on ionic polymers and colloidal particles and to prove a theoretical framework based on the Poisson-Boltzmann approach. Structure formation in ionic polymer solutions has attracted attention since the days of H. Staudinger and J. D. Bernal. An independent study on ionic colloidal dispersions with microscopy provided a compelling evidence of structure formation. Recent technical developments have made it possible to accumulate relevant information for both ionic polymers and colloidal particles in dilute systems. The outstanding phenomenon experimentally found is microscopic inhomogeneity in the solute distribution in macroscopically homogeneous systems. To account for the observation, the present authors have invoked the existence of the counterion-mediated attraction between similarly charged solute species, in addition to the widely accepted electrostatic repulsion.

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A179543. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The U.S. Navy uses the Aviation Selection Test Battery (ASTh) to identify those Student Naval Aviator (SNA) applicants most likely to succeed in flight training. Using classification and regression trees, this thesis concludes that individual answers to an ASTh subtest, the Biographical Inventory, are not good predictors of SNA primary flight grades. It also concludes that those SNA who score less than a 6 on the Pilot Biographical Inventory have a significantly higher disqualification rate in primary flight training than those SNA who score a 6 or higher. Those SNA who repeat the taking of the ASTh are more likely to disqualify from primary flight training than those SNA who pass it on the first attempt. Incidentally, significant differences exist in SNA performance and disqualification rates in Aviation Preflight Indoctrination among different racial groups. However, neither race nor gender is a significant factor in primary flight-training disqualification. Recommendations are provided to reduce the number of SNA entering the flight- training pipeline, if necessary, while significantly reducing the disqualification rate. Additionally, a method is given to identify those SNA most at risk of disqualifying from primary flight training.

It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A389043. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis examines the depot maintenance processes of naval H-6O helicopters. Budget and political climate issues are discussed. Aircraft Service Period Adjustment (ASPA) deferral rates, Standard Depot Level Maintenance (SDLM) turnaround time, depot maintenance direct labor and material costs, and projected backlog using depot requirements and funding are examined. Data analysis indicates a need for significant process improvements or radical changes to depot processes. The Integrated Maintenance Concept (IMC) will consolidate organizational and depot level maintenance at fleet locations. IMC offers several advantages over traditional depot maintenance methods. Using regression analysis, the direct costs of SDLMs conducted at the Pensacola Naval Aviation Depot from 1987 to 1995 were used to estimate direct costs of depot maintenance based on: aircraft age, the projected level of depot maintenance, and employment (operational versus training). Within the scope of this research, a weak correlation existed between the direct labor costs and aircraft age and employment as explanatory variables; direct material costs showed a higher correlation: for total direct costs, these two variables explained 34.4 percent of the variation. Incorporating additional explanatory variables, such as flight hours prior to SDLM, may improve the model. Finally, recommendations are made to facilitate the transition to Integrated Maintenance, emphasizing data collection requirements and data analysis techniques to better estimate maintenance and funding requirements.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The objective of this thesis is to quantitatively examine the effect of several institutional and non-institutional factors that have traditionally impacted Naval aviator retention. It uses a unique database that includes summarized continuation rate information for pilots from each subcommunity by year group and commissioning source. The effects of varying unemployment rates, air transportation industry hiring rates, aviation continuation pay (ACP) opportunities and changing minimum service requirement (MSR) policies are measured statistically to determine their relative significance in impacting aviator continuation rates. The study analyzed the continuation rate behavior between 1990 and 1996 for aviators in year groups 1984 through 1989. Results from the statistical analysis indicate that institutional factors such as changing MSR policies and ACP availability have a greater impact than non- institutional factors such as unemployment rates and air transportation industry hiring rates. Specifically, recent changes in MSR policies have been successful in increasing continuation rates while ACP has not been successful in increasing retention.

Book Description
The ability to thoroughly characterize polymer colloids has long been a cornerstone of their use in fundamental work. New techniques such as dielectric spectroscopy and neutron scattering are becoming increasingly important.
The contents of this book reflect the wide interest in the field of polymer colloids with chapters covering the preparation and properties of conducting particles, as well as composite particles and swellable particles. Many other materials such as proteins, polymers, polyelectrolytes, and surfactants interact strongly with the surface of polymer latex particles and new work on these aspects is covered, along with recent developments in the use of lattices.

Book Description
This book presents coherent and systematic coverage of the broad and dynamic field of free atom and cluster atom chemistry. The text provides a comprehensive overview of the current literature and describes the mostimportant experimental techniques developed since 1980 including bimetallic clusters/catalysts, carbon clusters (fullerenes) and trapped single atoms. Metal atoms, clusters, and particles are covered in sequence with the Periodic Table.
Book Description
The language of mathematics has proven over centuries of application to be an indispensable tool for the expression and analysis of real problems. With numerical, graphical, and theoretical methods, this book examines the relevance of mathematical models to phenomena ranging from population growth and economics to medicine and the physical sciences. In a book written for the intelligent and literate non-mathematician, Kalman aims at an understanding of the power and utility of quantitative methods rather than at technical mastery of mathematical operations. He shows first that mathematical models can serve a critical function in understanding the world, and he concludes with a discussion of the problems encountered by traditional algebraic assumptions in chaos theory. Though models can often approximate future events based on existing data and quantitative relationships, Kalman shows that the appearance of regularity and order can often be misleading. By beginning with quantitative models and ending with an introduction to chaos, Kalman offers a broad treatment of both the power and limitations of quantitatively-based predictions.

Book Description
This vivid diary of life in a Japanese internment camp during World War II examines the moral challenges encountered in conditions of confinement and deprivation.
Customer Reviews:
Shantung Compound.......2007-04-09
This book is a classic on people who were interned in China during WWII. I have used it in connection with the book I wrote, "Called to China: Attie Bostick's Life & Missionary Letters from China: 1900-1943," since Attie was interned in this camp near Weishien. This book provides a vivid description of the conditions there.
-Rebekah (Becky) E. AdamsCalled to China:Attie Bostick's Life & Missionary Letters From China: 1900-1943
A Kinder, Gentler "Lord of the Flies" .......2006-11-27
"For even saintly folk will act like sinners, Unless they have their customary dinners."
That's the theme of "Shantung Compound." It's the best sociology laboratory one can imagine. Take a diverse group of 1,500 Brits and Americans, shut them up in close quarters for two and one-half years in an internment camp, feed them barely enough to survive, let them rule themselves, and see what happens. That's what happened to the foreigners in the Japanese-controlled parts of China in World War II.
The situation at the internment camp in Shantung starts hopefully as the foreign internees elect a government, set up hospitals and kitchens, allocate space (9 feet by 4 and one-half feet per person), and establish a thriving black market. After that things go downhill. Some people won't work; others steal; and the community can't find any way to impose its will on the offenders. Missionaries comprise a large number of the internees but they are as lazy, morally obtuse, and uncooperative as many of the less savory members of the group. The most interesting and divisive moral issue comes up when the Americans internees receive food packages from the Red Cross. Should they share with the British or not? Another good story concerns the sex lives of the teenagers in the camp which became, to put it mildly, scandalous.
The author is a theologian and looks at both the moral and material issues. The book is not all bleak. The moral lapses and disputes of the internees do not destroy the community -- although one suspects than another year of internment would have seen that happen. One of the positive notes of the book is the character of Eric Liddell, the Olympic champion runner portrayed in "Chariot of the Gods" -- who is one of the few human beings in the book to come through as wholesomely good. (The author changes the names of all the internees mentions in the book but Liddell is easy to identify.) "Shantung Compound" is a classic of its kind and is perhaps the best book I have read on the behavior of human beings under stress.

A Probe to Your Faith.......2004-10-23
This book left me speechless and introspectively questioning the Christian faith I espouse. In Shantung Compound Gilkey, through his experience in the internment camp, stops the "program" of our spiritual doings and forces us to examine the conscience of our spirituality. His book has molded together spirituality, philosophy, psychology, and sociology--all of this together into a powerful delivery that demands a reconstitution of true religion in the hearts of seekers and believers alike. Even now I grapple for words to describe the book because it's just that powerful. Every Christian thinker must have this book as well as those who question Christianity. If anything it should restore faith in faith.
Survival under stress.......2001-12-02
Gilkey's academic liberalism is tested by the reality of the stress he observes as a mid-20's, very involved leader under prison conditions. His insights in the complex areas of law, food distribution, justice, work (his insight into lazy workers is very good), equality, theology, among other topics makes this book required reading for all managers, supervisors, teachers, religious leaders and lawyers. His associations with gifted intellects as well as self serving persons during his incarceration allowed him to validate his presuppositions. This is one of the most insightful books I've read in a long time. I now know why he is such an highly respected, revered teacher, mentor and theologian. His insight into the original sin of mankind is worth the price of the book! This book is truly a blessing.
Best sociology lesson ever written.......2001-11-13
This book should be required reading for every college student to better understand human nature and how people function when building a functional micro society from scratch.
