    Book Description

Activated Metals in Organic Synthesis discusses fundamental principles of the generation of activated, highly reactive metals, and their applications in organic synthesis. Following an introductory chapter on basic forms of metals the chapters in Part 1 are devoted to common strategies utilized for the preparation of active metals. These strategies include vaporization and subsequent co-condensation of metal atoms, in addition to depassivating methods employed commonly in laboratory syntheses. Chapters in Part 2 discuss relevant organic transformations in which metal activation plays a crucial role. Specific topics covered include metal-induced reductive methods; pinacolic, Reformatsky-, and Barbier-type reactions; McMurry ketone-olefin coupling; and the Bernet-Vasella reaction. Each chapter is followed by literature citations ranging from specific references to significant reviews. Many structural formulas are provided, making it easy to follow each synthesis. The book will be an important reference for students, organic chemists, and researchers in all areas of organometallic chemistry.

    Book Description

The rapid growth of wavelet applications-speech compression and analysis, image compression and enhancement, and removing noise from audio and images-has created an explosion of activity in creating a theory of wavelet analysis and applying it to a wide variety of scientific and engineering problems. It becomes important, then, that engineers and scientists have a working understanding of wavelets. Until now, however, the study of wavelets has been beyond the mathematical grasp of many who need this understanding. Most treatments of the subject involve ideas from functional analysis, harmonic analysis, and other difficult mathematical techniques. Wavelets and their Scientific Applications offers an introduction to wavelet analysis without mathematical rigor, requiring only algebra and some very basic calculus. The author stresses applications, and explains, using elementary algebra, how wavelet methods are typically applied in analyzing digital data. Software is available for download through CRC's Website that will enable recording, playing, and modifying sound files, and includes a facility for displaying, printing and modifying IEEE gray field images. Unlike other software packages for wavelet analysis, the author developed this attractive, easy-to-use software without the need for a C++ compiler or MATLABä. Throughout the book the author provides numerous suggestions for computer experiments designed to challenge and enhance the reader's comprehension and provide practice in applying the concepts learned. Wavelets and their Scientific Applications thus provides the perfect vehicle for understanding wavelets and their uses. It provides a fast-track learning opportunity for scientists and mathematicians unfamiliar with wavelet concepts and applications, and it is ideal for anyone without an extensive mathematical background.

1 out of 5 stars My school must not have been very good.......2007-09-05

Mathematicians may find the "elementary algebra" in this book to be free of "mathematic rigor," but stupid people like me who went to public school will probably feel otherwise after struggling through the first page. I'm still looking for the wavelet equivalent of the excellent "Who is Fourier?"; this book is definitely not it, and it's definitely not worth $40.

5 out of 5 stars A Primer on Wavelets and Their Scientific Applications.......2006-08-22

This book is an excellent one to learn the fundamental concepts of the wavelet transform. I recommend to study this book before starting or while studying another more mathematical text.

    1 out of 5 stars A rip-off.......2006-05-31

This is undoubtedly the bigest rip off of the century - I am sorry that I have spent this exorbitant amount of money on such rubbish. Here we have a book that purports to be some kid of advanced mathematics - NO WAY - this is not mathematics the publisher should be castigated ferociously. The author has no concept of what mathematics is all about he is obviously some kind of engineer and thinks that the use of mathematics is mathematics he is of course very wrong. For example, consider his definition of "scalar product" (p11), he says this is is an operation between two "signals". Sorry the scalar product is an operation between two elements of any vector space. As a mathematician I found this treatise offensive and puerile. It should have had the title "Signal Theory" but that might not have had the readership. Give me back my money!!

4 out of 5 stars A little pedantic at times, but generally quite good...........2006-03-20

At times, particularly at the beginning, the author seems almost patronizing, but generally the tone and level of the book is just where it should be for what seeks to be a primer. However, it is unfortunate that one of the primary functions in the software is not more fully described in the text; it is only described as the method of preparing many of the examples.

Overall, an excellent start for somebody who knows little or nothing about wavelets.

5 out of 5 stars From zero to doing transforms in 138 pages.......2006-01-27

What I really like about this book is that it starts straight off discussing wavelets. Lots of other books on the topic start by introducing Linear Filters, Fourier Transforms, etc., and don't get to Wavelets until 100 pages into the book.

I also have to say that the author's writing style is almost shockingly clear, allowing the reader to make rapid progress through the material. The extensive use of examples also helps illuminate how to perform the steps discussed in the text.

In terms of coverage, this book is almost entirely about Discrete Wavelet Transforms. The third chapter devotes two sections to Fourier transforms, and the final chapter devotes two sections to continuous wavelet transforms. Many other books spend half or more of their space discussing these topics. For readers interested in using wavelets for analysis of data sampled by computer, this emphasis on discrete transforms won't pose any problem at all - that is exactly the type of transform required.

In terms of the book's contents, my only complaint is that there isn't enough discussion on which of the various families of wavelets to use for a given task. For example, some differences between the Daubechies and the Coif wavelets are provided, but in many of the examples, the author uses one of these without discussing why it performs better than the alternatives.

Also, readers should be aware that the website listed in the book as the place from which to download the author's free wavelet analysis software is no longer available. Instead, I found a link to the FAWAVE software on the authors own personal page at http://www.uwec.edu/walkerjs/

Overall, I strongly recommend this book to readers new to the field of wavelets, to those that have been previously frustrated by overly thorough texts on the topic, and even to those classifying themselves as math-phobic. It is a clear, practical introduction to a powerful field of data analysis.

4 out of 5 stars Wavelets: from valley to crest.......2000-12-13

Choosing a book on Wavelets to use as material for an introductory course is far from simple: there are many books on the subject and often the mathematical starting level of the audience is not uniform. But the book by Blatter is in my opinion very good if one wants to start from scratch (well, not quite of course: some knowledge of Lebesgue integration and infinite dimensional Banach and Hilbert spaces of functions is needed) in a mathematical or technical environment.

Starting with 2 chapters on Fourier analysis, going from windowed Fourier transform to a first introduction of continuous wavelet transform (CWT), and giving connections to several well known facts from signal analysis (the Heisenberg uncertainty priciple and the Shannon sampling theorem), the theoretical framework of the CWT is given in chapter 3. Interesting are the results on the decay of the wavelet transform in terms of the smoothness of the signal and the number of vanishing moments for the wavelet.

This is followed by a chapter on the important subject of 'frames' and one on multiresolution analysis (the foundation for the hierarchy of orthonormal bases for L^2(R)). The scaling function (time domain) is actuallly constructed from its properties in the Fourier domain (i.e. the frequency domain).

The final chapter treats the basic idea behind and constructions of orthonormal wavelets with compact support (including the Daubechies wavelets), also touching upon binary interpolation and so called spline wavelets.

For applications to a host of disciplines it is possible to consult one of the many applied books: in my opinion it is necessary to have a firm grasp of the underlying theoretical framework before really understanding what one is doing. I have nothing against applications, but once one has to go back to the roots: back to the valley to be able to reach the crest of the wavelet without accidents.

    4 out of 5 stars A real primer.......2000-10-04

This booklet, the translation of the original German version "Wavelets - Eine Einfuehrung" (published by Vieweg-Verlag), is indeed a real primer.

It removes old layers of thinking about the structure of signals and replaces them by an elegant formalism rooted in the theory of Hilbert spaces and orthonormal bases.

A graduate background on Hilbert spaces (L_2 etc.), the Fourier transform and some integration theory (Lebesgue integration) is recommended.

There are very few (easily corrected) typos and the book can be used as a basis for a one quarter course of 4 hours each week during 7 weeks (or a semester of 2 hours), with a backing of handout problems on several aspects of the theory.

4 out of 5 stars Good on theory-bad on application.......2000-07-11

This book is a good tool for those who want to explore the mathematical rigors of wavelet theory. The "primer" assumes that the user is a fairly well versed mathematician, but the derivations are complete. There is little to nothing said about the practical applications of wavelets. For applications, look to other books.

    Book Description

Stephen Decatur was one of the most awe-inspiring officers of the entire Age of Fighting Sail. A real-life American naval hero in the early nineteenth century, he led an astonishing life, and his remarkable acts of courage in combat made him one of the most celebrated figures of his era.

Decatur's dazzling exploits in the Barbary Wars propelled him to national prominence at the age of twenty-five. His dramatic capture of HMS Macedonian in the War of 1812, and his subsequent naval and diplomatic triumphs in the Mediterranean, secured his permanent place in the hearts of his countrymen. Handsome, dashing, and fearless, his crews worshipped him, presidents lionized him, and an adoring public heaped fresh honors on him with each new achievement.

James Tertius de Kay is one of our foremost naval historians. In A Rage for Glory, the first new biography of Decatur in almost seventy years, he recounts Decatur's life in vivid colors. Drawing on material unavailable to previous biographers, he traces the origins of Decatur's fierce patriotism ("My country...right or wrong!"), chronicles Decatur's passionate love affair with Susan Wheeler, and provides new details of Decatur's tragic death in a senseless duel of honor, secretly instigated by the backroom machinations of jealous fellow officers determined to ruin him. His death left official Washington in such shock that his funeral became a state occasion, attended by friends who included former President James Madison, current President James Monroe, Chief Justice John Marshall, and ten thousand more.

Decatur's short but crowded life was an astonishing epic of hubris, romance, and high achievement. Only a handful of Americans since his time have ever come close to matching his extraordinary glamour and brilliance.

The Marine Hymn says, "From the halls of Moctezuma to the Shores of Tripoli." I always wondered about "the shores of Tripoli" part of that Hymn. I didn't learn anything in US History classes about it nor about "the hero" of Tripoli, Steven Decatur---at least until I read this book. Exciting reading about a true American Hero who lived at the beginning of our Country. Recommended! boland7214@aol

5 out of 5 stars Life of a Great Naval Hero.......2007-08-09

This biography of one of our great naval heroes should inspire anyone. It is all the more relevant today because it deals with his conquest of the Barbary Pirates, whose philosophy is very similar to that which is held by many of the denizens of the same geographic area today.

We could learn some important lessons from his valiant actions and love of Country, and the bold response of Thomas Jefferson.

5 out of 5 stars This is an excellent book.......2004-12-29

If you're a fan of historical novels, and sometimes suspect that the heroes in those stories strain credulity, then this book will disabuse you of that fear. True, it isn't a long book--it may not weigh enough to make a sufficiently loud thud when landing on the desk of an academic (I agree with a previous review's implication that it would not be a good reference book). But it makes for a compelling read, a fascinating story that is well-grounded in its historical context.

    3 out of 5 stars I expected better.......2004-06-29

I ordered this book without too much thought as I had read James DeKay's previous book on the British, then American, frigate Macedonian. Decatur was responsible for the Macedonian's capture so I assumed that the biography was a natural fit. Unfortunately, I was disappointed to receive such a thin, light (in many senses of the word) tome. Perhaps, I'm attracted to more scholarly endeavors but I found the book slight where I longed for depth and detail. There was little new material in the book and sometimes I thought it was just a quick rehash of notes set down for the book on the Macedonian. That it came out about the time of the ill-fated Master and Commander movie makes me think it was also rushed. One of the founders of the American Navy living in such a colorful period of history and, in many ways, being the epitome of his time, deserves better.

5 out of 5 stars Full of Action and Detail.......2004-05-01

James Tertius De Kay's book A Rage for Glory, is a great book which gives insightful inside look at the life of one of America's first Naval Heros. De Kay writes this book not for naval scholors but for the average reader who may not have any prior knowledge of teh Naval history of the Early Republic. The book is not a difficult read and will leave the reader with a better understanding of the role pirates played in the 19th century as well as the roles the U.S. Navy had in the War of 1812. The book concludes with the tradgic death of Decatur while defending his honor in a duel with another fellow naval officer. In all this book should be read by any lover of early American history or any military reader.

When Julia Tavalaro opened her eyes after spending seven months in a coma, she awoke to a nightmare. Nobody in the hospital ward to which she had been consigned even noticed that she was alert. Paralyzed and unable to speak, Tavalaro had no way of making them take notice. She spent the next six years languishing in her bed, and although able to hear everything around her, she was unable to communicate.

Finally, a young speech therapist broke through Tavalaro's isolation by composing a method by which Tavalaro could spell out words with her eyes. After mastering the technique, Tavalaro went on to write poetry about her life both before and after the stroke that crippled her. Tavlaro is able to recall her past in minute detail and weaves her memoir from threads of the past, her present, and her poems that transcend the two. Look Up for Yes is the courageous story of a woman struggling to find her voice and make it heard.

        Book Description

More than thirty years ago, Julia Tavalaro woke up from a coma to find herself almost completely paralyzed by two strokes that had also left her unable to speak. Suddenly, just thirty-two years old, she was a prisoner in her own body and a victim of the ignorant and cruel treatment of hospital workers who neither noticed nor cared that the "vegetable" they changed and fed every day was actually a bright and emotional woman. In this powerful memoir, painstakingly written with the help of poet Richard Tayson, Tavalaro details the hellish life she endured as a defenseless patient, angry and desperate to die, and the liberating actions of two therapists who took the time to realize that she was not incognitive but rather brimming with intelligence and life. At last,Tavalaro managed to break through the isolation that imprisoned her. Slowly, methodically, she regained her ability to communicate--aided by technological and therapeutic developments--and began to compose poems that drew on the memories of her life before her stroke. Beautifully written and achingly heartrending, Look Up for Yes is a testament to a passionate and articulate woman who is ready and able to let the world know she is, indisputably, alive.
Tavalaro has been the subject of profiles in Newsday, the Los Angeles Times, and The New York Times, and has been featured on Dateline NBC and Sally Jessy Raphael.

Those who weap because they have no shoes should meet this woman who has no feet, no hands, no voice, no normalcy. And yet she greets the day with poetry and refuses -- against odds few people could bear -- to loosen her grip on reality, on the future, on hope. Where some autobiographical writers might seek our pity, Julia demands our respect. Where some labor to generate tears, Julia aims to generate cheers -- and at times outbursts of profanity. Her story is a fast, easy-to-follow read packed with flashbacks, present-day tales and, the most essential element of all, hope
