Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

A fascinating collection of the pictures, figures, and diagrams that chemists create to explain their craft

In A Chemical History Tour, Arthur Greenberg took readers on a wild romp through the history of chemistry, introducing the unique characters, sometimes bizarre theories, and novel experiments that ultimately produced the modern science. Now Greenberg returns with more tales of chemistry glory, lovingly chronicling the extraordinary artwork that alchemists and chemists have produced in their pursuit of understanding the nature of matter in The Art of Chemistry: Myths, Medicines, and Materials.

The Art of Chemistry employs 187 figures (including 16 full-color plates) to illuminate 72 essays on the mythical origins, wondrous experiments, and adventurous explorers in the annals of chemistry. Greenberg divides his delightful study into eight sections:

Each section tracks chemistry's incremental progress from myth to modern science, featuring the figures and diagrams that early chemists used to explain their craft. Along the way, readers will meet the deadly basilisk and the fabulous phoenix that populated the lore of pre-modern chemistry, learn the contributions to chemistry of the American natural philosopher Benjamin Franklin, and encounter Antoine Lavoisier, the father of modern chemistry and perhaps France's greatest economist.

Greenberg also examines our fundamental connections with science through two personal essays, one on an adolescent friend who improbably (but perhaps inevitably) became a world-renowned entomology professor and the other on his quest to discover his own chemical heritage. The Art of Chemistry is sure to inform and entertain anyone interested in our eternal quest to know the natural world.

5 out of 5 stars More Laughs---Chemical Heritage magazine.......2003-03-13

Colin Russell once made a television film for the UK's Open University in which he demonstrated some of Edward Frankland's work in a mock-up laboratory built in the studio. Under the powerful studio lights, and in the film itself, the glass apparatus gleamed seductively, leading me to reflect on the wonderfully photogenic nature of chemistry. The visual appeal and power of alchemical paintings, symbols and emblems was elegantly captured by John Read over 50 years ago in his splendid book, The Alchemist in Life, Literature and Art (1947). As far as the ideas and practice of chemistry are concerned, however, the economics of publishing has usually dictated that narrative should dominate over art. There have been attempts at greater pictorial generosity. The scholarly pre-war A Pictorial History of Chemistry (1939) by the pharmaceutical historians F. Ferchl and A. Suessenguth has long been a collector's item, but more recently the organic chemist and bibliophile, Arthur Greenberg, produced the light-hearted A Chemical History Tour: Picturing Chemistry from Alchemy to Modern Molecular Science (2000). (See rev. CH 19, Spring 2001) Primed by the deserved success of the latter, Greenberg again whets our visual appetites with a companion piece that provides another well-stocked gallery of pictures drawn from title-pages, tables and diagrams, cigarette/baseball cards and art works. These are used to illustrate three predominant features of the discipline's intellectual and experimental development -its myths, its medical connections, and its primary concern with materials.
Although one of the author's aims is didactic - to help non-scientists understand how science works and to show how chemistry was done before it became largely hidden in black boxes - the predominant purpose (as with the former volume) is to entertain. The format and style are identical to the Chemistry History Tour: 188 illustrations (19 in color) and 72 essays. However, whereas previously the essays were elaborate captions to explain the pictures, in this sequel the illustrations serve to illuminate the essays that form a delightful "random walk through chemistry's imagery." The generously-sized reproductions have been selected from his own library, as well as that of fellow bibliophile, Roy G. Neville, and the Othmer Library of CHF. The essays, roughly signposted from chemistry's spiritual and mythological past through the twentieth century, are essentially playful and satirical, and sometimes earthy in humor.
As with his previous book, there is material here in plenty for the chemist and bibliophile as well as for the "amiable historian" (Greenberg's wily term for the critical historian). In my own case, I was intrigued by his perceptive remark about a slower process of metamorphosis replacing stories of the instantaneous transformation of people and things in the twelfth century. I noted a primitive fume cupboard in a print from Johann Kunckel's Ars vitraria experimentalis (1679). There is a valuable comparison between affinity and periodic tables. It is challenging to have Greenberg's opinion that in 1853 Jules Pelouze and Edmond Fremy published the most beautiful textbook of chemistry ever written (Notions générale de chimie) in contrast to the awfully dull Chemia Courtata ("compressed chemistry", 1875) by the Montreal pharmacist A. H. Kollmyer. He also gives a much more complete discussion than I have seen before of the clairvoyant occult chemistry of the theosophists Anna Besant and Charles Leadbeater. As an old fan of Prout's hypothesis, I was also educated by Greenberg's observation that the speculation would never have been possible if the ratio of protonium to deuterium were 80:20 and not 99.98:0.014. Finally, I can't wait to find a copy of a novel new to me: Edwin Herbert Lewis, White Lightning (1923) whose 92 chapters are named after the elements and sequelled in order of their atomic numbers.
Idiosyncratic, self-indulgent and even corny, Greenberg believes chemistry to be fun. It is much to be hoped that The Art of Chemistry, like A Chemical History Tour, will find its way into school and college libraries and encourage a new generation of students to laugh all the way to the lab.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding essays on the history and nature of chemistry.......2003-01-10

The Art Of Chemistry: Myths, Medicines And Materials by Arthur Greenberg (Department of Chemistry, College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, University of New Hampshire, Durham, New Hampshire) is an impressive, scholarly compilation of 72 outstanding essays on the history and nature of chemistry, ranging from myths about the origins of this fascinating area of science, down to great watershed experiments performed by dedicated pioneers in the field of chemistry. An informed and informative history which is superbly illustrated with 187 figures (including 16 full-color plates), The Art Of Chemistry is a truly fascinating survey and inquiry into the origins of a science that has substantially contributed throughout the years toward human advancement and civilization. The Art Of Chemistry is a very highly recommended addition to any academic Science History collection.

      Book Description

In the last 40 years geophysicists have found that it is possible to construct images and even determine important physical characteristics of rocks that can yield information about oil and gas bearing structures in the earth. To make these images and extract this information requires the application of an advanced understanding of the mathematical physics of wave propagation. The oil and gas industry labels a major collection of the necessary seismic data processing methods by the name seismic "migration".
This text ist the first to treat many kinds of migration in a unified mahtematical way. The audience is mathematically oriented geophysicists or applied mathematicians working in the field of "inverse scattering imaging". The text can serve as a bridge between the applied math and geophysics community by presenting geophysicists with a practical introduction to advanced engineering mathematics, while presenting mathematicians with a window into the world of the mathematically sophistiated geophysicist.

        Book Description

Dan Hyland, as a boy growing up in the city of New Brunswick, New Jersey from 1930-1938, saw the last boats being locked through the Delaware and Raritan Canal. He knew the old lock keepers and people who lived in the abandoned barges along the canal. The Raritan River and the D.& R. Canal provided recreation that was both exciting and extremely dangerous. Dan rode the ice flows on the Raritan after city work crews dynamited the frozen river in the early spring. He met strange and colorful people with names like "Corker Pete" and "Two-Cent Itszi." Dan and his buddies pulled a lot of stunts, caused mischief, and had run-ins with waterfront bullies. He enjoyed a free and virtually unsupervised boy's life. Money was nearly non-existent, so Dan and his friends pooled their resources, skills, and imaginations to find ways of earning money to go to the movies and acquire their play equipment. They learned how to capitalize on the neighborhood bootleggers and traveling junkmen. "River Rats: Growing Up on the Raritan River" is a memoir of the Great Depression. The stories are upbeat and at times humorous, reminiscent of the exploits of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn.

Although Archibald Cox is best remembered as the special prosecutor whom President Nixon fired in the infamous "Saturday Night Massacre" for his investigation into Watergate, Ken Gormley's biography reveals the full extent of Cox's distinguished career as a public servant. Starting out as a clerk for Learned Hand, Cox went on to become a professor at Harvard Law School and an advisor to then-senator John F. Kennedy. When Kennedy became president, he appointed Cox to the position of solicitor general, where he argued before the Supreme Court in some of the vital civil rights cases of the era. And then, of course, there was the Watergate investigation; Gormley recounts in fascinating detail the wrangling between the Justice Department and the Oval Office over Nixon's tapes, drawing upon unpublished documents and interviews with key participants.

In an era when special prosecutors have become common fixtures in controversial news stories, Gormley's portrait reveals how one man carried out the responsibilities of that office with such integrity and class as to rally a nation behind him.

By October 1973 special prosecutor Archibald Cox was tracing the Watergate cover-up to the Oval Office. President Nixon demanded that he stop. In the "Saturday Night Massacre" two heads of the Justice Department quit before Nixon found a subordinate (Robert Bork) willing to fire Cox. Immediately public opinion swung against the president and turned Cox into a hero-seemingly Washington's last honest man. Cox's life was distinguished well before that Saturday night. He had been a clerk for the legendary judge Learned Hand, a distinguished professor at Harvard Law School, and the Solicitor General, arguing many Supreme Court cases. He exemplified what we want lawyers to be. At its core Archibald Cox is the story of a Yankee who went to Washington but refused to leave his principles behind.

4 out of 5 stars Epitome of Ethics and Professionalism.......2007-05-03

I read this book for my Legal Profession class as a first year law student. I enjoyed the book very much. The details of Cox's life were very interesting in addition to what he was most famous for (Watergate). Cox is an excellent embodiment of ethics and professionalism and is a great person which all lawyers should look to as an example.

5 out of 5 stars A Terrific Biography Of An Extraordinary Individual!.......2000-08-16

In a time curiously bereft of public heroes, the life and achievements of Professor Archibald Cox of Harvard University stands in bold relief as a reminder of what a man of singular dedication, an ethic of public service, and a lifetime of professional integrity can do to change the course of history. This wonderful biography by law professor Ken Gormley recounts the life and accomplishments of this extraordinary person, a man who stood face to face in opposition to one of the most popular and powerful Presidents of the 20th century and, to his undying credit, never blinked. It is a riveting tale of man whose allegiance was to the simple notion that our nation is one ruled by law and not by individual personality. It also tells the captivating story of man who spent a lifetime serving the American people, living by his principles, and passing them on so memorably as a law professor at Harvard University.

Cox appears everywhere in the pantheon of modern American accomplishment during his more than sixty year career. He first clerked for the legendary Supreme Court Justice Learned Hand in the midst of the Depression before embarking on a course as a pioneer in public labor law, soon to be asked to serve the federal executive, first as a Special Assistant to the National Defense Mediation Board, and then with the Solicitor General's office. Finally, shortly after the end of the war, he accepted a teaching position with Harvard Law School, where he was destined to become a leading legal expert in labor law. It was in this capacity that he eventually became an advisor to John F. Kennedy, a Harvard graduate and the junior Senator from Massachusetts.

When Kennedy won the Presidency in 1960, he appointed Cox the position of Solicitor General, giving Cox the opportunity to argue brilliantly before the Supreme Court as the Government's advocate for civil rights reform. He also worked behind the scenes as a mediator during Harvard's internal student troubles in the late 1960s, trying to mend the huge political, philosophical, and educational issues leading to such dynamic student unrest. Yet all of these accomplishments and lifetime enterprises pale in the face of his later involvement as the Justice Department's Special Prosecutor in that newly created post to independently investigate the troubling issues surrounding the Nixon administrations participation in a wide range of suspect activities.

As such, he was a key figure in the unraveling of the Watergate scandal as well as the subsequent Congressional investigations and impeachment proceedings against Richard Nixon. Instructed to conform, heal to Nixon's dictates or else, to cease and desist from his pursuit of the White House tapes, Cox quite simply refused to be cowed. Of course, he was then fired in the infamous Saturday Night Massacre, in which both Attorney General and his assistant publically refused to fire Cox and themselves resigned from the Administration. Republican toady, Solicitor General Robert Bork had no such scruples or compunctions, and promptly fired Cox. It was this single event of firing Cox that awoke the Congress and the nation regarding Nixon's viability, and this subsequently changed the political equation that eventually led to Nixon's own resignation in August of 1974.

This is an entertaining, absorbing, and quite literate book, one that takes a fond and pensive look at that most rare of human individuals, a man guided by his dedication to principles and the rule of law. It is also a wonderful up-close and personal look at life inside the confines of the well-furnished parlors of privilege Cox has habituated all his life, based on birth, wealth, and, of course, his extraordinary ability. It is a rare open and honest look at the realities of how America works, often on the quite undemocratic basis of where one happens to go to college and professional study, upon who one knows, and by how well one can rise to the expectations and rules of conduct prevailing in the power elite. This is a splendid book about a rare and admirable man, and one most people can learn from reading. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars an outstanding book, about an outstanding man.......1999-08-22

An outstanding insight into the life of Cox, which goes far beyond his Watergate notoriety, yet still provides a wealth of info about Watergate, as well.

5 out of 5 stars A role model for all attorneys........1999-03-18

The legal profession has been sinking ever lower in public opinion polls. Archibald Cox's life and character should serve as an aspirational role model for all lawyers. Cox was a participant in may of the major events of the middle third of the twentieth century, and through quiet integrity and commitment he helped shape the consequences of many of those events. Too often the biographies of quiet men have all the appeal of reading the phone directory, but Professor Gormley brings not only the events, but Cox and his character to life. I read this book as an attorney at mid-career, and it inspired me. We do have heros in the profession. There are those in the profession who find success in achievement rather than acquiring money or exploiting self-promotion. After reading this book, I think that this is a man I admire. To most of the public and to many lawyers, the television sterotype is the legal profession. It is not, but the profession would be improved by each of us learning from great lives. Perhaps as an adjunct to ethics courses and CLE lectures, law schools could include in the first year curriculum a legal biography class and state bar associations could require annually that each attorney read a selected legal biography. This book should be among the first to be read by attorneys, professors and students alike. [Unfortunately, there may be those who would promote the books by or about the hucksters and charlatans as "heros" of the profession].

4 out of 5 stars Every lawyer should read this book - a career to aspire to........1999-01-03

This book is not just Watergate revisited. It spans the amazing career of a model lawyer. The book provides insight into important moments in labor, political and legal history, from Mr. Cox's clerkship with Learned Hand, through his service on Truman's Wage Stabilization Committee, to his role with Comman Cause -- and including, of course, Watergate. The book is extensively researched, and includes numerous interviews with key players in Mr. Cox's career. Mr. Cox is Atticus Finch in government. His work, brought out in this book, is a reminder to lawyers that carrying that JD implies a duty to serve.
