Book Description
A multidisciplinary and multifaceted approach is employed to identify principal ecosystems and natural resources in the U.S. Great Plains that are at risk and that should receive priority for protection. The authors are drawn from a variety of disciplines and approaches, their ideas being presented as a pooling or harvest, rather than as a consensus. The 25 chapters provide background and in-depth discussion of multiple issues/problems related to Great Plains stewardship for future generations. The status and trends of major resources of the Great Plains within an historical, ecological and management framework are categorized according to common goals across the disciplines and can be used to make recommendations for public policy, research and development, and institutions. The challenge for residents of the Great Plains is to merge multiple ecosystem concepts to improve the environment and to improve economic vitality.

Book Description
This book tells the story of 22 boys who grew up in a small western Colorado town during the Great Depression and how they dealt with their circumstances. It also delves into each individual's WWII experiences and what each one did after WWII to help build America into what it is today. Each chapter is loaded with emotions and humor.
How many other young men from other small towns across America have shared similar experiences? This book will appeal to all veterans as well as our young people and the public in general.
Book Description
We live in a world where rock superstars, athletes, celebrities, and successful business people are paraded across the big screen and featured on the news as though beauty and fame and money and power made them modern-day heroes. We seem to have lost sight of what a real hero is.
Yet America needs true heroes now more than ever. Not Supermen with super hero powers, but real men and women of character who will stand up and with conviction, make right and often hard choices in every circumstance. People who show us what it is to be good, to be brave, to be guided by conscience and character. Men and women who are examples, whose courage shows us the way we should go.
Congressman Jim Ryun has provided a wealth of stories of quiet historical heroes who have, for the most part, been ignored by popular culture and nearly lost in the mist of the past. This book is not about popular heroes or cultural icons such as George Washington or Abraham Lincoln. These heroes were common people who stood firm in the face of tyranny, to give their lives for others, and to right the wrongs of social injustice. Their stories will inspire you to rise up to slay the dragons of your world.

Basics Blinded by the Lights.......2006-01-15
Often blinded by the lights, bells and whistles of what appears to offer the best and brightest among us and often leaves the basics of character, judgement and morality the sad consequence of being left behind in the race for popularity, power and wealth. Seldom is loyalty among those qualities.
Like a Christmas tree usurping the real meaning that Christmas was meant to observe, commercialization is often the outcome praised and enviable that ignores the lasting quality of more altruistic ideals or grandeur of simplicity that formed the anchor for such celebrations.
The ability to keep foresight and hindsight allows the abilities of real heroes to maintain their luster despite the lures of momentary treasures and excitement of temporary thrills.
Inspiring and Motivating.......2002-07-29
Heroes Among Us describes the lives of lesser-known heroes who found the courage to stand up and give their all for what they believed to be right. Some stood on battle fields, some in court rooms, some in mission fields. All made a difference in the world that we know today. Written by Congressman Jim Ryun, former Olympic runner, devout Christian and hero in his own right, Heroes Among Us will inspire and motivate readers to find the hero within themselves.

In Everyday Heroes: Extraordinary Dogs Among Us, photographer Mary Bloom and author Sherry Bennett Warshauer tell the remarkable stories of service dogs who are guides, healers, therapists, and, in many cases, the bridge to a normal, fulfilling life for many patients and owners. Through the eyes of individuals and owners who have seen firsthand the effects of their special dogs, the reader experiences the many ways in which canines are able to make a difference in our lives. One of the most inspiring stories is of a dog named Guapo, whose sensitivity caused him to be removed from the Guide Dog program, but made him a perfect match for working with emotionally abused children. In fact, for a young boy dealing with his parents' messy divorce, Guapo was the link that allowed him to communicate his feelings. Guapo's head in the boy's lap and a lick on the cheek were the keys necessary for the boy to break down the protective wall he had created and, eventually, to help him understand his emotions. Accompanied by Bloom's stirring photographs, such heartwarming, uplifting stories make this collection perfect not only for animal lovers, but also for anyone who needs to be reminded of the power of compassion and friendship, whether the friend is a relative, a significant other, or a special canine. --Jennifer Pugh
Book Description
These are the stories of heartwarming experiences with dogs bred and raised by the Guiding Eyes for the Blind. This book will have great appeal to dog lovers and those interested in innovative ways to assist people with special needs. Its greatest appeal, however, will be the human interest in the lives that have been dramatically altered by these wonderful dogs. Sherry Bennett Warshauer, from White Plains, New York, has spent many years volunteering at the Guiding Eyes for the Blind Breeding Center. Everyday Heroes was shot as a photo essay by the talented professional photographer Mary Bloom. All of the author's profits are being donated to the Guiding Eyes for the Blind.
Customer Reviews:
Heroes Indeed!.......2000-12-12
I'm a sucker for stories about dogs, whether fiction or non-fiction. If you also fall into that category, you'll enjoy "Everyday Heroes." This short book consists of brief "biographies" of dogs who provide great service and love to their masters. All of the dogs in these true stories were raised by volunteers from a great organization called Guiding Eyes for the Blind. Some of the dogs are not quite suited to life as guide dogs, but are perfect for crime fighting work. All of these dogs are truly heroes in every sense of the word.
If you love dogs.......2000-06-06
I am a owner of a black lab and I got this book. I fell in love with it. The stores of these dogs and what they do to help touch so many lives. Please get this book and read. Some will make you cry.
Sherry's "Everyday Heroes" is splendid- cover to cover!.......1999-05-08
"Everyday Heroes" is filled with wonderful true stories of Guiding Eyes for the Blind's special creatures; those who have become successful guide dogs for the blind, and those who decided on a career change, be it drug sniffing, assistance, or therapy dogs. As the blind partner of a guide dog featured in the book (my second guide, Merlin, who has since passed away), I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to Sherry for including our story in this lovely book- it is truly a tribute to my faithful friend. Anyone who loves dogs exhibits a level of compassion which is sadly uncommon in our world today- read this book, and feel that compassion within its pages.
A wonderful and sensitive insight into some very special dog.......1998-10-13
Sherry Warshauer has written a wonderful book that gives a glimpse into the every day life of some extradonary dogs. She includes a wide range of uses of these specially trained animals from Guiding Dogs to drug and arson sniffing and special needs dogs. She also beautifully discribes the role of the puppy raisers as well. She has illustrated the very real need for these special creatures and made raising them even more meaningful for me and my family.
A pleasure to read. Informative. Inspiring........1998-08-29
Animal (and human) nature and behavior at its very best!
As "Assistance" and "Service" animals are becoming increasingly visible in the community, a heightened sense of public awareness is useful and valuable. Ms. Warshauer's beautifully-written narrative, along with lovely photographs by Mary Bloom and others, make Everday Heroes a book for both youth and adults.
I must add that the vignette about "Ramsey," the Guiding Eyes for the Blind dog guide who was raised by a family in New York City and is now "working" with a blind pianist in Jerusalsem, Israel, was of particular interest to me.
Without hesitation, I recommend Everyday Heroes to all who love dogs and believe in the strength of the human spirit.

A Short History of World War II
ASIN: 1888223367 |
Book Description
This book is comprised of 12 stories by World War II veterans. These detailed and compelling stories bring a critical time in our history back to life. Editor Jane Cox helps these veterans tell their stories in their own voices, sharing with us their life-changing experiences.
Customer Reviews:
Compelling Voices.......2002-12-30
Editor Jane Cox presents 12 compelling voices from ordinary Iowa people who were just doing what was expected of them during World War II. In these stories, we read human details from people who had not spoken about their experiences for decades, and we are fortunate that those experiences are now immortalized so that in this time of the 30 second political spin, we can not forgot the real sacrifices that the everyday person was willing to make to secure the freedom of so many people unknown to them.

Product Description
The four years America was involved in World War II was but a blip in time when viewed from the grand scheme of time itself. However, to those who lived through it and especially to those who served in it, it was the single most defining "adventure" of their lives. This book contains personal experiences from over 200 veterans, plus hundreds of pictures.

My Hero Among Us - SSGT. Richard M. Coble, AUS.......2005-03-30
I always knew there was something special about "Uncle Dick."
My fathers' younger brother was a true gentleman. I never heard a harsh word from him about anything or anybody, the whole time I knew him. He was devoutly religious and took church and Sunday school very seriously. Yet there was something I just couldn't put my finger on as a youngster growing up in our small Pennsylvania town, something that made "Uncle Dick" different from most of the other fathers of my school pals. This is a must read for anyone "Searching for a hero." Stories such as these, accounts of small town America's, sons and daughters experiences during WW II must be preserved for posterity.
Sgt. 1st Class James D. Coble
Nephew of Sergeant "Dick" Coble
I loved this book.......2004-09-17
This is a wonderful book. I read it from front to back and it gave me a deeper understanding of heroism and the sacrifices we raise our sons to be prepared to make, as citizens of our country. It made me realize how many individuals I've encountered in my 40-some years of life who were unsung heroes, humble in a way that my generation has perhaps never truly understood. I cannot look at an elderly American gentleman without a newly realized deep respect after reading this book. I was surprised at how many women served, as well, all hailing from a small town in 1940's central PA. This book was great.
WWII , Heroes Among Us.......2004-09-07
This book is a must read for anyone interestesed in WWII history and personal experiences of veterans. Their stories evoke both tears and smiles. There is nothing like it in print today. It is truly outstanding!
Product Description
This is a historical and inspirational look at America's veterans from World War II through our current conflict in Iraq.
Customer Reviews:
excellent patriotic book.......2006-05-10
One of the best historical books I have ever read. I purchased a few for gifts for my family. Any patriotic american would enjoy this book.
Very moving.......2006-05-05
I read this book and bought 2 more to give as gifts. Very detailed. The veterans experiences, as told by them; not someone else's commentary or "historical" account of the war but what these veterans actually experienced and their perceptions of war. This book has increased my gratitude for our veterans and I've read several excerpts to my sons to help them to understand the value of sacrifice and patriotism and gratitude for our veterans and our freedom. This would be a great book to use in history classes.

Book Description
ÂThis book is a must read for anyone suddenly faced with such a lifestyle change.Â
Pulitzer Prize winning film critic, Roger Ebert
The book describes the authorÂ's life using a wheelchair from the time the bullet went though his spine at the age of six to the present, over 60 years later. While the focus tells of the successes and failures of a person who has a strong desire to excel despite not being able to walk, it also details many of the advancements in rehabilitation since 1943. With as many as 10,000 persons in this country suffering spinal cord injuries each year, the author feels some in the medical profession have no idea how to properly treat and care for this kind of long-term injury.
The author gives advice to persons with spinal cord injuries that he hopes will allow them to live a full and rewarding life. He also talks with parents and caregivers about the importance of making the newly injured individual aware that the wheelchair is only as limiting as the person wants it to be.
The book describes in great detail his relationship and marriage for 44 years to a woman who also uses a wheelchair.
Customer Reviews:
Yes, Tom Jones is Real.......2003-07-25
Tom Jones worked high-profile and high-pressure broadcasting and public relations jobs from college until retirement, loves his wife of 40-plus years (and loves sports almost as much as he loves his wife), makes friends at the drop of a hat, fished from Florida to the Arctic Circle, traveled overseas, is an enthusiastic volunteer worker and is walking his fourth dog. All while in a wheelchair. Tom was shot accidentally when he was 6 years old. His wife, Louise, has been in a wheelchair since she was stricken by polio at 18. They have lived in their own home since their wedding. How did Tom do it? He gives the details in his autobiography. He also provides sage advice for other people with disabilities, for their care-givers and for those who care about them.
Yes, Tom Jones is for Real.......2003-07-24
Here's a man who worked from early college days through retirement, has been married to the same wife since graduation, has always lived with her in their own home, does a great deal of volunteer work, has a multitude of friends, fishes from Florida to the Arctic Circle, travels overseas, walks his dog. Tom Jones has fit more into his life than most of us -- especially since he has worked and played in a wheelchair since childhood. His wife, Louise, has used a wheelchair since her teens. In his vivid autobiography, Tom also provides important advice for other people with disabilities and the people who know them.
Life Can Bite You In The Butt If You Let It. Tom Didn't........2003-05-27
HANDICAPPED OR ABLE BODDIED, THIS IS A MUST READ! At age six Tom's life on legs ended with a bullet to the back. An adventure on wheels began. An adventure that is still unfolding. If you want to learn for yourself how to turn a bite in the butt into your own adventure, this is the book to read.
Most of us probably do not have the inner strength to rise above the life trials that Tom faced as 6 year old paraplegic and to this day. I don't know if I would have. However, after reading Tom's account of triumph over the odds, I believe he has given us all an insight into how to face the trials of our own lives and conquer them.
For the last 37 of my 46 years, I have had the privilege of calling Tom Jones my friend, no, more than that, family. I never knew all the details of how he landed in his wheelchair. All I knew is he was a constant strength that rolled into my life and I could rely him. Some 23 years ago my own life was tested by fire. Tom and his wife Louise were there to share the encouragement that I would need to make it through. On one of my deepest days of despair, Tom rolled into my room, took me by the arm and told me not to give up, he would always be there for me. He always has.
Reading Tom's book, I understand now how he became the strength that I and many others have come to appreciate. Hurdles in life are meant to be taken in stride, not become impassible obstacles. And Tom's life continues to show just that.
This is a quick and easy read. One that will challenge your life and the way you confront the trials that you will come your way.
