      Book Description

This textbook provides a comprehensive modeling, reformulation and optimization approach for solving production planning and supply chain planning problems, covering topics from a basic introduction to planning systems, mixed integer programming (MIP) models and algorithms through the advanced description of mathematical results in polyhedral combinatorics required to solve these problems. This book addresses solving real life or industrial production planning problems (involving complex production structures with multiple production stages) using MIP modeling and reformulation approach. It is based on the twenty years worth of research in which the authors have played a significant role. One of the goals of this book is to allow non-expert readers, students in business, engineering, applied mathematics and computer science to solve such problems using standard modeling tools and MIP software. To achieve this the book provides an introduction to MIP modeling and to planning systems, as well as a unique collection of reformulation results, integrating them into a comprehensive modeling and reformulation approach, as well as an easy to use problem-solving library. Moreover this approach is demonstrated through a series of real life case studies, exercises and detailed illustrations. Graduate students and researchers in operations research, management, science and applied mathematics wishing to gain a deeper understanding of the formulations and mathematics underlying this approach will find this book useful because of its detailed treatment of the polyhedral structure of the basic lot-sizing problems and simple mixed integer sets that arise in more complicated problems. Reading this book will allow the reader to improve formulations of non-standard MIP models much more effectively and produce state-of-the-art models and algorithms.

        Description:
Several types of regulations limit the amount of different emissions that a firm may create from its production processes. Depending on the emission, these regulations could include threshold values, penalties and taxes, and/or emission allowances that can be traded. However, many firms try to comply with these regulations without a systematic plan, often leading not only to emission violations and high penalties, but also to high costs. In this paper, we present two mathematical models that can be used by firms to determine their optimal product mix and production quantities in the presence of several different types of environmental constraints, in addition to typical production constraints. Both models are comprehensive and incorporate several diverse production and environmental issues. The first model, which assumes that each product has just one operating procedure, is a linear program while the second model, which assumes that the firm has the option of producing each product using more than one operating procedure, is a mixed integer linear program. The solutions of both models identify the products that the firm should produce along with their production quantities. These models can be used by firms to quickly analyze several ''what if'' scenarios such as the impact of changes in emission threshold values, emission taxes, trading allowances, and trading transaction costs.

          Description:
This article presents a mathematical model for the problem of production and logistics in the forest industry. Specifically, a dynamic model of mixed-integer programming was formulated to solve three common problems in the forest sector: forest production, forest facilities location and forest freight distribution. The implemented mathematical model allows the strategic selection of the optimal location and size of a forest facility, in addition to the identification of the production levels and freight flows that will be generated in the considered planning horizon. A practical application of the model was carried out, validating its utility in the location of a sawmill. The model was optimally solved using LINGO, which also allowed to evaluate its response capacity in relation to changes in information considered in the initial planning, as well as the comparison of the decisions and the solution times for different scenarios such as demand, transportation costs, timber prices and yields of the sawn process.

            Description:
This paper addresses a blending and shipping problem faced by a company that manages a wheat supply chain. The problem involves the delivery of bulk products from loading ports to destination ports, which may be served by different vessel types. Since the products demanded by customers are mainly exported in bulk to overseas customers, the shipment planning is of great economic importance. The problem is formulated as a mixed-integer linear programming model. The objective function seeks to minimize the total cost including the blending, loading, transportation and inventory costs. Constraints on the system include blending and demand requirements, availability of original and blended products; as well as blending, loading, draft and vessel capacity restrictions. When solved, the model produces: (1) the quantity of each original product to be used to make blended products, (2) the quantity of each product to be loaded at each port and to be transported from each port to each customer, and (3) the number of vessels of each type to be hired in each time period. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the feasibility of the real world bulk grain blending and shipping model.

              Description:
The development of optimization models for planning and scheduling is one of the most useful tools for improving productivity of a large number of manufacturing companies. This paper presents a mixed-integer programming model for scheduling steelmaking-continuous casting production. We first review the recent works in continuous casting planning. We focus on a model inspired from an application of steelmaking-continuous casting by Arcelor Group in Liege, Belgium. The process scheduling is characterized by several constraints: job grouping, technological interdependence, no dead time inside the same group of jobs and dynamic processing time of jobs. We present a formulation with mixed-integer linear programming which can be solved using standard software packages. Finally, we treat a few examples to illustrate this application and we conclude this paper with some comments and directions for future extensions.

                Description:
Setup operations play an important role in many production environments. In this paper, the exact modeling of setup times is motivated and two mixed integer programming model formulations are proposed. These model formulations allow the representation of ''long'' setup times with respect to the length of a planning period, which are widespread in process industries. Computational results underscore the importance of careful modeling of setup times and demonstrate the capabilities of the two proposed model formulations.

                  Description:
This paper examines a multi-item dynamic production-distribution planning problem between a manufacturing location and a distribution center. Transportation costs between the manufacturing location and the distribution center offer economies of scale and can be represented by general piecewise linear functions. The production system at the manufacturing location is a serial process with a multiple parallel machines bottleneck stage and divergent finishing stages. A predetermined production sequence must be maintained on the bottleneck machines. A tight mixed-integer programming model of the production process is proposed, as well as three different formulations to represent general piecewise linear functions. These formulations are then used to develop three equivalent mathematical programming models of the manufacturer-distributor flow planning problem. Valid inequalities to strengthen these formulations are proposed and the strategy of adding extra 0-1 variables to improve the branching process is examined. Tests are performed to compare the computational efficiency of these models. Finally, it is shown that by adding valid inequalities and extra 0-1 variables, major computational improvements can be achieved.

                    Description:
We examine the problem of planning the operation of an air separation plant where the price of its primary production input, electricity, changes hour to hour, a situation commonly referred to as real time pricing (RTP). We present a solution approach where operating decisions are obtained from optimizing a mixed integer program embedded in a rolling horizon procedure. A simulation study is conducted to assess the effect of unreliable and finite information on the efficiency of the operations plans generated by the procedure. Results of the study suggest that the rolling horizon procedure generates robust plans. An additional simulation study is conducted to identify the conditions under which RTP is attractive vis-a-vis other selected electricity pricing schemes. Results of the study indicate that RTP is most appealing when there is substantial flexibility in the operating environment in terms of the load placed on the plant (customer demand) and with regard to ramp-up (akin to set-up) times. Although this appeal diminishes with increased loads and longer ramp-ups, it is nevertheless the case that the operational inflexibility must be significant before RTP loses its allure. Scope and purpose: This paper considers the plant operation problem faced by firms in the industrial gas industry with production facilities where the price of the primary production input, that is electricity, changes hour to hour, which is often referred to as real time pricing. The purpose of this work is to present an optimization based planning approach that rigorously takes into account the realities of this environment. In addition this work seeks to identify, through the use of simulation, the conditions under which real time pricing is most appealing vis-a-vis other electricity pricing schemes, and also the degree to which planning horizon length and uncertainty in electricity prices impact the efficiency of the operations plans generated by our planning approach.

                        Book Description

"An uncannily honest writer." -- New York Times Book Review

The novelist and journalist Amitav Ghosh has offered extraordinary firsthand accounts of pivotal world events over the past twenty years. He is an essential voice in forums like The Nation, the New York Times, the New Republic, Granta, and The New Yorker, Incendiary Circumstances brings together the finest of these pieces for the first time -- including many never before published in the States -- in a compelling chronicle of the turmoil of our times.
Incendiary Circumstances begins with Ghosh's arrival in the Andaman and Nicobar islands just days after the devastation of the 2005 tsunami. We then travel back to September 11, 2001, as Ghosh retrieves his young daughter from school, sick with the knowledge that she must witness the kind of firestorm that has been in the background of his everyday life since childhood. With a prescience born of experience, Ghosh warned decades ago of the dangerous rise of religious extremism.
In his travels he has stood on an icy mountaintop on the contested border between India and Pakistan, interviewed Pol Pot's sister-in-law in Cambodia, shared the elation of Egyptians when Naguib Mahfouz won the Nobel Prize, and stood with his threatened Sikh neighbors through the riots following Indira Gandhi's assassination. With intelligence and authentic sympathy, he "illuminates the human drama behind the headlines" (Publishers Weekly). Incendiary Circumstances is unparalleled testimony of an era defined by the ravages of politics and nature.

Amitav Ghosh is acclaimed for his political journalism and his travel writing. The New York Times Book Review called his travelogue, In An Antique Land, "remarkable . . . rivals anything by the masters of social realism in modern Egyptian literature." He is also the best-selling author of four novels, including The Hungry Tide and The Glass Palace, which has been published in eighteen foreign editions. Ghosh has won France's prestigious Prix Medici Etranger, India's Sahitya Akademi Award, the Arthur C. Clarke Award, and a Pushcart Prize. Educated in South Asia, the Middle East, and the United Kingdom, Ghosh holds a doctorate in social anthropology from Oxford. He divides his time between Harvard University, where he is a visiting professor, and his homes in Kolkata, India, and Brooklyn, New York.

                        Advance Praise for Incendiary Circumstances

"This absorbing collection of essays by the novelist, journalist, and travel writer Ghosh . . . covers some two decades of catastrophe and upheaval, from sectarian violence in his native India during the 1980s through the September 11 attacks . . . to the recent Indian Ocean tsunami. With an eye for evocative detail, he illuminates the human dramas behind the headlines: the plight of tsunami refugees trying to rebuild their lives and finances after every bank record and piece of ID is lost to the waves; the courage of ordinary Indians protecting their Sikh neighbors from rampaging Hindu mobs . . . He is equally engaging when he turns from current affairs to literary essays on, say, the international culture of novel reading or the Kashmiri poet Agha Shahid Ali. Written in luminous prose with unusual understanding . . . an insightful look at a chaotic world." -- Publishers Weekly Starred Review

                        Praise for Amitav Ghosh

"Ghosh is adept at delineating the complicated crosscurrents of emerging national independence movements. He is even more impressive at portraying the different ways in which individuals react to the turmoil, hardship, and disorientation wrought by war." – Wall Street Journal

"A wonderful hybrid of travel writing, reporting, historical analysis, and memoir – in other words, the kind of piece [Ghosh] writes better than almost anyone else." – Washington Times

5 out of 5 stars Good piece .......2007-01-14

A collection of articulate essays written at different times and on different places and about different experiences. Though the piece on 9/11 was disappointing. It lacks depths of the other essays. The reader gets a glimpse of different places, different people, different politics, and of course how the "incendiary circumstances" have changed/affected/moulded peoples lives across borders. A superb pastime reading indeed !

4 out of 5 stars Some excellent writing.......2006-10-13

This book is a collection of essays, written from a variety of locations around the world for various magazines, over the past fifteen years or so, by the Indian journalist Amitav Ghosh. To my taste they were uneven in quality. The first piece in the book, covering the effects of the 2004 Tsunami on the Indian inhabitants of some islands to the southeast of the Indian mainland, is beautifully written, engrossing and stands out as a masterpiece. It was very worthwhile reading a piece about life in India by a gifted Indian writer.

I learned a good deal from a number of the other pieces as well. However the quality of the pieces seems to go down in relation to the distance Ghosh is removed from what he knows best (India and Indians), he has a habit of trying a little too hard to have profound insights, and seems a little preachy at times. On the other hand, as someone from a different background, I found the book quite useful for improving my knowledge of Indian viewpoints on topics dealing with politics and society.
