    Book Description

A common feature of advanced functional materials - such as thin films, layered structures and all kinds of nanoscale materials (ultrafine powders, polycrystals, nanocomposites, nanoporous or nanotubular materials) - is that their properties are mainly influenced by the structure and composition of their surfaces and interfaces.
This book discusses the processing, fabrication, structure, properties and applications of such interface-controlled materials, highlighting the problem of determining the structure and properties of these advanced materials by different techniques.

      Book Description

This book provides a unified framework that describes how genetic learning can be used to design pattern recognition and learning systems. The book is unique in the sense of describing how a search technique, the genetic algorithm, can be used for pattern classification mainly through approximating decision boundaries, and it demonstrates the effectiveness of the genetic classifiers vis-à-vis several widely used classifiers, including neural networks. It provides a balanced mixture of theories, algorithms and applications, and in particular results from the bioinformatics and Web intelligence domains.

This book will be useful to graduate students and researchers in computer science, electrical engineering, systems science, and information technology, both as a text and reference book. Researchers and practitioners in industry working in system design, control, pattern recognition, data mining, soft computing, bioinformatics and Web intelligence will also benefit.

          Book Description

Evolutionary computation is becoming increasingly important for computer vision and pattern recognition and provides a systematic way of synthesis and analysis of object detection and recognition systems. Incorporating "learning" into recognition systems will enable these systems to automatically generate new features on the fly and cleverly select a good subset of features according to the type of objects and images to which they are applied. This unique monograph investigates evolutionary computational techniques---such as genetic programming, linear genetic programming, coevolutionary genetic programming and genetic algorithms---to automate the synthesis and analysis of object detection and recognition systems. The book achieves four aims: *Shows the efficacy of genetic programming and coevolutionary genetic programming in synthesizing effective composite operators and composite features from domain-independent primitive image processing operations and primitive features (both elementary and complex) for object detection and recognition. *Integrates smart crossover, smart mutation and a new fitness function based on minimum description length (MDL) principle in a design to improve genetic programming's efficiency *Proposes a new MDL-based fitness function to improve the genetic algorithm’s performance on feature selection for object detection and recognition. *Synthesizes recognition systems by using adaptive coevolutionary linear genetic programming (LGP) in conjunction with general computer vision and image processing operators The purpose of incorporating learning into the system design is to avoid the time-consuming process of feature generation and selection and to reduce the cost of building object detection and recognition systems. Researchers, professionals, engineers, and students working in computer vision, pattern recognition, target recognition, machine learning, evolutionary learning, image processing, knowledge discovery and data mining, cybernetics, robotics, automation and psychology will find this well-developed and organized volume an invaluable resource.

            Book Description

Solving pattern recognition problems involves an enormous amount of computational effort. By applying genetic algorithms - a computational method based on the way chromosomes in DNA recombine - these problems are more efficiently and more accurately solved. Genetic Algorithms for Pattern Recognition covers a broad range of applications in science and technology, describing the integration of genetic algorithms in pattern recognition and machine learning problems to build intelligent recognition systems. The articles, written by leading experts from around the world, accomplish several objectives: they provide insight into the theory of genetic algorithms; they develop pattern recognition theory in light of genetic algorithms; and they illustrate applications in artificial neural networks and fuzzy logic. The cross-sectional view of current research presented in Genetic Algorithms for Pattern Recognition makes it a unique text, ideal for graduate students and researchers.

                      Book Description

This book addresses the range image registration problem for automatic 3D model construction. The focus is on obtaining highly precise alignments between different view pairs of the same object to avoid 3D model distortions; in contrast to most prior work, the view pairs may exhibit relatively little overlap and need not be prealigned. To this end, a novel effective evaluation metric for registration, the Surface Interpenetration Measure (SIM) is defined. This measure quantifies the interleaving of two surfaces as their alignment is refined, putting the qualitative evaluation of "splotchiness," often used in reference to renderings of the aligned surfaces, onto a solid mathematical footing. The SIM is shown to be superior to mean squared error (i.e. more sensitive to fine scale changes) in controlling the final stages of the alignment process. The authors go on to combine the SIM with Genetic Algorithms (GAs) to develop a robust approach for range image registration. The results confirm that this technique achieves precise surface registration with no need for prealignment, as opposed to methods based on the Iterative Closest Point (ICP) algorithm, the most popular to date. Thorough experimental results including an extensive comparative study are presented and enhanced GA-based approaches to improve the registration still further are proposed. The authors also develop a global multiview registration technique using the GA-based approach. The results show considerable promise in terms of accuracy for 3D modeling.

                        Description:
Differential mobility spectra for alkanes, alcohols, ketones, cycloalkanes, substituted ketones, and substituted benzenes with carbon numbers between 3 and 10 were obtained from gas chromatography-differential mobility spectrometry (GC-DMS) analyses of mixtures in dilute solution. Spectra were produced in a supporting atmosphere of purified air with 0.6-0.8ppm moisture, gas temperature of 120^oC, sample concentrations of ~0.2-5ppm, and ion source of 5mCi (185MBq) ^6^3Ni. Multiple spectra were extracted from chromatographic elution profiles for each chemical providing a library of 390 spectra from 39 chemicals. The spectra were analyzed for structural content by chemical family using two different approaches. In the one approach, the wavelet packet transform was used to denoise and deconvolute the DMS data by decomposing each spectrum into its wavelet coefficients, which represent the sample's constituent frequencies. The wavelet coefficients characteristic of the compound's structural class were identified using a genetic algorithm (GA) for pattern recognition analysis. The pattern recognition GA uses both supervised and unsupervised learning to identify coefficients which optimize clustering of the spectra in a plot of the two or three largest principal components of the data. Because principal components maximize variance, the bulk of the information encoded by the selected coefficients is about differences between chemical families in the data set. The principal component analysis routine embedded in the fitness function of the pattern recognition GA acts as an information filter, significantly reducing the size of the search space since it restricts the search to coefficients whose principal component plots show clustering on the basis of chemical family. In a second approach, a back propagation neural network was trained to categorize spectra by chemical families and the network was successfully tested using familiar and unfamiliar chemicals. Performance of the network was associated with a region of the spectrum associated with fragment ions which could be extracted from spectra and were class specific.

4 out of 5 stars Pappy Gunn Review.......2007-06-13

After having read numerous books on the 5th Air Force operations in the Southwest Pacific (SWP) theatre during WWII, that made constant reference to Pappy Gunn and his contribution to the success of the operations, it was great to finally obtain an in depth look at the man. The book provides a wealth of information on the ability of Pappy Gunn to get what was needed to accomplish his goals of not only modifying B-25s and A-20s into strafers and capable of longer range, but to show that his dedication to his captive family was his motivation. This is not just a war story, but an in depth story of a very significant character in the overall picture of the war in the SWP.

The shortfall in this book is the poor reproduction of the photos and the letters. The letters were especially hard to read and as a result, significant information that could have added depth to the story was lost.

5 out of 5 stars Would have made a great John Wayne Movie.......2007-01-19

This book is a great read, and would have made great fiction, but it is based on real life. Pappy Gunn's life was incredible and how he dealt with adversity should be a model for current Americans. America is what it is because it creates people like Pappy Gunn, who rise to crises and overcome overwhelming odds to persevere, through hard work, innovation, skill and risk-taking. I couldn't put this book down once I started reading it. What was accomplished with severely limited resources, and the American can do attitude in the Southwest Pacific by Pappy Gunn and his contemporaries was incredible, and was skillfully expressed in this book. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars This is as exciting an historical account as you will ever read!.......2006-08-13

This is a singularly unique book that tells a true life, historical account of one of the greatest heros of "The Great War." With stunning photographs, and with every fact offered supported by actual photocopies of historical documents proving each assertion, and written with skill and heart as only his son Nathaniel Gunn could, this is a "must read" for anyone interested in the "Greatest Generation," in WWII lore, etc. In our current existential angst about what constitutes a righteous and reasonable occasion for war, this is a book that will make the most liberal anti-war wonk thank his/her lucky stars that in a time long past there were those who had the courage to stand up and fight for all that we have come to hold so dear. You won't be able to put this book down, I promise you! So put on a pot of coffee, curl up in your most comfortable easy chair, and be prepared to bear witness to one of the most incredible true stories of courage, love, and patriotism that you will ever read.

5 out of 5 stars World War II's Greatest Hero.......2004-07-23

If there is a single outstanding American hero of World War II (and perhaps in all of American history) it is Colonel Paul Irvin "Pappy" Gunn.A former US enlisted naval aviator, Gunn had retired from the Navy and was living in the Philippines with his wife and four children when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and invaded the Philippines. As the owner of a small air taxi operation, Gunn and his airplanes were impressed into the United States Army Air Corps immediately after the outbreak of war. On Christmas Eve, 1941 Gunn was ordered to fly a load of Far East Air Force staff officers to Australia and to stay there awaiting further orders. His family - including the author - remained in Manila and were interned by the Japanese for the duration, leading Gunn to fight his own private war. And fight he did! Historian and author Walter Edmond stated that no other single invidual did as much to defeat the Japanese as did Gunn, who is best known for his conversion of the Douglas A-20 and North American B-25 into powerful gunships that did a number on a Japanese convoy in the Battle of the Bismarck Sea. But he did a lot more, especially in those dark days of early 1942. It's not widely known, but Gunn flew several missions from Australia to Bataan by way of Mindanao in his role as the commander of the newly organized Air Transport Command. During the Java Campaign he took a war-weary B-17 that had been turned over to his transport squadron and used it to attack Japanese ships in the Java Sea. In March 1942 he literally stole two dozen B-25s from the Netherlands East Indies Air Force, then flew one of ten on the Royce Raid into the Philippines a few weeks later.

Pappy Gunn is the the famous aviators story in the words of his son Nat, who grew up in the Japanese internment camp at Santo Thomas Prison, then lived with his dad in the Philippines after the war and until his untimely death in 1957. Nat has done an outstanding job of telling not only his father's story, but also that of his mother, brother and two sisters as they waited helplessly in the Philippines for their father and husband to return for them. Instead of their father, it was no less a figure than General Douglas McAthur who came to the gates of Santo Thomas University to put them on a C-47 for the flight to Australia, where Pappy Gunn had been evacuated a few months before after recieving a serious wound from a Japanese white phosphorus bomb. This book should be read by every American! It's the story of a real hero, not a media or politically generated one.

Everyone has heard of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, ADHD, but most do not know very much about what it is really like to suffer from the debilitating, destructive condition. Conflictive reports in the media and even from healthcare practitioners leave parents of ADHD children and ADHD individuals confused, afraid and unsure of what to do. In this unique book, Dr. Kuendig takes the reader on a journey through the life of an individual with ADHD, himself, and shares his understanding the peaks and valleys of the discorder both from the viewpoint of a clinical psychologist and an afflicted person. Before parents and caregivers assume that living with ADHD is not really all that difficult, they should make reading this book their number one priority!

5 out of 5 stars Understands the experience.......2005-02-15

I must heartedly disagree with MJPoston, Dr. Kuendig's book is FAR superior to "The Little Monster." Although both are autobiographical, ADHD: An Autobiography of Survival, is about the experience of ADHD and not just a bunch of stories about living with ADHD as is The Little monster. Regarding her statement that there are no treatment recommendations, MJPoston obviously did not read the book, because if he/she had it would have been woefully obvious that the entire book is about treatment. No, the treatment talked about in this book is not entirely clinical, but it is not meant to be. ADHD: An Autobiography of Survival is a wonderful book of experience...experience on a deep level, felt from within the heart of a person suffering from ADHD. Besides the fact that The Little Monster is almost double the price and delivers half the insight as ADHD: An Autobiography of Survival one must bear in mind that the purpose of Dr. Kuendig's book as stated in the intro, is to help those who live with ADHD undertand the INNER experience of ADHD and learn to modify THEIR behavior as much as if not MORE than the ADHD sufferer.
PLease read this book first and save yourself some money and time, this book is clearly the best book, in my opinion, about the life of an individual with ADHD! I love this book and will continue to buy copies for my sons teachers every year!!!

5 out of 5 stars Bravo! back again!.......2005-02-15

It's been almost a yr to the day since I first read Dr. Kuendig's touching autobiography. After the second semester of this school year I found myself dusting off my copy (gives me a sense of comfort to read this book) and becoming my sons advocate at parent/teacher conferences. Once again I purchased multiple copies and distributed them thru the high school in hopes of "opening their eyes". After reading another review I decided to also purchase Little Monster....unfortunately it wasn't what I had hoped for- AT ALL! Again, Dr.Kuendigs book is a MUST READ FOR ANYONE, odds are that ADHD/ADD affects someone in your life...it will open your eyes and your heart!

A must read for any parent or spouse of an ADHD person!! Not only was this informative & truly helpful, but it was incredibly touching! Dr. Kuendig took a personal approach adding in the trials and tribulations that so many of us (and our children) face. I found myself both, crying & laughing thru the entire book! I gave copies to my son & the school guidance counselor.

                              4 out of 5 stars A real look . . ........2004-01-25

Dr Kuendig's book is just what it states in the title - the story of his lifetime struggles with ADHD. His perspective is very personal and reflective as well as professional sound, as he is now a psychologist treating patients with ADHD.

It's a wonderful story of one man's journey that you can use to get a perspective on living with ADHD. One warning: I was inclined to give it to my son to read; the story would be very comforting and encouraging to him. There are some discussions of a lifestyle of drugs and sex that may make it inappropriate for younger ages. Read it yourself first. It is well worth it.
