Handbook of Materials Modeling
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1402032870 |
Book Description
The first reference of its kind in the rapidly emerging field of computational approachs to materials research, this is a compendium of perspective-providing and topical articles written to inform students and non-specialists of the current status and capabilities of modelling and simulation. From the standpoint of methodology, the development follows a multiscale approach with emphasis on electronic-structure, atomistic, and mesoscale methods, as well as mathematical analysis and rate processes. Basic models are treated across traditional disciplines, not only in the discussion of methods but also in chapters on crystal defects, microstructure, fluids, polymers and soft matter. Written by authors who are actively participating in the current development, this collection of 150 articles has the breadth and depth to be a major contributor toward defining the field of computational materials. In addition, there are 40 commentaries by highly respected researchers, presenting various views that should interest the future generations of the community. Subject Editors: Martin Bazant, MIT; Bruce Boghosian, Tufts University; Richard Catlow, Royal Institution; Long-Qing Chen, Pennsylvania State University; William Curtin, Brown University; Tomas Diaz de la Rubia, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory; Nicolas Hadjiconstantinou, MIT; Mark F. The Hybrid Multiscale Simulation Technology
Alexander S. Lipatov Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540417346 |
Book Description
This book is a comprehensive description of hybrid plasma simulation models and will provide a very useful summary and guide to the vast literature on this topic. It addresses researchers and graduate students knowledgeable about computational science and numerical analysis, and can be used in courses on astrophysical and space plasmas. It is also meant for plasma installation designers. The coupled Vlasov--Maxwell equations with collisions describing well the physical system are far too heavy for numerical simulations. Hybrid models treat some aspects kinetically and some as fluids. In the first part the author discusses hybrid codes, which include a wide spectrum of description for ions, positrons, dust grains, atoms and electrons. In the second part he treats the applications to basic plasma phenomena like particle acceleration and dissipation processes as well as to the global interaction of the solar wind with nonmagnetic planets, comets, and the local interstellar medium.

Modeling Complex Living Systems: A Kinetic Theory and Stochastic Game Approach (Modeling and Simulation in Science, Engineering and Technology)
Nicola Bellomo Manufacturer: Birkhäuser Boston ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0817645101 |
Book Description
Using tools from mathematical kinetic theory and stochastic game theory, this work deals with the modeling of large complex systems in the applied sciences, particularly those comprised of several interacting individuals whose dynamics follow rules determined by some organized, or even "intelligent" ability. Traditionally, methods of mathematical kinetic theory have been applied to model the evolution of large systems of interacting classical or quantum particles. This book, on the other hand, examines the modeling of living systems as opposed to inert systems.
The author develops new mathematical methods and tools—hopefully a "new" mathematics—toward the modeling of living systems. Such tools need to be far more complex than those dealing with systems of inert matter. The first part of the book deals with deriving general evolution equations that can be customized to particular systems of interest in the applied sciences. The second part of the book deals with various models and applications.
The presentation unfolds using the following common approach in each chapter:
* Phenomenological interpretation of the physical system in the context of mathematical modeling
* Derivation of the mathematical model using methods from mathematical kinetic theory for active particles
* Simulations, parameter sensitivity analysis, and critical inspection of the derived model towards validation
* Overview of presented ideas to improve existing models, with special emphasis on applications
Specific topics covered include:
* Modeling of the competition between cells of an aggressive invasive agent and cells of the immune system
* Modeling of vehicular traffic flow
* Modeling of swarms and crowd dynamics in complex geometric environments
* Methodological aspects related to multiscale modeling of large systems viewed as interconnected subsystems
Modeling Complex Living Systems is a valuable resource for applied mathematicians, engineers, physicists, biologists, economists, and graduate students involved in modeling complex social systems and living matter in general.

Multiscale Modelling and Simulation (Lecture Notes in Computational Science and Engineering)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 3540211802 |
Book Description
In August 2003, ETHZ Computational Laboratory (CoLab), together with the Swiss Center for Scientific Computing in Manno and the Università della Svizzera Italiana (USI), organized the Summer School in "Multiscale Modelling and Simulation" in Lugano, Switzerland. This summer school brought together experts in different disciplines to exchange ideas on how to link methodologies on different scales. Relevant examples of practical interest include: structural analysis of materials, flow through porous media, turbulent transport in high Reynolds number flows, large-scale molecular dynamic simulations, ab-initio physics and chemistry, and a multitude of others. Though multiple scale models are not new, the topic has recently taken on a new sense of urgency. A number of hybrid approaches are now created in which ideas coming from distinct disciplines or modelling approaches are unified to produce new and computationally efficient techniques.

Multiscale Problems and Methods in Numerical Simulations: Lectures given at the C.I.M.E. Summer School held in Martina Franca, Italy, September 9-15, 2001 ... Mathematics / Fondazione C.I.M.E., Firenze)
James H. Bramble , Albert Cohen , and Wolfgang Dahmen Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 3540200991 |
Book Description
This volume aims to disseminate a number of new ideas that have emerged in the last few years in the field of numerical simulation, all bearing the common denominator of the "multiscale" or "multilevel" paradigm. This covers the presence of multiple relevant "scales" in a physical phenomenon; the detection and representation of "structures", localized in space or in frequency, in the solution of a mathematical model; the decomposition of a function into "details" that can be organized and accessed in decreasing order of importance; and the iterative solution of systems of linear algebraic equations using "multilevel" decompositions of finite dimensional spaces.
