Computational Electrodynamics: The Finite-Difference Time-Domain Method, Third Edition
ASIN: 0780347471 |
Book Description
You can immediately have the power to perform electromagnetic simulation. If you have a fundamental understanding of electromagnetic theory and the knowledge of at least one high-level computer language, you can begin writing simple electromagnetic simulation programs after reading the first chapter of this book.
Electromagnetic Simulation Using the FDTD Method describes the power and flexibility of the finite-difference time-domain method as a direct simulation of Maxwell's equations. The FDTD method takes advantage of today's advanced computing power because its computational requirements increase linearly with the size of the simulation problem.
This book begins with a simple one-dimensional simulation and progresses to a three-dimensional simulation. Each chapter contains a concise explanation of an essential concept and instruction on its implementation into computer code. Projects that increase in complexity are included, ranging from simulations in free space to propagation in dispersive media. Peripheral topics that are pertinent to time-domain simulation, such as Z-transforms and the discrete Fourier transform, are also covered.
Electromagnetic Simulation Using the FDTD Method is written for anyone who would like to learn electromagnetic simulation using the finite-difference time-domain method. Appropriate as both a textbook and for self-study, this tutorial-style book will provide all the background you will need to begin research or other practical work in electromagnetic simulation.

Be careful.......2007-09-08
In the very beginning of the book there is some kind of a disclaimer, which states that the only purpose of the book is to enable the reader to do FDTD simulations in a reasonable amount of time. The book does exactly that. It has a lot of code examples with a lot of typos, which force you to carefully go through each line of the code trying to understand why it refuses to work. There is also a good example in the end of the book, which simulates a microstrip patch antenna, a very popular benchmark, used in numerous papers. Unfortunately, once you get it going and feel happy, getting exactly the results that are shown in the picture, you are bound to get miserable, since these results are wrong... Other then that, the book is ok.
very good book.......2006-01-29
I read this book which can be considered as avery good book for FDTD method especially it contains source code for the programs
Very thin and there are mistakes.......2004-03-12
Yes, this book could have been a contender. The field of FDTD has now reached a level of maturity so that it is both useful (very) and the literature no longer explains the details to a beginner. This book is good in that it does talk to the novice; however it has several problems.
First, there are a number of mistakes, and although they are obvious, they are also inexcusable. For example on page 6, eqns 1.14 and 1.15 there are numerous sign errors in the sub/superscripts. The second C program, which is a modification of the first, will not work as written! He forgot to initialize two of the new variables. Careless. For $115 the author and editor could have done a much better job. The book is only 165 pages long; so the editing/proofing should not have taken too long.
Second, the English is inexcusably poor. It sounds a lot like a direct translation of a conversation two graduate students might have at the board.
Third, the book gives very little other than what is needed to gain a limited understanding of the included C code.
All that said, it will get you off square-zero in a fairly short time. I strongly suggest that you check the book out from the library rather than making this expensive purchase.
After you spend a couple of days with this book you will be ready to tackle the class act of E&M FDTD books - Taflove & Hagness - this book has a whopping $135 price tag, but at least it weighs in at 850+ pages and gives a lot of detail.
Excellent book but with mistakes.......2003-08-03
Generally the book of Dennis M.Sullivan is a book that is a value for money. It really helps someone who would like to learn electromagnetic simulation with the FDTD method step by step.
The 1st chapter introduces you in 1D-FDTD and helps you understand the basics of 1D-FDTD in free space, simple ABCs,propagation in a dielectric and lossy dielectric medium.
The 2nd chapter continues with more complicated issues of 1-D FDTD such as simulation in frequency-dependent media and calculating the frequency dependent media with Fourier Transform.
The 3rd chapter introduces 2-D FDTD,implementation of the PML ABCs and propagation of a plane wave.
The 4th chapter learns you the 3-D FDTD and implementation of the PML in 3D which is really wonderful.
The 5th chapter gives 2 applications with FDTD(Simulation of microstrip antenna and calculation of the far field of an aperture antenna) and the 6th some other types of simulation.
The problem with the book is that the programs have some mistakes and you must spend a lot of time to find them.Personally i have developed all of them except for the patch antenna. If someone has found the mistakes in it and has the right program please send it tome in the email .......My advice is to buy this book!!!
Practical, but not detail explanation.......2001-04-25
This book is very good for the people who already have knowledge of FDTD and C language somehow. In other words, beginners will feel difficulty to read this book keeping what the auther is really try to talk about. The last two example cases are very useful. However, readers should find the way to present the data files that can be calculated using the sample codes such as MatLab. If you are a beginner, then use the book written by Hagness & Taflove for deep understanding of FDTD, and use this book for the practice before your specific application.

The classics of FD-TD method.......1999-02-09
A good text for studying basics of FD-TD method for Electromagnetics. Especially, the chapters about surface impedance & dispersive materials were useful for me. But some misprint keep out of sight, you have to read carefully.
Book Description
Claudia J. Kennedy retired as the Army's first female three-star general and the highest-ranking woman ever in that branch, overseeing 45,000 soldiers worldwide. During her 32-year career she witnessed the dramatic advances made by military women, and she was a long-time champion for fairness and equality in the Army. As she recounts her experiences in a male-dominated profession, beginning as a young Women's Army Corps officer in 1969, moving through her Pentagon service as a three-star general, and ending with retirement in 2000, General Kennedy charts the struggles and triumphs in her inspiring life and career.
Customer Reviews:
Her denial ridden delusional 15 minutes of fame........2007-08-09
I read this book as a retired Army officer, and I was enlisted before I became an officer. First, the book is terrible. I might suggest reading it only as a historical document. This kind of writing would not get you through college. Only Colin Powell had a worse author. Schwartzkoff's author set the standard for works of this type. Kennedy unwittingly appears incredibly naive in her book. When as a full colonel she has to ask a JAG officer several times about the role and extent of her authority before she confronts a lower ranking other service officer reveals her to be inept and incapable. I knew better than this as a captain. However, the story continues, and she appears as a mindless drone who only is sad and pathetic. Her soundbite claim to fame is "selfless service." Too bad it sounds like a cheap rationalization and justification for her not having a life outside of the Army. I think that that was the best she could come up with, and that was merely something someone probably once wrote on her OER, and she never forgot it. It is quite obvious that the Army kept promoting her to keep her unrealistically representing the face of women in the Army when there are legions of more deserving female soldiers who deserve more than this rag. The book is uninteresting, and she even more so.
Substance?.......2007-04-19
The reviews seem to fall into two opposing groups, those who think the book is a great commentary on management and women in management, and those of the old hard core military that think a soldier must have been in combat to be called a soldier. I only bother to add my two cents because it has a little different perspective. I thought the book was interesting, easy and enjoyable to read. But then we get to the issue of substance and I am absolutely appalled, there is none! As a management text it is trivial, there is nothing of and real substance, but so what, I wasn't looking for management advice, I read it because it was written by a woman who was the head of signal intel in the army and a Lt. Gen. at that. I thought it might give some special insight into the world of intel because of the unique perspective a woman might have. What I found was nothing, absolutely nothing. Here is a person responsible for one of the most important functions in the military today and she seems about as well qualified as Mary Kay would be for Sec. of Defense. None of her background seems to indicate that she should have achieved this position. She has nothing to say about what is going on in the intel world. I know she can't say much about the day to day activity but I thought she would have some opinion on something more than sexual harassment. It seems to me that every serious woman officer, who has had to prove herself above and beyond to be taken seriously should be highly offended at the impression this officier leaves with the reader about both the Army and women in the Army.
Please Don't Call Yourself A Soldier..........2006-06-15
Not as poorly written as some reviews have said, although there is nothing in this book I agree with.
Please don't call yourself a soldier, LTG Kennedy. You never served with the grunts, cav troopers, tankers or gun bunnies. You were never near any shot and shell. You were a bureaucrat, a chair-borne ranger, who with other militant feminists helped inviscerate the United States Army and transform it into something between Gidget and Camp Grenada.
If you want to read the story of a real warrior, buy About Face by David Hackworth, or Dick Winters' new book. Company Commander is another fine work, as is Hal Moore's classic, We Were Soldiers, Once and Young.
Very close to home.......2003-07-24
I had the great pleasure of meeting General Kennedy when she was still a captain. Even then, she displayed an amazing dedication to her troops - male and female alike. Of all the officers I worked with over my military career, General Kennedy stands out as the best of the best.
General Kennedy's story is unique, but it's also the story of today's military - right down to the barenuckled, back room politics that have always been evident in political decision making. Far more interesting is her unswerving loyalty to the Army and her country despite the petty rumormongering and questionable tactics used against her.
One thing is certain: General Kennedy is a soldier's general. Her story is the story of today's army and the end of the obsession with personal power that's dominated the military since World War II. This is a story, not just of the coming of age of a woman soldier - but the coming of age of the US military.
Generally Revealing.......2003-04-01
I highly recommend this book for people who want to understand the perceptions of powerful, influential feminist elites, and how we might have gotten to where we are today--female soldiers coming home from war in body bags.

Book Description
Pasteur's stunning career has attracted a host of biographies, but this book, written by a distinguished French-born microbiologist, is among the best. Dubos displays a deep appreciation for the power and enduring significance of Pasteur's scientific work. His graceful writing style allows him to convey the excitement and significance of even the most technical aspects of Pasteur's work. Now, updated to the present day by the distinguished microbiologist, Thomas D. Brock, the book also has a new forward by Pasteur scholar Gerald L. Geison that places the book in historical context. More than forty illustrations and tables have been added, as well as a glossary and additional text. For high school and college undergraduate students, as well as the general reader, this is the ideal introduction to the life of Louis Pasteur.
