    Book Description

This conference provided a forum where researchers and industrialists working with glass and thin films, could meet and discuss common, complex problems. Many apparently old fundamental procedures and processes are still under investigation, due to their complexity. In particular it is often so that experience dictates the operating conditions, e.g. a special glass treatment or a special coating process rather than the understanding of the treatment or the process itself. It was therefore the aim of this conference to discuss the various problems and to deepen the knowledge that is useful for industrial situations. Based on the fundamental steps of glass fabrication, modification and film deposition, and property studies and the search for possible applications, a wide range of glass and plastic treatments have been carefully considered in this book by experts working in the field.

3 out of 5 stars Omits obvious visual and intuitive ways of looking at concepts........2006-10-23

This book is wordy, but less clear than I think it could be. It moves slowly, yet omits helpful ways of looking at concepts in the interest of being elementary. Also, it does not pave the way for future study of the material, nor does it pave the way for later study of connections to algebra, analysis, or combinatorics.

This book overlooks intuitive, visual ways of representing basic concepts. For example, lattice/Hasse diagrams helped me understand divisibility and GCD's, but this book does not even mention this way of looking at divisibility. Congruence relations can be visualized in a number of ways, but this book only treats them using basic algebra. A book that moves as slowly and is as elementary as this one should really explore these sorts of visual presentations of concepts.

Since this book is elementary, it does not explore any connections to groups, rings and ideals, fields, or lattices, and I think this is a shame because these structures make number theory make more sense. I think the book would do better to introduce a few of these structures in a very basic way. The book also passes up the opportunity to introduce generating functions, a critical and fairly elementary topic in number theory, which are only touched in one exercise. The first few chapters of Wilf's Generatingfunctionology and Newman's "Analytic Number Theory" show that generating functions can be presented at an elementary level.

There are blurbs of history interspersed throughout the text, and I like the idea, but the history focuses almost exclusively on biographical information, with a tiny bit of history of famous problems and conjectures. There is little discussion of how the core mathematical ideas in the book were discovered and evolved over time. This book would do well to cut out the biographies and replace them with richer discussion of the historical development of the subject itself.

I like the idea of a number theory book that focuses on applications, but this book does so at the expense of other things: its treatment of truly fascinating topics (such as continued fractions) is so weak that I do not think it's worth the trade-off. The book does nothing to pave the way towards the study of either analytic or algebraic number theory. The Zeta function only gets a token mention.

This book is usable as a textbook or for self-study, but it is not outstanding for either of these goals, nor is it useful as a reference for advanced students. Studying from this book alone won't help one develop a good sense of intuition in number theory. Stillwell's thin book is about as easy to follow as this one, and yet it slowly introduces ideals and other algebraic concepts by the end of the book. My favorite book on number theory is Apostol's "Analytic Number Theory". It is considerably more advanced than this one, but I think that students with a strong background will actually find it easier to learn from. I have not yet found a truly elementary book on number theory that I liked; I think students would be better off to first acquire enough background and mathematical maturity to dive right into some of these more advanced texts, than to spend their time working through a book like this.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to a vast, fascinating subject.......2006-05-16

This book is awesome. Tons of material covered, but at a decent pace and with good examples. All the reader needs is a good working knowledge of how to read and construct proofs, and the time and patience to get through the material. The exercises range from the computational to the theoretical, from the routine to the extremely challenging. Many of the examples and exercises are intriguing, well-known results. The author touches on a large amount of subject matter and has many references for those interested in further reading. He makes no use of any of the methods that come from the main branches of Mathematics, namely Algebra, Analysis, etc. (though he mentions a few famous results), but he also mentions that he will not be using these methods in the beginning. It starts off a bit easy but gets moderately challenging. This book will never leave my shelf, and has sparked an interest inside of me that shows no signs of burning out. Again, an excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars Good foundational text for Cryptography.......2005-05-17

I bought this book as a supplemental study guide - my course was a mix of Number Theory, Abstact Algebra, Finite Fields and Probablility (pre-requisites for Cryptography study). The professor used lectures with hand-written supplements as primary study media.

I found this text to be well-written, each concept was dealt with separately and concisely, then later assimilated with others to form broader ideas. Even though the text is directed at Number Theory, many of the other related concepts I studied were mentioned or covered in this text.

This book will stay on my bookshelf for quite a while.

4 out of 5 stars Very helpful resource.......2005-03-05

I'm currently taking a Discrete Mathematics class that is a stew of number theory, abstract algebra and probability.

This books has been very helpful as a reference as my professor teaches the course from his own lecture materials that often do not provide enough examples or coherent explanations.

The chapters on cryptography add a welcome flavor to the material.

4 out of 5 stars Very helpful for the Learning Undergraduate.......2004-11-20

This books gives an excellent background to elementary number theory. I've found this book gives lots of examples, theorems that are helpful with interesting excercises. What I do find frustrating is that here and there the methods given are innefficient compared to what my proffesor teaches in class. As well some of the proofs are written as one giant run on sentance, and written line by line. This is VERY hard on the eyes and totally annoys me.

                        Book Description

The Unknown Bobby Fischer is really four books in one. First of all, it is a detailed look at Fischer's formative years when the young genius went from struggling Class B player to U.S. Champion in the space of two-and-half years. Published accounts of the time, reminiscences and rare photos serve to shed light on a part of Bobby's career that is rarely examined.

But Fischer is not the only subject. The 1950's were a golden time for American chess. The Byrne brothers, William Lombardy, Raymond Weinstein, Edmar Mednis, Arthur Bisquier, Larry Evans. . . the list of strong players coming up with Bobby goes on and on. The Unknown Bobby Fischer examines some of these players and lesser-known stars of the day including Charles Kalme, Larry Remlinger, Anthony Saidy and Abe Turner along with outrageous organizers like the legendary E. Forry Laucks of the Log Cabin Chess Club.

John Donaldson's earlier book, A Legend on the Road (ICE 1994), looked at Bobby's 1964 Transcontinental Exhibition tour in great depth. That 124-page book prompted a flood of letters from readers. Now International Master Donaldson and co-author IM Eric Tangborn offer the reader more than 40 pages of new material on the 1964 tour, including seventeen recently rediscovered games from Bobby's exhibition in Wichita.

All told, The Unknown Bobby Fischer offers the reader 87 games, many heavily annotated. Thirty-seven of the games have never been published or have appeared only in periodicals or tournament bulletins!

The book concludes with rare interviews and an in-depth look at the large body of literature on Bobby. The authors list their top ten favorite books on Fischer in English and offer the reader an extensive bibliography for further research. Useful player and opening indexes round out this book designed for both die-hard Fischer fans and those interested in an overview of a rich period of American chess history.

5 out of 5 stars Bobby Fischer and other players/stories.......2002-03-28

This book isn`t only about Fischer. It contains many stories about Fischer and other players. It contains many games of Fischer, but also games between other players. It contains pictures of Fischer and other players too. What i especially loved about this book was the stories, about Fischer and other players. It contains many games from Fischer`s 64 simul tour of the US, and quite a few stories from these simuls. It contains articles and other things. " A Bookstore in Argentina " was quite intriguing, but as was other stories and stuff. It also contains letters from Fischer to Larry Evans in the 70s. It is all in all a great book about chess. It isn`t a teaching book, but many stories about players in the 50s,60s and 70s. Combined with interwievs, pictures and other stuff. Many games are included, and in a sense i do believe we can all learn something from these games...you know what i mean when i say it isn`t a teaching book. This book is a true treasure, and while i admit i regret buying mnay of the books i own this one is great.
It`s ashame it`s currently out of print, especially since it is a newer book ( 1999 ). If new copies arrive, or you see it in a used book-store grab it and never let go!!

This is the best first chess book for the new or inexperienced player. It's unique automatic learning system makes it stand apart from all others. Teaches basic chess rules and moves, basic chess tactics and the most common checkmating patterns. Very notable is that more time is spent on mating pattern recognition [the art of the kill] than other chess primers. Bobby makes learning the fundamentals easy, fun, understandable, and enjoyable. The automatic learning system is cutting edge and incredible. Just turn the pages and learn as the excercizes increase in tiny degrees of difficulty ever so gently, systematically and methodically. No need for a board or to know chess notation. Ignore reviewers who knock this book. They don't get that this is a great beginners book, not a treatise on chess. It offers what you need to know to get started. For more on the openings, middle and end game play, strategy, tactics, combinations and more, I recommend The Complete Chess Player and/or The Complete Chess Course, both by Fred Reinfeld, after this book. If you want to learn the worlds greatest board game, or are a novice player seeking to improve, Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess is THE book for you. It will ease you into good chess play with brilliant simplicity.

5 out of 5 stars Arguably, the best chess tutorial ever written.......2007-09-08

A must have for anyone wishing to learn chess from scratch, and for all beginning level players. Fantastic reading which requires no chess board. Great companion for those long plane or train trips.

5 out of 5 stars In a Category All its Own.......2007-07-28

For the right person at the right point in learning chess I believe that this is the best book. I am a USCF correspondence chess master and over the board expert. I credit this book to getting me a good start.

Chess is a skill. Learning a skill requires practice. This book helps develop that skill and the pattern recognition that goes along with that. It does so in a way that is not intimidating. It does not teach all chess tactics. It just gets you started on the path to tactical mastery, but it is a good start.

It has a unique programmed instruction format that does not require learning chess notation. This is significant as "learning a new language" just to learn chess is off putting and creates obstacles to learning the game. After an introduction to the rules the reader practices chess tactics in a variety of positions of increasing difficulty. This book helps to build a strong foundation of tactical skill.

If you can routinely solve simple "mate-in-two" problems quickly you probably already have the skill this book can teach. If not, I think this book will improve your game.

5 out of 5 stars The Title Says, "Teaches".......2007-05-01

TEACHES! You teach beginners, whether you're Bobby FIscher (a pompous lout) or the faculty advisor of a grammar school chess club. In that respect, this is a great beginner book.

Which is why, when I was looking for a "teaches chess" book twenty-five years later, this is the book I looked for.

No, it will not make you an expert. You can't get that from a book. But for the basics, nothing beats this book.

5 out of 5 stars Handy To Keep Close.......2007-04-23

A great beginner book on the essentials of chess, if your new to chess or it's been awhile since you played this is a perfect book to go through. It starts out explaining the moves of chess for the total beginner. A really nice feature of this book is a chess set is not needed, all the examples of the book you can work through right in your head. The puzzles are listed on one page and the answer is located on the back of the page. The size of the book is small enough to fit in a coat pocket for those times when you have some time to kill. Overall a great book for the beginner.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on a fabulous chess match.......2006-07-28

This is an excellent book about Robert Fischer's Candidates Matches and World Championship match. In 1972, Fischer won the World Chess Championship due to his superb play in these matches.

Robert Byrne's descriptions and analyses of these games tend to be extremely good. And for the games against Boris Spassky for the Championship, we see additional analysis from Ivo Nei, a member of Spassky's team.

The book starts with Fischer's 6-0 win against Mark Taimanov. I have always been very impressed by Taimanov's play at the piano keyboard. But I admit I was astonished by some of Taimanov's blunders in this chess match. In Game Two, Taimanov threw away an endgame that even I would have drawn easily against anyone. I've seen grandmasters make some crazy errors, and this was one of the most amazing. In Game Five, Taimanov made another incredible mistake, soon after adjournment no less, to throw away an obvious draw. Still, these errors merely shortened the match by a game. I liked all of Byrne's notes to these games.

Next is Fischer's 6-0 win against Bent Larsen. Game One was truly exciting, and I wish Byrne had given a better analysis of the position at move 25. Game Four was a shock to me: down 3-0, I expected Larsen to play something safe for White against Fischer's King's Indian Defence, maybe 6 Be3 (which Larsen had done very well with in the previous few years). But Larsen proved in his games with White that he had no intention of drawing any games against Fischer. And he sure didn't, even though he certainly could have drawn at least two of them had he been willing to.

After that, we see Fischer's slaughter of ex-World Champion Tigran Petrosian. Petrosian prepared very well for this match, but that meant having to get into some wild positions. Petrosian got big advantages in the openings of the first three games, but he still had only one win, one draw, and one loss from them, which is not surprising considering that Fischer was simply a better overall player and that Petrosian was a little out of his element in a couple of the good positions he got into. After two more draws, Fischer won the next four games and the match. Byrne once again does a fine job of describing everything.

The match with Spassky was one of the best chess matches ever (although I may be more than a little biased, given that I attended some of the games). And this is the book to get to read all about it. That includes descriptions of some truly strange moments, such as Fischer's forfeit of Game 2. Game 15 was absolutely fantastic and unforgettable, but several other games were almost as exciting.

There are a number of changes that one might want to make in the analyses, given the knowledge of some of the positions that the past three decades have brought. But not as many as one might expect: that is a great testament to Byrne's expertise and hard work in writing this book.

Still, I'll give a couple of examples of very minor things I would have said differently. In Game 10, Spassky could not save the endgame after adjournment because Fischer could not be stopped from winning Spassky's Bishop. Not only that, Spassky's Bishop could be taken at any point, so Fischer could improve his position as much as he wanted to before taking it. Rather than simply say this, Byrne merely praises Fischer's play before winning the Bishop. That is reasonable, but it fails to explain what really made Spassky's position so bad. When Fischer finally wins the Bishop, Byrne comments "Another little added touch - the Bishop is won by force." That misleading comment is, in my opinion, Byrne's worst error in this entire book. Nei, of course, confirms that he and Spassky realized the position at adjournment was hopeless, but he also fails to explain all this.

Another comment I dislike is Byrne's description of the end of Game 17. The game reached adjournment, but as Ivo Nei explains in this book, he and Spassky realized that it could not be won. Since there is nothing to be gained by trying to avoid a draw in an unwinnable position (Taimanov and Larsen had already shown that), they clearly decided to take the draw. When Spassky showed up to play out the adjournment, he did something unique in the match (I was there so I saw it). He played his moves as fast as he could, taking something like a second per move! It was obvious to me that he was settling for a draw; there was no other possible explanation. Byrne does not mention this, merely saying "Spassky's falling into a threefold repetition of the position right at the start of the second playing session seemed strange." And he says that Spassky looked unhappy when the referee confirmed the repetition! I think that's misleading; it looked to me that Spassky was actually trying to repeat the position a fourth time when the referee stopped the game.

Anyway, these are extremely tiny problems with the best book I've seen on this glorious chess match. I highly recommend this book.

The author collected about a hundred (I didn't really count them) of Fischer's games, together with some chess problems and some GM and master games to draw the parallel between Fischer's play and chess great players'. The author grouped the games in endgames, middle-games and openings. Fischer had many outstanding endgames, but also there were a few games he was lucky to draw it because his opponents missed the wins. There too were some games Fischer couldn't win because of lack of experience (the next time around he would win convincingly after reviewing the theory). The part of middle-games showed how much better and stronger-will he was compared to his opponents. About the openings we all know Fischer had a narrow repertoire, however his is deeper than anyone before and after his time. There had been some systems he was not lucky with, but he stuck to them throughout to prove his points. Then by his most important match, the championship match with Spassky, he sprung out the Queen Pawn opening, the Alekhine and some he seldom employed. And he won! There were not many drawn or lost games of Fischer's in this book, but they are instructive. (And it's good for us to know.)
The games in the book were not deeply analyzed but there are many of them. With a computer programs it is easy to improve the analyses. As the title said, "The chess of Bobby Fischer." It's all about the chess skills or the psychology that Fischer experienced during the games. For more of the personal aspect, the book by Gufeld is a good complement to this book.

This book is well written. It has fascinating positions where Fischer may or may not be winning material wise. The downside is that the notation is quite antiquate. You have to remember K for King and Kn for Knight. I prefer N for the latter. The algebraic system is better.

Notation aside, this is a big book with lots of great games. I think you'll be surprised by the authors work.
