      Book Description

The future will reveal an ever increasing demand for crystals having highly specific properties while, at the same time, crystal growth systems will come to be increasingly restricted by environmental and budgetary constraints. If the technology is based on trial and error and the science restricted to irrelevant model systems, these demands will come into conflict. But if technological developments incorporate scientific understanding, then environmental, financial, material and fundamental perspectives often turn out to run surprisingly parallel. It is this integration of approaches to which Science and Technology of Crystal Growth aspires. Starting from basic physical and chemical knowledge, the reader is encouraged to build to the state of the art level, assisted by the many thousands of references to the original literature. The aspects covered range from mass crystallization technology to numerical modeling, from biological materials to fundamental physics, and from chemical reaction dynamics to the nonlinear dynamics of pattern formation.
Audience: An ideal starting point for postgraduate researchers and process engineers. A high-level, interdisciplinary approach to crystallization.

                    Book Description

The fullerenes, hailed as one of the discoveries of the century, have created whole new fields of organic/organometallic chemistry and of physics. Together with the related nanotubes, they hold the promise of providing new materials with novel chemical and solid state properties. The cost of the basic fullerenes is now such that research into them is feasible for very many chemists.

This book describes the fundamental aspects of fullerene chemistry. Following brief background on the discovery, basic fullerene nomenclature, and relevant properties (including those of endohedral fullerenes and nanotubes), there are chapters describing the rules governing the addition patterns, and each of the reaction types with representative examples. Leading references are given to key papers describing individual reactions and phenomena.

5 out of 5 stars Lecture Notes on Fullerene Chemistry.......2001-10-31

The book is a true complement to the well-known survey
of fullerene science by M. S. Dresselhaus, G. Dresselhaus
and P. C. Eklund. Combined together, they give a
representative picture of fullerene science before the
century end. The book by Roger Taylor is a systematic and
comprehensive text on fullerene chemistry that fills a
                    gap in the fullerene literature.

The handbook is well organized - is divided into
fourteen main chapters and many sub-chapters, covering
essentially all the established aspects of fullerene
chemistry. After brief background on the discovery,
structure, properties and nomenclature, the rules
governing the addition patterns are discussed.
The remaining chapters deal with particular
                    reaction types and systems.

Hydrogenation was the first reaction carried
out with C60 and its various experimental
                    and theoretical aspects are comprehensively
                    discussed. The following two chapters
                    treat reductions by electron additions,
                    reactions with electrophiles and nucleophiles.
Radical reactions are primarily described as
halogenations and a special attention is paid
                    to fluorination. Nucleophilic substitutions of
fullerenes are discussed especially as ways
for production of fullerenols. The next
chapter deals with cycloadditons, i.e., the most
                    frequently studied fullerene reactions. This
very comprehensive survey is followed by a
                    short report on oxidation.

The last four chapters describe selected
classes of fullerene compounds rather than
particular reactions. This part starts with
                    inorganic and organometallic derivatives of
                    fullerenes. Various polymeric structures
                    with fullerenes then follow. Heterofullerenes
are represented by borafullerenes and especially
azafullerenes. The volume ends with a brief
survey of the chemistry of endohedral fullerenes
(though incar-fullerenes is suggested as a more
                    systematic name).

The book has 268+xiv pages, well selected illustrations
and ample references. It can serve as an excellent
textbook for graduate and also undergraduate courses
as well as a standard reference monograph for active
researchers. The book is published by Imperial College
                    Pressand distributed
by World Scientific Publ. Co. .

                      Book Description

AntiPatterns: Identification, Refactoring, and Management catalogs 48 bad management practices and environments common to software development, IT, and other organizations. The authors cover antipatterns of management, along with environmental/cultural antipatterns and personality antipatterns/phenotypes. Through the classification of these harmful practices, you will be able to correctly identify problems in your own work environment, and take action to correct them. The authors apply their extensive work and consultative experience, as well as the experience of the many professionals that they have known. This approach leads to a realistic treatment of antipattern concepts. Written for a wide audience of practitioners, the authors avoid a scholarly style, instead infusing the text with entertaining "gadgets," including rambunctious and ribald sidebars, cartoons, stories, and jokes, as well as names for their antipatterns that are at once visual, iconic, humorous, and memorable. Following introductory material describing some management theory and how humans behave individually and in groups, the text provides the catalog of management and environmental antipatterns. The book then offers general advice on overcoming bad practices through successful interaction with clients, customers, peers, supervisors, and subordinates.

                      Book Description

COMBAT AND DEATH, SACRIFICE AND HONOR
Maurice Jacques served for thirty years with the U.S. Marine Corps, nearly six of them in combat. An accomplished infantryman, parachutist, recon patroller, marksman, combat swimmer, and record-setting drill instructor, Jacques personifies the hard-fought, hard-won legacy of the Marines.
Now, with the help of Bruce Norton, he recounts the lessons learned in blood and the courage tested under fire--from the razor-backed hills and icy cold of Korea to the steamy, VietCong-infested jungles of 'Nam. In this tough, hard-charging narrative, he reveals the emotion and chaos of close combat and the sacrifice and valor that have made the Marines legendary around the world.
During his long, colorful career, Jacques held the position of regimental sergeant major in three different commands and was awarded two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. Maurice Jacques is a true warrior, unique as the Marines are unique, expected to train harder, fight harder, sacrifice more--and proud to be part of the pain, the pride, and the triumph that is USMC.
"A must read! The story of a true warrior with close to 50 months of combat."
--Lt. Col. Oliver North, USMC (Ret.)

                      4 out of 5 stars Great Biography.......2003-08-29

Sergeant Major Jacques was my 1st Sgt my last three months in Vietnam (Bravo Company, 1st Recon Bn). At the time I had no idea he had such extensive combat experience. I'm glad he made the effort to write this book. Educators who bear the responsibility of presenting the history of the Vietnam War to their students would do well to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars SERGEANT MAJOR; THE WAY IT USED TO BE!!!.......2000-08-27

Sergeant Major, U. S. Marines is the biography of Maurice Jacques, who rose from the rank of Private to Sergent Major of Marines during his 30-years of honorable service to his Corps and Country. Written by Major Bruce 'Doc' Norton, who served in combat with Jacques during the Vietnam War, this book follows Jacque's life from his upbringing in Massachusetts to his days at Parris Island. His post-World War II learning was handled by Marine veterans such as Colonel "Chesty" Puller and General Edward A. Craig. His three tours of combat during Vietnam tempered Jacques into a true combat veteran and teacher. Unfortuantely, there are no Marines with Jacque's experiences serving in today's Marine Corps, but his "lessons learned" and his documented dedication to his Corps is the stuff that legends are made from. Segreant Major is a great book; well-researched, well-written and totally accurate. Credit to Major 'Doc' Norton for a great story about one of our Corps true heroes. 5 Stars for this one!

5 out of 5 stars One Great book that defines the title... MARINE!.......1999-05-07

If I had to select one book that accurately defines what it takes to become and stay on as a career Marine, this is the Book. Jacques grew up poor and uneduacted, like so many Marines, but he found a home and his "calling" in the Corps. Norton does a masterful job in describing Jacques' career, to include wonderful descriptions of Marines (and Jacques) in combat during the Korean War and during his 3 tours of duty in Vietnam. I would make this a "must read" for anyone considering a career in the Corps, enlisted man or officer. Well done!!

5 out of 5 stars An extremly well written account of a soldiers life.......1999-03-17

If Maurice himself were writting this book himself he could not have done a better job. Its a wonder why this book isn't at a higher rank. This book gets five stars all around.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Marines and Military Historians!!!.......1998-10-30

Sergeant Major US Marines, is without a doubt, one of the best books about the Marines, I have ever read. Thirty years of service, including 57 months of combat during the Korean War and the Vietnam War, explain, in detail, what NCO leadership is all about. To earn the title "Marine" is no easy accomplishment; to rise from the grade of Marine Private to Sergeant Major is acomplished by only a handful. Major Norton has done it again, with another 5-star book on the Corps and those who have made it great. Go by the book.

                            Book Description

While quietly mourning her husband on the very street corner where he was killed in a motorcycle accident, Jude was run down by an impaired driver who left her with a serious brain injury. As a result she lost the care of her children, legal autonomy, important aspects of her health, and a sense of self. She was so angry that life had heaped these insults upon the indisputable fact of her rapidly advancing Huntington's disease that she vehemently rejected offers of professional help--until she met Sol Mogerman, a counselor hired by her insurance company.

The first part of this book gives a session by session account of the counseling journey that led to Jude's forgiveness of a world that injured her and acceptance of her place in it as bearer and example of unconditional love. The second part puts forth the ideas, attitudes and skills that Sol engaged with Jude in their successful process of rehabilitation counseling.

"The Story of Jude is the book on rehabilitation counseling Carl Rogers would have written had he gained the depth of understanding Sol has acquired from the experience of his own head injury... In keeping with the spirit of rehabilitation counseling, the book is highly accessible and practical. The writing is clear, direct, and virtually jargon-free - no mean feat for a book on counseling."--Allan Wade Ph.D.

"This book is a landmark in the field of rehabilitation counseling. Mogerman's unpretentious style and ease of presentation brings to life a complex subject in a manner that is at once comprehensive, demystifying and inspiring."--Richard Routledge M.A.
