    Product Description

Nearly thirty years ago, in 1974, the volume on Angiotensin edited by Irvine H.Page and F. Merlin Bumpus expanded the Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology. Even after two decades the multiplicity of its actions appears not to have been fully discovered. To call attention to its many functions is one of the purposes of this book. This new edition of the volume on Angiotensin attempts to provide an updated account of the knowledge and findings accumulated since the complexity of angiotensin was so accurately recognized.

                Product Description

Entry Inhibitors in HIV Therapy presents the current status of this relatively new and highly dynamic class of inhibitors and provides a unique overview of obstacles and considerations for HIV entry inhibition compared to other antiretroviral targets.

The introductory chapters of this book present an overview of entry inhibitors, review current knowledge of how Env mediates entry, and discuss the challenge of genetic diversity in this region of the viral genome. Subsequent chapters feature current information on individual classes of entry inhibitors that target each step of the virus entry pathway, from attachment to membrane fusion. There is an emphasis on the complex determinants of entry inhibitor susceptibility, resistance mechanisms, the need for clinical phenotyping, and how these issues create new challenges for antiretroviral therapy. Encouraging pre-clinical studies of entry inhibitors as microbicidesare also discussed. The final chapters highlight the current status of entry inhibitors in clinical studies, the major milestone achieved with FDA approval of enfuvirtide, and review drug development, past and present.

In summary, this book presents a comprehensive and current overview of entry inhibitors from an expert panel of authors with diverse backgrounds and perspectives, incorporating many unrelenting successes against a backdrop of formidable challenges. It is of interest to basic science researchers as well as clinical physicians.

                      Book Description

First appearing in the late 1980s, wavelets have developed rapidly, and their applications now reach from signal processing to numerical analysis, operator theory, and beyond. Among the generalizations of wavelets that have emerged, multiwavelets stand out because of their potential for short support and for their capability of being both symmetric and orthogonal. Some existing wavelet books have a short section covering multiwavelets, but to date, none offer a comprehensive treatment. Pulling together information scattered throughout the literature of mathematics and engineering, Wavelets and Multiwavelets offers a full exposition of wavelet and multiwavelet theory. Maintaining the delicate balance between mathematical rigor and readability, the author presents the theory of classical wavelets and general m-band multiwavelets in parallel. This provides a more coherent approach and yields alternative proofs and new insights even for standard wavelets. MATLAB routines that allow you to implement and experiment with multiwavelet algorithms are available from the CRC Press Web site.

                      5 out of 5 stars For students........2004-12-10

While there has been a number of recent wavelet books on the market covering a variety of aspects of this important subject of applied math; of those books only a few are good for use in a beginning course; the kind of course aimed at advanced undergraduates, and at students in related fields of math such as numerical analysis; and students from other departments, especially students from engineering departments: EE, medical imaging, and Computer and Electrical Engineering; to mention just a few.
The present book seems especially pedagogical well designed for student needs; and the author clearly had students in mind. Rather than delving into a variety of technical issues, the book goes directly to the underlying geometric ideas that students can understand at an intuitive level; without too much background. The algorithmic steps in the subject well presented, and they are essential both for the theory, and for the applications to the analysis of number sets (data mining), of pictures, and of many other applications.
The book is certainly more limited in scope than for example Daubechies's book that appeared in the SIAM series in 1992, but it is also gentle on students, and is likely to serve as a lovely invitation to the subject.
When the students progress in the course, they will then build up a deeper understanding of the fundamental ideas, which in fact are quite simple when isolated from the traditional rather heavy notation and terminology. The fundamental ideas are nicely illustrated with tree diagrams which also serve as the underpinning for wavelet programs.
An additional advantage of this little book is that students will be able to get hands-on experience with graphics, and with MATLAB routines, as they work their way through the book.

                        Book Description

This volume contains refereed research articles on the active area of wavelets and multiwavelets. The book draws upon work presented by experts in the field during the special session on "Wavelets, Multiwavelets and Their Applications" at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in San Diego (January 1997).

Wavelets were implicit in mathematics, physics, signal or image processing, and numerical analysis long before they were given the status of a unified scientific field in the late 1980s. They continue to be one of the few subjects that have attracted considerable interest from the mathematical community as well as from other diverse disciplines where they have had promising applications. The topic is in full evolution, with many active research efforts emerging from the fruitful interaction of various mathematical subjects and other scientific disciplines.

                        Book Description

Devil's Game traces the amazing career of Charles A. Dunham, Civil War spy, forger, journalist, and master of dirty tricks. Writing for a variety of New York papers under alternate names, Dunham routinely faked stories, created new identities, and later boldly cast himself to play those roles. He achieved his greatest infamy when he was called to testify in Washington concerning Abraham Lincoln's assassination. Many parts of Dunham's career remain shadowy, but Cumming offers the first detailed tour of Dunham's convoluted, high-stakes, international deceits, including his effort to sell Lincoln on plans for a raid to capture Jefferson Davis.

Exhaustively researched and unprecedented in depth, this carefully crafted assessment of Dunham's motives, personality, and the complex effects of his schemes changes assumptions about covert operations during the Civil War.

Cumming's book on Charles Dunham -- known to many by his most prominent alias, Sanford Conover -- fills a gap in Civil War research in the most delightful manner. Dunham's various ploys, scams, and intrigues, under a dozen different alias', are fascinating and dizzying, and Cumming's clever tracking of this ellusive fellow is very satisfying. Better by far than fiction, the outlandish story of Dunham -- including his employment by the gov't to perjure at the trial of the "conspirators" to murder Lincoln -- is quite a ride.

Certainly a must-read for those who've read the Trial, and want to understand Conover's frustratingly confusing testimony.

In September 1989, Doreen Orion was just beginning her psychiatric practice when one of her female patients developed an erotomanic obsession with her. Over the next eight years, this patient skulked outside of Orion's house and at her workplace, leaving bizarre messages, watching her, and making her unwelcome presence known in virtually every aspect of her life. In I Know You Really Love Me, Orion recounts her legal and emotional struggles as she tried to take control of the situation.

As a psychiatrist, Orion has fascinating insights into the condition that causes some people to obsess inappropriately over others. She also describes compellingly the feelings of helplessness and fear that stalking causes its victims--but always with the compassion and understanding of someone who works with the mentally ill. Her unique perspective as both a victim and a professional makes I Know You Really Love Me not just a blow-by-blow account of a stalking, but a practical guide to understanding, avoiding, and discouraging stalkers. --Lisa Higgins

                            Book Description

Locked in a ward of an Arizona psychiatric hospital, the patient called Fran looked harmless, even ordinary.  Meeting her, psychiatrist Doreen Orion had no warning that Fran suffered from erotomania, the bizarre mental disorder that causes stalkers to believe their victims are in love with them--and no inkling that she would be the next target of Fran's twisted, dangerous mind.

Now Dr. Orion reveals how she has been spied upon, accosted, and hunted for eight years, living in fear of her life and the lives of those closest to her.  Changing her address and job, getting restraining orders and having Fran arrested, have all failed to end Fran's obsessive behavior, which continues to this day.

Recounting the ordeals of Madonna, David Letterman, and scores of others who have been terrorized by stalkers, Dr.  Orion alerts potential victims to this increasingly deadly disorder--and tells what society must do to       protect us all from those who would kill for love.

4 out of 5 stars Orion Turns Her Ordeal Into Our Education.......2004-12-17

The author, psychiatrist Doreen Orion, wrote this book to educate others about stalking, especially of the erotomanic variety. Erotomania is best known to most of us through mass media, which reports on those creepy individuals who go around convinced that celebrities are in love with them, married to them, etc. But this kind of stalking also happens to regular folks -- like Orion, whose chance encounter with a psychiatric patient turned into a years-long ordeal, with the patient following her, sneaking into her house, phoning, leaving letters, and even traveling from state to state to maintain unwanted contact with Orion.

Orion recounts her ordeal and intersperses it with information she learned when she applied her psychiatric and research skills to her own predicament. The result is what she intends. Her own experiences cause us to empathize with her, and putting ourselves in her shoes, we can see that being stalked (even by a person unlikely ever to attack one physically) is a harrowing, psychologically draining, altogether awful ordeal. Over and over, Orion ran into people who, never having experienced it, consider such devotion from another no more than a nuisance. Orion proves differently. And her description of the psychological condition of erotomania and the development of laws to counter it are interesting, and deep enough to teach something new even to those with long experience in the medical or criminal justice fields.

On the other hand, Orion's conclusions about what to do with the problem of erotomania seem to directly contradict what she says in her book. After noting again and again that punishment does not stop erotomanic stalkers, she says that maybe if they are punished more, they will stop. Longer imprisonment is probably a good idea, if only because while stalkers are in prison may be the only time their victims get any rest, but Orion's justified anger may be affecting her clinical judgment when she says extra punishment will do anything else.

And this is clearly Orion's first book, and possibly her editor's too. She misspells "aid" as "aide" and "loath" as "loathe," errors a spell-checker can't catch but she or her editor should have, and her writing starts out bland and clumsy. What is remarkable about this is how quickly her writing improves over the course of the book. In the beginning, I was wondering whether I could endure her style long enough to finish, but by the end she had found her voice and I was turning pages frantically.

Even before Orion's writing gels, though, the information she imparts makes her book a worthwhile read. There is more to the "celebrity stalker" type than meets the eye, and there are more of them than we know. Those who work in medicine or the law, especially, need to learn what Orion is teaching.

4 out of 5 stars Brief response to Leah.......2004-09-02

In a highly readable form, this book very well presents the facts concerning stalking. It would have benefitted from a decent editor (for example, to get rid of inappropriate use of subjunctive, change "led" for "lead,") but overall, I recommend it strongly.
Leah complains that another reviewer mistakenly stated that Tim, Dr. Orion's husband, was her supervisor. It is Leah who is mistaken: on page 102, she explicitly states that they met when he was her resident supervisor and she a medical student.

                            5 out of 5 stars Supervision.......2004-06-26

Actually, if you look on page 114 of the paperback edition- the author writes,"Ever since the day Tim and I had met, I as the fourth year medical student and he as the second-year resident assigned to supervise me..." Her fiance was, in fact, her supervisor for awhile. I don't think this fact detracts the the book's overall impact and importance, however.

5 out of 5 stars Riveting Read, Crucial Information.......2002-07-18

This book blew me away. It is full of important information, not just for stalking victims, but for potential victims as well (ie all of us). But, more than that, this true story reads better than any fiction thriller out there. A friend who had been stalked, and found this book priceless, lent it to me. I could see why it had been so important to her, but even though I had never been stalked, I still found it to be a great read.

One more comment - I read the review below - Dr. Orion's husband was NOT her clinical supervisor. They were just in the same residency program. I'm not sure where this person got that erroneous info, but I just wanted to set that straight, as it would certainly effect the story if it were true, and I might not have read the book if I'd read that review, first.

3 out of 5 stars excellent, but lacking a fulfilling depth.......2001-09-08

excellent because: grippingly written, obviously well-researched, carefully thought-out, and with powerfully expressed feelings of terror and powerlessness.

my critique: it sounds horrible to say, but I wonder if Doreen Orion really did all she could to protect herself from her stalker. it struck me that her only real growth in the book in relation to her stalker was to become a better legal advocate for herself, and as such the book degraded from a personal journey into a legalistic and advocacy morass.

then: I couldn't help but raise an eyebrow when she said how she met her psychiatrist fiancé - that he was her THERAPEUTIC SUPERVISOR! she failed to see the parallel in power dynamics between the beginning of her relationship with her fiancée and the beginning of her "stalker's" relationship with her! although I don't want to jump to any conclusions, I felt this was completely unmined territory in the book (and in Orion's personal life), and my raised antennae tell me there's more to this than meets the eye...

some other questions in the same vein: it seemed, as of publication of the book, that Orion's stalker was still at large, and would almost certainly read this book. why would Orion even open this door? I think she, like many writers and would-be famous people, use the most awful bits of their own personal life to launch themselves into the public eye, to get even more famous - but wouldn't that just fan the flames of an erotomanic? perhaps at some deep and unspoken-of level, despite her true horror of being stalked, she gets some primal gratification from the attention of her stalker, and somehow her stalker picks up on it...like the two of them feed each other...and actually are in a relationship.

finally: never does Doreen Orion mention some vital relationships of her own - that with any therapists of her own, or, and I think most importantly, with her parents. I can only wonder what knowledge of the dynamics between Orion and these important others would add to my understanding of her apparently still-evolving relationship with her stalker.
