            Book Description

Stereochemistry deals with the three-dimensional arrangement of atoms in molecules. All chemical reactions take place three dimensions and the spatial arrangement of those atoms can have a profound effect on the outcome of a chemical reaction. A good understanding of stereochemistry is, therefore, fundamental to any detailed appreciation and study of organic chemistry.Based on the highly successful at a Glance series from Blackwell Publishing, this book provides a concise introduction and overview of stereochemistry for students studying chemistry and related courses at undergraduate level. It then reinforces that overview by presenting 49 fully worked out stereochemistry problems, presented in the familiar at a Glance double page layout. A further 98 supplementary problems, with abbreviated answers, are designed to help the undergraduate student rapidly develop the knack of thinking in three dimensions, and generate the confidence to apply their knowledge of stereochemistry in the classroom, the exam room or the laboratory.Graphical presentation of information is central to the book. As befits such a visual subject, this facilitates the rapid assimilation and understanding of the basic concepts, principles and definitions of stereochemistry. Students using Stereochemistry at a Glance will find they have a resource with which they can quickly, economically and confidently acquire, regularly review and revise the basic facts that underpin stereochemistry.

              Book Description

Among the many beautiful and nontrivial theorems in geometry found in Geometry Revisited are the theorems of Ceva, Menelaus, Pappus, Desargues, Pascal, and Brianchon. A nice proof is given of Morley’s remarkable theorem on angle trisectors. The transformational point of view is emphasized: reflections, rotations, translations, similarities, inversions, and affine and projective transformations. Many fascinating properties of circles, triangles, quadrilaterals, and conics are developed.

              5 out of 5 stars Incredibly helpful.......2004-05-28

I just worked through this book & I have to say that it's probably the best for "what's next" after high school geometry. It's got a chapter on each of the following things: triangles (with Ceva's & Steiner-Lehmus' theorems, orthic triangles & Euler lines, etc), circles (like power of a point, etc), collinearity & concurrence, transformations (Yaglom's series of 3 books are better for these though but this is a good introduction), and an intro to inversive geometry and projective geometry. One section that blew my mind is the one about the "3-jugs" problem where you've got a jug that holds 8L, one that holds 5L & one the holds 3L and the goal is to get 4L in each of two jugs. Maybe you've heard of it...? This book gives a general method for solving problems like that using reflections. I liked how each section is very short and typically has just 2-3 theorems, so the book is split into manageable pieces. Maybe it's just a psychological thing, but I like that. Depending on the section, there are 3-10 problems at the end of each section; like any book there are easy ones with fairly obvious solutions and there are hard ounes that take a lot of thought. I think the hard ones might have come from olympiads because Sam Greitzer was a USAMO coach at some point. It doesn't matter though, this book gives you a lot of tools you can use to deal with olympiad-level problems. A couple good ones to work on after this book would be Johnson's "Advanced Euclidean Geometry" and Court's "College Geometry", both out of print unfortunately but maybe a nearby library wold have them?

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST SOURCE FOR GEOMETRY.......2002-08-11

I am a high school student who competes in extracurricular mathematics contests. I've found many great books for trigonometry, algebra, precalculus, calculus, and any other field of math except geometry, i.e. until I found this book. A thorough knowledge of geometry beyond what you learn in high school in necessary needed to be competitive, and the place to get it is Geometry Revisited. This book covers any geometry you could need and is by far the best, if not the only, book out there with what you need to know. This book was also very interesting and thought provoking. The selection and arrangement of topics couldn't be any better. Each lesson even contains exercises (with answers and hints) to show you how to apply what the book teaches you. I would recommend this book to any high school student competing in any contests, to any person interested in extending their knowledge of geometry, or to anyone who with any interest in math. I can tell you that you will learn multitudes and enjoy the book too.

5 out of 5 stars FOR ALL THOSE INTERESTED IN MATHEMATICS.......2001-07-26

This is 'the book' the typical high school student in America needs to read in order to see what Geometry is really all about. Geometry can be fun and engaging. Unfortunately it has taken a back seat in the high school curriculum. This is unfortunate considering the beauty that the subject has to offer. Many topics are covered in this book: The extended law of cosines, Ptolemy's theorem, transformational geometry, conics, and many, many, many more. This is also a book that is essential for mathematical problem solvers-- particularly for those interested in competing. All that is needed to follow along is the basic geometry learned at the high school level. This book is a must have for any mathematical library.

              A++ Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Undergrad Level Geometry Book Ever.......2000-07-08

Geometry Revisited should be used as a textbook for every geometry class in high school. It offers comprehensive proofs and theorems that every undergrad should know by the time he/she gets through basic geometry. The last sections of this book also offers a slight touch on comcepts such as non-Eucledian and projective geometry, serving as a launchpad to higher levels of education. I highly recommend this book to any high school or undergrad teachers and students.

Penzler Pick, April 2002: Already a sensation in his native England, this first novel by expatriate James Lasdun is one of the most disturbing and compelling books you are likely to read this year.

The protagonist, Lawrence Miller, is himself an expat teaching gender studies at a small college located just outside New York City. He is a member of the sexual harassment committee which meets on a regular basis to walk that fine line between the sublime and the ridiculous of political correctness.

Miller's well-ordered life starts to disintegrate one day when he takes a book from the shelf in his office to find that the bookmark has been moved several pages although, as far as he knows, nobody has visited his office. An easily explained lapse of memory perhaps, but Miller decides he will discuss it with the therapist he has been seeing in Manhattan since his wife left him. He is shocked as he approaches her office to see the therapist walking towards him, but she turns off towards Central Park before he can speak to her and he then loses sight of her. When he arrives at her office, however, she is waiting for him as usual and assures him that she has not left her office; in fact, she is always with another patient before Miller's appointment.

So begins the disorientation of Lawrence Miller. He has his little obsessions, of course--he won't pick up the messages on his answering machine, for instance, in order to convince himself that while he was out his wife tried to call him. Still in love with her, he hopes that she will call and want to return to him. But this is just a game he plays, part of his very human nature. He is in no way the sort of man who is paranoid or imagines conspiracies, but the unexplained incidents seem to be increasing.

Miller tries to rationalize what is happening, but he can't help thinking, nor can we, that he has become the target of somebody who wishes him harm. And when a series of murders takes place, Miller begins to suspect that he is being set up to take the blame for these murders by a devious and diabolical mind.

Lawrence Miller struggles to loosen the hold his pursuers have on him, but the more he struggles the more he appears to be drowning. Try to sleep after reading his terrifying story. --Otto Penzler

                  Book Description

The Horned Man opens with a man losing his place in a book, then deepens into a dark and terrifying tale of a man losing his place in the world. As Lawrence Miller—an English expatriate and professor of gender studies—tells the story of what appears to be an elaborate conspiracy to frame him for a series of brutal killings, we descend into a world of subtly deceptive appearances where persecutor and victim continually shift roles, where paranoia assumes an air of calm rationality, and where enlightenment itself casts a darkness in which the most nightmarish acts occur. As the novel races to its shocking conclusion, we follow Miller as he traverses the streets of Manhattan and the decaying suburbs beyond, in terrified pursuit of his pursuers. Written with sinuous grace and intellectual acuity, The Horned Man is an extraordinary, unforgettable first novel by an acclaimed writer and poet of unusual power. Reading group guide included.

                  5 out of 5 stars Great Book!!!.......2007-09-28

First I must say that I was concerned for seeing the low rating of this book on Amazon but when i finished the book I am glad to read a different one...For the readers who will wonder about this book's genre I can give a clue Lasdun writes like Murakami and Auster but of course he has his own talents..After reading this book,my first thing to do tomorrow is to buy SEVEN LIES...Don't think about the rating, this book is a must read..

4 out of 5 stars a murky thriller: the less you know up front, the better.......2007-08-30

Lawrence Miller is an uptight British gender studies professor at an American university. Strange things start happening to him: a bookmark isn't exactly where he thought it was. A coin in his office seems to have been moved. Then much stranger things start happening.

The vision is murky throughout this slim, grabbing tome. In many thrillers, you don't know exactly who is responsible. In this one, you don't even really understand what's happening (at least a chunk of the time). Even at the end, Lasdun refuses to make the resolution completely clear (and even dips into the surreal): After finishing the book, I could see the general resolution but lay awake, tying up loose ends in my mind. [One of the quotes on the back of the book gave me an inkling as to how the book might end; I enjoyed the book a great deal, but I'd have enjoyed the book even more if I hadn't read that.]

The Financial Times called this a "terse and beautifully controlled Gothic thriller" [1]. Well put. It was also a New York Times Notable Book of the Year and an Economist Best Book of the Year for 2002.

Poor plot if there is any real effort in it,poor content, nothing new!

4 out of 5 stars Very good, but not great.......2007-01-30

After devouring Lasdun's brilliant second novel reading the "The Horned Man" was no longer a matter of choice. While I greatly enjoyed much of the book and the concepts that it was based upon, and recognized it as an "evolutionary" stage that provided the foundation for the author's classic "Seven Lies", I sympathize with fellow readers who where left less than fully satisfied.

"The Horned Man" is a beautifully written novel that walks the line between a mystery novel and a philosophical/psychological study. Throughout the book Lasdun is effective in incrementally building up the tension, yet by "pushing" the protagonist more and more into the role of an (unreliable) detective, the conclusion is at odds with what most expect from the mystery genre. On the one hand this is regrettable, in that it has clearly left a part of the readership disappointed. On the other, one can argue that the mystery aspect is just there to provide the propulsion to the narrative, while the philosophical/psychological elements provide this novel's true backbone.

As a reader who followed the narrative in its continuous climb on the Lasdun rollercoaster, I shared the common disappointment in the experience of the short final descent. Just a look at what made "Seven Lies" so successful clearly reveals this book's narrative shortcomings as a mystery novel. Nowhere in "The Horned Man" are there moments of "grounding", in contrast to "Seven Lies", where an approach of progressive crises and temporary solutions is so effective. There are numerous examples where quests like the one in "The Horned Man" have been way more successful, some have referred to Fowles' "The Magus", but the Dutch writer Willem Frederik Herman's WWII thriller "Damocles' Dark Room", once translated as "Two Drops of Water", may be even more appropriate. Here, Lasdun did not do enough to meet the expectations of the mystery reader.

Yet, from the perspective of a Kafka inspired philosophical and psychological study this book deserves a lot of praise. Compare it for example to Murakami's beautiful "Kafka on the Shore". In that novel the Japanese master revisited the Oedipous myth in its own brand of quest. Although that novel struck me as more successful, I do have to say that Murakami did choose "the easy way out" by moving into the realm of the fantastic. Lasdun deserves significant praise for choosing the difficult "reality" path and keeping the fantastic out. Considering this book as a philosophical work, one gets a clear impression that the author wanted to put the reader in Miller's shoes and leave her/him similarly clueless at the end. With this "perception is reality" approach Lasdun makes a valiant philosophical attempt, and ends with the question: what, if anything, in the protagonist's narrative, has (any) grounding in reality?

My paperback copy of the novel contained a list of "Reading Group" questions. Prominently among them were on or two that addressed the "Doppelganger" motif. Unfortunately, and probably unintentionally, such questions seem to push a mystery agenda. As a result, those reading this book from a mystery perspective may end up feeling lost in a mirrored labyrinth with a "No Exit" sign.

                  3 out of 5 stars somewhat disappointed.......2005-10-18

a book that gets me to its finish gets an automatic two stars; if it's well written, that's a third star. but it's got to be pretty compelling to get more from me, and "the horned man," to my mind, just didn't deliver on its great, early promise. the first half of the book was pretty chilling and hypnotic; i felt i was submerged in a riveting novel, transported by the ominous narrative voice. But the second half of the book loses steam; the author's cleverness, intellect, and virtuostic language get in the way, derailing the story. the paranoia grows cloying and less interesting, the plot grows cumbersome. i finished the book without much trouble, but also missing the thrill I felt in the novel's opening sections.

                                  Book Description

Set-Off Law and Practice - An International Handbook , a joint project with the IBA, provides an invaluable guide to the application and practice of the rules of set-off in over 30 jurisdictions, spanning Europe, Asia and the US. The use of set-off as a mechanism for risk reduction in cross-border financial contracts has increased in recent years as market participants seek to reduce both operational risk (Herstatt Risk) and credit risk. For this reason, the enforceability of set-off both outside and within insolvency has become particularly relevant for market participants and their legal advisors. Written by leading practitioners from around the world, each chapter explains the principles of the rules of set-off in each of the jurisdictions concerned, followed by a case study illustrating the application of the law of set-off to a real-world problem. Including comparative tables showing how the different aspects of set-off are applied in each country, this work provides an at-a-glance port of call for banking and finance solicitors who wish to establish the pitfalls of set-off in any one of 31 jurisdictions.
