This book addresses problems in structural dynamics and control encountered in such applications as: aerospace structures, robotics, earthquake-damage prevention, and active noise suppression. The rapid developments of new technologies and computer power have made it possible to formulate and solve engineering problems that seemed unapproachable only a few years ago. The treatment combines concepts from control engineering (such as system norms and controllability) and structural engineering (such as modal properties and modal models), thereby both revealing new structural properties as well as giving new insights into well-known laws. The techniques discussed will make it easier for structural engineers to design control systems and for control engineers to deal with structural dynamics. The discussion begins by defining flexible structures and structural models, using such examples as the international space station and the antennas of NASA's deep-space network. The book then turns to controllability and observability; properties of system norms (Häsubinfinityü, Häsub2ü, and Hankel); and model reduction in terms of these norms. A discussion of sensor and actuator location follows: selecting these is rarely an easy task. The concluding chapters discuss the design of dissipative LQG and Häsubinfinityü controllers. Matlab codes for many of the procedures and methods discussed in the book are included.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Dynamic characterization tests were performed on the Advanced Gun System (AGS) vehicle. The tests were designed to provide modeling information for high-frequency shock prediction codes, as well as finite element codes. These data obtained were also used to validate the modeling codes. The vehicle was analyzed in a full-up condition with the turret attached. A model analysis was performed to a maximum frequency of 100 Hz. The high-frequency characterization was performed up to 10 kHz. Methodologies to extract damping estimate up to 10 kHz were developed and implemented. Damping estimates up to 10 kHz were extracted from the structural data obtained during this test.

Excelent book. The BI-RME method is simply fantastic... Absolute state-of-the-art stuff presented in a clear way -provided you have a background in electromagnetism and numerical techniques.

Finally !!!.......2001-07-24

Very good!! finally a book on the state-of-the-art in numerical techniques for passive waveguide components. A lot of original and very efficent numerical techniques are described in detail to compute the modal admittance matrix of both common and arbitrarely shaped waveguide junctions. I found simply fantastic the BI-RME method and the integral equation technique, but I'm not so crazy to try to implement them!! However I think It's very important and instructive to know about these advanced techniques.

To be coherent all over the text, the authors deliberately make an intensive use of the concept of multimodal admittance matrix (GAM), although in some cases working directly with the generalized scattering matrix (GSM) is more simple and efficient.

Even though examples of the developed software are available within the book, only sometimes the authors give enough information about the implementation, so the book may be very difficult for the beginner. Hence I think that a good experience in numerical techniques for electromagnetism is strongly required to really appreciate this work.

Sarton at her Finest.......2007-07-09

This was the first May Sarton book I read. I admit I had never heard of her and am not sure where I picked the book up. I now own a few of her works and will be buying more. This is a wonderful look at the life of a writer, a woman, who buys an older home in an isolated area, and starts a new chapter in her life. She immerses herself in the solitude in order to write, and to bring together different aspects of her life. The title is very appropriate as she talks a lot about gardening and plants AND dreams and hopes. I have passed this on to a friend to enjoy.

This book is about the author's first home purchase in Nelson, N.H. May Sarton does an excellent job telling about her first home purchase by herself, living alone in a small town, the joys and therapies of gardening. If you have never read May Sarton and you are a lover of reading, writing and solitude, you must read this author.

My First Sarton Book!.......2007-02-10

This is the first May Sarton book I ever read.

In this journal Sarton describes buying and moving into an 18th century broken-down house on thirty-six acres in a small New Hampshire village.

She chronicles for us the many varied emotions and pressures involved with getting the house repaired and renovated to her liking.

She describes moving in and then adapting (both as a writer and as a human being) to the solitude of living there alone.

She describes her relationships with many of the people (some of whom are unusual characters) that she comes to know living in Nelson.

She does very well in communicating all the sensory impressions that she experienced living right in the heart of nature and the outdoors.

I read it a chapter a day so that I could allow it to sink in slowly.

All chapters seemed well-paced (and not too long nor too short) and I didn't get bored anywhere along the way.

As a writer Sarton seems to have a nice gentle natural writing style.

I liked this (my first Sarton book) so much that I intend to read much more of her work.

I recommend this journal to you.

When you need to take a deep breath and destress, pick up this book. Sarton has a rich understanding of the rhythm of nature and lives often in harmony with it...and she will inspire you to do the same.

subtle lessons.......2005-04-22

I don't know who reads May Sarton nowadays (hopefully at least students are still imbibing) for hers is a chosen art beholden to stillness and its plenitude, and we know the short shrift given to reflection in an oversized disposable culture. I do know that everything she's written holds magical lessons for every writer - her poems and journals are steeped in subtle lessons of patience, fearlessness and conscience. Plant Dreaming Deep (a title intended both as admonition and hopeful reflection) is a masterpiece. Part memoir, journal, survival guide, it's a kind of holy book for seekers searching the scrub of rocks and weeds. Sarton's intrepid gift has always been to secure for us the infinite contained in the small and unnoticed, to plant within the careful reader a kind of loving understanding to bloom unexpectedly farther on down the road, easing the load even as it deepens the search. Above all else, hers is an enlightening art that cannot lead astray. Quietly artful black and white photographs (of house and garden and friends - most by Lotte Jacobi and Eleanor Blair) are among the treasure found in the 1983 Norton paperback edition I own. Sarton's voice never fails; it's always rich and reasonable and true. It's easy to surmise that she's a overlooked writer, but if you really want what you're looking for, read May Sarton. Once born inside you, she's faithful to the end.
