Book Description

"A superb chronicle of a unique period in the development of printmaking in the U.S. in the post World War II years. This excellent history of a gifted group of artist-professors who through their creative and innovative approach to the teaching of printmaking helped to initiate a renaissance in printmaking that has become a singular addition to twentieth century American artistic expression."-Clare Romano, Pratt Institute, and John Ross, Manhantanville College

From naming the first-ever artist-in-residence, John Steuart Curry, to fostering the internationally renowned Tandem Press today, the University of Wisconsin- Madison art faculty has been an innovator. The breakthrough aesthetics and technical innovations of its printmaking program have led the way, and the "Madison Mafia" has spread the word to the art world for half a century.

Something significant happened in the printmaking field on campuses across the country following World War II, as the interest in this art form exploded and the emphasis shifted from teacher education to teaching studio arts. But the confluence of individuals and events at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is unique, establishing and maintaining the UW as a major printmaking center and a formative influence on fine art prints in America for more than fifty years.

This book tells this story beautifully in words and pictures. The words: interviews with and about those who taught and were taught, from founding father Alfred Sessler to former student Bruce Nauman. The pictures-the prints-speak for themselves.

Angling legend Charles Meck covers tandems top to bottom with his favorite flies for matching hatches, as well as tried-and-true patterns for drumming up fish during summer doldrums and other tough conditions. In the first book devoted entirely to fishing more than one fly at once, Meck discusses 7 of the most effective rigs and the best times to use them, including detailed steps showing how to tie his new looped-leader series of flies. Artist Dave Hall provides clear illustrations of the different connections and fishing techniques. Whether casting to the banks from a drift boat on Montana s Missouri River or stalking central Pennsylvania spring-creek trout, anglers across the country will learn something from this book to help them catch more trout.

          Description:
The metabolism of selenium (Se) in the human body has yet not completely been unravelled and hence, an efficient method for characterization and on-line monitoring of the main Se-compound in human urine after consumption of Se-rich food was developed. Total Se-concentration in human urine after consumption of several Se-rich products was measured with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The highest Se concentration in urine was observed after 4-10h. The urine samples were brought onto a reversed phase column and the Se was detected by ICP-MS. Parameters for liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS-MS) measurements were optimized by using commercially available sugars, because it is known that some of the urinary metabolites contain a sugar moiety. In order to characterize the predominant Se-metabolite, it was necessary to extensively clean-up the sample and preconcentrate the species. The main metabolite was measured on its precursor ion on three different m/z according to three isotopes of Se. Relative peak surfaces matched the relative abundances of the isotopes. The product ions could be measured in a human urine sample in accordance to the product ions of the commercially available sugars. Moreover, the evidence of a selenosugar was demonstrated by the use of the Se-isotopes when measuring the product ions. LC-ESI-MS-MS was proven to be very efficient for the characterization of the main urinary Se-metabolite and can be used for on-line monitoring of the compound in urine samples. The method can be extended for clinical screening after consumption of Se-(en)rich(ed) food by use of the Se-isotopic profile and/or of the typical product ions of (methyl)-N-acetyl-hexosamines.

            Description:
We have studied the growth behavior of citric acid, tartaric acid, adipic acid and ammonium bisulfate particles in ethanol vapor with an organic tandem differential mobility analyzer technique (OTDMA). Time dependence of the change in the particle size due to interaction with ethanol vapor was determined. The results show that adipic acid particles have normal deliquescence-hysteresis type of growth behavior, whereas the growth of the other particle types is strongly time dependent due to chemical reactions with timescales on the order of seconds. Citric acid and tartaric acid obviously undergo auto-protonation catalyzed esterification due to their favorable molecular structure, whereas adipic acid has unfavorable structure for intramolecular catalysis. As a rather strong acid, ammonium bisulfate can transfer a proton to ethanol and hence a sulfate esterification reaction takes place. We suggest that time dependent growth behavior can be used for detection of acidic species in atmospheric aerosols.

                Book Description

The classical theory of computation has its origins in the work of Goedel, Turing, Church, and Kleene and has been an extraordinarily successful framework for theoretical computer science. The thesis of this book, however, is that it provides an inadequate foundation for modern scientific computation where most of the algorithms are real number algorithms. The goal of this book is to develop a formal theory of computation which integrates major themes of the classical theory and which is more directly applicable to problems in mathematics, numerical analysis, and scientific computing. Along the way, the authors consider such fundamental problems as: * Is the Mandelbrot set decidable? * For simple quadratic maps, is the Julia set a halting set? * What is the real complexity of Newton's method? * Is there an algorithm for deciding the knapsack problem in a ploynomial number of steps? * Is the Hilbert Nullstellensatz intractable? * Is the problem of locating a real zero of a degree four polynomial intractable? * Is linear programming tractable over the reals? The book is divided into three parts: The first part provides an extensive introduction and then proves the fundamental NP-completeness theorems of Cook-Karp and their extensions to more general number fields as the real and complex numbers. The later parts of the book develop a formal theory of computation which integrates major themes of the classical theory and which is more directly applicable to problems in mathematics, numerical analysis, and scientific computing.

5 out of 5 stars blew me away.......2003-02-18

A warning about the title. Some confusion may arise over whether the book is about "computational complexity theory" or the field of "complexity" being pioneered by places like the Santa Fe institute. Without neccessarily pidgeonholing the book into one of these fields, I will warn "complexity" types that it dives heavily into the rigorous field of computational complexity theory (i.e. P/NP, theoretical upper bounds on running times of algorithms ,etc), and re-assure readers from the computational complexity theory camp that the book is more rigorous then the cover, or the title might lead you to believe.

My first introduction to this book/subject area was when Lenore Blum (one of the authors) gave a talk at Carnegie Mellon University, mostly following the outlines of the book. I found the talk to be so interesting that I went out and bought the book. While I am not a professional CS theorist, I did attend many of the theory seminars at CMU while I was an undergrad there (you may call me a "hobby theorist"). The talk on this book was one of the few that seemed as novel and mind-blowing to me as my first introduction to theory had been (just in terms of "Wow this is cool!" "Ooh, I never thought of those things in that way", etc).

The book is about a novel approach to applying discoveries from complexity theory to the analysis of numerical algorithms. Pure complexity theory quickly becomes unwieldy, as input/output sizes for real-numbers approximated on a turing tape depends on many factors, including the precision of the representation, and the representation method itself. Techniques from applied algorithms (most notably, the "RAM machine" model of the 1970s) have the unfortunate side-effect of being able to solve problems in NP in polynomial time. Blum (and the other authors) take the novel approach of just allowing this side effect, while getting meaningful complexity bounds on real-valued computation, by creating a real-valued analog to the discrete turing machine used in classical complexity theory. Along the way, the authors show that, while this model does allow problems in NP to be solved in polynomial time, it introduces a class, which is not NP, but analogous to it, in the sense that theorems on real-valued algorithms have similar proofs to their discrete counterparts in classical complexity theory.

While this is not neccessarily useful to most practical programmers, it is, in addition to being a fascinating and novel way to look at numerical algorithms, also a fascinating subject to think about when looking at the physical world. Among the physical processes that can be looked at from the perspective of this book, are the much-hyped chaotic systems prevalant in the (unfortunately named -- and not very closely connected to "Computational Complexity Theory") field of "complexity" associated with the Santa Fe institute (hence the picture of the Mandelbrot set on the cover, which the authors study as a decidability problem within the framework of the new real-valued Turing machines introduced in this book)

My one complaint about the book was that, while the talk Lenore gave at CMU was aimed at an audience more familiar with computational complexity theory then with continuous mathematics, the book goes the other way around, making painstaking explanations of elementary computability / complexity theory, but assuming a strong knowledge of continuous mathematics.

This is an important book in complexity theory. It ties the discrete complexity theory of NP-completeness with numerical computation of continuous functions. Traditionally, numerical computation uses floating-point machines as the computational model and the theory is very messy. More recently, there are several approaches trying to create a more coherent theory with discrete complexity theory. This theory using Turing machines as a model is one of them. The advantage of this approach is that it makes a direct connection with the NP-completeness theory. The book is well-written and includes a brief review of discrete complexity theory.

                      Book Description

In The Good Soldier Svejk, celebrated Czech writer and anarchist Jaroslav Hasek combined dazzling wordplay and piercing satire in a hilariously subversive depiction of the futility of war.

Good-natured and garrulous, Svejk becomes the Austrian army's most loyal Czech soldier when he is called up on the outbreak of World War I—although his bumbling attempts to get to the front serve only to prevent him from reaching it. Playing cards and getting drunk, he uses all his cunning and genial subterfuge to deal with the police, clergy, and officers who chivy him toward battle. Cecil Parrott's vibrant translation conveys the brilliant irreverence of this classic about a hapless Everyman caught in a vast bureaucratic machine.
“Brilliant . . . Perhaps the funniest novel ever written.”
                      —George Monbiot

5 out of 5 stars the good soldier svejk.......2007-05-23

This is an hilarious novel that was a forerunner to catch 22. We have the Good Soldier Svejk for WWI, Catch 22 for WWII, and to a lesser extent Forrest Gump for Viatnam.

Recommend to those wanting a good chuckle

4 out of 5 stars Picaresque antiwar classic .......2006-11-04

This is a beautiful and inexpensive edition, with the original cartoonish illustrations. The translation is lively and the book can be hilarious, but I bogged down about halfway through--it seems to go on and on, as picaresque novels do, but a bit too much in the same vein for my taste. It was written for serialization, so it's probably not meant to be read at one gulp, and likely I'll pick it up at some point later.

5 out of 5 stars Probably My Favorite Book.......2001-01-12

I first read Hasek's masterpiece almost 30 years ago in a shorter and more Bowdlerized translation. The Cecil Parrot edition is, needless to say, far preferable (it even contains a wonderful introduction including a discussion of Czech profanity as compared to that in English) and I've read it again and again since it came out in 1974. Shelby Foote said somewhere that every year he reads Proust as a sort of literary vacation. About ever 2 or 3 years I reread Svejk to cleanse my literary palate and it's always as fresh and as enjoyable as it was the first time. The dialogue, the characters and the situations in Svejk are, stated simply, the funniest I've ever read. Many other books have many merits in this regard, but none has approached Hasek in the sustained hilarity over 500 pages or more. The secret policeman, Bretschneider, Chaplain Katz, Sergeant Major Vanek, Cadet Biegler, Balloun and Lt. Dub are all memorable characters in their own right, but when they interact the result surpasses anything I have ever read for comedy. The episode involving a character with writer's block during his drafting of a prayer to be recited while administering Mr. Kokoska's pharmaceutical powders for cow flatulence is a classic rivalling Aristophanes or Rabelais. [I realize that sentence is confusingly prolix, so please read the book; it will be worth your while.] The term "laugh out loud" is overused and abused these days, but The Good Soldier Svejk will have you disturbing family and friends with repeated guffawing any time you are reading it nearby. I can't give a text any higher recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Two Best Novels of World War I.......1999-11-28

Both of the best books on the First World War were written by the losing side...ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT and THE GOOD SOLDIER SCHWEIK tell the same story, but from different viewpoints. Schweik is a wise fool whose main goal is to avoid the greater foolishness around him. Hasek was a modern day Cervantes and this modern day Don Quixote interacts with a gallery of hilarious characters and their stories. I only regret that Hasek died before the book could be finished. Josef Lada's illustrations are a wonderful addition to the book, and it's a pleasure getting Cecil Parrott's translation in hardcover. Note: The earlier translations are not the complete book.

3 out of 5 stars Spun Our Serial Runs On and On.......1999-08-31

OK, I'll admit up front that I only made it through 450 of this 800 page monster. As I was reading this, I saw the pile of unread books mounting alarmingly, and as I had more or less gotten the gist of it, I tucked the ribbon twixt the pages and set it aside. These (never-ending) stories of the Czech WW I soldier Svejk are considered a modern "must read." as they depict the trials and travails of a well-intentioned soldier muddling through the army beauracacy. The book functions as a satire of the war, the leaders, and the army. The problem is, these stories were written as serials, and as such, tend to go on and on and on.... so that Hasek could milk more money from them. In fact, they are unfinished, as the author died before he could dictate the end! So, I suggest dipping in to it, but not soaking too long as the antics don't vary much as the book moves along. Those with an particular interest in Czech culture or World War I might have greater reason to finish it than the general reader.

                      5 out of 5 stars A Classic and a very funny book.......2006-07-06

This is one of the classics and in fact was quoted in the The Times of London as one of the 100 books of the last century. It is funny and it is wise and shows with absolute clarity the absurdity of war, dictatorship or regimentation of any kind.
It is very well translated into English by a former British ambassador to Czechoslovakia.

This book is a must for any person who wants to understand or identify with Central and Eastern Europe. Schweik, is brilliant, ironic in his straightforwardness, and without pretense. He is stumbling on adventures in his attempt to get by through life, and is always prepared to find a safer, easier way of handling the situation. The fact that some "higher" officials consider him a fool and an idiot does not bother him in the least. In another culture he might seek revenge, but instead he just smiles, agrees and continues on. In the immense stupidity of political powers, war, and military service, Schweik, who is released from service for being an idiot, is the only one who sees and thinks clearly. The brilliance of the book is in its portrayal of the realistic events that happen to an ordinary soldier. This is not a book of mysticism or deep philosophical reflections, but in its simple and humorous depictions achieved an illuminating effect on my outlook of life. It is and will remain one of my favorite books of all time.

                      5 out of 5 stars Totally unique!.......2005-07-13

This book is a funny anti-war adventure story, but also so much more. It gives the reader an excellent sense of what it might have been like to live in the Austrian Empire in 1914-15. I know it sounds strange, but after reading this, Kafka begins to make sense. Read this book once for sheer entertainment, but then read it again and give it some thought. It's worth it!

3 out of 5 stars In The Middle .......2005-05-11

The Good Solider Svejk is a comical tale of a faithful, "idiot" of a solider heading his way to proudly serve his country. The book chronicles his journey with his Regiment and is full of comical mishaps and such. Though, the book is pretty well written and on a very easy level, I found it to be a bit redundant. From reading the intro, this book started as a series of short stories and I think they would be better if read this way. Constantly hearing about how Svjek has once again, messed up something for the Lieutenant started to get annoying and predictable. This book was meant to be in six parts, however the author was only able to write four before passing away. Though that may be, you do not feel as if the ending left you hanging which can be good or bad depending on who you are. The fact that I was not left hanging made me feel that perhaps I could have left to book at page 400 and still felt the same about it. I normally enjoy long books, this however was very difficult for me to get through and I would not recommend it to those with short attention spans.

All in all, I found the writing to be easy and comical as there were several instances in which I wanted to laugh out loud. I do think, this book would have faired better if I had read it in the short story sections it had meant to be in. I am completely in the middle in regards to this book because I feel there are some people who would enjoy it much more than me and others who will put it down after the first 200 pages. If you would like to read The Good Solider Svejk, keep an open mind and have a few months set aside to complete it.

                      5 out of 5 stars Yesterday's farce a good match with today's reality.......2005-02-19

Anyone who has ever endured government service will enjoy relating the scenes of "The Good Soldier" to his personal experiences. My favorite is the following scene of the hero being called from his cell for interrogation, not a normal subject of amusement these days. The attitude of our prisoners, seized in the war on terror, does not differ greatly from Svejk's --

They came to take him away for questioning. And so, mounting the staircase to the 3rd Department for questioning, Svejk carried his cross up on to the hill of Golgotha, sublimely unconscious of his martyrdom. As he came into the office, he said,"Good evening to you all, gentlemen." Instead of a reply, ... someone stood him in front of a table, behind which sat a gentleman with a cold official face and features of bestial cruelty, features of the criminal type. The interrogator gave Svejk a bloodthirsty look and said: "Take that idiotic expression off your face." "I can't help it," replied Svejk. "I was discharged from the army for idiocy ... I'm an official idiot."

Back in his cell, Svejk told all the detainees that this kind of interrogation was fun. "They shout at you a bit and finally they kick you out. In the old days, it used to be worse. If a chap was only thrown into a dungeon he felt as if he were reborn. Nowadays it's fun being locked up. It's true it's a bit far to the interrogation room. You've got to go along three corridors and up one staircase, but on the other hand it's a clean and lively corridor. No one need be afraid that in the office they'll tell him, "Well, we've considered your case and tomorrow you'll be quartered or burnt, your choice. Yes, nowadays things have improved for our good."

For those who see war in a religious vein --

"Preparations for the slaughter of mankind have always been made in the name of God or some supposed higher being which men have devised and created in their own imagination.

Before the Holy Inquisition burnt its victims, it performed the most solemn religious service -- a High Mass with singing.

When criminals are executed, priests always officiate, molesting the delinquents with their presence. The great shambles of the world war did not take place without the blessing of priests. Chaplains of all armies prayed and celebrated drumhead masses for victory for the side whose bread they ate.

Throughout all Europe people went to slaughter like cattle, driven there not only by butcher emperors, kings or other potentates and generals, but also by priests of all confession, who blessed them and made them perjure themselves that they would destroy the enemy on land, in the air, and on the sea etc."
