Customer Reviews:
A great book for mathematicians and the best I know for engineers, economists and physicists.......2007-01-24
There is no doubt that Professor Kreysig has written one of the best books of functional analysis. The advantages of this book are the absence of advanced pre-requisites (one has only to know basic concepts of calculus and linear algebra), easy of explanation ( the proofs of the book are really clear), the selection of subjects (one may find in this book more specific topics such as the relation between banach algebras and spectral theory and spectral theory of unbounded operators but also applications such as numerical methods which are very useful for engineers) and the structure of the book (divided in sections with many interesting exercises at the end of each section). Finally, I believe that the main advantage of the book is that, if are not a mathematician, it provides you the motivation to learn these some what abstract concepts.
This book may be used as the main reference in the classroom or also for self-study. In fact, this book is particularly suitable for engineers, economists and physicists. In fact, the last chapter of this book presents an introduction to quantum physics.
A Classic.......2006-12-14
This was my textbook for a graduate course in functional analysis, and it is called "classic" by many professors. Don't be fooled by the title of the book: "Introductory" simply means the author assumes you have not seen the subject before, and it is by no means an easy subject. However, the exposition is extremely clear. Kreyszig saved me on numerous occasions as my companion on a treacherous journey through graduate functional analysis.
This book does what few math textbooks do, though all of them should do. Rather than assail you with theorem, proof, theorem, proof, Kreyszig first tells you what he is about to show you, then explains the motivation -- i.e., why we need the following theorem. Then, once outlined, properly motivated, and placed in context, he delivers the theorem and its proof. Furthermore, Kreyszig explicitly spells out what other texts might assume you will "read between the lines", explaining why and how we are able to take each step forward during a proof.
The problems in the book are also good. They are at a level such that you can attempt them and solve them on your own, while at the same time they give you the hands-on experience you need in order to gain a deeper understanding of the principles at hand. They serve as a great confidence-builder before you venture onward and attempt harder problems (for example, in other texts or in research).
As a final treat for physicists, the last chapter takes the mathematics you've learned throughout the book and applies it in an introduction to quantum mechanics. My only gripe with this final chapter (and indeed my only -- minor -- complaint for the entire book) is that most of the interesting results of quantum mechanics arise not from the book's exposition, but as problems for the reader to work out. Of course, if you want to learn quantum mechanics, this isn't the book to begin with but rather a very nice mathematical supplement.
I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn functional analysis.
Excellent introductory book on functional analysis.......2006-06-16
This book is excellent for so many reasons. The book is self-contained; it is much more accessible than a number of other books. The writing is very clear, occasional use of diagrams is very helpful. Proofs are very easy to follow, and the author gives you a sense of the big picture of the subject before you get to the proof, keeping the reader motivated in a subject that can often seem abstract and boring. The typesetting and layout of the book are also unusually well-executed for a mathematics book: definitions are easy to spot, and the material is presented clearly on the page. The book as a whole is exceptionally well-organized, making it easy to skip around, and making this book an outstanding reference.
One of the best aspects of this book are the examples; the text is rich in examples, especially in the beginning. This aspect drops off a little as you progress in the book, which was honestly a little bit disappointing, since if anything I think it should be the other way around.
The exercises are not particularly difficult, but are appropriate to the level of the book--they will be difficult for people with less background in analysis. Some of them are very easy, others are tedious and/or technical but not particularly deep. I did not work exercises in the advanced chapters as much as the easier chapters though so I can't say about them.
I think some of the more critical reviewers are ignoring the title and audience of this book: this is an introductory book, designed to make the subject accessible at a lower level. For that role, it is simply amazing. Any criticism of this book needs to take this into account--it is not an advanced graduate-level text and should not be evaluated as such.
Good.......2006-01-16
This book is especially good for those who are not mathematicians, and just need some knowledge of functional analysis for computation or application of rigorous theory. This book is well organized in the sense that the shortest path is easily identified for what we want to learn out of this book. I would strongly recommend.
Makes you actually WANT to study analysis!.......2005-12-23
Functional analysis is the branch of mathematics concerned with the study of spaces of functions. It has its historical roots in the study of transformations, such as the Fourier transform, and in the study of differential and integral equations. This usage of the word functional goes back to the calculus of variations, implying a function whose argument is a function. Most textbooks claiming to be introductions to this subject are just one proof after another without a clue as to WHY you would want to study this stuff in the first place. Mr. Kreyszig's book is a welcome addition to the family of textbooks that claim to be introductions to the subject because the material is explained in an accessible fashion alongside applications to the material. So YES as one reviewer put it, this book smells like an engineer's text, but to this reader that is a good thing because I get a feel for how to use the information thus motivating me for further study. I particularly liked the sections applying Banach's Fixed Point Theorem to the solution of differential equations and linear equations. As for the suggestions of other reviewers to reject this book in favor of Rudin's, I think that is a bad suggestion for someone other than a graduate student of pure mathematics. Rudin does a great job of explaining all of the theory, but I think that this book is better at providing motivations for the study of functional analysis through the demonstration of applications. Eventually, you should probably read both books.
Book Description
Providing an introduction to functional analysis, this text treats in detail its application to boundary-value problems and finite elements, and is distinguished by the fact that abstract concepts are motivated and illustrated wherever possible. It is intended for use by senior undergraduates and graduates in mathematics, the physical sciences and engineering, who may not have been exposed to the conventional prerequisites for a course in functional analysis, such as real analysis. Mature researchers wishing to learn the basic ideas of functional analysis will equally find this useful. Offers a good grounding in those aspects of functional analysis which are most relevant to a proper understanding and appreciation of the mathematical aspects of boundary-value problems and the finite element method.

superb introduction to Functional analysis.......2000-08-09
Daya Reddy has produced a new edition of an older text which now has some extra material and has improved the explanations of the earlier edition as well as include many useful diagrams. This is an excellent introduction to Functional Analysis avoiding the often seen theorem/proof approach which overwhelms students who are not literate in the mathematics. All concepts are very well explained and demonstrated, the progression is slow and careful so as not to disallusion students who are not pure mathematicians. Even for mathematicians this is a good, gentle introduction. When I first saw the earlier edition in the library I was captivated by the style and ease of development so I emailed Professor Reddy and asked about a new edition, the preprint of which he sent me to peruse, I then later bought the new one as it came out. The beauty and power of functional analysis is also evident
Well worth buying so you don't get lost in the none too simple mathematics of functional analysis.
The most readable functional analysis book for engineers........1999-05-13
This book is essentially the second edition of his now out of print book titled "Functional Analysis and Boundary-Value Problems: An Introductory Treatment". I like this bood very much. It is not very demanding on mathematical procedures, but lays out the nessary concepts in a very logical progression for Engineers and none math majors, though some math people may not like it. The examples and graphs are very revealing; they illustrates mathematical concepts very well, makes them easier to understand.
I first noticed the power of Functional Analysis when the professor proved that you'll never get a converged finite element results around a point load, no matter how you refine the mesh. The odd things was that he didn't even mention shape functions and stuff; just used some properties of spaces and operators. Though not on the same scale, that reminded me the spirit of Andrew Wiles's proof of Fermat's last theorem. This book easy starters in to appreciate the power and beauty of mathematics.

Book Description
This collection brings together six of Turgenev's best-known `long' short stories, in which he turns his skills of psychological observation and black comedy to subjects as diverse as the tyranny of serfdom, love, and revenge on the Russian steppes. These stories all display the elegance and clarity of Turgenev's finest writing. Richard Freeborn was until recently Professor of Russian at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, London.
Customer Reviews:
It's clear self-sacrifice is sweet for some people.......2005-01-10
This review is about 'First Love'. It follows the reading of three other Turgenev novels - from which you can guess I like this author a lot. In the three earlier novels ('Fathers and Sons', 'Spring Torrents' and 'Virgin Soil') there is one constant theme - men rejecting women - not because they see the women as inadequate, but because they see themselves as unworthy. In this novel it is the woman who does the rejecting - and the person she rejects is herself - instead of withdrawal we now face self-sacrifice. But why did she see herself as so inadequate when she lined up the group of suitors any one of whom would have accepted her much to the envy of all the others? And her self-sacrifice - why is it to the person to whom it is made? Without any regard to the effects on others - they too are all sacrificed.
If you enjoy the company of women as I do, perhaps you will be repelled by lines such as 'fear the love of women; fear that bliss, that poison....' On the other hand this novel - despite it troubled ending - is wonderfully readable and it gave me a lot to reflect on.
Lovely for a first Turgenev.......2004-04-21
I am an avid reader of American and European fiction from the late 19th century onwards and have never delved into the Russians, so, instead of going in headlong to a War and Peace or Brothers Karamazov, i picked up the novella First Love by Turgenev. The writing is simple, the story instantly engaging and the sentiment easy enough to relate to.
Three men sit around following supper and discuss their respective first loves, neither of the first two has an interesting tale to tell, but the third has an intriguing story which he writes down and proceeds to tell us.
Aged 16 our young hero spends the summer in a cottage in the country with his rather detached parents when an aged and impoverished princess and her daughter move in next door. The daughter is beautiful, our narrator becomes infatuated and he suffers all the agony of a first love, a first realisation that such things do not always turn out as we might have hoped, and all the while struggling to understand his own life and his own relationship to his parents.
The twist in the tale is a little obvious and the extra cast of characters perhaps a little under-developed, but the central narrator is a journey through the emotions and his journey is extremely engaging. A very successful first Russian for me and i shall now move on and report back with the findings!!
Wonderful Example of a Russian Romantic.......2000-11-11
This book contains three short works that provide a wonderful example of the Russian approach to romantic literature. The form is wonderful, the characters perfectly created and the plot shores up the authors ideas with an most resonant clarity.
First love shows the blend of comedy and tragedy that is so prevalent in Russian works of the period. The events portrayed are those that could occur in daily life even to today. The emotions that are evoked are real and timeless. It surely adds proof to the argument that Russian works of this period age so much better than do those authors from other countries whose works have survived.
Spring Torrents is the longest of the works and still provides a feel that the length is exactly perfect for the tale. If the prologue does not pull you into the story you have an absences of a great concern that plagues many of us. How many of us fear reaching that point (or have reached that point)in life where we recognize all of the great loss of opportunity which has occurred in our life. From this prologue the story races along explaining how one of us has reached the position when the concern has become a reality. Wonderful feelings are evoked on the path.
This book is highly recommended for all and is a must read for the Tolstoy, Chekov, Gogol and Dostoevsky fans.
An appreciative reader writes...........1999-03-08
First love is a wonderful evocation of youth, love and life in 19th century Russian life. I challenge anyone not to be moved by this book, which is both humorous and touchingly melencholic.
Turgenev's true-to-life writing won me over........1998-09-02
If reading in translation has proved difficult for you in the past, Freeborn's translation of Turgenev's short stories will suprise you in a wonderful way. There were times when I forgot that I was in the process of reading, but rather felt that these very scenes were being lived out before me, a bodiless and voiceless viewer.
Turgenev's understanding of and ability to capture the complete emotional processes of people in love in this collection touched me in its sincerity and genuine clarity. All the insane, skipping-over-themselves thoughts and quick jealousies that people experience are completely captured in stories like "First Love" and "Diary of a Superfluous Man."
Turgenev is a great introduction to Russian fiction. I'm sorry that I didn't discover him earlier.

Customer Reviews:
Short, Simple, and Sweet.......2006-05-26
A delightful read, I recommend this short novel to anyone who enjoys reading about the young human spirit. First French Kiss is unlike anything I have ever read before. The author describes the true nature and emotion of his memories, tying them together in a complete recollection of what adolescence is all about. Thoroughly descriptive, he writes his memories when he lived them, then analyzes them. His memories consist of tiresome camping, moving to a new home, his relationship among expecting peers, and his lion-hearted father. Bagdasarian does not write in a chronological order. This gives the audience a hint of the author's style and the fashion of how we reminisce - we think of an emotion, then an event that triggered the emotion. This book is called First French Kiss, because the first memory he shares with us is his first kiss with his 6th grade sweetheart. Other than that, there are no more kisses; I think the title had more of a capturing mechanism to it. As soon as I read the title, I wanted to know what it was all about. With witty satire, First French Kiss contains many humorous events and the confusion of growing up. Also touching on the mysteries of life, why things change, and death, this short book also explores the realm of curiosities of a child and young adult. Bagdasarian writes in a very conversational tone, which makes it much more enjoyable. I couldn't help myself from laughing out loud at times. He shows us his childhood; he doesn't tell it. With that said, I believe the author wrote this book because he wants to reach out, relate, and share experiences with us. He wants to tell us that growing up is not easy, and that obstacles will inevitably block us from our destination. He wants to tell us that we're not alone, because everyone is having the same triumphs and dilemmas that we are. We're in it together. That, and passing 9th grade geometry.

The rhythm and silenced passion of his writing is amazing........1999-04-26
I enjoyed this book so much that I am currently writing a paper on it. I'm exploring some Beckett's amazing treatment of the conciousness and the movement that is inherent in each of the pieces. I'm also touching on the pieces as they relate to phenomenology and the study of experience expressed in conciousness. Unfortunantly, I need to know how this collection was compiled, when, and under whose authorization. This is very important to my thesis. If any one knows where I could find that information I would appreciate a response.
Wunnerful.......1998-04-23
There are few short stories that leave one feeling satisfied. Fortunately, this is not one of them.
It has been ages since I read it, but I cannot help but recall the feeling it evoked.
All in all, love fails us. All in all, we fail to tell well of the process by which it fails us. Beckett fails better than us all. God bless you, Sam, for always pointing us toward the unutterable. The other stories I do not remember. But "First Love" alone is worth all these fellows ask of you.

Klima's prose is both insightful and beautiful..........1998-06-08
Ivan Klima has a way of telling about life behind the Iron Curtain that somehow doesn't make you pity the people there. His short stories let you explore the past and another culture through the eyes of ordinary people. Klima's style is easy to read and even poetic at times. I would definetly recommend Klima to a friend.
very nice short-stories from the Czechoslovak communism.......1998-02-05
This book shows that even the life in the "goulash communism" had some poetics in it. If you want to learn about the lands that were behind the Iron Curtain and don't feel like going through some horrors or thorough scholarly work - choose Klima.
Book Description
Harold Brodkey's masterful first volume of short fiction, with two never-before anthologized stories.
When originally published in 1958, First Love and Other Sorrows won Harold Brodkey widespread acclaim and announced a brilliant new arrival on the literary scene. Brodkey was hailed as an "unusually gifted writer" (The Atlantic) and a "rich talent" (San Francisco Chronicle), whose stories read like "murmured confidences, highly personal yet carefully contrived" (Chicago Tribune). In First Love and Other Sorrows, the young Brodkey chronicles the world of the educated and affluent middle class of the 1950s, at leisure and in love. He establishes the themes that would appear throughout his career--the painful uncertainties of childhood, the halting intimacies of social life--with rare terness, humor, and haunting insight. Two new stories, never before collected, from Brodkey's early writings join the original volume to complete a much-loved classic.
Customer Reviews:
This guy's got guts.......2006-10-21
He writes like nobody else. His stories contain moments that are so beautifully personal and intimate that they left me amazed and full of admiration. He captures youthful shame, compassion and indifference in a more direct an honest way than any writer I have read. His work is uneven, and there are parts that are an effort to get through, but when he gets it right he reminds me why I love literature, and how thrilling it is to be shown a person's truthful, inner life.
Uncommon Stories about Growing Up, Love & Social Culture.......2004-05-21
This book of short stories provides a rare glimpse and unique cultural viewpoint of growing up in a mid-western working class environment in the late 1940s and early 1950s. ESsentially, the family lived an affluent lifestyle until his father made a few bad business decisions, lost their home, and later died from a lingering illness. The observations and insights Brodkey provides are priceless. He contrasts his position to that of a wealthy friend, whom he met at an Ivy League school and whose viewpoint and values reflect a totally different approach to life. He describes his mother's aspirations for his sister, whose *only* chances for a "better life", i.e., achieving social and economic advantages, was by dating the right class of boyfriend, as she was expected to marry into a higher social class. The "Quarrel" is a story about his visit to France with a very wealthy friend and their adventures and "fall out", when their social, cultural and viewpoints about life clash, resulting in a quarrel with wounded feelings that can never be repaired.
One of my favorite stories is "Sentimental Education" where a male student sees a pretty young lady at the college he attends and longs to meet and date her. He occasionally sees her at different locations but is too shy to speak to her. He daydreams about meeting her as he falls head over heels in love. He discovers she signed up for a Medieval poetry class, so he changes his choice and signs up for the same class. Eventually they meet and discuss literature. The heart of this story is the strong physical and emotional needs that accompnay this "first love' experience. Brodkey is a tremendously gifted author who provides keen and sensitive insights into life as it was lived in the 1950s. He provides an interesting contrast of the viewpoints of working people and those who possess privilege, money, and therefore more power. This is a book rich with detailed observations about social distinctions and the human behavior that accompanies different positions in society. It provides a greater understanding of r life as it was lived within a particular cultural era. This book receives my highest recommendations. Erika Borsos (erikab93)
a moving chronicle of human relationships.......2003-06-02
Harold Brodky was one of the great writers of the last half of the twentieth century. This book is the proof.
An absolute gem of a book.......2002-07-11
This book is just wonderful. The stories are told with finesse and rare magical writing and are told in layers and layers of emotional complexity. This is a fine example of the writing of a brilliant man who was lost to AIDS in the mid-80's. A highly recommended read.
Excellent book.......2002-05-18
Overall the book is ok. But, there are five or six stories that are so unbelievably good they more than make up for the mediocre ones and make this one of my favorite books of all time. Really, a phenomenal read.
