Hydrogen peroxide is a chemical that is becoming increasingly fashionable as an oxidant, both in industry and in academia and whose production is expected to increase significantly in the next few years. During the last decade physicists, engineers and computer scientists have joined in an enormously fruitful dialogue about traffic and granular flow. Cars and sand grains have in common, that they interact irreversibly, which is the reason for similar jamming phenomena. The main difference is that car drivers choose their destination and route individually, while grains follow external driving forces. This book gives an overview about the progress in modelling, computer simulation, experiments and field observations, which was reached within the last two years. The contributions are based on the International Workshop Traffic and Granular Flow '01, which took place in Nagoya, 15 - 17 October 2001. In addition, as a new research topic in this field, collective animal behaviour is attracting increasing attention. All this was in the scope of the conference held in Vienna, September 28–30, 2005, the third one in a series after Duisburg (2001) and Greenwich (2003).

In light of recent natural disasters (New Orleans for example) and the terrorist events of 2001, this book has a certain relevance. It models how people might evacuate a given area. Which might be a building, ship, plane or train. The research papers systematically study how to design such an area for optimal evacuation. Most [all?] seem to have been originally in German.

Several papers perform mathematical modelling. Where pedestrians might be cellular automata, acting under an impulse or potential function, coupled with some randomness. The latter is essential for any realistic situation. Dynamic networks are also used to model the flow.

Ideas like directional sound are studied. Possibly lifesavers, when used as audible beacons. But much remains to be done, to optimise their design.

Everyone, who deals with these topics or safety issues in general
(not security, though) the volume provides an overview over the newest results and the state of the art. This will also be useful for the practitioner who is mainly interested in applying the results.
At the same time the reader can get thorough information about "pedestrian dynamics" and "evacuation simulation".
Furthermore, a whole part of the book is concerned with the evacuation of passenger ships.
This book is unique concerning the topics it deals with (a strong focus on simulation).
It can be strongly recommended to everyone who is engaged in this area (not only scientists).

Effective evacuation of people from closed spaces is an extremely important topic, since it can save real lives in emergency situations that can be brought about by natural and human made disasters. Usually there are static maps posted at various places at buildings that illustrate routes that should be taken during emergencies. However, when disasters happen, some of these routes might not be valid because of structural problems due to the disaster itself and more importantly because of the distribution of congestion of people spread over the area. The average flow of traffic depends on the traffic density. Therefore, if all the people follow the same route, or follow a route without knowing the congestion situation, they can end up being part of the congestion which results in very low flow rate or worse a traffic jam. Hence it becomes extremely important to design evacuations that inform people how fast and in which direction to move based on real-time information obtained about the people distribution using various sensors. The sensors used can include cameras, infra red sensors etc., and the technology used to inform people about the desired movement can be communicated using light matrix, small speakers, and in the future using wireless PDAs. This book provides mathematical models of pedestrian movements that can be used specifically for designing feedback control laws for effective evacuation. The book also provides various feedback control laws to accomplish the effective evacuation. The book uses the hydrodynamic hyperbolic PDE macroscopic pedestrian models since they are amenable to feedback control design. The control designs are obtained through different nonlinear techniques including Lyapunov functional techniques, feedback linearization in the distributed model, and some discretized techniques.

A sweet musty tropical smell hung over the city of Manila in the spring of 1941. It was a city of warm monsoon winds, cold San Miguel beer, cabarets, and slender girls with hinting eyes. It was a plum duty station for professional soldiers and sailors, and many made a career there.

In early 1941, Joseph Quitman Johnson enlisted in the U.S.Army. This memoir relates how he was thrown in with these older professional soldiers during the pre-war days of duty in Manila. It tells of his courage and bravery in the defense of Bataan, how he escaped the Death March to fight on the beaches of Corregidor, and finally his imprisonment in Japanese prisoner of war camps. It tells of forced labor, cruelty, disease, of surviving the sinkings of hell ships en route to Japan, and of working in condemned coal mines. It tells of the coming of age of a boy who joined the Army when he was only 14 years old.

This story recounts actual incidents and events that occurred in his life. Many events were tragic, some heartless and inhumane. This is the story of two cultures at odds with the other, each at times unbending.

Joseph Quitman Johnson lived this story and each of these events. He began this saga in 1941 at the tender age of 14 when he joined the Army. For whatever reason, fate chose him as one of those who was to survive these many ordeals. He was finally to taste freedom at the age of 19 when the war ended.

This is a true story, his memoir. This is the story of an underage American soldier who grew up on the battlefields of Bataan and Corregidor and the Japanese prisoner of war slave labor camps in the Philippines and Japan. His hometown newspaper named him the "Baby of Bataan."

A Compelling Story.......2006-11-18

Once in a while, a book like this comes along. Do not miss this one. I tried to remember back when I was fourteen and what I was doing. wow! This is a story of a fourteen year old that put himself into the adult world of the military. It tells of his problems as a new recruit, his first taste of war, a chilling account of him as a POW, and even a story of the love of a young girl. This book has everything. I just wish I had the opportunity to shake Joseph Quitman Johnson's hand. Any teenager facing obstacles in his life should be given this book as a gift. I truly believe it could change their lives. Actually, it might have changed mine. My grandchildren will have a copy when they are old enough to understand.

I've read probably 15-20 books on the subject of POWs held by the Japanese - many of them written by the men themselves - this is one of the best - it's well written, considering it's done by a "non-professional" (some are barely readable) - "Baby of Bataan" is hard to put down as you travel with young Joe Johnson as he acts just the way a 15 year old would - thinks he knows it all and doesn't want to follow directions - thinks he all grown up when he runs away and lies to join the army - it doesn't take long for him to regret his decision but he stands up and acts like a man, does his job with the army as the U.S. tries to defend the Philippines then sees his best friends die and learns to survive as a POW - this is a book that every 16 year old in America should read - to learn why they have the privilege of living in this country as a free citizen -

Baby Of Bataan: Memoir Of A 14 Year Old Soldier In World War II the true story of a young man who, having grown up in the Depression with a broken family, lied to an Army recruiter to enlist at age 14. At age 16 he became a prisoner of war of the Japanese, forced to endure horrific conditions and nearly killed by his captors. Baby Of Bataan is a tale of survival, of being witness to death by overwork, slow starvation, maltreatment and worse, but also of the strong side of the spirit capable of weathering years of adversity while remaining fully human. Very highly recommended reading.

I have read the book "Baby of Bataan" and would recommend it highly. Being a Viet Nam veteran I have a natural interest in this type of genre. The "Baby of Bataan" is an exceptional work. Mr Johnson first lets you get to know him, and his life, as a youngster before taking you on the "journey of a life time". He spares you graphic details of the horror of war and yet you get a full understanding of what he endured.

The veterans of WWII saved to world. This work is a demonstration of the unselfish bravery these individuals had to be a part of world history. Buy this book to honor Mr. Johnson's sacrifice, read this book to understand the dynamics of war, pass this book on to younger family members to read, so we as a nation, we don't forget our true heros, and take a WWII veteran to lunch to say thank you!

"Baby of Bataan" is a captivating book about a young man who joined the army at age 14, became a POW at age 16, and spent almost 4 years in a number of Japanese prison camps. This book is a must read for anyone who has ever felt like giving up, or anyone who feels that growing up is just too hard sometimes. It has something for everyone, and that makes it easy to empathize with Joseph Quitman Johnson. You will be emotionally charged by this book as Joe and his fellow prisoners are subjected to the indignities, inhumane treatment, and cruelties heaped upon them by their captors. You will want to encourage him to keep the faith and not give up as he is pushed to the limits of human endurance time and again. He survived, and after years of soul searching finally decided to write this book. It is his story but it is also the story of others who gave so much to preserve the freedom we enjoy today. Read his book. You owe it to yourself.

This book will make you WANT to be 70 - I kid you not!.......2004-01-02

Incredible book - fun to read, I read it in my 40s and it served to light the way to how I want to age (in a serious and realistic and fun way - not something superficial like wearing purple or being ornery). Should definitely be brought back into print as we baby boomers NEED this kind of wisdom... Letty Cottin Pogrebins Getting Over Getting Older is also good - she nailed that what throws the whole game is being able to handle our loss/losses. That this is what separates the Great Elders from, well, the older folks none of us wants to become...

i wasn't as inspired by the On Women Getting 40, 50, 60 in the series - don't know if it's because these 70ish women were/are such amazing human beings - or if 70 is a better stage in life ... so I'd check them out of the local library - or BUY them for the local library to have on hand... but THIS BOOK YOU WANT TO OWN and refer to and pass around and buy for others! Made me love the prospect of Old Age and showed me women I could emulate. Thanks, Cathleen - a book that should live forever - it's that definitive. Teens and young people should read it - they'd benefit from the wisdom of these "happening chicks"! An attractive preview of how the Endgame can be if you want to make it --- from women who hardly had everything breaking their way throughout life. You close the book thinking "ain't life grand even when it ain't grand?!"
