Book Description
The two companion volumes of Advances in Polymer Science - Volumes 150 and 151 - deal with recent progress in the characterization of polymers, mostly in solution but also at surfaces. The contributions comprise multidimensional chromatography for elucidation, the composition and the chain length distribution of copolymers, capillary electrophoresis of synthetic water-soluble polymers including polyelectrolytes, field flow fractionation techniques for quick and reliable separation and characterization of broad polymer samples and a novel application of thermal grating experiments for probing Brownian and thermal diffusion. Finally the rapid development of atomic forces techniques is reviewed with particular emphasis on the visualization of macromolecules and the patterning of surfaces.

Second Edition is even better than the first.......2007-08-21
I liked the first version so much that I bought this second edition also. The first edition was based on Mathematica 3 but this second edition is based on Mathematica 5 (Mathematica 6 has only just shipped within the past 2 months).
As did the first edition, this second edition comes with a cd that contains the entire book in Mathematica notebook form. The style sheets used to format the second edition cd notebooks are much cleaner looking than the first.
At anyrate, I definitely recommend the second edition even if you already have the first edition.
Constantly Referring To.......2007-07-18
I agree with many of the other reviewers - this book is great. I recently got Mathematica and found the imbedded Help browser a little cryptic at times. I purchased Mathematica Navigator after reading many of the reviews here. I haven't read the book from cover to cover, but instead use it as a reference after having read chapters 1 through 3.
I'm studying Matrix algebra, so I skipped to Chapter 18 and worked through the examples without any problem, save a small error on page 467 where an upper case P was typed in lower case.
Highly recommend for anyone wanting help making the most out of very powerful software.
Best Choice for starting.......2007-05-29
Very well written and full of useful information to start learning Mathematica. It covers all the foundamentals.
Excellent book to buy with An Introduction to Programming with Mathematica.......2007-04-25
This is a GREAT reference book. You won't learn how to program Mathematica from it. You will learn an amazing amount about how Mathematica works by reading it. If you don't believe me, check out it's thorough explanation of cubic splines. It's better than the Mathematica Help. It also comes with the complete book which can be installed in the Mathematica help system.
There is, literally, a wealth of information to work with in this book.
I would also strongly recommend getting An Introduction to Programming with Mathematica, Third Edition. This is a first rate "course in a book" for programming.
There are other books which are good. Between these two books, you will have an amazing arsenal to work with!

Got Mathematica? Buy This Book NOW!.......2004-07-15
The positive reviews were right on the money, this book is the best! It allowed me to start using Mathematica with ease, compared to the many hours of past frustration while working on optimizations. I fought endlessly, struggling to decipher the software's baroque navigation, cryptic errors, hostility to the user which borders on abuse - but now Mathematica and I are becoming great friends thanks to Heikki Ruskeepaa's wonderful tome. THANK YOU FOR WRITING THIS BOOK!!!
Of particular benefit is the guidance s/he provides for best practices in formatting cells to avoid common, productivity-killing pitfalls.

Her life changes when she visits the hospital room of Henry Friedman, an older man who has attempted suicide. Deborah's encounter with Henry and his family draws her into a world of tragedy, frailty, love, and, finally, hope.

Joy comes in the morning.......2007-05-12
Excellent book. Very well written. A beautiful love story with a few twists and turns. Really enjoyed reading it.
Clergy as "Humans".......2007-03-30
All too often, many of us have expectations from our clergy that are unrealistice. Although the are trained as spiritual leaders, they are, after all is said and done,-just human like the rest of us.
This novel explores how it feels to be a female, Reform Rabbi. If you would like to know what it is like to be in a position like that, this is a good book to read.
Many "issues" are dealt with-Mental illness, aging, dying, love, families, and spiritual crises. It was difficult to "put it down."
Have a little faith in your reader, or yourself.......2006-09-09
Ugh. Nothing I hate more then an author who writes a lovely story and then spoils it at the end with some melodramatic twist that is not relevant to the plot and indicates a lack of faith in one's readers. It may represent the author's world view, but a book should be looked at as an entity with a personality of its own and diversions like the one in this book are silly. Perhaps its not just a recognition of the lack of faith in one's readers, its a lack of faith in the author's ability to hold our attention to the end. Silly.
Otherwise, a great book with very loveable and endearing characters.
A Mixed Bag.......2006-04-07
I enjoyed the author's previous book very much. I 'd like to give this book a 3.5... I really enjoyed the first half of the book - the development of the characters, the writing, the storyline, etc. As someone involved in the Jewish community, I especially enjoyed the Jewish educational piece through the descriptions. as I got started I it really felt like a delightful read for my recent vacation. However, about 1/2 way through (why does this happen with so many books - both fiction and non-fiction!) As the book reached it storyline climax, I cared less about the characters than I did at the beginning. I no longer could believe what was going on.
All in all, I would share this book with friends, but would let them know to expect a book that has some really lovely Jewish parts, but has a mixed story line.
searching to fit in.......2006-02-27
At first I did not think i would like this book.
Because it was very one dimensionally. It felt like I was at first reading a beach read. Some of the events in the book were very quirky, 20-30 somethings. But than I started to relate to what she was going through. She a jew who wanted to become more observant and did not know where she fit in.
Myself, I am in my 40's. I have had a problem since I am just learning about my roots. Even though I was brought up jewish there are things I am torn between the secular world and the jewish.
Even though this is fiction. The book put it in prospective. Especially when you don't know where you fit in. Not so much for the literal form, but that the author knew where I was coming from.
If you like reading a quirky beach romance this is for you. BEWARE
Just like the previous reviewers have said, if you love the book like I had you will be passing it on

Book Description
In Brooklyn, New York, in 1927, Carl Brown and Annie McGairy meet and fall in love. Though only eighteen, Annie travels alone to the Midwestern university where Carl is studying law to marry him. Little did they know how difficult their first year of marriage would be, in a faraway place with little money and few friends. But Carl and Annie come to realize that the struggles and uncertainty of poverty and hardship can be overcome by the strength of a loving, loyal relationship. An unsentimental yet uplifting story, Joy in the Morning is a timeless and radiant novel of marriage and young love.
Customer Reviews:
Quick, easy read.......2007-08-25
I picked this book by chance on Amazon; and am glad I did! It was a quick read...I couldn't put it down! I think this book is especially good for young mothers. It is interesting, and sometimes humbling, to read about how tough times used to be compared to the luxuries we have today.
wished there was more.......2007-06-20
couldn't put it down, was dissappointed when I got to the last page because I wanted there to be more
Joy in the Morning--Fabulous!!.......2006-11-21
I read "Joy in the Morning" after reading "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" and while I was a little disappointed it wasn't as long as the first one, it was by far my favorite Betty Smith novel. Being newly married, I could identify with some of the struggles that Annie and Carl faced.
I know that most of Betty Smith's books are autobiographical, but there was something about Annie in this book that was especially touching. Maybe it was her struggle to fit in, or to grow into the adult woman she was pushed into being with her marriage to Carl. Either way, this is by far my favorite book (not just by Betty Smith) and I would highly reccomend it. It's a book that I would have no problems reading over and over again.
a nice read.......2006-10-02
This book is an account of the first year of marriage for Carl and Annie and the trials they (like so many others) endure, including an unexpected pregnancy, financial troubles, and adjusting to living with one another. Smoothly written with detailed characterization. I was, however, disappointed that this book lacks the beautiful prosaic quality, imagery, and nostalgic feeling that is so wonderful in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Much of the book is dialogue, which does not 'flow' as well as the author's narrative writing style. Worth the read, but not Betty's most enchanting book.
Gets Better Everytime I Read It.......2006-08-06
Betty Smith will always be remembered for A Tree Grows In Brooklyn but Joy in thew Morning and all her other books all have a certain mystic that also makes them special. I first read Joy in the Morning over fifty years ago but the characters still are as alive and real and current as they were at the first reading. The name is so apporiate as it definitely gives you joy.

Book Description
Joy in the Morning finds Bertie Wooster trapped in the countryside with his bossy ex-fiancé and her fire-breathing father, frightful brother, and beefy new betrothed. Uproar ensues until Jeeves arrives to save the day.
Customer Reviews:
Classic Jeeves and Wooster.......2006-09-03
Picture a story involving a snarl of relatives and lovers tangled in a web of misunderstandings. If tragedy ensues, you have your standard soap opera. If, on the other end, the results are more comic, you have a P.G. Wodehouse novel. I can't really judge soaps, but it's probably safe to say that they range from good to bad. With Wodehouse, however, the quality is almost always dead-on-great, and never more so than with his Jeeves and Wooster stories, as Joy in the Morning once again demonstrates.
As the novel opens, Bertie Wooster has just emerged from being in the soup once again. What this soup was and how he escaped it is the story that follows. In this case, Bertie is coerced into going to one of his least favorite places, Steeple Bumpleigh, home to his dread Aunt Agatha. (Is there a more terrifying figure in comic fiction than Agatha?) Her husband, Bertie's Uncle Percival, needs Bertie to participate in a ruse that will help cinch a business deal. It is not a job that Bertie relishes, and the only the assurance of Aunt Agatha's absence allows him to screw up the courage to make the trip.
Of course, there are complications. For one thing, Percival's ward Nobby has fallen for Boko Fittleworth, and while the love is mutual, Percival - whose consent is needed for their marriage - has nothing but loathing for Boko. A scheme is needed to win over Percival, and Bertie will be recruited to play a part. Also at Steeple Bumpleigh is Florence Craye, an ex-fiancee of Bertie's who is now engaged to the easily jealous policeman, Stilton Cartwright. An argument and a misunderstanding will find her re-betrothed to Bertie and him a target of Stilton's wrath.
Bertie is a well-meaning but not-so-bright fellow who tends to get into trouble through accident and the manipulation of others. Left alone, life would be easy, but there are too many who force Bertie's involvement. Fortunately, there is his valet, Jeeves, who is able to solve nearly any problem.
The joy of reading a Jeeves and Wooster novel is Bertie's delightful narration with its unique enhancements to the English language. This is a book that is pure fun with no great insights or deep characters. It may be fluff, but it is five-star fluff and a great diversion.
Wodehouse at his best.......2006-07-10
This is a great, funny book. It may be my favorite Jeeves & Wooster story.
Not his best work.......2005-07-19
It's a given that Wodehouse's plots are completely outlandish or, in the words of another reviewer, like musical comedies. And yet somehow I have found a certain plausibility or coherence within the outlandishness of other of his books, such that I was more than willing to suspend my disbelief. In this case, I felt that the plot devices were weaker than usual, however, and in fact it took me a while to get through this one as a result.
The basic plot elements have been summarized elsewhere, but I will give one example of what I mean, to wit: Bertie's uncle by marriage, Uncle Percy, stands opposed to the marriage of his ward, Nobby, to one Boko Fittleworth. The plan to get Uncle to change his mind involves Bertie verbally assaulting him, to the point where the uncle must be "rescued" by Boko, who just happens to be in the vicinity (outside the uncle's study, for example). Uncle P. will then realize what an upstanding chap our Boko is.
Even within Bertie's cocooned world, this is weak, nor is it the lone instance of evidence that Wodehouse was not at his peak with this one. Still, he does charm readers as usual with Bertie's commentaries, a brilliant mix of goofy slang and highbrow poetic references, often in the same sentence. For better stories, I would recommend "Leave It To PSmith" (5 stars) or "Pigs Have Wings" (4 stars).
Beyond brilliant .......2004-10-30
P.G. Wodehouse could write a phonebook and make it brilliant. But this story is so incredibly good that words fail me. He weaves farce upon satire upon mystery upon suspense upon hilarious premise and delightful payoff until the reader is dizzy with laughter and awe. The usual suspects are here: Bertie Wooster and his butler, Jeeves, plus frightening debutants, pompous authority figures, shrill relatives, troublesome children, and yet another pleasant English country village...pleasant, that is, until Bertie & Co. come along. Wodehouse was the absolute master of the English language, of humor, and plot construction. This book is as good an example of his mastery as there is. My only regret is that the reading experience passes by too quickly.
The Master at his Best.......2003-04-26
I would not willingly try to judge which is Wodehouse's best book, for it is a hard task, as each of the Master's works shine in thier own special way. But if i had to, and there was no other way, then it would have to be Joy in the Morning.
This is a classic story of Bertie Wooster and Jeeves, his valet, or as Jeeves puts it "his gentleman's gentleman". There are several books featuring Bertie and Jeeves and like all the others this one is a cracker.
Bertie has to go to Steeple Bumpleigh, the lair of his horrendouns Aunt Agatha, to assist his uncle pull of a tricky business deal. Confusion ensues when he gets engaged to the wrong girl - the overbearing, always-moulding Florence Craye. The situation is especially hard for him, as also in the cast of characted is Stilton Cheesewright, who thinks Bertie as a snake and butterfly, and wants to clobber him.
Add to this a business magnate from Long Island, an eccentric author, and a boy scout bent (pun intended, read the book and you shall find out) on helping all around him, and its a recipie for the worst kind of disaster for Bertie. Thank god he has Jeeves on hand to extricate him from all the doodah.
A superb read. Dont give this one a miss. Remember, a man who is tired of Wodehouse, is a man who is tired of Life.

An old fashioned loved story orchestrated by God........1998-04-16
Joy Applegate does not know that her life is about to drastically change. The daughter of a prosperous businessman, she is ill eqipped when tragedy strikes and she is suddenly responsible for her brother and their upkeep. Her "chance" meeting with Steve Donovan orchestrates their search for God and the meaning of life as they cope with insurmountable problems. Hill's writing style is fresh and engaging. Her boldness in addressing Christian issues is like refreshing rain. As a Christian, I enjoyed the story but I found the sudden conversion of all characters unrealistic although possible.
