Endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) and pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) have been globally detected in impacted natural waters. The detection of trace quantities of EDCs and PPCPs in the environment is of great concern since some of these compounds have known physiological responses at low concentrations. EDCs can have a wide range of polarities, acidic and basic moieties, and exist in trace quantities, which often requires numerous complex extractions, large sample collection volumes, and multiple instrumental analyses. A comprehensive method has been developed allowing for the analysis of 58 potential EDCs in various water matrices using a single solid-phase extraction (SPE) of a 1L sample with subsequent analyses using both gas chromatography and liquid chromatography, each coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS and LC-MS/MS). Instrument detection limits ranged between 0.12-7.5pg with corresponding method reporting limits of 1-10ngl^-^1 in water. Recoveries for most compounds were between 50% and 112% with good reproducibility (RSD 6-22%).

Conversion of nitrate into a nitro-phenol derivative by reaction with 2-methylphenol or 2,6-dimethylphenol allowed at least 100-fold enrichment of the derivative on Lichrolut EN polymeric cartridge, and it is stable for up to 1 month on the cartridge. The derivative could be eluted with ammonia-methanol mixture. This reaction for nitrate determination has permitted a choice of final measurement by UV-Vis spectrophotometry, liquid chromatography or gas chromatography-mass spectrometry when the limits of detection were 10, 6 and 3@mgl^-^1, respectively, and the calibration range 20@mg to 10mgl^-^1 nitrate. The method has been validated by spiking natural water samples, when the recovery of nitrate was 98.5-108.4% (relative standard deviation 2.5-6.1%).

A new method for the analysis of mono- and disaccharides by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) has been developed. The analysis uses per-O-methylation of analytes and dynamic micro-solid phase extraction with helical sorbent as sample preparation steps. The two-phase (solid-liquid) extraction rate of per-O-methylated carbohydrates was not affected by the stirring rate of the sample solution. The rate-limiting process was the diffusion of per-O-methylated carbohydrates in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) sorbent. The amount of per-O-methylated carbohydrates extracted was significantly increased by the addition of a few drops of a solvent such as dimethyl sulfoxide, benzene, or chloroform. A new three-phase (solid-liquid-liquid) extraction technique, which increased the efficiency of extraction by more than 50 times, was developed. The micro-solid phase extraction with a helical sorbent was examined for its applicability to the analysis of mono- and disaccharides from a synthetic mixture and from orange juice. The reproducibility was found to be approximately 2% when the extraction and injection were performed with a special helical sorbent holder device. The linearity was found to be very good up to 0.3mg/mL. The limit of detection (LOD) was up to nanograms per milliliter, depending on the organic solvent present in solution.

For the first time, organotins have been assessed in samples collected from Bizerte lagoon, in Tunisia, during two seasons (summer and winter). The organotin distribution was studied in marine sediments and mussels tissues of this lagoon. Butyl-, phenyl- and octyltins were determined using a rapid speciation analytical method based on one-step ethylation/extraction with sodium tetraethylborate in aqueous phase. Simultaneously to the ethylation, the extraction was performed by either liquid/liquid extraction (LLE) or head-space solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME). Gas chromatography with pulsed flame photometric detection (GC-PFPD) was used to perform quantitative determination. The technique has been validated using biological and sediment reference materials. The different samples from Bizerte lagoon were found to be moderately contaminated, especially by butyltins. This pollution was attributed to industrial activities, which are very important in this area. Organotins appeared accumulated in both sediments and mussels, while significant degradations of triorganotins to monosubstituted ones was observed in water.

A Good Read........2007-04-29
My criteria for any book is simple. The writing must be excellent. The story must be plausible. And the subject has to be absorbing. This book satisfies my requirements and gets 5 stars.
I was in the military and served in Vietnam. The information in this book is consistent with my experiences and the experiences depicted in similar books about Vietnam. I cant argue if Roberts wuz or wuznt in the Walking Dead Battalion. I dont know. I do know that me and my friends from Vietnam argue about events we experienced together. I served several weeks with one outfit in Vietnam, but was never formally assigned to that unit. Consequently, I dont get invited to their reunions. I spent exactly two weeks in still another outfit, was formally assigned to it, and can tell you almost nothing about it. Some of my friends had similar experiences. They were volunteered for temporary duty elsewhere, and there is no formal record of it. So the issue of "assignment" is irrelevant to me.
A Marine's story about Vietnam........2006-02-20
I liked this story about Vietnam. The author spent some time in Vietnam during the early phase of the war (1965-66). What struck me was the comradely focus of his experience. He depended upon his buddies. The Vietnam population was pro-Communist in his sector. Sasser was enraged when the civilian population watched the progress of Marines through their villages and waited for the booby traps to spring. It is no wonder that certain soldiers held grudges against the population when the time came. He was in one village where Cronkite was broadcasting as Marines fired the town. What one didn't see in this village was the weapons cache found in the tunnels and bunkers under the town.
This is one man's experience of the war in its early phases. I liked this very much even though some of the stories are not for some people. This is an interesting read.

This book, although interesting reading, is replete with historical inaccuracies. The writers, both Tulsa Police Officers, "borrowed" a title belonging to another unit - that of the FIRST BATTALION, NINTH MARINES. Roberts writes of his service with the Second Battalion and Third Battalion, and even talks of those unit's nicknames, "Hell in a Helmet" (2/9) and "Shadow Warriors" (3/9). There are very few Vietnam Marines living who do not know that "The Walking Dead" was indeed 1/9.
The books title gives a false impression that he served in one of the most famous infantry battalions in the Marine Corps. His book is fiction and self-flattering.
Roberts & Sasser's accounting of the Morley Safer incident at Cam Ne don't match up with the actual incident either. Although 2/9 did operate in that area, it was Delta Company of 1/9 (not 2/9 as Roberts states) that entered the village on the day described in his book. I would know because I was there at the time.
When reserching Roberts claims of being a Marine Sniper I found a website with a photo of his "donated" uniform to an alma mater of his. The uniform had a Rifle "Sharpshooter" marksmanship badge on it along with Vietnam Service Ribbons. I never heard of a "Sharpshooter", or anyone less than a qualified Marine Rifle "Expert" qualifyer ever being selected to be a Marine Sniper either.
I don't recommend this book to ANYONE interested in an accurate war novel. This book is not about the famed "Walking Dead" as it's title implies. I am throwing away my copy.
The Walking Dead.......2005-10-22
Mr. Roberts attempts to capture the essence of the Vietnam combat experience for the noncombatant reader, which can't be done. One has to live it to really understand it. Simply ask any Vietnam Vet and they will tell you...Only those who've "been there" can understand. I find it extrememly difficult to believe that Mr. Roberts lead a recon team, served as a sniper, advised a CAC team of ARVN Rangers, and was shot down and rescued... all in one tour, and as only a PFC. I would rate the book as a work based on limited historical fact, mixed with large doses of personal fictional embellishments designed to entice the reader to purchase more of the author's works. By the way, it was 1/9 who were "The Walking Dead".

This book is fiction and probably, as Pittaway says, "Entertaining". It is not historically accurate and should be listed with other works of fiction.
Five people reviewed the book ahead of me: Pittaway is a professional reviewer and found the book entertaining but could not be expected to know anything about the subject. He is unqualified to argue the historical accuracy of it.
Bill Weidenbacher titled his review "Too much hype" and expressed serious doubts as to the accuracy of it. Bill was there. He would know.
"Reader" is unwilling to stand behind his/her opinions so cannot be taken seriously.
David Anderson labeled his review "The Walking Dead: Misrepresented". Anderson got it right. The book may be a good read as fiction but should be labeled as such.
"Reader" again posting something he/she is unwilling to take credit for. Disregard it.
Five reviews - one (Pittaway) from a reviewer who, admittedly, knows nothing of the facts surrounding the controversy:
Two (Reader & Reader) which seem to be someone from the publisher's office writing unsubstantiated hype to boost sales.
Two from men of Honor and Integrity who know what they are talking about - they both label it as interesting fiction. I add my voice to theirs.

The seller sent me one book with first 2 stories in it. It was supposed to be four books. I accept that change without being asked. But the seller never sent the second book. I have emailed several times without any response at all. I will never buy from this seller again.
All Emotions Great and Small.......2000-02-22
Since I want to become a vet, I thought that this would be a great book to read. From the first sentence to the last I was enthralled. The words James Herriot uses in his books make you feel like you are standing right beside him when he is talking. This book will make you literally laugh out loud and also will make you cry. The story in this book is not one easily forgotten.

A book I remember years later..........1999-12-07
I had a dear aunt give me a copy of "All Things Great and Small" as a kid. I began to read it out of boredom as it was summer and school was out. I remember how each chapter was it's own story--some sad and some quite humorous and in my mind James Herriot allowed me a accompany him on each vetinarian visit. Trully a wonderful book series. Now as a parent I can see how this book might make for a great bed-time story book for children.
Great account of the life of an English country Vet!.......1999-11-17
I've read the whole series several times over, and it really brings to life images of English country farms. Cold frosty mornings, gruff country farmers, the rolling hills and dales of the countryside are all beautifully illustrated through Jame's Harriot's wonderful prose. It evokes thoughts of simpler times and whisks you away from the hustle and bustle of modern city life. A bonus if you love animals, but not necessary to enjoy these books!

An Excellent Book.......2006-02-22
I received this book as a gift for graduating college with a degree in veterinary technology. It was fascinating to learn about the ways of a country vet so long ago. Some of the things the author writes about, I wouldn't have known without being familiar with veterinary terms, but it's definitely a book anyone could enjoy.
It's helpful that the chapters are their own little stories, because sometimes I don't get a chance to read for weeks at a time, and would've forgotten the details of the plot by then. But starting a new chapter is like starting a new mini-story with the same characters.
I would recommend this book to anyone wanting a good read.
Very visual - - A ton of fun.......2002-11-12
Mr. Herriot's journey through life as a veterinary surgeon is a heart-warming tale. As he goes about day to day, he meets some difficult tasks and is challenged by them. He pulls through almost all of them with extreme care towards the animals that are loved by many. He shows compassion while going about the work that many would get sick to their stomach just thinking about it. An awesome story.

I have been reading excerpts of 'All Creatures Great and Small' in publications such as 'Reader's Digest' for years and have always enjoyed them. When I came across a hardcover copy of the two combined books on the sale table at the local mall, I bought it. Let me tell you, the excerpts didn't do it justice. James Herriot is a superb writer, combining humor, insights, sadness...the list can go on and on. He writes as if he's sitting right next to you talking directly to you. I caught myself tearing up in some places and belly-laughing in others. I had such a good time reading it that I now own all of his books (except for the children's books).

This is a feel-good book - the sort of book that gives you that warm-and-fuzzy-feeling' - the sort of book that convinces you that there is still hope for this sad-world-of-ours. I make it a point to read this book at least once a year.
James Herriot is successful not because of the beauty of his sentences or the brilliance of his plot, but for the warmth he radiates. He handles the humourous and the poignant with equal ease, and sometimes you wonder why he ever became a vet when he had such a wonderful gift with words. Perhaps it was just as well.
All Creatures Great and Small is, along with 'Every Living Thing' my favourite of his books. He manages to achieve a perfece balance between simplicity and originality - something so many writers fail to do. If I ever visit England, I know I have just _got_ to see the Yorkshire Dales, if for no other reason than that this was where James Herriot lived and worked.
Books for a lifetime.......2001-12-09
I first read James Herriott's series about 25 years ago, and I've re-read them numerous times since. The paperbacks in my original boxed gift set are falling apart, with missing pages and loose bindings. Now I'm buying them in hardcover to make sure that I have them available to read again and again for the rest of my life and to pass on to my children and grandchildren.
