Supersymmetric Gauge Field Theory and String Theory (Graduate Student Series in Physics)
D. Bailin , and Alexander Love Manufacturer: Taylor & Francis ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0750302674 |
Book Description
Designed as a sequel to the authors' Introduction to Gauge Field Theory, Supersymmetric Gauge Field Theory and String Theory introduces first-year graduate students to supersymmetric theories, including supergravity and superstring theories. Starting with the necessary background in quantum field theory, the book covers the three key topics of high-energy physics. The emphasis is on practical calculations rather than abstract generalities or phenomenological results. Where possible, the authors show how to calculate, connecting the theoretical with the phenomenological. While the field continues to advance and grow, this book addresses the basic theory at the core and will likely remain relevant even if more advanced ideas change.

A great introduction to supersymmetry and string theory.......2001-07-22
String theory in Bailin & Love is done in a similar fashion as the susy: lots of words without the messy calculation. B&L don't bother with conformal field theory at all and use basically the "old covariant quantization". Once again though, B&L is a great thing to be reading as a companion to Green Schwarz Witten or as a companion to Polchinski.
In the end, Bailin & Love is a great place to begin learning about supersymmetry and string theory. I read it after a year of quantum field theory and found it very quick and easy to read. Bailin & Love does a good job of getting the reader in a good position to read the more advanced texts (Wess & Bagger, Weinberg for susy and GSW and Polchinski for strings). Unfortunately, there are many typos in the equations. Corrections can be found at the author's page ...

Chern-Simons Theory, Matrix Models, and Topological Strings (International Series of Monographs on Physics)
Marcos Marino Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0198568495 |
Book Description
In recent years, the old idea that gauge theories and string theories are equivalent has been implemented and developed in various ways, and there are by now various models where the string theory / gauge theory correspondence is at work. One of the most important examples of this correspondence relates Chern-Simons theory, a topological gauge theory in three dimensions which describes knot and three-manifold invariants, to topological string theory, which is deeply related to Gromov-Witten invariants. This has led to some surprising relations between three-manifold geometry and enumerative geometry. This book gives the first coherent presentation of this and other related topics. After an introduction to matrix models and Chern-Simons theory, the book describes in detail the topological string theories that correspond to these gauge theories and develops the mathematical implications of this duality for the enumerative geometry of Calabi-Yau manifolds and knot theory. It is written in a pedagogical style and will be useful reading for graduate students and researchers in both mathematics and physics willing to learn about these developments.

Cosmology in Gauge Field Theory and String Theory (Graduate Student Series in Physics)
D. Bailin , and Alexander Love Manufacturer: Taylor & Francis ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0750304928 |
Book Description
Cosmology in Gauge Field Theory and String Theory focuses on the cosmological implications of the gauge theories of particle physics and of string theory. The book first examines the universe's series of phase transitions in which the successive gauge symmetries of the higher-temperature phase were spontaneously broken after the big bang, discussing relics of these phase transitions, more generic relics (baryons, neutrinos, axions), and supersymmetric particles (neutralinos and gravitinos). The author next studies supersymmetric theory, supergravity theory, and the constraints on the underlying field theory of the universe's inflationary era. The book concludes with a discussion of black hole solutions of the supergravity theory that approximates string theory at low energies and the insight that string theory affords into the microscopic origin of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. Cosmology in Gauge Field Theory and String Theory provides a modern introduction to these important problems from a particle physicist's perspective. It is intended as an introductory textbook for a first course on the subject at a graduate level.

Quantum Aspects of Gauge Theories, Supersymmetry, and Unification: Proceedings of the Second International Conference Held in Corfu, Greece, 20-26 September 1998 (Lecture Notes in Physics)
Manufacturer: Springer-Verlag Telos ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540660054 |
Book Description
The articles in this book are written versions of talks presented at a conference organized by the TMR network in Corfu. The main theme of the conference was the interconnection between string theory and gauge theory. These very recent developments draw from many aspects of string theory, supergravity and supersymmetric gauge field theory. For students starting their research there is a great deal of background material that they have to absorb in order to be able to follow current developments. With this in mind the editors have included pedagogical lectures on background material and recent developments. Extensive lecture notes by Bernard de Witt, Renate Kallosh, Robbert Dijkgraaf, Michael Green, Eliezer Rabinovici and John Schwarz make these proceedings a valuable reference for a long time to come. The book addresses researchers as well as students.

Andrew Foote: Civil War Admiral on Western Waters (Library of Naval Biography)
Spencer C. Tucker Manufacturer: US Naval Institute Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1557508208 |
Book Description
This biography traces the life and career of one of the U.S. Navy's first admirals, Andrew Hull Foote. As flag officer of the Union's western naval forces, Foote was a key figure in the February 1862 Union victories at Forts Henry and Donelson in Tennessee and helped open the Confederate heartland to the Union. Later he shared in the victory at Island No. 10, an action that opened the upper Mississippi River to the Union. In this revealing portrait, Spencer Tucker describes Foote as emblematic of a period of great change in the American navy. Although very much an officer schooled in the tradition of the Old Navy, Foote considered himself first and foremost a staunch Christian and agent of Divine Will. An ardent social reformer, he crusaded zealously for abolition of the daily grog ration in the navy, and during his command of the brig Perry in the African squadron, he also became a leading advocate of the government's use of forceful measures to end the slave trade. In the 1850s Foote's career exemplified America's emerging international policy in the Far East when, in support of U.S. interests in China, he led a shore party to destroy coastal forts that had fired on U.S. ships.
