Those who have been involved in chromatography for some timewill likely remember the book by Daniel Knapp, Handbook of AnalyticalDerivitization . This book is an excellent resource for exploring derivitazation reactions by GC, GC-MS and HPLC. The focus on this current volume is on HPLC and CE so those interested in GC and GC-MS should continue to refer to Knapp's book on this subject. This book by Lunn and Hellwig is an excellent addition to the literature. It is almost 1800 pages long with several appendixes including one on reagent types, formula names including a citation in the book where the particular reagent or chemical was used. There is also an appendix "Bibliography of Related References " that includes information on compound types not included in the main text. All of the appendixes are welcome additions to the book. The book is organized according to the functional group that is derivatized starting with acyl halide and ending with thiosulfate. Each entry includes the chemical structure involved in the reaction, the sample matrix, analyte, sample preparation, HPLC variables, chromatogram, key word (s) and reference(s). Additionally, should the sample be able to be analyzed by CE, that information is also provided. This books contains a wealth of information and reflects the heroic amount of work that has gone into it's preparation. In the introductory material, the authors provide the sources they used for searching the literature and indicate that the period searched was from 1978- present. A list of abbreviations and suppliers of reagents is also provided. In addition to the printed book, a searchable CD is also included. The CD provides similar information to that found in the book with search strategies straightforward and easy to execute. The entire package is excellent and highly recommended for it's breadth of coverage on this topic. This package should be available to all who are involved in this type of work.

An expansive tour of existing statistical methodologies used in microarray data analysis from contributed experts. What it does is deeply explore what people are using nowadays, cites references in each chapter beautifully, and gives the reader a solid footing as to the pros and cons of each technique presented. Each chapter delves deep enough, and by citing references extensively, one can go seek further detail from the source.
IMHO, this is probably one of the most professionally done books out there. By that I mean there is no fluff, just high quality content across the board. The intended audience is those having some computational background, particularly in statistics. However, each chapter begins with an introductory paragraph serving as a review so that anyone could pretty much gather what is going to be discussed.
A really nice feature of this compilation is that not only does it provide insight into the current methods, it outlines where further developments are needed and how they may help in filling in the gaps. With so many developments having been made in microarray data analysis recently, its nice to know that this book exists to help one gain a solid foundation on how to proceed with some sort of clarity. A five star rating for this one hands down. :)

I guess truth really is relative.......2005-10-11
I would have given this book a good review. The stories were interesting and raw...just like I like them. That is until I got to the part where "Lusty Lloyd" writes a story about someone I love. It was unkind, ignorant, and just plain false. Had the names of these people been used, he could have been very easily sued for slander. I grew up in Ash Valley...I know these people. The title states that these are "His True Life Stories." 207 true stories? I think not. In fact, a great deal of these stories are embellishments. I bought this book as a Christmas present, but could not give it to anyone because it would have hurt them. Had it been true, I'd let it go. But I know it's not. I was very disappointed. But if you don't care about that, then you'll probably love this book.
Where's Huck and Tom?.......2003-02-20
LLoyd and Ellen, you have outdone yourself. The stories are funny , to the point, and written in down to earth fashion such as Mark Twain. The book may not be politically correct, but you will read it with a smile on your face and and a chuckle in your heart. It brings back many familiar adventures when I was a kid growing up in the back woods of Oregon. The Pen and Ink renderings of Ellen Keeland to illustrate the stories is impecable. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.
He knows his stuff!.......2003-02-10
Lloyd Keeland is an American Icon. He has been there done that. As a former Marine in WWII I can attest to his heroics in surviving Iwo Jima. He was one of the few that survived the entire campaign somewhat intact. His yarns about the logging industry brought back some great memories for me. Again, he knows his stuff. Some of the episodes at Loon Lake were indeed hilarious, they were also very believable. Some of those goofy happenings I have been through so I can vouch for their authenticity. Anyone who knows the Northwest or has an interest in our history should enjoy Lusty Lloyd, he is a classic.

A MUST read for everyone. Anyone that would like to see what life was like for the people who built this country will enjoy this book. It does not matter which side of the fence you are on you will enjoy it and if you are like alot of people today and don't do much but sit on the fence you will enjoy it too. A book about people this country should be taking better care of now ie better healthcare and prescription drugs for our older Americans

I loved her book. I laughed with her, cried with her, and connected with her on so many levels. It is not a book only about cancer survivorship, it is a book about the human spirit and how we choose to move through our pain/suffering. I thank her for sharing her beautiful spirit with us. I gave the book to a friend who is recovering from uterine cancer and she found the book to be inspirational. This book gives hope to others.

My wife gave me this book, and I approached the read with a lot of skepticism. Now I know why she gave it to me. It's a wonderful book, honest and direct, with a sense of humor; difficult to acheive with this subject.
My family has a moderate history of cancer, but one of the people was my father. Fear has caused me to avoid consciously thinking about it my whole life. This book gave me another way to approach the subject: with honesty and humor. I have not personally experienced cancer in my body, and hope I never do. However, the author, by approaching her story with incredible honesty and fearlessness as a writer, makes it possible to believe that I could deal with the fears and challenges if I must.
I would recommend this book to anyone who has reached their 40's (as I have). I think we all begin to consider mortality at this age; we might as well approach it with honesty, no fear, and a sense of humor.

BONE MARROW BOOGIE is a book for all who have had cancer touch their lives in one way or another. Ms. Starr's prose (at times, "poetry" is a better description) leaves one thinking deeply about the ramifications of hearing that cancer has entered your life. Families, friends, and caregivers for those hearing this diagnosis will benefit greatly from this book. Certainly, those who face treatment will relate far more and find this book to be a tremendous support for the experience.
Ms. Starr's honesty, sense of humor, and excellent writing makes this a wonderful book to give as a gift.....particularly when it is difficult to know what else to do!
The artist as a middle-aged woman confronting cancer.......2002-12-31
In her inspiring and beautifully written book, Janie Starr takes us along on the journey that began when she found out she had lymphoma. Not only does she do battle with this very grave form of cancer, she also learns how to boogie, or rather, to boogie even better. This memoir gives some attention to the multiple and excruciating therapies that currently constitute cancer treatment, but much more attention is given to her search for self-knowledge through a variety of alternative strategies that can be as essential as radiation and chemotherapy for restoring health. She exposes a medical profession where some practice compassion, but many more project omnipotence and omniscience for lack of the words or feelings to deal with potentially terminal illness. Relations with those from her various communities (her parents, her family, her neighbors, her exercise and activist groups) are essential to her story. Her finely turned vignettes reveal the different ways men and women deal with cancer, as well as the variety of responses one can expect from friends, acquaintances and children. When the medical treatments end, the self-exploration continues. Ms. Starr writes eloquently about the relief of having survived, living with the fear of recurrence, and the continual questioning that facing cancer inevitably brings. Finally, this book is perhaps above all about becoming a writer, a sort of portrait of the artist as a middle-aged woman confronting cancer. This should raise a question for everyone who reads this book: Why wait for illness before learning to live life fully? Janie Starr clearly emerged from her illness as a dancer and an artist.

Much more than a cancer memoir, this book will appeal to anyone who has had to overcome adversity of any kind. Janie Starr shows a determination to live life fully no matter what the circumstances. From the cult of the zapped ones - those undergoing radiology treatments - to the dolphin tube - the CAT scan machine - Janie's unique humor and perspective are wonderfully poignant. Janie is obviously a woman of great strength and character whose journey you will find compelling. Musings about the meaning of hair, wistful identification with a Madrona tree who she considers a longtime friend, and her extraordinary capacity to transform her connections with people into meaningful encounters all make for a great read. My book goup is reading it now and I look forward to savoring it with other women at our next meeting. Ultimately, Janie's message is one of hope and a tenacious joe de vivre which you will find infectious.
