    Book Description

Theodore Frankel explains those parts of exterior differential forms, differential geometry, algebraic and differential topology, Lie groups, vector bundles and Chern forms essential to a better understanding of classical and modern physics and engineering. Key highlights of his new edition are the inclusion of three new appendices that cover symmetries, quarks, and meson masses; representations and hyperelastic bodies; and orbits and Morse-Bott Theory in compact Lie groups. Geometric intuition is developed through a rather extensive introduction to the study of surfaces in ordinary space. First Edition Hb (1997): 0-521-38334-X First Edition Pb (1999): 0-521-38753-1

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic - for the scientist.......2007-07-18

A very good book: buy it. But only if you are a scientist or student of physics/mathematics. This is not popular-science-common-public level.

    5 out of 5 stars a book worth keeping.......2007-05-01

This book can be quite confusing if you start without any background on the idea of manifold or knows nothing about general relativity. However, it does have strong points:

    1. The notation is very up-to-date, and is entirely coordinate-independant approach.

    2. The author explains in great details of formulation of modern differential geometry, and the details are comparatively lacking in other reference books.

    3. The author never hesitate to use graphs and diagrams to illustrate points, and stroke nice balance in between mathematics rigor and physical insight.

Although it appears quite verbose at some point, it is mainly because differential geometry is such a heavy subject. Another book nice to have as companion reading is Goldburg's "Tensor analysis on Manifold", a terse, well-written text book.

    5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal .......2006-11-13

I just finished reading this book and I found it phenomenal. The physical ideas are made very clear in a natural mathematical framework.

5 out of 5 stars You should buy this, despite its flaws.......2006-03-03

The other reviews on this page give this book anywhere from 1 to 5 stars, and they are all correct in their own way. The book is inspired, deep and full of physics applications and insights. On the other hand, it skims over mathematical rigor to a large degree and focuses more on defining things, getting a feel for them and moving on to application.

My advice: buy the book for its strengths, and read other books in parallel if you need more rigor. But still, buy it.

Also, things can be confusing on the first two or three reads, but keep at it and you will be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect first book in differential geometry.......2005-01-28

Differential geometry can be a very intimidating subject due to its heavy formalism. There are complete books (such as Kobayashi& Nomizu) very good as reference books, and there very few books that show the reader the picture behind the formulas.

This is one such book. It tells you the intuition behind each construction and from this point of view it has many things in common with Arnold's famous book on Math. Methods in Classical Mechanics. But where as Arnold does not pay too much attention to formalism, this book achieves this task as well. It shows the reader how to do those impossible computations as well.

This is definitely the first place to look at if you want to really learn differential geometry. If it seems difficult it is only because the subject is so.

5 out of 5 stars Fine, fine book.......2007-09-15

Read this in China. I gave it to a passenger on the plane on the way back. I just had to encourage someone else to read it!

Very good book. I was really drawn into the story. Written in colloquial Welsh. The family and related townies are so aptly described that you really get to feel for them. Highly recommended. A good primer in fisticuffs, also.

BTW, I tried watching the old movie (40/50's) afterward, but it was bad (not just in comparison to the book, but in it's own right). Your mileage may vary.

    5 out of 5 stars Welsh Gem.......2007-01-12

The title say it all. A delightful book, allowing the reader to live that life in the little coal mining town of the mid 1900's. Sad & joyous - just as life is!

5 out of 5 stars Dear Reader, here's a book for the eye, the ear, and the heart........2006-07-11

The reviewer Tom from Texas reflects my exact sentiments. The prose in this novel is so achingly lovely, one's eye keeps returning to previous paragraphs, just to see how a certain effect was achieved. The author's words are so gracefully, so musically wrought, I caught myself again and again, reading passages out loud to myself. Llewellyn was a writer of the first rank and this book, his finest work, is among the most beautiful prose creations in English fiction.

    5 out of 5 stars Sublimely Beautiful.......2006-05-09

I have one thing to say about this book: I have NEVER had to go back and re-read so much of any book just for the sheer enjoyment of the passages as I have this one. Mr. Llewellyn's words are so powerful that I wept as I read certain passages, they are so beatiful. As elevated and perfect as human language can possibly get. Read this simply for the joy of words. The story takes a backseat to the storyteller in this one.

4 out of 5 stars How Green was My valley.......2005-10-29

I think that the beginning of the book was the worst part. He started by telling us that he was leaving and wasn't going to tell anyone. He didn't even say goodbye to a lady friend. so he tells us that he's leaving and then he goes back into the past. Back when he was a little kid. He tells about different experiances. how he had to stay in bed for almoxt five years. he tells about all the troubles that his family went through. The end was the best part. i usually hate the endings but this one was good.
this bool is meant for older people who like English books. or is it Ireland. i think it was set in Ireland

                          Book Description

This book explores the legal issues inherent in resolving troubled banking sectors in transitional economies. Bank failures are a recurrent phenomenon in both developed and developing countries, as shown by the crises in the last ten years in the USA, Japan, Scandinavian countries, the Baltic countries, Bulgaria, South East Asia and Latin America. Banks in transitional economies face additional challenges as they become intermediaries in lending the public's savings, rather than mere conduits for the central financing plan. They have to ensure repayment of loans when they no longer receive subsidies to compensate their losses to the same degree as before. As a result of these challenges, almost all these countries have suffered numerous bank failures in the past eight years, with negative consequences for bank owners, managers, depositors and other creditors. The absence, in many situations, of appropriate crisis management procedures and bank insolvency laws hinders the success or pace of the transition process. This book is the result of a research seminar organised by the Centre for Commercial Law Studies, Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London, and the Office of the General Counsel of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). The authors include distinguished US and European professors of banking law, government policymakers, prominent lawyers and economists from the European Union, the EBRD and the International Monetary Fund, and senior industry executives from law firms and financial institutions.

                                    Book Description

The last decade has witnessed an unprecedented growth in insolvency law in many parts of the world. A deep and prolonged recession in Europe, the US, Japan, and beyond has fuelled the development of sophisticated and conceptually complex sets of laws aimed at coping with the consequences of business failure. The existence of an almost simultaneous programme of reform proposals and pressure for further changes in a number of jurisdictions is therefore not mere coincidence, but reflects the global character of the problems caused by corprorate collapse. It is of immense importance to lawyers and insolvency practitioners that they are able to understand recent developments in insolvency law in a number of jurisdictions, and that they are aware of what is happening internationally to improve procedures and methods to deal with new problems. This collection of essays covers recent developments in a number of jurisdictions and looks, also, at developments of the leading corporate insolvency specialists in the US, UK, Australia, Japan, and Canada. This volume will be a vital source of reference on up-to-date matters of law for insolvency specialists everywhere in the world. Contributors: Nick Segal, Axel Flessner, Lawrence P. Book Description

The principal characteristics of legislation governing bankruptcy in Latin America and the protection afforded security interests under such regimes are summarized in this publication. For such purposes, we have examined the bankruptcy laws and related doctrine of five countries in the region: Argentina; Brazil; Guatemala; Mexico; and Panama.

We have reviewed the principal substantive and procedural aspects of the bankruptcy systems of each of the foregoing countries and the manner in which such systems treat security interests. This section provides a general and comparative overview of the approaches adopted by each country for purposes of providing an overall vision of the obstacles a secured creditor may encounter in the region.
