Book Description
This volume is composed of topical review articles written by leading authorities in the field. As in previous volumes in the series, each article presents an extensive description in graphical as well as in tabular form, placing emphasis on the discussion of the experimental material in the framework of physics, chemistry and material science.
Chapter one focuses on GMR in magnetic multilayers, spin valves, multilayers on grooved substrates and multilayered nanowires. Furthermore it comprises theoretical models and employs the experimental data to discuss the current understanding of GMR and the underlying physics.
A key aspect of the study of the properties of thin magnetic films and multilayers is the relationship between the structural and magnetic properties of the material, which has become one of the most active areas of research in magnetism in recent years. NMR is a well-known technique that offers the possibility to obtain experimental information on atomic scale properties in systems with reduced dimensionality. Chapter two reviews the results obtained by NMR on the latter systems. Written in tutorial style it will be helpful to scientists familiar with the preparation and properties of thin magnetic films but having little knowledge of the NMR of ferromagnetic materials.
Chapter three examines rare-earth compounds with 3d transition metals, in particular those that exhibit a magnetic instability of the 3d-subsystem. It focuses on such compounds in which the d-electron subsystem is neither non-magnetic, nor carries a stable magnetic moment.
The last chapter is concerned with the promising technology of magnetic refrigeration which can be used in a broad range of applications. It is based on the magnetocaloric effect associated with the entropy change occurring when a magnetic material is isothermally subjected to a changing magnetic field and the temperature change when the field is changed adiabatically. The last decade has witnessed quite a strong development in magnetic cooling technology and research activities in this field have been extended to a variety of magnetocaloric materials, including amorphous alloys, nanocomposites, intermetallic compounds and perovskite type oxides. The many materials, their magnetocaloric efficiency as well as the physical principles behind it are reviewed in this final chapter.

This is a terrific book. For it is a clearly conceptualized, organized, and written introduction to NVivo qualitative data analysis software by a researcher (rather than, for example, by a writer of computer manuals) that is not only a helpful and practical guide to the software but also a guide to the kinds of issues that arise in qualitative research. He also discusses how the software can be used from the perspective of several different research traditions. And he provides sample data, from an actual research project and downloadable from the Web, that are the basis of his explanations. Yet I and some co-researchers found that we could use the book just as well with our own data directly. Highly recommended for anyone intending to use NVivo for a research project.

This book provides an excellent overview of various methods in DNA microarray analysis. It explains most of the theories behind the algorithms, so that you know why the analyses are done in certain way. In fact, I find I get more insights from the book as compare to the research papers which tend to be brief.

This book is great for people who want to use Excel to analyze data using the statistical package and functions that Excel has to offer. The book reviews how to manuever in Excel and starts from the basics of statistics and proceeds to more advanced statistics such as hypothesis testing and regression. The book has great examples, and plenty of pictures and visual aides so that the reader does not have to guess as to what to do. The book does come with software so one can practice and have hands on experience.
The authors explain statistics in a plain and simple way and do not try to lose the reader with long and complex words. They are straight and to the point keeping it simple so that the reader and student learns and can go through the book and the course with more ease. If you want to use do statistics with Excel, this book is a great start.

Amazing heroism, a personal viewpoint.......2006-08-02
Personal narratives of World War 2 are pretty common, but this one was more personal to me since I knew the guy. Bob Edlin ran Edlin's Auction House here in Corpus Christi. A small kindly old man who probably didn't weigh 120 pounds soaking wet, you would never dream he captured 800 Germans single handedly. I never knew anything about him until I looked at the certificates on one wall of the auction house. A purple heart on June 6 1944! He was at D-day? I always wanted to ask him his story, but didn't want to pry. He didn't brag about his exploits, didn't even mention them. I wish I would've talked to him some more, he passed away a few years ago. But at any rate he, with the help of Marcia Moen and Margo Heinen, put his story down in paper, and it makes for fine reading. There were millions of Bob Edlins in the war, and we can never thank them enough. Pass the history on to the future generations, we owe it to them.

The Fool Lieutenant is one of several WWII 1st person accounts of veteran's memories of combat in Europe and the Italian campaigns. These stories need to be told and read to let younger generations know what their fathers did to make the world safer for them today. My father never talked about the war to me except in generalities I know most were the same way around their children.
Rangers Lead the Way.......2004-08-26
I happened on to this book by chance and am glad I did. I served with the 2nd Ranger Bn in the 80's and consider myself pretty good on Ranger History but, I had never heard of "The Fool Lieutenant". Bob Edlin is truely an American hero and anyone who is interested in WWII or the Rangers should definitely read this story. Mr. Edlin captures the essence of the dedication, the selflessness and the comaraderie that is embodied in the American Ranger both past and present.

At the same time that he has told us a facinating story about Dr. Beeson's life, he has explained some of the history of medicine during the 20th century. I was a resident training under Dr.Beeson during his tenure as Chairman of Medicine at Yale. Many of those quoted in the text are old friends and colleagues. The qualities they describe, I can assure any reader, are not exaggerated. This is a compelling and readable account of a great man. Rapport has come close to identifying his essence. This is must reading for anyone trying to understand what makes a supremely good physician in a society undergoing profound social and complex technologic changes.
